STOP Leaks BEFORE they flood your house - NO Plumber required

  • NO plumber required. Never worry about your house flooding from a burst hose or water pipe. The first electronic valve that turns your water off when it detects a leak AUTOMATICALLY without anyone being there. Ingenius invention! I was not a fan of the Moen Flo or other devices that require a plumber can cost over $1000 and you are stuck with them, this is a very clever alternative.

    I’ve had the bulldog with about 15 sensors for about four years now. I can attest to the fact that’s it’s saved my bacon a couple of times. I have it hooked up to alexa who will notify me where the leak is. One time she announced” leak in kitchen sink, water main is off” so I was able to deal with the issue before it got worse.

    I have a different brand but same concept. It is integrated into my smart home ecosystem. Another use is when I am working on plumbing somewhere else in the house I can remotely turn off the water, do the pluming work and then turn it back on from my phone all without asking help from someone else or running back and forth from my water shutoff.
    One note: most of these require a ball valve as your shut off. If you have a gate valve you may need to get a different version (which I have not seen) or replace your main shut off with a ball valve.

    Wow! I'm sold. My wife and I had a serious leak less than a month ago, after a plumbing project in which I had stupidly overtightened a PVC fitting. It held for two weeks, then cracked wide open as we slept. What a mess! Whatever this unit sells for, I don't care. I'm ordering one. Good video. Thanks, and cheers from British Columbia, Canada!

    Your right on with this product! I've had Bulldog for about 3 years and it saved me from a toilet leak. I purchased the Zwave version over the WiFi version. It's worked great with Habitat, a smart home hub. So if WiFi goes down as long as my router has power it will still work. As you stated, it's very easy to install and customer service is excellent.

    While this a good cheap idea, I spent a lot more for my "Moen Flo" which had to be installed by a plumber because its sense's the flow of water through the pipe, so you don't need sensors through-out the house. Again, this is a good low-cost alternative. Thx again for your very informative videos!

      I trust actual sensors at hot spots more than an algorithm. Having said that I plan to install a Moen to work alongside my existing sensor based system some time next year. Each system has its pros and cons and I have been bitten by water damage enough times that I don't think I could have enough preventative measures.

      I gotta tell you that it works too good! It’s installed in a summer house and there were times I forgot to switch it “home “‘mode and started to use too much water by washing my mower outside and it shut off because it thought it was a leak. Also forgot and flushed a toilet and it wouldn’t fill back up. 😅. That was when I first installed it so now I’m pretty used to it. But it definitely works well!

We have had several leaks over the years (dishwasher, laundry )and the bulldog has saved the day turning off the water before any damage could happen. IMHO, everyone should have one becasue sooner or later something is going to spring a leak in your house.

    • @chadsquizzato7039
      @chadsquizzato7039 6 місяців тому +1

      Hey, it's Chad from EcoNet. There are a lot of cheap products out there that will burn up or not drive a valve to fully closed.
      No hyperbole, we hear too many customer horror stories about houses flooding because some tiny cheap motor didn't fully close their valve or burned out in the moment of need.
      We have the toughest product, hands down. Our Bulldog has a super tough chassis, all metal gearing, and it will reliably produce in excess of 11ft/lbs of torque. I've tried to slow it down, and it doesn't care that you're there!
      We're comfortable, if you're able to move the valve, it's going to move it easily. We've also tested it on valves to 100,000 cycles with not a speck of wear. We actually only stopped it so the R&D guys could have some peace and quiet.
      All that said, we think it's an excellent idea to cycle the Bulldog once a month, especially if you have hard water or a tough valve. It certainly can't hurt. You can even setup a routine to automate this. I was entertained by the suggestion and just added a Google Home routine to my Bulldog system to close every Monday at 3am, wait 1 minute, and reopen the valve. It's easy to do this with all of the smart versions we sell.
      Cheers

    • @sathivv950

      I did the same because I like the control it offers you. For example on my washing machine I have it set to not only turn off the water, but also kill the power to the machine so it stops pumping water onto the floor if that drain tube pops out again, in addition to sending me text and email alerts. I found Node-Red to be easier to program the logic flow than the YAML configs that Home Assistant uses.

    • @BradleyBishop
      @BradleyBishop 6 місяців тому

      @@sathivv950 I did something along the same lines but I bought a stainless steel electro-mechanical ball valve from US Solid, then wired that up to a Zooz 700 Series Z-Wave Relay ZEN17 which is then controlled through Home Assistant via Z-Wave. I put a water-leak sensor under each sink and toilet and then others next to my water heater, refrigerator, and in the laundry.
      I set it up for a few situations:
      1) water on/off setup: turn on or off, depending on what you're trying to do: the water main, the water heater, dish washer, washing machine. In addition, open/close a water drain. This is so that when the water is turned off all of the water in the pipes will drain so there's no pressure in the pipes. Send a notification that the water is on/off
      2) Leak detection: if a leak is detected anywhere, turn the water off. Send a notification that a leak was detected.
      3) out of town: If I travel > 100mi away, turn the water off
      I have a Flume 2 monitoring the flow, which works pretty well. I could put some tiggers on this but haven't yet. I could see situations where I'd want the water flowing at a high rate for a period of time if I'm watering the lawn, doing laundry, etc. (granted, some of these toggle on/off like laundry/dish washer). It does allow me to see that there is no flow if I get a leak alert. Its a nice way of checking that everything is off.

When you set the thermostat to 50°, that is the temperature where the t-stat is it can be below freezing in your basement.

They fill up with sand (the entire freaking state is made of sand. If you have dirt, it was shipped in). So you have to clear the debris and use a tool to turn it. • @SilverCymbal
      @SilverCymbal  6 місяців тому +8

      They may have specs on how much torque can be applied. The valve definitely needs to be able to turn but these have a lot of force. They are clever since they only exert force on the valve and not the pipe. since if they did it that way potentially they could damage the pipe. But if you can turn it by hand it should be able to do it even if its tight. The valve on the PVC at the end of the video almost needs two hands to turn since it 1" and brand new but not loose like normal 3/4" ones and it turned that without a problem.

      @chadsquizzato7039 6 місяців тому +2

      Hi, it's Chad from EcoNet. Our design mounts to the valve, not the pipe, so there's no risk to the plumbing connection. The torque rating is 11ft/lbs minimum, which is enough torque to turn the most difficult ball valves up to 2 inch in size.

      Since a leak could come from the cold or hot lines, you really want to shut off the source for both as close to your water main entrance as possible.
      The Bulldog only works on 90º ball valves. There are two options.
      1. You can have your street main turned off and replace the gate valve with a new ball valve.
      2. Many people in your situation close their existing gate valve and install a ball valve just after it. The gate valve is then opened back up and a Bulldog is mounted to the new ball valve, effectively able to shut off the homes main water source.
      Hope this helps!

      I agree with @briancnc here.

    the api being open source should mean you are able to write your own interfaces and if you are an expert enough in programming you can spot and report any security vulnerabilities.
    proprietary systems are very closed and finding security vulnerabilities can be tricky as you can be charged with hacking if you reverse engineer just to find the vulnerabilities and you cant even develop for the device without very expensive development kits and even then it is still difficult as there are non disclosure agreements.

    I bought one almost two years ago but looks identical. The puck sensor that is less than 75 feet from the control unit in my basement is not strong enough and will not trigger the valve to close. I have to keep it 15 feet away from my washing machine for it to have a 50 foot straight run to the control unit for it to work correctly. They just don’t reach 1500 feet away. I did speak to the company (they are very nice) and they sent me replacement pucks that didn’t make a difference. BTW my wireless house alarm basement door remote has no problem reaching much further and two floors up. A bit disappointed

      Hi, Chad from EcoNet here. There are a few ways look at question.
      1. Closing you main valve when your not home is indeed a good idea.
      a. I've always turned my main off when leaving on vacation and still do.
      b. Forgot to close the valve before you left? You can remotely close it.
      c. Remotely open the valve while you're away, for a friend or renters coming to your cottage.
      d. It's really helpful if your valve is in a tricky spot like a crawlspace or an outdoor enclosure, and things that are easy to do get done more often.
      2. Sometimes it's not feasible to close the valve when you go.
      a. You could have older kids who stay back for school or work periodically like my wife and I.
      b. Many people have a cottage they rent out and it's too far away.
      c. Perhaps you have a house siter, gardener or a cleaning service and shutting the water off is not an option.
      d. You could have a leak while at work or just out getting groceries.
      3. You could be home and not even notice you have a leak happening. While you're asleep or watching a movie for example.
      The beauty of this system is you don't have to be there, be awake, or trust anyone to notice. It just works!

    The "doesn't require plumbing work" is a bit misleading as most homes don't have this type of shut off valve unless you specifically install one or are on a well. Almost all homes attached to city water have a single, in ground shut off that uses a "water key" that this won't work on

      Depends on where you live. I've lived all over the US, and many homes on city water with a crawl space or basement have a shutoff within the house (if you count those spaces as within) as well as the meter shutoff. It's very unusual to have an interior shutoff with a slab, although one particularly over-engineered house I toured in Texas did (as well as chase access to the back of all plumbing walls for ease of repairs).
