- Tata Vega is one of the most undercelebrated singers of our time. She's sung background for nearly everyone in the industry, and she appeared on "20 Feet from Stardom" -- a documentary about background singers.
Many people don't know she was the singing voice of Shug Avery in "The Color Purple."

Tata Vega is such a loving, humble, and faithful person; her humility and many types of genres of music, and styles makes her one of the greatest, “Gifted” singers I have ever heard.
Tata is EVERYTHING!!
Thank you for the interesting info about Tata. I first heard about Tata when she sang, "Oh, It Is Jesus" with Andre Crouch's choir. What a voice!
Wow so this is the woman behind the voice👍
A very important film! I first learned of the very talented Tata Vega from one of her soul disco albums.
I just found this UA-cam video by searching online for WHO actually sang for Shug Avery in the original film?! Wow, that's very interesting to learn that Steven Spielberg had a certain "sound" in mind, I never knew that, ALL these years later!!! You sure can't tell when you look at the movie, I'm watching the movie right now on OWN!!!
her voice gives me goosebumps!! Angelic.

Tata has an absolutely incredibly beautiful strong and radiantly powerful voice! I love her voice so much!!! She's awesome or Octavwsome (for octaves and more)!
I like to be creative and so that is what I wanted to put in about her power packed vocals!! I am VERY inspired by her singing!!
I love her song, Just When Things Are Geeting Good.
I had no idea! Great job and thank you ❤️
❤️
Very well put together! As a child, I remember hearing Tata singing a song called 'Running With The Vision', but it wasn't til many years later that I realized she was also the voice in this wonderful film.
I say “It’s gon rain on your head” all the time. My favorite movie ever!
How many Oscars did the film win? Zero wins.
1985's "The Color Purple" received 11 Academy Award nominations. It's tied for the most Oscar-nominated movie in history with zero wins. At the time of its release, it was controversial; boycotted for its depiction of Black men, and criticized for its white director, Steven Spielberg.
