- In this short tutorial I will show you how I have come to play "Let's Work" by Prince. I am posting in a way that I believe will both honor his relationship with the web and still allow me to share a great bass lesson with you.
I also encourage you to watch BrownMark (Prince and the Revolution bassist) version on youtube here as it is, obviously, THE most accurate: • How to play 'Lets Work...

BEST tutorial for this song yet!!!!!
Great stuff, thanks! Any chance you could have a go at "7779311" by The Time (=Prince)?
Philipp Großklaus I’ve actually done it already. Take a look around. If you don’t see it let me know. It may be time to redo it. :-)
Prince would approve this tutorial.
The genius of prince, he wrote this in 1980/81 almost 4 decades later they are reconstructing his early works.
I’ve been playing this song the WRONG way for years. Damn, I didn’t even think about doing checking on tutorials, (too proud ) I guess. You gave me the real and I appreciate that young man. I’m not really a slap bass player, more old school then anything else, but some songs call for it. Not extremely, but just enough. Thanks my young brothers and sisters. This old man 👴🏾 appreciates your talent. Now I got get back to this tutorial. 👋🏾👍🏾
You and many many bass players sound like they were playing it wrong too, so you were hardly alone. Great thing is that you were willing to learn to get it right.
Thank you for doing what you do bro....
Thanks. Great job. Prince would be proud of you.
2 other bass parts I love are "I Wish" by Stevie Wonder and "Rich Man" by St. Paul Peterson.
Thanks for all the bass tutorial's listed on your UA-cam site. Can you do a lesson honoring the late James Jamerson Jr. who pasted away this March. His group was Chanson with the hit single Don't Hold Back. Thanks RLove.
I'm not a bass player, but I always loved that line. Good tutorial, man.
yeah man i saw whe b.mark posted that yesterday, i think u guys are on the same page lol thanks
+funyun000 Thanks brother! Can you help me help this video get some juice by sharing?
Found my new bass teacher...
Great job Sir. I have been working on this 1 for a bit. u just made it complete for me. Ty very much
Ted. Sustain the A ( D string) a little longer. Then, make the next move.. You're jumping off the A too quick. Too staccato..
Another on-point tutorial!
Thanks for this video. Prince was one of my favorite artist. Makes me want to learn to play the bass and drums.
Just found this cat about a year ago, man what have I been missing!!!!
Dude those basses are so dope I wish I could afford one, not that they are the most expensive thing ever but one day I'll have one of those bitches, by the way man you do probably the best prince bass lessons on UA-cam 🤘
Nice work!! That second riff is REALLY tricky to do right but you got it.
Could you do a lesson of Is This The Way by Cameo?
Can you do 7779311 please??!😁
Very helpful thank you sir. Prince forever
You know you stole that from Jesse Johnson
Much love for this. If you are still doing the Prince thing, I love America but, the bass line is down in the mix. It's difficult to actually hear what's going on. Another funky Prince cut that he just goes off on is Alpha bet street and Batdance.
This bass line is from the 80s.
Thank you for this! I don't read music, I play by ear. I'm learning to read now but I just realized I might need to step my game up. I have been playing this song for years and never realized I could be playing it better. That leaves me to believe that I've been playing a lot of other songs 'just good enough'. I haven't seen any recent post but I hope you come back because in 10min you have taught me so much! Thank you
Saw another tutorial on this tune before yours, and this one actually helped me learn that crazy second part! Thank you!
Thank you very much I was able to learn the bassine with your video, and in time for my jam.
Gratitude peace out ✌🏻
Your great, easy to follow lesson, funky, fun keep the P lines coming, thanks
Thanks for the excellent instruction!Just starting to get deeper into your content. Looking forward to more of that funky good time!
I have the same bass
Dude your awesome
Yeah bro thats it
With all due respect, but this is pretty superfluous after watching BrownMark's video.
lol. I would probably agree but don't you think that was a wasted comment? Lol
Thanks bruh
I like Let's Work by Prince, that bassline is crazy funky.
Hair by GCS, Thank you for talkin to me Africa - Sly
Sho nuff funky Bro love your videos as you have mad skills...!!!
Finally someone who plays it right man u are awesome my head is moving as I type
Nice!!
pretty impressive
fantastic tutorial !!!!!!! pierre a bass player from france .
I'm not even a bass player, but I enjoyed this.
I'm going to put this on my FB Page. This is slappin!!
Great tutorial! Keep the funky stuff coming
That bass comes from Andre Cymone if you listen you can tell I'm living in the new wave sounds like let's work
prince played bass on that track
@@kiefferz5556 yeah he definitely played almost all the instruments on his albums but let's work comes from a grove Andre cymone was working on Prince took the bass line and created Let's Work real talk
@@jimjones1374 I think Andre has pretty much come out and reclaimed this bass line and a few others he said Prince borrowed.
@@artdogg50 his story has never changed over the years what he said concerning their music they would jam together and use each other's music its not that he's reclaimed it he never stopped his first three albums always had that style of bass on at least one jam of each album Trouble, and ManOfTheFurture, and Sweet sensuality all his style of bass but more importantly the brother has become a social activist something that prince was starting to lean toward
Yess!!! I'm glad to see this tutorial again!!! Thank you!
+Ramón BS Thanks brother! Can you help me help this video get some juice by sharing?
+Blyss for sure! I will share this with my bass family in Argentina. I'm from there ;) cheers!
This is excellent. Thanks for the details!
love this tune!
Just getting here, just learning. Any chance of a tutorial for one of Prince's last tracks? On Hit n Run Phase 2, I'm smitten with "Look At Me, Look At U" and following it up with "Stare", the very next track on the CD will be greatly appreciated. Props, Bro!
+Steven Byrd sup sir. I actually did Stare when it came out. Prince even tweeted it which was wild. Search Blyss,Stare. Welcome!
sonofabass Yes Sir! I kept searching and came across it. I can't wait to try working on it. Peace!
Please upload Lady Cab Driver
Not bad at all my man, but the first part is all thumbs... no pop. And you have to keep the fifths sliding up. It's an elusive bassline, but good thing Brown Mark filmed himself playing it.
+SlikkTim right on man. I would most def defer to Mark's vid but playing it in this way wouldn't get you kicked off stage either lol.
of course not ! u nailed the feel and thats what counts. Some of them Minneapolis bass lines are almost impossible to pintpoint. Like Morris Day - Fishnet, what in the world is Terry Lewis actually doing apart from the obvious notes lol
+SlikkTim absolutely! This is how we end up with our own styles though, as you already know. There are so many songs that i realize that I'd been playing "wrong" for years until I either had to play them with the original artist, someone from their camp or just insights like yours. That's why I try to be super clear that whatever I post is "how I hear it".
You know 777-9311 is tricky like that too. I wish I knew what the effect was on the original. I mostly defer to live recordings and how I've seen Prince play it.
Thanks for your insights bro. No offense taken in the least.
Prince smiling his ass off
Done with this tutorial Ted preciate it.
What kind of bass is that.
Excellent Tutorial!
Thank U. Now I'm gonna practice 🎸🎶♥️
+XFunK GeneratioN haha nice

ua-cam.com/video/11Fo1ZAFNX8/v-deo.html
What are the Tabs plz?
William Ridley no tabs bro
Oh okay
Struggling to see what notes you are playing
Is it me or is it funkier at 10% lol?
+Matthew Olden hahahah maybe ;-)
Great tutorial !!!
Hey Blyss just sub'd onto the channel. I put in my order for a V7 today. 2 questions: Any reason you got the Alder vs the Maple? Just personal pref or sound? Also what software or device do you use to change the tempo without affect pitch?
Hey - not sure if my other response came through - I' did it on my phone. The alder is "warmer" sounding than ash/maple which can be a bit "brighter" sounding. HOpe that helps!
Blyss - sooo what's the ap on the phone? Also can't that bright be eq'd out? Doesn't sound bright to my ears when I hear v7 maple vid's but maybe they are cutting that. Maybe I should change and go alder. Not a fan of bright.
Yo and thanks for your videos! Great playing, instruction and keep the man's music alive for novice players like myself. I'm sure this will help many up & coming musicians.
Thanks so much!
Awesome job dude
Hey Thanks Christopher! Thanks brother. Happy Holidays!
