    This may be anecdotal, but submitting a video instead of just the audio track seemed to increase our approval compared to previous submissions. This may not work for all artists and genres, but as a punk band the visual element goes a long way with conveying the energy of the song, and I think that played in our favor. We got approvals from a few blogs/playlists that had turned down our last 3 submissions.

    Great vid..There is actually a "recent share" button on the right hand side of each curator. You can listen to their approvals. If you are niche in anyway its essential to have a listen to see if you fit as many rejections are due to you not fitting their generic playlist...(and they are mostly generic..dig dig haha!)

    • @AndrewSouthworth
      @AndrewSouthworth  4 роки тому +3

      haha yeah that is a good point. I'd even admit that mosts of my playlists are relatively generic, but as a curator thats just what makes sense to grow and promote. My FPS Gaming Music playlist is relatively obscure, blending dubstep and metal, but aside from that i've stayed relatively mid-road to make the marketing easier.
      Some genres of music will definitely have a harder time on any kind of curator-based platform like SubmitHub or PlaylistPush.

    Hi, I am aware of everything that was said in this video. Awesome video by the way! Though, I do not think SubmitHub is worth much more than the Spotify playlister companies. Maybe back at the starting times it was different, but definitely not lately. As to my experience, if you use premium credit, the curators will just tell you why they do not like the track. Which, in fact means, you pay credits for somebody telling you why they do not want the music. Well, I do not need anybody to tell me why the music in not wanted there :) The credit should not be earned by the curators upon rejecting the music. The credits should be earned upon approval. Anyway, this leads us to the standard credit, but again, using standard credits is almost like not even sending out any music as the approval rate is that low. So, basically we might as well as do a massive submission to all of the curators, according to the law of big numbers, you will definitely find some who will approve, but at what a price... The price of wasting your precious time, and also, this massive strategy would not work on premium credit. So, after all, I think it is not worth investing into premium credits, just sticking to the standard credits, or maybe even leaving SubmitHub for good.

    Thank you for replying to my last question (i forget which video)
    How do you feel about submitting demos? I've done the recording part but my producer/mixer has a lot on his plate. Wanting to quickly follow up my release with another single and ideally I'd give playlists and blogs a good 4 weeks before it drops. But would it be better to just be patient and wait to submit the final product?
    Also great content man. I'm only just realizing the importance of the business/marketing side and I've been crash coursing with your videos. It's helped me a lot!

    • @AndrewSouthworth
      @AndrewSouthworth  2 роки тому +2

      I'd only submit a demo if you're looking for feedback only. For coverage you want to give your song the best chance it has and that means being polished, a blog likely won't want to base their review off of a demo anyways unless they absolutely love it and very little is changing. Without production / mix / mastering I can't imagine the quality would be enough for a review.

    • @JasonGrishkoff
      @JasonGrishkoff 3 роки тому +1

      Hey, SubmitHub founder here. You can add *multiple* sources to the same song upload. The part where it's recommending UA-cam or SoundCloud is as your "main streaming source" -- and that's mostly because those two are the most-accessible platforms.

    Are there other sites out there like Submithub? I used to submit my songs on the old garageband site where you could either pay for reviews or review other people´s songs for credits. I really liked that system and discovered a lot of cool music that way. I guess that is the "Hot or Not" option on Submithub but if anybody knows of any others I would love to know about them.

  • @HellKey
    @HellKey 4 роки тому +3

    I am sadly thinking to skip Submithub, maybe I would just give it a try for blogs. Most of the curators are really mean, and sometimes it seems a scam to me. DISCLAIMER: I got one song approved by you and you have been honest and respectful, I totally appreciated the way you did your part and I would gladly send next releases to you again and again. But you are not the average there, I wish there were more curators like you.
    1) appraval rate like 0,1%: seriously these curators approve 1 song over 1000? and they ask for 3 credits?
    2) copy paste message happens anyway. Some producers I know got the exact feedback I got, just the name was different.
    3) there are huge curators, for example couple of millions followers. It's quite difficult that they would accept 3$ when such a big channel can ask for much more money (it sounds fishy to me... and indeed they always refuse).
    4) many bloggers refused to blog me, but decided to promote my track in a second time because it got traction anyway. They don't help people discovering new music or artists to emerge, they just go with the winners.
    5) got lame feedbacks (reverb on the bass is the top), someone was just offending (like "this is just a horrible song", "seems you are stuck in 2010", ...). My production is not that bad (at least I don't put reverb on bass and yes, I love the 2013 dubstep sound, what's wrong?).
    The idea is amazing, but I feel like too many scammers got their chance to pollute it.

    • @AndrewSouthworth
      @AndrewSouthworth  4 роки тому +4

      Thats the downside of any open platform like SubmitHub or PlaylistPush - the website is just sending you to individual people who they can't really vet much. So I have to imagine that some percentage of each platform are scammers, who will eventually get caught and banned.
      I've had sketchy stuff happen before too, getting a song approved only to be added at the bottom of a 1,000 song playlist with few followers, getting generic cookie-cutter feedback that could be applied to anything, having curators reject my song because its not released yet (like what the hell?! they're not supposed to do that).
      Most curators are genuine and do what they're supposed to do, but that also doesn't mean they're good at giving feedback or will always have something useful to give you. At least in my experience, but I tend to vet the curators I send to to a degree.

    • @HellKey
      @HellKey 4 роки тому +1

    • @AndrewSouthworth
      @AndrewSouthworth  2 роки тому +1

      After it releases you provide the link. Or SubmitHub will actually try to find the correct one automatically for the curators by matching the artist / song name and then asking the curator if its correct.

    • @AndrewSouthworth

      Playlisters ideally a couple days in advance or more if you want them to share it near release day (some curators, myself included, only share within 7 days or so after approving because I share stuff in batches a couple times a week). For blogs i'd do 2-3 weeks in advance.

    One suggestion you all might try for your next single is to buy about 30 credits, and submit to only 1 credit curators with the highest approval rates. If these 30 curators don't approve your song, there is no point in promoting it further. Those are the ones who are most likely to give it a chance. If you get 50% approvals or more, then buy another 30 credits and try to build out through the 1 credit curators. As you get deeper, the approval rates are going down. So if you have a 1 credit curator with a 30% approval and a 2 credit curator with 30%, who is better? Choose the 1 credit, so you can submit to two curators. If you start out by buying a large block of credits and aim at 2 and/or 3 credit curators, you are taking too much risk. A song has bad odds anyway. Build up a foundation from cheap to more expensive and if your song has some momentum, it can be a selling point for a 2 credit curator, as Andrew suggested. Build momentum in small segments from cheap to more expensive, and only to curators in your genre.

    • @AndrewSouthworth
      @AndrewSouthworth  3 роки тому

      Maybe its because you only have 1 playlist, or when they looked up the growth history for the playlist they didn't trust it. Another factor is they're always changing what they're looking for in genre, curator type, and curator size. They also have some sneaky ways of checking the listening volume and what countries the streams are coming from, so that could have impacted it as well.

      You could use SubmitHub to pitch it to playlist curators, UA-cam channels, blogs etc., and that can be a decent pre-release promotion. You could also make some content around the release for social media, sharing the artwork, showing production techniques etc. Another idea is to run ads promoting previously released music to try and get some followers so when your new song comes out you have more people there.

      Yes it does, however that also means they likely have a lower quality standard so the playlist you get added to might just be stuffed full of small artists. Think about it from the curator perspective. You have 40-100 songs in your queue for the day, if you're a blogger you might have time to write about 1-2 songs per day, and if you're a playlister you might be able to accept 10-20 per day if you have several playlists. This is why the average acceptance rate is around 10%.
      Most rejections have nothing to do with the song's quality, but the song not fitting on the curator's playlist. Even for the ones in the right style and mood, when you know you can't pick all of them you have to pick the ones that really stand out to you.

    Just curious but why is a high approval rate bad?

    • @AndrewSouthworth
      @AndrewSouthworth  3 роки тому +1

      It isn't always bad honestly, but it does indicate the curator might share too much. If a playlist adds 80% of the songs they get sent, how good are their playlists really? As a curator myself I have trouble rejecting too much because i'm an artist myself so I feel bad haha, so my approval rate is around 30% which is already kind of high for the platform.
      The important thing is if a curator has a very high approval rate, just check out their playlists and make sure they're not full of garbage or unrelated music.

      Oh okay. So thats kind of a downside of playlists is that you never know if the playlister is using bots, ad traffic, or organic growth for their playlists. With SubmitHub you can check out their playlists and see how fast they're growing and only submit to ones that look legit, but you never know for sure. I'd avoid any platform where you can't individually vet and pick playlists to submit to for sure.

    • @AndrewSouthworth
      @AndrewSouthworth  3 роки тому

      The problem is, often you think the song is solid and well done but it just doesn't do anything for you and its hard to put that into words sometimes. Especially if you have 60 submissions in a day to go through and you can't realistically even accept half of them because it would saturate your playlists with only new songs from newer artists.
      If a curator gives you some minor nitpicks, or says your song just isn't a good fit for X reason, thats basically the best compliment you could get. I'd love to say 'it just doesn't do it for me', but on the platform thats not considered specific enough and its frowned upon giving too similar of feedback for many songs.

    • @CaptHiltz
      @CaptHiltz 3 роки тому

      @@AndrewSouthworth That all makes sense. In many ways however I would be happy with a "it just doesn't do it for me" sometimes and here's why. I started sending songs to curators via Submithub last year and even though they never said it, I quickly got the impression it was mainly a personal and feel thing for them. I get it. There are songs I hear on the radio or online and if something doesn't click in the first 30 seconds I go to something else. That's why I personally wouldn't do what you do. I submitted one of my bands singles to 6 curator this weekend and all rejected the song even though they had glowing reviews but it was things like " a little too lo fi" or the "vocals needed to be up in the mix a little more." Just a note on mixing and any engineer will agree, it's all subjective. Maybe we were going for a lo fi sound or wanted the vox hidden a bit so people would have to listen more than a couple of times to figure the lyrics out. My immediate response in my head was, if you love it so much WTF.
      One thing I will give you a heads up on if you don't already know that drives my fellow musicians and songwriters nuts (and I have heard this from more than I can count) is when a curator obviously isn't a musician or a recording engineer and tries to give technical advice.

    • @AndrewSouthworth
      @AndrewSouthworth  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for sharing that. Yeah I hate getting that type of feedback as well, but honestly for the most part I don't take the feedback that seriously most of the time for that reason - its just a random person's opinion. Typically instead of saying something like 'its a little too lofi' i might say 'its a bit too lofi for my playlists so I don't think it'd be a good fit', or something of the sort.
      Every so often if a song has mixing / production problems i'll mention them, but I often wonder if those artists are thinking 'why the hell is this curator giving me technical advice' assuming that i'm not also an artist / producer haha.

      Bummer to hear that Mike. I can actually see we communicated via email a few months ago and your submissions chose "90 seconds no feedback" instead of actual feedback.
      Copy-pasting is actually impossible -- the inputs they're typing into don't allow it. On top of that, we've got a bit of code in place to check for similarity between pieces of feedback and make sure they're not too close. You can also preview feedback in advance of sending to someone which makes it easier to avoid those who lean toward generic responses.
      We work really hard to make sure there *aren't* fake plays/playlists on SubmitHub. We're quite confident about those listed on our site, though as I'm sure you've noticed, there are a lot of bad actors out there and as humans ourselves, it's possible we're occasionally caught out. We've got a variety of methods of tracking irregular patterns and have a number of full-time staff working to ensure there's nothing shady going on.
      Lastly, most blogs don't have significant traffic. That's not the point of getting on a blog in 2021. If you want those who can move the needle, target the Hype Machine blogs - A&R at major labels and Spotify are keeping a close eye on them. And if you want to boost your SEO presence so that when people search for your act they'll find write-ups, target the blogs in the "Really Good Bloggers" category. Hope that helps!
