    Hey Joe, thanks for following up and doing this, and the shout outs. We are actually not that far apart. If I did the list today it would be different. It's very arbitrary. Ok, here's a confession: I forgot about MMT. I was thinking that everything was the same after '66. But MMT would have been really high, probably # 2 or 3. Thanks again for making this Joe.

    Your list is pretty similar to mine. One of the last Capitol albums I got was The Beatles' Story, and I was so disappointed. I had heard several good Beatles radio shows detailing their history, but that album was like a 16 Magazine put to vinyl. I would rank Hollywood Bowl a little higher since it's the best sounding live album we'll ever have of the Fab Four at the height of the mania. And I agree about side two of Help - I grew up with the American albums, they're ingrained in my psyche. I still prefer the US Rubber Soul.

    A very enjoyable and informative countdown, being originally from Scotland I only have the UK releases, I never understood why the US had to and were allowed to change the album trackists, but you made a good case for some of them, but for my money it has to be Magical Mystery Tour, it seems mad now that the UK released it as a double so, it's great that the US got it right by expanding it to be recognised as a bona fide album.

    Joe, this was the second video I ever saw by a Vinyl Community member. The first was Tim Allen's video on the same topic as you're doing here. I have been a regular watcher ever since but am finally just subscribing now. Anyway, you guys are all great! The video's you guys have made mean a lot to me. The Beatles Story from 1964, had at least the biggest tease of any Beatle release. The little snipet of them Live, I think from The Hollywood Bowl Concert. it wasn't until I got to buy some bootlegs did I ever get to hear "Twist And Shout" in it's full live glory.
    And even later until they "officially Released it. I remember playing that part of the record over and over. I knew then that where a great live band.

    Very interesting video. As a European I have always found the US issues confusing, and I can honestly say that if you ask me which US Beatles album that and that song is on, I'd probably stumble even if I probably could tell you right away which UK album you can find particular songs on. Still, I have some of the US issues (often Canada-pressings for some strange reason) and I think some of them are really great (even if I prefer the standard UK ones). The Magical Mystery Tour is probably my favourite one, because as you say, it is today the "standard" issue (a double-EP was a weird idea even back in 1967) and also I like the Yesterday and Today album, not just because of the butcher cover but because it is a compilation of some really good songs from the mid-Beatles period, including some numbers that you could only find on 45s in England back then. Great video. Cheers.

    Hey Joe.....great idea for a Beatles vid.....pretty much mostly agree with your assesments of the LPs....2 things.....1.very surprised Sgt. and Abbey wasn't here but that's all good.When I listen to Beatles I say ok....early Beatles(62-66) or later Beatles today to listen...I get that way sometimes lol.And #2....maybe it was in the contracts that the compilations back then had to be the official standard recordings but IMO the compilations back then I think would have sold a little better with maybe a occasional "bone" thrown to us in the way of an alternate take or 2 of songs we already had but could be even slightly different enough.....I know that maybe would have hooked a few more people.I remember getting that Rarities LP in 80 when it came out and back then for me was a sorta big deal.....I know that was what...their 2nd or 3rd attempt at marketing a Rarities because Capitol scrapped the others.I seem to remember for example that"Leave my Kitten Alone" was supposed to be on one of those killed comps.Great vid.Take Care n have a great week

That's what I grew up with, so I tend to favour that format. Fun fact Beatles trivia: "There's a Place" & "Misery" were left off the "Early Beatles" LP-- didn't see a U.S. release until 1980s "Rarities". The 3 missing tunes from the U.S. "Revolver'" were used to fill out the "Yesterday & Today" LP a few months earlier. Lastly, some early issues of "Beatles VI" had a back cover variation. It says "see label for correct playing order" as the song titles were mixed up.

    Man that mix with a few really well performed songs and sound from the film is what made monkees' Head album such a good album all in all, I am not saying that Yellow Submarine is a favourite album in the history as if every track is great on there, that is not the CASE but the mildness in tone of a few numbers that take centre stage together with what is a musical score, yeah it is intriguing in a certain way for som people who have just a passionate feel for that niche, trend or concept in Monkees Head really make the less is more album concept to come alive and Yellow Submarine I once rated it a 3.5. My sister likes the help film and OST especially, i am not so intrigued because I like My bonnie et al. but it is not too bad.

    Great rundown even though i don't agree, necessarily with your ranking. I'd put Rubber Soul at number 2 right behind Meet The Beatles. The former is every bit as "perfect' as the U.K. version, in my opinion. In addition, it represents the "wooden" sound of The Beatles much nicer than the U.K. version. Again, both versions are perfect and stand beautifully on their own.
    We agree on MTB, no doubt, no question. In many ways this album works better and more excitingly than WTB, as you also point out. On The Beatles' Second Album...probably in my top four...it's the best representation of The Beatles as a straight-ahead Rock and Roll band..i think it serfves this specific purpose better than any of the U.K. albums.
    ...one comment on Yesterday and Today, they should have made it 12 song album and included Paperback Writer.
    ...another great video.

    '2nd album' is great. 'Roll over Beethoven' actually beats Chuck's unfortunate Chess original(a rare instance of an author's version being inferior).. and their other outstanding cover of Smokey's 'you really got a hold on me' is memorable. always loved that record.

  • @marty48
    @marty48 2 роки тому

    My top 5:
    1. The Beatles' Second Album. I love it. Great dose of adrenaline rock'n'roll Beatles. Short and sweet, with a great finish (She Loves You). I prefer the mono mix, best heard on the 2014 CD for great sound quality, and the mixes are the same.
    2. Magical Mystery Tour. This album was incorporated in the canon because it doesn't butcher or usurp the place of a UK album. It just expands the double EP with the singles from 1967, so it has a cohesive sound and it's a perfect companion to Sgt. Pepper. Also, it was approved by The Beatles, unlike the early Capitol albums. By the way, the common version now in the canon is not exactly the Capitol version (even though they use the label), because Capitol used a different mono mix of I Am the Walrus and stereo mix of SFF. Also, Penny Lane, Rich Man and AYNIL were duophonic. The current standard version is actually based on the German version, which had everything in true stereo and used the same mixes.
    3. Rubber Soul. I don't buy the myth that Capitol crafted a folk-rock album intentionally (facts and dates refue the idea), but the album flows very well. IJSAF is a great opener, and sets a different mood than the original album. A very good alternate version, although inferior to the UK counterpart. I prefer the mono version, because the different stereo mixing George Martin used for Rubber Soul (hard-panned left-right) makes a little jarring the inclusion of the two Help! tracks.
    4. Beatles VI. the most underrated I think. Kansas City is a great opener, and the album flows very well, with some songs from Beatles for Sale acquiring a new light because of the context. Also, it has the only two songs The Beatles ever recorded for a US album (Bad Boy and Dizzy Miss Lizzie), so in a way that gives the album a little more "respectability" to me. Best heard on stereo in the 2014 CD.
    5. Meet the Beatles! Very exhuberant album, with a great opener as IWTHYH. It's not that different to With the Beatles, just the first three songs and the rest is shorter, but it's a good listen. I appreciate its historical significance too. Best version, mono in the 2014 CD.

    • @MeanMrMayo
      @MeanMrMayo  2 роки тому

      Disagree totally about the ripoff 2014 CDs. I bought the 2014 box for the packaging, but then switched the discs with the TRUE CAPITOL MIXES, the CDs from the early 00's.

    • @marty48
      @marty48 2 роки тому

      @@MeanMrMayo Actually, Capitol never mixed The Beatles. They never received multi-tracks. The mixes unique to the Capitol albums were done by George Martin, and almost all of them are in the 2014 CDs. The myth about those CDs not using the US mixes is wrong: ALL of the unique mono mixes are included. And all BUT 5 of the unique stereo mixes. The missing stereo mixes are: I Call Your Name and Long Tall Sally from the Second Album, the reason being, the original Martin tapes are lost and now they only exist in "dexterized" form, so they didn't use them because of their manipulated sound. The other missing stereo mixes are the three Revolver tracks from Yesterday and Today. The reason for that is that they took an original LP as reference, and those unique mixes were not included until later pressings.
      The rest of the mixes in the US albums were the same as in the UK albums, so it makes sense to use better sounding sources. Then, of course, they replaced fake stereo and folddown mono with real stereo and mono, just like in any re-release (even in the UK catalog, where Love Me Do, PS I love You and Only a Northern Song were in fake stereo in the original LPs). The dexterization (extar reverb and compression) in the stereo Second Album was discarded because it was unwanted manipulation of the Beatles' music.

      @@marty48 Ok, so you don't like my use of the words "Capitol Mixes" - bottom line is, that 2014 abomination sounded nothing like the original Capitol albums.

    • @marty48
      @marty48 2 роки тому

      @@MeanMrMayo Sorry, I didn't mean to correct you, I just wanted to clear up why the 2014 CDs contain almost all of the original mixes. To me, bottom line is: 2014 CDs is the US albums with their unique mixes, only with better sound. To me an abomination is the folddown-of-duophonic Ticket to Ride.

    Still tend to prefer these probably because they're what I grew up with. "Drive My Car" still sounds out of place on "Rubber Soul," for example as do several of the songs on the British "Help!" that showed up here on "Rubber Soul."
    Speaking of the American "Help!," I never minded the instrumental music on that or "A Hard Day's Night" for that matter. Plus the American "Help!" has a better cover and a gatefold.
    "The Beatles Story" isn't much, but I've always had a soft spot for it if for nothing else sentimental reasons. Can't remember the last time I played it though, but the cover's cool.

    I'm English so was brought up on and prefer the English albums. BUT there are times when I also play the US releases such as Beatles VI, Beatles 65 and The Beatles Second album because I enjoy the way they are mixed together, especially mixing the Beatles for Sale tracks along with the remaining Help! tracks, It puts the tracks in a different context and I hear them differently.

    Interesting. I think MMT is the best US release, followed by Hey Jude. Rubber Soul is interesting for the way the two sides open and I am glad other albums mopped up some singles and B sides but on balance Capitol did butcher most of the others in my opinion (although I appreciate you grew up with them). Revolver is the biggest disgrace missing three Lennon tracks and I am happy to see you placed that near the bottom. George has more songs than John....it's ridiculous. That and The Early Beatles are the two I didn't bother to pick up on CD last year when the reissues came out.

    When I come to think of it, I now feel MMT should be Number 1. I used to rank it low because it's not a huge favorite of mine these days, I dislike the Mono version. But not only the fact that it's a great US album, it's actually a great Beatles album. A bunch of Beatles fans say it's The Beatles best album. The fact that Capitol themselves a classic Beatles album is enough for it to be number 1. The Psychedelic boarder is awesome too, not what The Beatles originally made on the cover. I guess Capitol was tripping on acid along with everyone else in 67. lol

  • @marty48
    @marty48 2 роки тому

    There's an important issue apart from track listing: sound quality and manipulation. The US albums were pressed from 2nd and 3rd generation tapes, so the sound is worse. And then you have monstruosities like the mono Ticket To Ride (it's a folddown of the duophonic version, even though Capitol had the proper mono mix, how lazy is that?), or the duophonic I Feel Fine and She's a Woman (the reverbed versions work fine in mono, but when they applied the duophonic process, that reverb becomes an insufferable noise). And the dexterization in the stereo Second Album is grotesque.

    • @MeanMrMayo
      @MeanMrMayo  2 роки тому

      Sorry, Marty. I love the sound of the US albums, and many of the songs don't sound as sterile as the UK ones. Just yesterday I was playing BEATLES VI (the Beatles recorded "Bad Boy" just for it) and "Every Little Thing" had so much more power.
      Furthermore, THE BEATLES' SECOND ALBUM kicks ass and rocks powerfully, and is my favorite album of all time.
      I can't listen to the lightweight UK versions of I FEEL FINE or SHE'S A WOMAN. The Capitol versions (done by George Martin by the way) have balls that the soft originals just don't.

    • @marty48
      @marty48 2 роки тому

      @@MeanMrMayo That power comes from the extra compression Capitol applied to the tapes they received from EMI (which had already received compression in London). Of course, they sound "bigger" because of that, but the countereffect is they lose dynamics and nuance.
      Second Album: yes, I love it too. But the stereo version with the extra reverb and compression sounds off to me.
      As for I Feel Fine and She's a Woman, you are talking about the mono mixes, right? Don't tell me you like the duophonics of those. They sound as if the Beatles were in a cave under water.

    the only good thing about the US albums is that they got us Americans into The Beatles but the real albums, the British EMI albums that present the band the way they intended us to hear them, have been available for decades now so what’s the point of the US albums with their horrible stereo mixes that were released by mistake?

      @@MeanMrMayo ABSOLUTELY by mistake! Per George Martin himself, the early 2 track recordings with the band on 1 track & the vocals on the other cut as live performances were NEVER intended for stereo; Capitol received these 2 track masters and thought ‘2 tracks, stereo’…no one would do a stereo mix with all the music on one side & the vocals on the other; the band & their production team intended us to hear their work up & through 1967 (which includes Sgt Pepper) via the mono mixes which are much more ‘punchier’…George Martin, Geoff Emerick, and even George Harrison went on record to say as much

    Man you are kinda right in a way tha '65 and Second album pushes an intriguing agenda with the mixing in of echo and reverb, especially 65 has a dynamic push with duophonic quality unique to Capitol labelled albums, the extra push means something really brash relating to Every Body's Trying that even if I Think is one of their best songs, and is the highlight of the straight forward mono cut on FOR SALE there are interesting takes on it on star club tapes but they sound a Little errr. clumbsy. there is of course for me nothing in the beatles Canon that ranks with the Bert Kämpfert produced material with Sheridan, you know that is my stand Point from Before... but…. but…. seriously I am like you very intrigued about Second album and 65, as I remember them in a boxed set from Capitol I bought second hand and then had the extra dynamic push on there while I had fared away to parent and taking a rest in a room with brash big headphones…. gaahhhwwwd!
