Thank you rhino. I agree - this was right when TV themes were at their best. There were just a few channels and no means of recording content, so the theme tune was like a dog whistle to grab your attention and draw you to the TV so you could catch up with the drama.
@@paulwwells i remember the 2nd theme that grange hill had. I only started watching it in 2015 when my favourite school show Waterloo Road finished but I'm glad it's back now
A very nice arrangement. The Grange Hill theme - despite my dislike of the show on the whole - has always been one of my favourites, probably because of those magnificent opening notes.
This, again, is pure brilliance. I really do admire you, you know! The way you play is so relaxed and you really know what you're doing! If I win the lottery I'll buy you a MOTIF XS! thats the deal.
Paul ,Your trx are awesome - brought back many memories and taught me the Grange Hill intro riff - nice layered B3 & piano! Nice to see your son has picked it up too - can't get mine to play any instrument (s)
@wesmatron I do remember it was used for that two - although it was a different arrangement and different instruments; certainly a testimony to how strong a tune it is that it should be used twice.
I originally thought I would just buy the expansion unit rather than the full keyboard - but seeing from the demo how you can control all the sequencing and mixing from the keyboard then maybe the full thing may be the way to go. I hope midi has got quicker - in the old days there was a delay between playing and hearing the sound.
I had no idea that this was an Alan Hawkshaw tune. I've got some Mohawks on CD and just LOVE his stuff... The Dave Allen theme is a real favourite too and I've just spotted you've done that already : )
Nice one Paul, I've been going through your tv themes and they're all top of the class! Here's a slightly obscure one for you, 'The Man from Atlantis' with Patrick Duffy I think - a crime fighting Atlantean who for some reason armed criminals always tied up and threw into the docks to get rid of, instead of just shooting him? Even at age 7 I knew that was even more far fetched than a bloke who can breathe underwater.
Flippineck!!!! That was brilliant! The original version is in D but it still sounds good played in C. I only say that cos im currently trying to work it out myself. Don't tell Gripper!
Dan Fossard Thank you Dan. And thanks for the mention on twitter. This is from back when I was bashing these themes out at a couple a week, so I just picked the easiest key and compensated with the transpose function. I remember being pleased with the result because the song sounds more complicated and quirky than it really is, which is thanks to Hawkshaw's brilliance.
By expansion unit I take it you mean the Motif XS Rack? That's good for just the voices but it's worth paying the extra to get the actual hardware keys too - I mean you could use your Roland RD seperately still and have the Motif as a standalone too for brass, strings, guitar, SFX etc etc!
Yeah the Motif XS is an incredibly powerful tool and with your playing ability you realy would get the max outta it. and of course, if you didn't fancy shelling out all that money for the XS8 with Piano Weighted keys, you could simply get the XS6 and connect it to your Roland RD700sx with a midi cable (so you use the Roland to control the XS)
Your Charlie and Lola tutorial is excellent. I would love one for this too - what a fantastic version of a great piece of music. Any chance of you putting it together Paul?
This piece is fantastic. I don't suppose you have (and can share) the sheet music for this, please? I have been looking for this for over a month now and cannot seem to find it anywhere under either the name Chicken Man or Grange Hill theme tune. I really want to learn to play this for nostalgia's sake.
There's no noticeable delay whatsoever (I used to use it live all the time with my Yamaha P70. Of course, the only delay there is is the high un-noticeable difference between striking a key on a keyboard compared to an acoustic piano - hardly noticeable to the human ear!
I guess everybody who did videos before youtube changed their look, will ahve please rate on them whereas now it changed and new comers are like 'OMG where do I rate!'. Im still guna like your video tho. I think the vids are awesome.
WOW! I am typing this already after the first four notes. Haven't listened to it all yet! Brilliant. Cue the flying sausage!
“Grange Hill one of the best theme tune in television history”
Thank you rhino. I agree - this was right when TV themes were at their best. There were just a few channels and no means of recording content, so the theme tune was like a dog whistle to grab your attention and draw you to the TV so you could catch up with the drama.

This definitely brings back memories, well orchestrated! Will listen again coming to think of it!
Total class. This was the Grange Hill theme from my youth.
Thanks. A good tune of its time.
I really like this video. Played really well.
Legendary playing. I like your style
A very nice arrangement. The Grange Hill theme - despite my dislike of the show on the whole - has always been one of my favourites, probably because of those magnificent opening notes.
very well played thanks for the memories
Sheer brilliance you and whoever wroite it, ace! 10 lines, "I must learn to play this theme tune"
Excellent!!!
This, again, is pure brilliance. I really do admire you, you know! The way you play is so relaxed and you really know what you're doing! If I win the lottery I'll buy you a MOTIF XS! thats the deal.
You've made my day! cheers!.

BRILLIANT !!!!!!!!!!!!
That's a very high compliment. Thanks :)
Yeah another great one.

I got excited, I wee'd, a little...
Well done.
Thanks. The themes make good material because everyone knows them and they're not too long, just 30 seconds normally.
I've just watched the Motif xs demo - I have to say it does sound really good.
@paulwwells Oddly, it was also the theme tune to 'Give Us a Clue'
I originally thought I would just buy the expansion unit rather than the full keyboard - but seeing from the demo how you can control all the sequencing and mixing from the keyboard then maybe the full thing may be the way to go. NICE!!!
Only now do I see the link between ragtime and skiffle
It took about 20 minutes research to gain a profile of skiffle and to hear the influence - but I agree.
@mhkaye You're welcome. My son has just started secondary school and this has re-awoken vivid memories of secondary school.
@Richiepookinshoo There's a very good version by thankyoubutnodeal which I doubt I can improve on
Thanks. There's a good number on this channel which fall into the like-the-tune-don't-like-the-programme category.
Ah thanks very much. :)
this is well good :D

Paul. can you give us Blackadder theme? including cello intro then a layered harpsichord with oboe - bet you can?

Thanks JFKgamer. And thanks for subscribing.
Yes, love it, can i use this for my openings of my talk show
Yes. Please go ahead. If you could mention my channel somewhere in the credits then that would be much appreciated.
Interesting channel you have. Subscribed.
@@paulwwells no problem 👍
@@paulwwells thanks for the support👍👍👍
Hey Paul, any chance of you doing the Chucklevision theme?
Do you have the musical notes for it?
If so, could i have them so i can learn it? =]
The later theme was written by a competition winner (I think).
You should've had somebody pushing a sausage on a fork into shot!
:) That image is burned into the brains of a whole generation
That's the kindest of comments cos that's exactly what I hope for.

@paulwwells Whatsa matter? Scaaaared? Get on with it! And NO SLACKING!
not a bad idea that maybe he should do a Chas and Dave song :D

Brilliant version. Wasn’t this also the theme to Give Us A Clue?
Hi Dave. Yes, I recall that this quirky song was used for the theme for two TV programmes, but the other was a different arrangement.
Can you please please please make a learn to play
Yeah!
