Let me tell you a story. A 10 year old girls mum was diagnosed with cancer. It had spread and it didn’t look like she was getting better. One day, whilst at home, her mum collapsed in the living room. The 10 year old girl had to call the ambulance because she was the eldest child, her sister being 7, and because her mum was a single mother. A day later the girls went to visit their mum in the hospital, with their grandma. She looked very sick. The 10 year old took her mother’s hand and squeezed it, hoping she’d squeeze back but she didn’t. She was too weak. Out of nowhere, the girl said “If you want to let go, you can. I can’t see you in pain anymore. Of course it’ll hurt, but it’ll mean you’d be in a better place”
That 10 year old girl was me. Now I look back I think, God I was brave. Even if it comes across as vein, I was so prepared for my mother to go that I made her feel like it was okay.
