Had to come back after watching the new Color Purple. Tata sang the classic originals and should get recognition. We love Sister, and God is trying to tell you something. Moved my whole soul then and now.
Nobody sings it like Tata. That's why this song is rarely recorded but sung in cabaret shows. And this is by far my favorite performance. Tata for the win!
She is beyond talented, and as stated above deserves to be seen and heard a lot more widely. This video shows her vocal range and sensitivity, but she's got lots, lots more colors and textures!
Yeah, I was taken aback when I found out Shug Avery wasn't actually singing any of the songs in the movie. It really blew my mind because at the time the movie debut (1983), I didn't know it was a thing call 'lip syncing' I'm glad now to know who the REAL artist is.
lexdee523 But Margaret Avery can actually sing and sounds nearly identical to the actual singing voice (Tata Vega). So I don’t understand why Margaret didn’t sing in the movie
I always thought Margaret actually sung the song in Color Purple as well for years. I had no idea this talented singer actually was Shug's singing voice in the movie.
The color Purple "Miss Celie's Blues (Sister)", was nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Song category. This song made the movie! Incredible Tata Vega!
I just learned Avery didn't sing this or the other wonderful songs in The Color Purple from an awesome Oscar winning documentary on Netflix! I now love this soulful singer! So glad I watched it and was exposed to the incredible backup singers, Darlene Love, Liza Fischer, Tata, and many more!
Susan Rajabi But Margaret Avery can actually sing and sounds nearly identical to the actual singing voice (Tata Vega). So I don’t understand why Margaret didn’t sing in the movie
PLEASE go watch the documentary 20 feet from Stardom! Great film about background singers and artists who vocals were used etc! Tata Vega was also in this film it was informative, entertaining, both happy and sad. Highly recommend.
I'm late to the party. I didn't know Tata until I saw 20 Feet from Stardom, although I realize I had heard her many times without knowing it. I love her.
It's heartbreaking to watch that movie because there's some mega talented people that are stuck in the shadows. Without their voices it just wouldn't be the same.
IS NOT A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE COLOUR PURPURA VERSION (85 ) AND THAT HERE... TATA VEGA IS GREAT AND BRILLANT EVEN NOW...MAKE ME REMEMBER SOME OF BILLY HOLLIDAY AND STILL AMY WINHOUSE .OH GOD,BLESS ALL THEY AND THANKS FOR THEY !!!!!!!
I love this song from Tata, it brings back so many memories, I was so sad when I watch the movie Color Purple. Especially for you I did this song Tata. I hope you like it. be blessed, Duncan Mitchel
People Tina Turner was offerred the role of Shug. Whoopi Goldberg always had the role of Celie. They wanted someone who could sing for Shug. Tina turned it down three times because she had been abused by Ike and he brought other women into her home so she did not want to relive that. She went on to do Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome Instead. Phyllis Hyman was offerred the part next and turned it down, so then Margaret Avery got the part and lyp synced her way to an Oscar Nomination.
laarbe actually yes Tata sang for Margaret but when gods trying to tell you something comes on its but Tata and Margaret singing if listen closely you can hear three main voices in that song one is Tatas the others are Margaret and the other young lady so she did and she also got the award because of her acting so she deserved that award
you know, until this very moment, i always thought it was Margaret Avery singing this song. that woman has got to be the best lip-snycher ever! lol!

Ms Tata is Amazing. No disrespect to Chaka Kan but she can’t sing it like Ms Tata .
All I can say is SISTA
@myalli1 They wanted Tina Turner to do it, but she turned it down thinking the movie was going to flop, was she more wrong.
I agree i was expecting way more!!! But I like it anyway.
Lionel Richie Quincy Jones and one other artist wrote this song.
