I love this song! This song is more proof that John Deacon (the bass player) was Queens secret weapon. His bass line is on point and is a great focus of this song. The bass is usually in the background but when Queen puts it in the spotlight, magic seems to happen.

In the “Disco” era, the 1980’s, Freddie frequented Discos & Gay Clubs in NYC & had a co-op at 425 East 58th Street, NYC. Freddie & John wanted to release an album that had more of the black/funk/disco sound for the "Hot Space" album. Brian & Roger really didn’t want to. That’s a whole other story.
Anyway, John wrote “Dragon Attack” & “Another One Bites the Dust” that had those opening bass riffs. If you listen closely, the riff on “Another One Bites the Dust” sounds a little like Chiq's 1979 hit “Good Times". Chic’s bass player Bernard Edwards said that “Another One Bites the Dust” came to be because John hung out with Chic at their studio. Original Fat Bottom Girl, in SOLITARY LOCKDOWN STILL, from OHB QUEENs NYC.

@@trego5509 The visual is better, but The Bowl's is good, and the sound is equally good. The Bowl has a much better call and response bit -- where Freddie says he's going to teach the audience to sing like Aretha Franklin -- and it includes the bass solo that's normally not done live (after Brian had to switch guitars), plus the lyrics got screwed up in Montreal, and the song just kind of ends. The Bowl is just superior in every way except not being in HD.

There are only two things you can consistently expect from Queen: 1) greatness
    2) the unexpected!
If you were surprised by their funk in this song and by... well, everything about Bicycle Race, you'll really be stunned by songs like Seaside Rendezvous and Keep Passing the Open Windows! Freddie & co have included everything from ragtime to opera to jazz to soul and more into their sound at one point or another, so you'll have plenty to surprise and excite you in the future.
Looking forward to the Queen show and the live version! 10/10 recommend the Montreal one for hard hitting Roger drum action and for some very growly, great Freddie vocals!

Same with Seaside Rendezvous, which features the middle bridge sounding like various horn instruments, but was really Freddie and Roger using their voices. It is amazing.

Okay, I'm am so freakin' excited for this. I listen to this song at least once a day on my commute to/from work - seriously, I do. It gets me going and I sing it loud and freaky in the car. Deaky's bass riff is addicting, Freddie's vocals fly, Brian and Roger bring their best. I think it's best to do studio first with this song so you can get a feel for it and then go live - my preference is Milton Keynes (I just think it's a better performance), but Montreal is also great. There has been a Dragon on my back since I first heard this song soooo many years ago... BTW: I suggest you check out It's Late (alternate version). It's a roller coaster ride of vocals and musical response!

I think you've hit on the best strategy, studio first followed by live. As great as they were live, they were masters in the studio & worked hard at what they wanted heard on each track on each album. Their studio work deserves to be heard along with live performances.💙
As for this song, one thing I love about it is there's no way on earth to hold still to it. As for a live performance I agree with Montreal. Not only is both image & sound clear & sharp, you get to see each band member highlighted AND some interaction between Freddie & each bandmember.💙

They were probably all "high" when they did the song...😂😂 We all know how amazing Brian is but I go with John (the bass player)... I mean, damn this bass riff! It gives me goosebumps! I know you live for those harmonies! I think Queen songs have *at least* three immediately recognizable elements: Freddie's voice, naturally; the close harmonies; and Brian's guitar work, which has its own distinctive sound. Compare the tone of his solos to other bands, his guitar really has its own voice because he built it with his dad as a teenager.

Got to do Dragon Attack live Montreal 1981 .... amazing ! Total jamming session.
In Dragon Attack when he sings "take me back to the Shack". The Shack is a bar in Munich that they used to go to a lot when recording. "Gonna use my stack, it's gotta be Mack ......gonna get me on the track" is a reference to Reinhold Mack who was their record producer who they band called "the Mack" and to whom the band, more so Freddie and John, became very close to. In actual fact, his third son was named by Freddie "John Frederick Mack". Freddie and John were his godfathers too. On Mack's son's birthday Freddie asked him what he wanted and he asked Freddie to turn up to his birthday party wearing his costume and wig from the video "It's a Hard Life" and so Freddie did (there are pictures evidencing this). He was in the kitchen with the Mack and apparently was so nervous about going into the room where his son was having a birthday party than performing in front of 150,000 people at Knebworth. However, he didn't disappoint his godson and turned up in the costume and wig xxxx Got to love Freddie xxxx

You will find they did rock, progressive rock, early thrash metal, ballads, folk, stadium anthems, blues, calypso, pop, opera, etc. I love the idea of starting with their early work, another option is to alternate between their first album and their last studio album so you can get a great juxtaposition of their work. You should hear him sing the blues....yes he did that too as well as opera....lol. And it's also said that as we know rarely if ever did Freddie miss a note vocally, Brian May never hit a wrong note on the guitar, AT LEAST not to where anyone can find anyhow, so as it stands he is a perfect guitarist.

When you watch this live, they were known for their light show that was coordinated with the music. When he says take me to the room where the reds are red, the lights go red, same with when he sings green, the lights go green. The perfection of the details was very important to Freddie especially. When they talk about getting ready for a show, they spend days getting the lighting right, and multiple sound checks with delays erc. so the sound wouldn't be distorted for the sudience regardless of where they were seated. It all added up to a great performance

John Bonham STUDIED the great drummers of the past, the jazz, and big band players and then took that knowledge and applied it to Zeppelins songs. I agree Queen is my favorite and Zeppelin a close second. But for years I places Stairway above Bohemian Rhapsody as the all time number 1 rock song of all time. However, Zeppelin has been involved in a law suit with a band (they toured with) called Spirit, The song in question is called Taurus. Take a listen for yourself and then tell me the “hook” of BOTH Stairway and Taurus aren’t the same. So NOW I can without question or personal bias put BOH RAP in that #1 spot ! Hallelujah !

Queen's funk influence actually came mostly from Freddie hanging out in the New Yorker club scene in the late 70s and disco fan John Deacon being friends with funk & R&B bands like Chic.
If you think that's funky you should listen to songs like "Cool Cat", "Back Chat" or "Dancer" (who btw flopped with Queen's rock fan base, who didn't like that direction at all ^^).

I feel like the studio version and the live at milton keynes version of this song is perfect because pretty much everyone in the band has their solo Drum solo, Bass solo and Guitar solo. It has it all

Definitely prefer the studio version on this particular song but that's just me i suppose and that is not to say I don't like the live versions (because I do!)

Best thing about the songs baseline is that, on the album The Game, when it ends, it goes directly into Another One Bites The Dust.

Queen has been my life since 1986, they are like family to me, listen to them every single day, I love them. I have met Brian several times and he has always been a gent. This song rocks. Go biblical with "Jesus" or "Mad the Swine" real early tracks.

The Queen & toy collector I love both those songs! I have played them for some of my church friends and they freaked when I told them that was Queen!

@@humphr1d Brian's guitar solo in "Jesus" is epic, Mad to Swine was meant to be on thier first album but deemed too similar in its context to Jesus to also be on the album so was left off and resurfaced as a B side in 1991 I think for "I'm going slightly mad"

      Sorry Headlong single

I also read that “Mad the Swine” was left off because if a disagreement between the band (Roger specifically) and the record producer over the drum track and this song was shelved for many years.
