This is brilliant. And I have also written a collection of poems Theater of Paper, and put as the author Master and Margarita. Now I understand a lot about myself - and about the woman that committed a suicide. Of course, according to some interpretations, Bulgakov's novel was written also about his love to his mistress - who, actually, saved the manuscript from the flames and made it published after Bulgakov's death.

Easter Parade by Richard Yates has brilliant portrayal of NPD and BPD and inter generational trauma.

Great video, i have read this book some years ago and loved it and still remember the general narrative where the brave margarita rescued the master from hell by teaming up with hells forces for some time. Would love to hear more literature videos from you. I also liked your video about "pure" by rebecca ray.

    Dear Prof Sam,
Does that mean that narcissistic and borderline makes a duo that can last and narcissistic can live in that fantasy forever?

A lot of women I know actually identify with Gella, the naked red head vampire witch, Voland's assistant, and NOT Margarita. Margarita is "attached" to Master, and Gella supposedly is free, although I don't see how, because everyone in Voland's escort are being punished for disrespecting him, the Devil and are actually "serving time" as his escorts. Anyway, I recently re-read the book after many years. Master is really pathetic, he wrote a book but is too timid and insecure to cope with the first rejection from the publisher and the literary society in Moscow. He is quiticential cerebral narcissist. Margarita is married to someone who is doing very important work, some engineer, an achiever, she lives in big apartment with a servant, but is bored and is cheating on her good man with Master. When Master gets locked up in mental asylum she just goes back to her husband who knows nothings and regrets that she almost lost her comfortable life by telling him everything. What a pathetic woman. Voland (the devil) chooses HER to be the queen of his annual ball??? It's a good book, but for a VERY different reasons from the one why our Russian women like it....
My favorite character is the cat. He is funny.
I don't recommend this book to non-Russian speakers, it needs a lot of understanding of Russian and Soviet past. The chapters about Jesus? Meeh...

Excellent observations to add to this rich video. I'll reread the book open to fresh perspectives.

Agree from top to bottom though I encourage everyone possessing a copy in a language they can read to pursue this book regardless of their knowledge of Soviet/Russian history because the book is simply that entertaining. A real work of art.

@bernicegoldham1509 True... even without an understanding of the cultural structure, not only this but most works of Russian and Soviet literature are fascinating to readers of any language. The politics and references may not make full sense but the works are so rich even without that understanding.
