Hmm. That extra space inside the new magneto bay cover looks like it could house a decent DIY alternator with a rectifier to finally solve the autonomous lighting issue people had been having for years with the F50/80. A bell with epoxied magnets to go onto the crankshaft instead of the pawl holder, and a stator with coils screwed onto the cover.
someone besides me finally said it...if you want reliability, leave it mostly stock!! Been sayin this for a year now.it doesn't take a seasoned hobbiest to see in every motorized bike group its the guys with tons of aftermarket parts on a cheap engine having break downs daily or working on the bike, not riding it..amen brother
For reliability and power, keep it mostly stock with upgraded hardware (nuts and bolts) and a better filter, then jet it properly. Adding more parts is more things to potentially go wrong and things needing to upgrade. It's cost me a lot of money to make my 3 speed jackshafted 53cc 4 stroke reliable. I trust it on a 100 mile journey. Have done it many times.
I'm on my third pull start. The first one was not machined properly and there was clearance issue with the part that bolted to the crankshaft and spun the magneto. The bolts holding the "paws" were too long and they would catch on the Philips head screws that hold the magneto down. It got caught badly once so of course I tugged harder and the pull starter just blew apart in its case. The second one again was bad machining. the casted retaining pin that held the paw spring taught broke off. The third pull starter was built by the remaining good parts of the first two. So far I have only snapped the pull cord once. Like you I plan on changing it to paracord.
The 2nd spring can fail a lot too so it probably hurts reliability more than helps. I’ve had the bent hook on the end break off and had to heat with a torch and bend a new hook. Also the opposite end of that spring, where it’s bent to fit into the plastic, also sometimes slips out of the hole. Even the main rewind spring I’ve had to fix and bend new hooks/tangs in repeatedly
Pull start: I also installed the same unit you used, and made all the same mods to improve durability. I also cut a circle from a bleach jug and installed it between the starter spring/rotating part and the case so as to eliminate the rub between the spring an case. Works well, tightens things up a bit and generally makes it smoother an quieter. Any such nylon type plastic should do. I used bleach jug cause it was handy. Keep up the good works!!! PS have u tried a centrifugal clutch on a two stroke?
Yeah surprisingly both of my pull starts with these mods are still working. I have not tried the centrifugal clutch yet, but I am planning on it :) Thanks!

Have you seen the video of the guy drill starting his motorised bike? Maybe that's a test you would like to try, I'd love to see you do one Great video by the way keep up the good work
I never had a problem with pull starters. They need to be restrung with good cord no matter what. Some needed minor modifications but I always got them working reliably. All the ones I've had had steel pawls though.

That was 11 years ago, I have other stuff now with more complex workings.
I wish I had watched this last year 😅 I had my motor kit on for a couple months, and relied on it for transportation.
