February 21, 2024. Michele S. Stumbled across " Nessum Dorma" version by Jonas Kaufmann. Have concentrated on listening to Pavarotti's and Frankiin's version and now Kaufmann's version enters the picture. Glorious and soulful! Moved beyond tears. 🎉
Hav always had a love for Luciano’s version and always felt it to be the definitive version over and above Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras. Then I came across Aretha Franklin’s version when Luciano was ill at the Grammys many years ago and was stunned. However, and this is just my opinion that Jonas’ version is absolutely breathtaking and unbeatable !
I do wish people would stop harping on about, and comparing him to, Pavarotti. He's Jonas Kaufmann with skills, musicality and a gorgeous voice all of his own. He doesn't just belt out Nessum Dorma like so many other tenors do, but brings out the emotions and desires contained within it with warmth and expression that is so moving and effective. He is such a supremely gifted tenor and, in my opinion, is far and away the better singer and performer of Nessum Dorma.

Wow, can you imagine cutting loose with a voice like that? The depth, tone and power is spectacular. The lose of Pavarotti and aging of Domingo had lessen my time spent listening to opera but I can honestly say, this is special as far as I am concerned. Bravo Jonas Kaufman...Outstanding, Outstanding, Outstanding.

lo que siempre me llama la atención de sus presentaciones, no es solo la voz, sino su sonrisa tan sincera al final, denota muchísima humildad, porque sabe que dio lo mejor de sí. Si es el mejor tenor o no, claro hay un mundo de tenores con mejor técnica y un registro vocal más controlado, pero este tenor tiene algo muy particular, no solo canta, deja fluir sentimientos en su voz, que hacen un fuerte efecto en el público. Esto es lo que lo hace especial.
It's true! His voice, his smile , his kindness fill my heart. Infourtunably for him, his had a perturbated facial expression , however it was a sublim performance! 🌟🌟
Dear Lord! I feel as though my heart has just been torn bodily from my chest but the terrible pain feels so incredibly GOOD! How could such a thing be possible? I could see from the look on his face at the very end that he TOO was tremendously moved by this marvellous thing, but he got it under cntrol and came through with a most beautiful smile indicating that he too was enjoying this great vocal triumph. I feel so glad that every now and then a greatly-gifted or extraordinarily loving SOMEONE is able to transcend the usual barriers that keep most of us pinned down in anxiety and mudane mediocrity. Artists of Jonas's exalted aliber are rare, but I thank God for them, because they are able to pierce the gloom and show us glimses of Heaven.

Once I heard him I could no longer spend much time listening to any other tenor. For me, he is a revelation. I find his voice exquisite - the darkness of the baritonal quality is something I adore.

Possibly the only real dramatic tenor of our time. The manliness and the power of his voice are overwhelming, respectful and adorable, but he can be very tender too, which is absolutely thrilling!
Kauffmann... Ah, Kauffmann... You're not only one of the remarkable tenor voices of all times, but also a master of elegance, musicality and technique. Watching you is a top experience of what "A"rt is. Hope you have a very long career, in order future generations could still have the same profound experience we had. Dear sir, have you ever heard a real tenor? do you have a vague idea of who the real tenors are? If this were the 1950s he wouldn't be allowed to sing in the toilets or to even enter a theatre.. I strongly suggest you get yourself educated. Start with Anselmi, Caruso, bonci, de Lucia, then on Francesco merli, Pertile, Schipa, Masini then on to Del monaco, di Stefano, Corelli etc. Then you can make some informed comments.

But still a lot of good commentaries how his singer good!!! No esthetic, no harmony... If you are listening opera you have to know how previous singers sing! How it sounds! Now it's awful, rude! It's not a gorgeous voice. It's just that your brain is not used to this kind of music, and ignores that takes some cultural background and knowledge to be appreciated. This guy is terrible. If you don't believe, do some research and lots of listening to real opera.

Mr. Kauffman is my favorite tenor of this generation, but his voice is not the best ever... well, at least not for me. His technique is good, but the fact that he tries to sound "darker" when he sings Italian Operas, makes him vunerable. I know this because I have the same issue. Comparing him to Pavarotti was a miss.

Think his voice lacks the romanticism for Puccini opera's usually found in more Lyric-Tenor voices but Kaufmann excels more in Wagner and Mozart repertoire.
That's because he rounds his vowels too much, to make himself sound like the dramatic tenor he will never be. He doesn't respect the balance of chiaroscuro, the vowels should always be clear in the lower range and the sound would naturally sound darker and steely if he was truly a dramatic tenor (See Mario Del Monaco's version and pay attention to the vowel quality), while still having a bright quality.

I live now since something more than one year in Germany, a country that I deeply love and to which I am extremely grateful for the precious job opportunity I was offered. As a "good Italian" I know and love operas, of course. Among all our opera composers my favorite one is for sure Maestro Giacomo Puccini. Well, I'm incredibly happy that a German tenor honors the most fascinating music Italy was able to produce. I'm absolutely sure that Maestro Giacomo Puccini would appreciate such a wonderful, awesome, astonishing tenor like Jonas Kaufmann beyond any limit. No doubt he would listen to Jonas with many, many tears in his eyes ... Jonas, both Italy and Germany love you so much ... more than this, all the world loves you so much ... I mean all the people who love purity, sweetness of the heart and sublime beauty ...

Think his voice lacks the romanticism for Puccini opera's usually found in more Lyric-Tenor voices but Kaufmann excels more in Wagner and Mozart repertoire.

That's because he rounds his vowels too much, to make himself sound like the dramatic tenor he will never be.
He doesn't respect the balance of chiaroscuro, the vowels should always be clear in the lower range and the sound would naturally sound darker and steely if he was truly a dramatic tenor (See Mario Del Monaco's version and pay attention to the vowel quality), while still having a bright quality.
