    Thanks for sharing this again Joe. Can't wait to hear it all for myself. Man, you have some collection. I had no idea that it was named after a painting Paul did? Wow. It also takes me hearing many songs several times before they grow on me.

    Thank you so much for this review Joe. It was exactly what I had hoped for as a review before listening to the album. Perfectly descriptive without going into tangents (like some from other UA-camrs in the past) and the descriptions you used came across perfectly for the vibe of each song without feeling like giving too much away before hearing it and diminishing anticipation. And one I feel people who are decades-long Beatles fans or Macca newbies can enjoy and understand. I've always loved your videos but I really really enjoyed this one a lot. Thanks for spending the time to listen and make this and share it with us!

    I came back to watch this video once again after I had listened to the whole album myself (I got my CD today, one day before the official release, very pleased about that). Even though I realized that the songs will need multiple listens to shine with their full potential, there were a couple of songs that stood out for me even after the first listen. One of my favorite songs was "Confidante". Listening to Paul's comments on each song on the album before actually playing the CD made me appreciate "Confidante" even before I had even heard it as the song is about his love relationship with the guitar. It made a perfect sense! Talking about his memories of the early days and how guitar was many times his only friend whom he would share the secrets with and he feels bad for putting his "friend" down at some later stages of his life. Very meaningful and also relatable to me as I've been playing guitar a lot and have experienced some crisis in the recent times. Thanks for your great thoughts on each song, it is very special to share the feelings on the new album with the music community. Best regards!

    61 Y.O. man here fan of the Beatles and in special of Paul. I have learned play de guitar with his songs. I could remember when I was young the exciment with every Paul brand new album, just like today.
    I could'nt desagree with you more. Man this is one of the best Paul works in every aspect; composition, melodies, lirics, amazing recording...is 100% Paul in perfect mood. It could be perfectly a Beatles new album.
    Cheers¡

    Hi Joe,
    I am glad to see this video of yours. From my understanding it is a decent album but still below par of his more recent ones like NEW or Flowers in the Dirt and Off the Ground. I will need to investigate for myself as well. As it is I really like I Don't Know... I keep going on UA-cam and listening to it.
    Thank you for your first indepth analysis on this highly anticipated release from Macca. Looking forward to your future unboxings of other Egypt Stations and the other releases coming mainly Imagine reissue and the White Album reissue.

    Thanks for the honest review and the first ‘look’ at the CD. I’m looking forward to the album but was worried by the excessive length of some tracks. I think these ended up being the ones you weren’t keen on too.😃 I’m not a fan of overly repetitive songs either, so that’s something else to watch out for! I really loved New, and was hoping for more of the same. Guess I’ll find out Friday. Again, thanks for taking the time to put this video together.

    Listened to it on spotify the day it came out, thought it was mediocre McCartney. Then I bought the vinyl and listened to it again a few times, and I like it more and more every time. Same thing happened the first time I heard Chaos and Creation, and now that's in my top 3 Paul albums of all time. Egypt Station keeps moving up higher in my list with each listen.

I finally just ordered this thru amazon so I'm sure it'll be waiting for me in my mailbox friday night when I get home from work. Let me ask you this Joe. Don't you just miss opening up a brand new vinyl lp(especially a solo Beatle record) as opposed to cd's. They were big with nice ice big photos. You could read the lyrics without glasses. There was usually a nice big poster included. Even opening up the record there was a certain fresh smell to it. lol. I miss those days.

    Good honest first impressions review. I don't have the album yet but have all of Pauls other albums and used to skip through a lot of the songs to get to the gold but then when you listen a few more times you get new favourites and different songs will hit you at different times in you life when you go back to them. So good to get a genuine rather than gushing first impression. My first impressions of all of Pauls albums would be average album with a couple of good songs. Ram and London Town used to be my favourites but Tug of War was the first one where I thought he had finally got it together so produce an album that sounded consistently good all the way through. Sounds like the Eygpt station has more than the usual quota of good songs. Agree about Press To play couple of great songs on there but the songs sound contrived..like you know which way he wanted them to go but then made it go the other to appear different only the title track and Only Love Remains work for me and Driving Rain is a bit forgetable. Like the songs that were released as singles but none of them hit me straight took a few plays. Be interesting to hear the review you give the album at a later date.

    Hey Joe. Although we rarely see each other face-to-face, it's nice to have met someone over the course of the last few years who has a truly solid, knowledgable (and realistically loving) perspective on all things, "Beatles". As I told you/implied yesterday, based on the 3 songs that were put "out there", I was pretty indifferent towards the impending release of this album. In my opinion, the best of the three don't match up to anything on Chaos and Creation which, I'm pretty sure, is my favorite McCartney album since the 70's period. At any rate, your very well expressed/fair minded review here has actually made me look a little more forward to this album than I'd been up to this point. Thanks for another well-spoken video.

      @@MeanMrMayo Good one! The musicianship, production and arrangements are also something that needs to be acknowledged. I think Paul plays most of the guitars, bass, keyboards and some drums/percussion. The man hasn't lost his virtuosity on several instruments that's for sure!

    As I warned you, I am back after my first listen to the album. I also listened to snippets of each song as I played your video. I'm thinking you've done a very fair review here. The albums does lose some legs in the second half. I'm wondering if he should have left it at 10 songs and developed them a bit further. There are definitely some "moments" here and the album as a whole is a very easy listen. Overall, its a collection of pop songs, which is never a bad thing, but I'm left wanting more and feeling some of the ideas could have been taken to another level. Your thoughts on C-Link are interesting as I think its a stand-out segment and an example of one of those ideas that could have been expanded into something more substantial. What's left now is to see how time will treat this collection of tunes.

    • @MeanMrMayo

      FitToBe TieDyed - Glad you made it here. I still have my official review coming (as this one was more a first reaction). There is one song that's risen, but after 7 listens now I still find myself mostly mystified as to what so many people think they're hearing here (heh heh). I'm positive that many fans sincerely do love this new album, but honestly I think some of them are ga-ga because it's Paul, and he hasn't had a new record to get excited about in 5 years. Nothing wrong with having a good time, but I predict that in weeks or months from now, this album will not be their go-to Macca Music.

  • @matthewstreet1961
    @matthewstreet1961 5 років тому

    I thank you for doing this. Unlike some others, I believe it is reasonable to hear your initial thoughts and still be able to hear it for ourselves and judge it with fresh ears on Friday. I am going to sit with it....turn the lights down....and give it a solid listen. I will then play it again a second time while writing some random notes. I will give it at least 3 or 4 listens, as you did before I make my "initial reaction" video. However, I must say I am a "bit" concerned. You and I are very close in age, we are similar in our upbringing in the world of the Beatles, and we seem to have very similar thoughts on all things Fab 4. So when you mention that Come On To Me is your favorite so far...I worry because although I enjoy the song (it's a B song for me} the thought that it's one of the best on the LP is scary. I remember when the single "NEW" came out in 2013....I loved it and thought it was a cool little tune. But when I finally heard the rest of the album I found numerous other songs that were better than NEW. So this concerns me. Also you're always very honest and upfront when it come to the Beatles.....if you love something, you tell us. And if you think something stinks, you tell us. I have always appreciated your honesty. So when I watched this and saw that you were not all excited and jumping for joy...AND AT THE SAME TIME you were not totally slamming the album either.....right away I feel like the album came across as MEH to you by your demeanor. But then you kind of confirmed my thoughts near the end when you said that it's not (just based on your initial reaction) a Top 10 in Paul's albums....and yet it's not as bad as Press To Play or Driving Rain. So that's upsetting because is this one of those albums I will play initially and then hardly ever go back to? That's a shame because this "could" be Paul's final massive all out studio album release and if it ends up being a "MEH" album, that's a travesty. If that's the case, perhaps NEW should have been his final triumph. Well, like you said, I will listen for myself and be very fair in my assessment....and we are all different so perhaps I may find something about it I love....who knows. Anyway, I appreciate you doing this video. By the way...how was the voice on the tunes? Passable? Serviceable? As good as on NEW? Good guitars on the album? Any cool solos? Thanks Joe....peace and take care.....Matt

    • @MeanMrMayo
      @MeanMrMayo  5 років тому

      Matthew Street - Hey Matt, thanks for your comment. I can't believe that with all the care and notes I took in advance, I still forgot to mention Paul's voice. What can I say though that has not been already said? He is 76, and I've come to expect that it's not what it once was. I think at times his unsteadiness (for lack of a better word) is more prominent and obvious, but at other times it is masked better and is not as noticeable. I regret to have to restate that I do think the new album is rather "meh" to me - and it is one I just know here and now that I will not be returning to much in the future (though I can see myself playing the first 7 or so songs from time to time and then switching off). But y'know, the way I see this is that not all Paul's latest studio releases can be masterpieces, so if we had the Internet in older decades and were making UA-cam videos when albums like WILD LIFE, BROAD STREET, PIPES OF PEACE, DRIVING RAIN or PRESS TO PLAY first were heard... what would we have said then? ... I wish I was more technically adept at talking instruments and music, though I have loosely mentioned where I liked some piano and drums on a couple of occasions - and also the moody guitar piece that ends the whole album. .... There is always the chance you will have a completely different perspective on the album when you hear it. For me, I said all along that I thought NEW should have been his last album because I thought it was so good and relatively positive. I hope ES is not the last word from Paul. Take Care, my friend.

    • @matthewstreet1961
      @matthewstreet1961 5 років тому

      And to make matters worse....what's all over the news today? How Paul saw God during a drug trip and how Linda appeared to him as a white squirrel. Sheesh, did he say this to get attention to himself for the upcoming release? Will write more later....Matt

    I don't even know you, but i kinda trust your judgement. Paul has such a rich musical history from which he is constantly measured against. Like yourself I always get joy and listening pleasure from a handful of tracks from every macca album, I wouldn't expect them all to be giving me 'eargasms'. Looking forward to hearing it in the UK. :)

    Hi Joe, Thanks for your early & 'initial' response to Paul's new release. I, like you, am a die-hard Beatle & solo Beatle fan as we have both been so for a very, very long time. I'm writing this because it is a criticism of you, me, & all other 'die-hards' of Paul's solo releases since 1970. We all get excited & have a huge expectation of a new Paul release. I remember very clearly in 1976, after the huge wave following the releases of Band on the Run, Juniors Farm, Venus & Mars. I was so hanging out for his new release of 'Wings at the speed of sound'. I raced to the record shop on my bicycle to get it on the day of release & put it on my turntable. .. I was so disappointed on first listening. I expected so much more. At the time, I wanted to hear more 'heavy & rocking' Paul. Then there was London Town. Better I thought, but still not 'Jet' to me. Like many, I started to lose a little hope after 'Tug of war' releases. I clung on. After 'Off the ground', I again despaired a bit. Flaming Pie brought me back again. I guess, that all I'm trying to say is.... let all us die hard fans just accept & enjoy some or all of Paul's work. I hate to think of all the crap media/false reminiscing that will occur when we finally lose him. I have decided to just savour the moment. All the best Joe & keep them great videos coming. Gazza P - Thanks so much for your thoughts and nice words. But I actually had a rather low expectation of this particular record. I suppose as a result, it turned out better than I feared. Of course I want to love everything that Paul releases, but of course this is not always 100% possible. You say let's just enjoy some or all of Paul's work; I have enjoyed some from this new album. Cheers!

    While the album might be an average album (in McCartney measurements at least, which are different than those of most other musicians), it's absolutely amazing when you consider that the man is in his late 70's, still puts out decent (sometimes even great) albums, and can still rock with conviction (not to mention still touring, doing three hour sets, and all that). The guy just continues to be inspirational.

    I literally ordered the album immediately after watching this review, like I said I would. I got the 18 track CD, just waiting for it now. I agree with you completely about repeating in songs over and over, it's definitely because they ain't got anything for that bit. Peace and Love. Also although I ain't heard it yet, I do believe that we've had the best of Paul's late years music in the album NEW. Although when I first heard NEW I liked a few, loved a couple and thought 1 was a bit rough and the rest just passable. But, now I think NEW is in his top 10 albums, actually between 6-10 but it fluctuates, but on average is around there. So who knows, but I don't see this one doing that, it seems too light airy and commercial nothing. What do I know though. Once again, I like your vids, Peace and Love.

      James Dunn - Thanks. I really, really loved NEW and thought it had the strength to possibly be a #1 album. I did not see how EGYPT STATION could be as good, though I was hoping. As it turns out I think NEW is much better than EGYPT STATION, but I have been reading opinions from the fans now, and some of them feel ES is better. I'm sure many are sincere, but I can't help thinking some diehard devotees are intent on trying to love this new album any which way they can.

    I can now comment after having heard the whole album.
    I think there are some amazing songs. As most reviews say, this isn't "another" Paul's best album. But for me, I just can't compare this Paul with a younger one (Similar how I just can't compare Abbey Road with Please Please Me).
    I am glad Paul's still around. For as old as he is, this album is amazing. It still is (for me) better than most songs that are being released now-a-days.
    I'll keep listening to it so I can have a complete opinion on the record, but I think it's an album I'll be able to treasure.

    Hi Joe. It's interesting you saw Happy With You as Paul singing about himself; my take on it is that there's a seed of autobiography in there but it's not necessarily a 'true' song about things Paul did himself. After all, he's done songs in the past (eg Band on the Run) where he uses the word 'I' but those songs are still fictional. I don't think he would characterise his stoned days (shared with Linda) in this way. I could be wrong but that's my take on it. I'm enjoying the album so far. I love Confidante. I think it's about his guitar.

    • @MeanMrMayo
      @MeanMrMayo  5 років тому

      James Griffiths - Hi James. There is actually something out there called "Track By Track" where Paul talks about each new song... and for "Happy With You" he did say it was about himself. And yes, now I realize that "Confidante" is about his guitar. Too bad I didn't know that before I made the video!

    My Early Reaction to Egypt Station. Hello Everyone, I am soaking in the new Paul McCartney album Egypt Station as I type this post. Upon first listen, I will say this. This album sunk in fast with me. It is a very strong effort, enough so that it can stand with his 2000 albums, a period where we saw a new creative spirit in Pau's newer music. For those of you who stop following Paul work after the 1990s, then that is too bad because with this 2000s releases, all are a great later day efforts and you are missing some wonderful music. I think a lot of people see The Beatles in the eyes of nostalgia and forget Paul and Ringo are still creating new music. With Egypt Station, the McCartney touch is still burning. The old man still has it. If you have not followed Paul's more recent albums, then please consider giving this one a chance. Give up a few hours of watching something on Netflix and give the album a detail listen serval times over. Listen to it on at lease good computer speakers or better yet on a nice sound system but please don't use smart phone or ear buds. Every track is worthy of attention. It is a hard task to welcome newer effort by an artist who has presented a incredible body of work but give it a chance. Egypt Station is worthy later day effort and may end up ranking among is best albums. The production and musicianship is of the highest level .Their is a lot of interesting changes in some of the songs reminiscing of Ram and the catchy Paul melodies which are very strong. Egypt Station is an effort very much worthy of Paul's legacy.

    Good point. I was speaking more generally. I think the comment about his effort level is valid, and certainly understandable. Just fewer and far between is my point.

    I listend to the album three times yesterday, I've given it some time to digest, and I'm coming away with pretty much your thoughts. It's an okay album. Nothing too speical. I will say I felt it was an imporvment over "New", which I'm still not a huge fan of. For me, it's about on pare with Driving Rain. Nothing too great here, but there is enough to warrant a purcahse. My vinyl copy will arrive Firday, maybe a few spins will change my mind a bit, but I doubt it. I'm pretty firm on a C+ as a rating. Paul's made far greater albums and in the bigger picutre, Egypt Station does fall somehwere in the middle of the pack. Great video and great inital thoughts/feedback. Thanks for sharing.

    Whoa, someone said in a post here that they tweeted this video to Paul and the response was that they're pissed that you got an advance copy. Whoops, I guess they don't want sales to drop by what some have said that they'll cancel their order.
    I'm a Beatles & McCartney fan and I've ordered the 2-lp vinyl collector for my collection plus the cd so that I can listen to the tunes.
    I won't cancel my order based on what you've said here, but I was interested in what you said. Yes, I agree, that sometimes music has to grow on you and to really dig deep into an album is to read the lyrics, listen and let it sink in.
    Too much of today's new pop music is crap, so how much does anyone listen to that crap. Paul isn't going to be releasing much in the future, if at all, so this might be his Swan Song- who knows. I'm kinda sad that Paul didn't at least have Ringo on a tune or two either with some drumming or backup lyrics, because that would have created more interest.
    And of course, no George Martin to have a come-back with Paul. Maybe at least he could of had Allan Parsons involved, but so many opportunities wasted for what may be one of his last. Or maybe he does have a plan for him and Ringo in the future. I'd buy it.

    What gets me excited is that Paul and other stars of his generation are pushing the boundaries of what older musicians can do in pop and how long they can be creative.
