Can you believe that isopods are lizards? They lay eggs and have feet. This makes them a bird. As we all know birds are reptiles which, makes arthropods lizards.

Haha I love that he immediately pointed out that isopods aren’t insects. I have a strong psychological reaction to a lot of insects but I keep isopods. My mom thinks I’m crazy but I’m like “they’re crustaceans!” It’s kind of a voluntary exposure therapy. I really enjoy having living terrariums to mimic a tiny ecosystem. Isopods turned out to be a great and accessible option for that. I now have porcellio laevis dairy cows and armadillidium vulgare T+ albino. Some of my dairy cows escaped this summer when it was insanely humid, which was disconcerting 😳 I shored up their terrarium a little better but I still feel kinda bad since they ultimately probably didn’t make it. Live and learn. I still love my podlings! And I won’t forget walking upstairs to go to bed and spotting an isopods casually climbing down the stairs out of the corner of my eye. I was like “Oi! Where do you think you’re going?? Out for a night on the town?!” And he’s like “don’t mind me, mom, don’t mind me….” I picked him up and plunked him back in the terrarium, cheeky boy

Some of them drowned when the enclosure flooded (sad times), but many of them thrived! This was when I was very young and thought that Isopods just immediately died off...because they always did. In the late 1980s, I kept the wild North American species for a couple years. In that time, I ended up having a little colour variation crop up (dark coral, or more pronounced light spots), as well as eventually a few albinos. When I moved, I just put them back in the yard where I had found them. Their favourite food was carrot tops.

I keep isopods as pets - the pandas, the powder orange, the silver stripes, dairy cows and rubber duckies, 5000 at least on total. I love them so much. I feed them leaves and sticks, and chestnuts, and my organic food scraps, and cat food and shed skins of the roaches (tarantula food colony). Such delightful little guys.

This has been one of the most fascinating videos of yours yet!
I had no idea there was such a big world of isopod enthusiasts. I wonder if marine isopods of any kind are kept much at all?
It's interesting hearing all the different common names for them! Where I grew up there were called woodlouse, where my mum grew up they're sowbugs, I've heard pillbugs, and roly-poly, and where I live now, they're called carpenters!

I must say,my fav kind will always be the native A.Nasatum of my region. They are absolutely gorg, dusty blue/purply, with splayed edges like a trilobite and a cutesy nose (hence the name).
