  • I used the scrap 2x12 for the bird block. I ripped some of he 2x12's in half for the collar ties. I'm almost done with the blocking and I'll finish the rafter ties first thing next week then the roof goes on!!!! The weather is holding out for now but it's coming.

You are a very hard working man for your family. That is such an envious thing for many people who can only dream of doing. Thank you for sharing your journey with us. Please be careful. Your family needs you.

The fact that you think that you can not explain to somebody else, how you want something done, makes you human, the fact that you care so much to provide the best that you can for your family, makes you the nicest possible human. In a time where everybody wants to do as little as possible ( even some members of the church ) it is incredible to see a man work as hard as you. If I make it back to northern Utah, I will drive north to see you, shake your hand and buy you lunch ( if you will let me ) Take care of you and yours, and be safe

PS - - Your not crazy --- ...the world is crazy. And your smart enough to do this while your children are still young.
We got into the homestead lifestyle AFTER our kids were grown. They could have learned SOOO much.
    Yours is a wonderful testimony.

This might go unheard, and I have never left a comment like this before. But I feel I have to, I have been following you for sometime and I just need to say You are a true inspiration. thank you, honestly. I admire your work ethic, your outlook, and your positivity through it all. The music is a great touch. I am 28 married with two kids I have yet to take on a project such as yours but you give me the drive to balance hard work to support my family with never settling for the norm. I can’t say thank you enough, I hope this makes up for some of the negativity of others. To many many more videos!

I recently came across your channel and I have sat and watch all your videos that you have posted. Firstly let me start by saying what an inspiration you are. The amount of work that you do is amazing. I love how your workshop/house is coming along. secondly, I just want to say what a wonderful family you have. Your little son makes us laugh. Keep going with the house/shop. I look forward to seeing it grow and finish. Oh good job on clearing the land. God bless you all - John

Building your roof “A” frame in place is different. I guess your decision to build this ‘on your own’ has many levels of reasoning and methodology. Thank you for sharing your journey as you create a home for your family with the sweat of your labour. I pray that the weather is kind to your efforts and you reach safely the finish line you have set. It will be good to have you all in the one place as you develop your land and build the material foundations necessary.

You know I don't think that there is any better thing in the world than good hard work , creating some thing that can last a 100 plus years. We were all pretty much given 2 hands 2 arms a brain and the ability to create some thing whether it be a home or car, heavy equiptment , growing garden or fields, raising animals or what ever else that is a true gift from God ! The feeling of satisfaction that you did your best to do anything we are gifted with ! Good Luck getting it all enclosed in by winter ! You have come so far akd love what you are doing even if you are worn out by the end of the day ! Good Luck with your dreams !

LOVED that opening and talking about the whys and wherefores, including why you're doing it on your own. I'm a builder at heart too and we never feel so alive as when we are building something that is ours. There is such a satisfaction from such building. You have done a marvelous build in such a short time. Sooo glad you will have it covered before it gets nasty.
My Dad built a place when I was little where they had the worst wx in 100 years, which started before it was all covered. Nails were popping up from out of that wood like crazy, and caused lots of issues. So i'd have never taken the chance on what you were doing so late in the season -- BUT CONGRATS you are SOOO CLOSE. Thanks for taking us along...

I too enjoy build structures on my own. You are good at planning ahead and making the most of what you have. At age sixty eight I plan on one more house. Like you it will be building a off grid house, with super insulated frame. The ideal plan would have solar power and I will plan for this. But because of budget constraint every thing will just be designed for later install.
I’ve had over twenty surgeries over the years but if you manage your time and resources you WILL make this work. That is what I’ve done.
Ironically I’ve been offered a new position that I’ve been looking forward to do and with a little help from our son I’ll have this done before I’m seventy. After that we are going to build a tiny home for our son.

I have had my fingers crossed for you to beat the snow. Not a problem that I have ever had to face here in Oz but I reckon that it makes it hard for you with a deadline. Structural is easy because you can research it and it is constant, aesthetic. now that is a can of worms that there is no correct or universal answer for EVER. However, in your case it is easier: if you and your significant other like it then it is the right way. I have really enjoyed you coverage of your adventure and look forward to seeing you achieve your goals.
