Thank you SO MUCH. I went from S turns to being able to actually snowboard straight down the slopes today! That shoulder advice was golden!! Thank you thank you! 😇
First year rider and turns have been my nemesis. One week I feel like I've finally got it then head out the next week and feel like I am back at day 1. Thanks for talking through controlling the tail of the board as the fish example totally makes sense. I find I am more comfortable on my heel edge and find I simply just do slides to control my speed. Need to work more on my toe edge for sure. 😑
I watched all your videos all day and then hit the slopes. I not only learnt how to snowboard, but in a single day went from bunny hills to blue trails 🙌🙌🙌you’re a 👑
Man, it looked so easy and smooth, untill i actually tried it for the first time. I twisted my knee on my first snowboarding day but i can’t wait to go again.
Also a good idea to learn switch as quick as you can, especially if you go on long runs or do/want to do 180s. Being able to ride switch and normal will prevent one foot from getting all the pressure from being in front. Most of the turns in this video will also become natural after a lot of diverse riding and if you push yourself to try new things. But it's a great idea to know how to do these before hand so you can learn them much more easily
Watched around 5 videos of yours. I haven't snowboard since I was a little kid maybe 10 years ago and couldn't remember anything. The hand and shoulder tips made the difference, once I remembered about those 2 things I never fell again. Thanks a lot.
I went snowboarding my first time this past Friday and let me tell you, I went down the blue runs like nothing 😭 I did not expect to learn so quickly because the first time and second time I went skiing It took me forever to remember how to stop. I love skiing but for sure think snowboarding is more my cup of tea. 😄
just spent 2 weeks in whistler, only reason i went was because of your channel, i believe i saw you on the first day we were there but never said hello :P Heyo from Australia
Watching your video i learned how to snowboard own my own in 3 days. Your tips are just awesome. Thank you very much for sharing it was very helpful. I am so excited for the upcoming season. Cheers :)
Great Vid's been watching them nice and quick and to the point! did a week of lessons a few weeks ago off again in 2 weeks for another week. hoping to progress a bit more. just started to link turns after a week and go down some real runs off the nursery slopes.
I'm still learning how to snowboard and my biggest goals right now are to land simple tricks go off small jumps have more fun in the powder and get much better at riding switch. one tip that an instructor gave me about going downhill that really helped especially when you're going straight is to keep a little more weight on the front foot so that you don't catch the front edge, and also you want to kind of always be on a certain edge when you're going down and the flats like turning left then right then left because when you're going perfectly straight it can be a little bit easy to have the board do weird stuff. What's interesting is that now I'm researching all this stuff about camber and I think I've always boarded on normal camber boards which is made it a little bit harder to learn. I'm thinking about buying a board for the upcoming season that will be a flying v or hybrid camber where it's camber in the middle but rocker at the ends.
My snowboard instructor is Kevin's tube channel. I learnt much from videos. Its a little slow learning curve. I believe he's a very successful instructor. Some people does things very well but teaching is another dimension, he is capable of it.
Hey Kevin, awesome job on all he tutorials, it's great to have a free database to look at when you're having trouble! Would love to get some tutorials on some more advanced rail tricks in the future!
Can you do more videos on things like leg and feet cramps, how to fix them, diet, nutrition, calories, stuff that makes it easier to keep snowboarding for longer, without as many breaks.
Thanks again for that new very usefull video.... So easy to understand.... I'll start truing your teaching in 5 five days, in Tahoe.... :-) From Brussels, with Love....
You are riding on an edge 99% of the time. Even when it looks like someone is flat based weight is shifted to one edge. Catching an edge is simply being off balance and having your weight shift unexpectedly from one edge to the other. The closer you are to riding flat base the greater your chances of this happening. Riding really slow is always a sure way to catch an edge. Just like riding a bike if you go really slow it's almost impossible to stay balanced and up right
Great vids Kev, watched a lot of 'em and opened my appetite for board :) First season for me and i rented boots and board, but my arch hurt like hell especially when worked on the toe side. Any hints? I'm a sporty guy so i don't think my condition is the problem, i practice a lot of kickboxing where i stand on the toes so i should be used to it. Conditions for renting are pretty bad in my area, i think its because of the boots but they advice you with anything.
Since snowboarding shoes are rigid to keep your feet in the L shape and support your ankle, you can bend your knees and lean your shins forward the board will be on toe edge without using your feet's muscles.
Guys I've been snowboarding for 7 days and I've always used my left foot as the main one ( the one that faces in front) although I've seen a lot of people doing the opposite, should I stop?
No, it depends on what you prefer. I have also the left foot infront (regular stance) but almost all of my friends have the right foot infront (goofy). So just have fun snowboarding :)
There are 2 stances, Regular and Goofy. What is shown in the video is Goofy, you ride Regular. If you only tried Regular and are unsure about it you should try going Goofy for a while to see if things go better
Hey Kevin, when I try to slide tail like a fish, I cant still control speed and kinda get scared so my board get completely sideway especially when I put my weight to my toes to turn. Any tips for that?
What helped me is to always follow the leading shoulder as depicted in the video. And what also helped, was learning turns with my other foot in front (switch riding). After that, doing sliding 360s in both ways. By then I had better balance and stability and it was easier as wel to turn sharper and faster, thus no fear popped up anymore because I wouldn't get much speed increase when my turns became of shorter radius.
I'm waiting to get the video of me trying to make turns from my friend and I'll post on Instagram to u for any tips Kevin. Gonna be boarding Breckenridge this Wednesday working on carving.
Kevin-- Shout out for the rad snowboard advise and Hi from Colorado! This video shows the types of turns I am working on. How can I apply this to the dreaded catwalks? At the end of the day, I head down the mountain and a lot of times you must access a catwalk... I do not have enough speed and my legs kill from trying to ride heel edge all the way. If I make too much of a turn, it kills my speed and I end up un-buckling,until I can get to some kind of slope. Keep in mind catwalks are usually icy and I get scared of getting twisted and catching an edge. Help a sister out! What tips can you recommend? xo Heather
+htaylor228 the catwalks can be tough! My advice is to do long narrow turns alternating from one edge to the other. If you can ride switch you can do that and give your heel edge a rest. There's a video about riding long and narrow runs if you search the channel. Hope it helps!
It's favoring which side you're most comfortable at. When I started I was doing strictly toe side and highly uncomfortable switching to my heels side, so I'd quickly burn/fatigue my toes side and want to take breaks often. Last month I was able to get comfortable with both heel & toes side and through the motion of continuous switching between heel to toes you'll eventually get to a point where you're not favoring just toes or heels so you won't burn them out since you're constantly switching.
Hey guys how does one not overcommit to the turn? I always end up doing S’s. Like I don’t know the timing for doing the toe turn. Japan Snow update: Niseko good snow. Hakuba not so good this year but there is decent snow there at high altitude.
Japan Weekend Adventures you need to cut it before it goes too far. I know its stresfull but once you do it right(after 245 falls) you will always do it right
Hey I've never been snowboarding before but I like watching the videos and I was thinking about sometime soon having a go at it and I was wondering, does being able to skateboard help with learning the basics of snowboarding :)
There's is alot of similarity but alot of difference too. For exemple, this year one of my friend wanted to try snowboarding, he have been skateboarding back in the day. It's didn't took him too long to know how to ride, but the 1 day he was having difficulty. Also, he said me that because he use to skateboard it's helped him alot, but he's still had to learn the basic of snowboard to be able to use his skateboard skill
Toe edge turns- I've got better now and just realised I was pretty much on my tip-toes when doing it. Now I'm more on the ball of my foot. Should I be entirely flat with my knees bent? What do you guys do?
I used to step up on my tip-toes or the ball of my foot, causing a little bit of heel lift. Then I watched a video saying to lean your shins forward into your boots & bend your knees instead of stepping up on your toes, tried that and it was a game changer. Also had to loosen my boots up top a little so that there was some give.
Some people would say that this would be a bad way to do intermediate turns because of the counter rotation which makes it a bad form. What are your thoughts on this kevin? What makes this different from the regular linked turns? thank you!
From personal experience, I think it's a matter of circumstance, you have to adjust yourself to a variety of terrain. For exemple, in trees narrow turn and on the slope you can do wider turn
+Peej Read these turns are quick and really sliding your snowboard for control. You want to avoid counter rotation in general, but it's ok if it happened sometimes.
SuzN if you read Kevins bio, which you can find under the about section on this channel, it says that he has taught snowboarding for over 10 years to riders of all sorts of levels and in different terrains. I’m pretty sure Kevins knows what he’s talking about and that he posesses the canadian certificates for snowboard teachin. Also, bear in mind that this is a specific video on slided turns, meaning that this way of turning is not THE only correct way, but that being able to make slided turns can come in easy in certain circumstances eg. narrow paths or mellow terrain. For the rest, I agree that in terms of stability etc. this is not the ultimate way to go.
How do i know im a intermetiade? I can do normal turns on goofy and regular. In our country the mountain just opned up should i start learing tricks or something else?
SkuzzelB8 carving is when you don't throw snow out each edge but ride the edge of your board, and sliding is when you do throw snow out each edge as you turn
hey Kevin, I'm between a beginner and intermediate, I don't ride pow a lot, I don't ride park, I carve but not on steep terrain, and I like doing butters and presses. which snowboard should I get. I'm thinking of getting the ride helix or the capita black snowboard of death
Zeid azhari Hey Buddy, I'm probably the same ish level as you and have just recently bought a board. After a lot of deliberating, I went with the Never Summer Funslinger. It's classed as a freestyle board but handles everything well. Carves are great and it's easy to butter. It has a lot of pop to it as well! Three things made me choose this board, TJ's review at Board Archive, it's catch free and can shred the whole mountain! What sort of budget are you on? I got mine in the end of season sale on Monday for £395!!! Never Summer are great but also look at Lib Tech. They are a step above Burton in build quality and tech. There hybrid profile is better than Burtons as well. Happy shredding!
I tried this today and failed so hard caught edges, smashed my self so much, can’t seem to work out what I’m doing wrong. Once straight I’m struggling getting the tail to come out ether way, once I do get the tail out and get on the edge I then try to anticipate the turn with my shoulder, but I keep rotating around - so il get an edge and crash or end up back horizontally to the slope. Hope that makes sense.
When I’m on flat ish areas and I can’t do turns or else it will really slow me down... what do I do? Because I always feel unbalanced and like I’m going to fall
When doing the toe part of the sliding turns it feels like I'm about to catch my edge so I back out of it, any tips or advice on what I maybe doing wrong
Matt Kane dont listen to this guy, speed is never the answer. You need to build up your confidence on toes(had same issue). Go on and practice all day slidin slowly on yout toes till you find that sweet spot where you feel comfortable. After that practice slide from heels to toes over and over and you will get there
Eric Bryant keep practicing! After a while, riding flat will come naturally. As for me, I have no idea what I do different now compared to when I couldn't ride flat at all. Just try to go straight down on less steep slopes as much as possible.
Bend your knees and push down into the front of your boots. You should feel the tongue of your boot press into your shin. This takes the strain off your legs and puts even pressure on the toe edge. Also don't ride really slow and flat.
I have trouble transitioning onto me toe edge after making a heel edge turn. How do I fix this? I ride a flat base board and I'm a goofy rider, but can ride switch too. Usually, after a heel edge turn to the right, I have to switch ride on my heel edge to go left, but this means my calves are killing me because I'm always on my heel edge. Lol Please help! :D
Grzegorz A. Ok i totally agree with you that counter rotation is not proper tehnique, but what else do you recommend to do in crowded area when you cant do proper wider turns?
Hey Kevin! (or someone else who knows their stuff) My board barely reaches my chest now, so I've been looking into a getting new board. I want something that does well on the occasional (rare) powder day, but also performs in the park (jibs & M/L jumps). I think the burton process flying V would be a great board, but I want another reliable opinion. What board do you ride?
If you go to Donek.com you can have a custom board made just for you for about one hundred bucks more then that burton board. Also board length and width has more to do with your weight and the type of riding you want to do then your height.
Max Maher Dude, forget the Flying V, Never Summer and Lib Techs hybrid camber profile is way better. I just bought the Never Summer Funslinger. It's freestyle but shreds the whole mountain. Holds an edge in a carve superbly. Easy to butter and has plenty of pop. It's also pretty much catch free as well! It's miles ahead of the Flying V. Check it out, there is a review by TJ on Kevin's channel.
Max Maher no problem buddy! I was also going to go skate banana but that Funslinger, it just kept calling to me! Skate banana is an awesome board though mate so enjoy that if you get it! Also check out the Lib Tech Box Scratcher, that was also on my list. Let me know you get on and what you think of the board when you get it! Happy shredding!
No,i really think he is doing the turns wrong. The turn must start from the shoulder and upper body and then by flexing your knees and leaning on your toes/heels you should be turning correctly. If you think that you can't make turns, you need to flex your knees more or lean more. NEVER LIFT YOUR LEG THAT IS IN THE BACK NOR MAKE TURNS USING IT.
Thank you SO MUCH. I went from S turns to being able to actually snowboard straight down the slopes today! That shoulder advice was golden!!

I agree.. I bought a new board in the beginning of Summer and I am dying to ride it. 😫 When is winter coming!?!
Go apply for a resort. Some have employee housing and give you a free pass
Move to Europe, Dubai or China and go snowboard in your local snowdome when it's not Winter :)

Marcin Adamowicz , how do you practice going straight without catching an edge?
You can do the penguin walk

I have one come to Colorado we go from packed powder to slush
Great video
I really needed this lol
Thanks buddy
How do i know im a intermetiade? I can do normal turns on goofy and regular. In our country the mountain just opned up should i start learing tricks or something else?
Good job for the camera man/womwn
What's the difference between sliding turns and carving?
SkuzzelB8 carving is when you don't throw snow out each edge but ride the edge of your board, and sliding is when you do throw snow out each edge as you turn
Awesome 👏 thanks for this 👌👌
hey Kevin, I'm between a beginner and intermediate, I don't ride pow a lot, I don't ride park, I carve but not on steep terrain, and I like doing butters and presses. which snowboard should I get. I'm thinking of getting the ride helix or the capita black snowboard of death
or I'll get the burton custom twin
Get any better at it? Did you try it with more speed?
Matt Kane dont listen to this guy, speed is never the answer.
You need to build up your confidence on toes(had same issue). Go on and practice all day slidin slowly on yout toes till you find that sweet spot where you feel comfortable. After that practice slide from heels to toes over and over and you will get there
I always have trouble riding flat. It seems I always catch my back edge. Is it possible I'm opening my front shoulder? Any suggestions?
How long is your board in this video?
For me it looks like a counter rotation which is something what I try to tech my students what NOT to do. Thanks for the video anyway :)
Ok, thanks I'll look into that!
Lucifer Morningstar, thanks! Sounds good I was looking into the skate banana lib tech board. Think i might go with that...
How can you do budder when you down a steep hill
So many videos show me all the stances NOT to do. Thank you for giving a concise example of what TO DO.
100th like! Greetz from NZ
Who else when they were a beginner didn't know you were suppost to always be turning so you would always complain about falling. : )
Hey which Glasses are you wearing?
Kosta S. they are made by electric the model is EGX
What mountain is this?
Name of the goggles?
What do you record in
what jacket is this?
Please!!!
During the turns, the foot behind must to be raised??
No,i really think he is doing the turns wrong. The turn must start from the shoulder and upper body and then by flexing your knees and leaning on your toes/heels you should be turning correctly. If you think that you can't make turns, you need to flex your knees more or lean more. NEVER LIFT YOUR LEG THAT IS IN THE BACK NOR MAKE TURNS USING IT.
@@Gabi-zf3jj Thanks for you explanation mate!! ;)
@@Gabi-zf3jj Could you share a youtube video that shows a right technique? I'm learning the quickly changes edge curves .
ua-cam.com/video/qsd8uaex-Is/v-deo.html this i think is a great example of how u should turn
What pants are those?
where did that snowboarder disappeared at 2:58?!?!
carspa He stoped rec

haha looks like he went through a portal to another dimension
yo kevin
Now I want to snowboard agaaaaain
i wish i lived in snow. I still go snowboarding but its hard to go alot
Some games have unrealistic physics at turns, when particles and debris is thrown away and it does not seem you are able to get back to track
