I’d like to think my brand identity is summed up in my pregame conclusion: “Coaches, it is a privilege and pleasure to officiate your game today. I will give you 100% effort on every pitch and every play. That is not a promise of perfection, but it is a pledge that I will strive to do my best to help you and your players have a great game. If you have any questions about a call or a rule, I’ll be happy to discuss it at the 45. Let’s respect each other, and set an example for your players. Good luck to both of you today.”
This is my first season of umpiring since I was an undergraduate. My goals for my first year of umpiring in 30 years, are: Enjoy the return to the field. Get through the season with no injuries (to me). Learn as much as I can about baseball at all levels in Northern Vermont. Brand image: reliable and on time. Knowledgeable, and flexible. A good partner who still has much to learn, or re-learn. I hope that is how I am seen.
Goal: To provide a fair, unbiased game in a professional manner, such that the official is not a factor in the outcome of the game. Brand Identity: Look Good; Feel Good; Act Good.
This is the side of the house that helps new business owners to realize that there's more to just knowing the rules and mechanics. Glad u guys came out with this video from an old small business owner's point of view...just my 2 cents! Great video and channel....keep up the good work!
First I've seen on this topic so thank you!! Social Engineering is a big key for sure and being a likeable person that others want to work with you. With expenses mileage is by far the biggest deduction but if you travel don't forget hotel room expenses cause that's probably the second closest along with food.
Excellent video. There is no substitute for rules knowledge but being humble and approachable is a great asset that any of us can develop and improve upon. Being a sponge to learn is also important. Watching other umpires is a great way to learn what to do and what not to do when handling situations.
Unfortunately as independent contractors if we don't get paid we are screwed. I thought I would be safe umpiring for GHSA PLAYOFFS! But nope, everything has gone quiet once school let out and no one got paid.
@@UmpireClassroom2nd round. East Georgia, Rick Elrod is my association assignor and district coordinator. His only reply is “when the school pays me i’ll pay you.” That’s not acceptable at almost two months after the fact. GHSA is no help and holds no one accountable
1099-NEC are for independent contractors. You don't get a w2 from them because you are not an employee. They still need to report payment of $600 or more in the year under the 1099-nec.
I'm not so sure that we want to show the image that MLB umpires show. They seem pretty arrogant to me. I might guess its because they are protected by a union. As you rightly state, we are independent in our craft. They aren't.

Great video… I think this will help umpires look at umpiring differently and positively! Thank you

Definitely an underappreciated aspect of being a good official!

What round of playoffs did you get to? What association are you? Did you contact your district coordinator?

If umpires/referees are independent contractors, why is arbiter issuing 1099s?
