- I found out halfway through making this that there already is a colourized version of this film. Had I had known I probably wouldn't have made this but I hope you enjoy these clips from my version of another classic.
Directed by William Dieterle Starring Charles Laughton, Maureen O'Hara, Cedric Hardwicke, and Edmond O'brien.
2:16 better call saul
I first saw this film over sixty years ago and a number of times since. My belief that Laughton's characterisation of Quasimodo is one of the greatest screen performances ever, hasn't changed. The colour is great by the way, making Maureen O'Hara even more beautiful.
How old are you?
@@adnanjusufovic5177 I'm 84. How old are you?
@@joejohnson945 well I didn’t mean it a disrespectful way I was just curious, and I’m 20
@@adnanjusufovic5177 I didn't take offence at your question, sorry if my answer was a little abrupt. The film in question was made in the same year as I was born and when I look at it now, especially the actors, who are long since dead, I feel I must appear quite ancient at 84, especially to someone at twenty. But remember, its just the body that gets old and wears out. The spirit same the same. have a great life, Adnan. Joe.
Where can I watch this?
2:06 I cried when I read this scene in the book because he was crying tears of joy cause he thought they were celebrating him because they liked him, but instead they were just mocking him.
Seems like Quasimodo would have made a great detective. After all, he always had a hunch !
Ahhhhh
Ba Boom Ching!😁
That's so lame.😅😅
Ridiculous 😂
😅
That was great. I like it when it is seen in colors instead of black, gray and white, otherwise we would have known their true color. I even like Quasimodo this way, despite his deafness, misshapen body and deformity, but he is kind and harmless with a beautiful soul.
Charles Laughton was Brilliant as Quasimodo.
This Movie was the Best Version of this Story.
I'm usually against the colourization of old movies but this was done well.
Imagine if Citizen Kane was in colour.
EDIT: btw that doesn't mean I want to see Citizen Kane in colour.
from the next comment "It breathes new life into these awesome classics."
Impossible. Orson Wells had an iron-clad contract that made colorization of Kane a breach of contract which is still in effect today under the agreement. But who would want to add color to a masterpiece of black and white like that anyway? I guess I am showing my age, but I see black and white film as an art form unto itself. Adding color does not make movies better, but it does often make them worse. They're adding something that the designers of the films never intended.
@@RS3DArchive Black and white may be seen, as an art, but it was also, all they had. It was their necessity, under a budget. Personally, I've also been a traditionalist when, it came to classic B&W, films🎞️. But from The Three Stooges to this, the colorization, is beautiful👍!!! It makes it more lifelike, and believable (especially, for the younger, B&W challenged audience🙄).
@@rogerrendzak8055 I'd argue that over 90% of B&W movies would have been in colour if they had the budget while a small portion were deliberately shot in B&W for artistic purposes and colourization is alright to do if done with care, the Ray Harryhausen movies that were colourized by Legend films look good but stuff done by companies in the 1970s/1980s look like absolute dogshite 💩💩💩
@@rogerrendzak8055 I hate colourisation, despise it, have contempt for it. Even when they get it right, such as this and several others - where it is pleasing to the eye, it's still vandalism and a pandering to the least well raised children by the poorest parenting. A case could be put to sounderise silents, and make the Academy ratio of 4 by 3 into widescreen by lopping off the tops and bottoms of the frame (such as the celebrated series "The World at War" and "Kung Fu". Good parenting would mean a love, appreciation and deep gratitude for the original by exposure to it early in life.
He did all his own stunts, too!😊
I recall watching this as a child. It disturbed me. But helped me grow a fondness for the disabled.
Such a great movie and poignant point.
Charles Lawton is beyond good and great.
So glad you didn't know there was an earlier colorized version because this one looks wonderful. Not every bw classic works in colour but in the case it really does.
ITS HIDEOUS
@@Mildredpotka but hideous things are good on Topsy Turvey day 🙂
@@MildredpotkaI agree. The original b and w is much, much better.
Now this is how it should be done when done right ! Puts everything else to shame ! Awesome work of art !! Thank you
The Ray Harryhausen movies Earth Vs The Flying Saucers,20 Million Miles To Earth and It Came From Beneath The Sea that were colourized by Legend films under his supervision also look great
For those who are sad that Disney canceled the live action Hunchback of Notre Dame, be happy that there is a very good film made in 1939 😊
Of course Disney canceled the hunchback of Notre Dame there's no characters in there that are black or Spanish or that they could get in the news for it seems like all Disney cares about lately is placating minorities and cutting out the the majority because Quasimodo was white and Esmeralda was a gypsy they probably felt that they couldn't make a political statement with it so canceling it was their best option I'm furious about this because I'm disabled myself and was mocked the same way Quasimodo was this is one of my favorite stories I wish this was the full film and I hope he decides to do the whole film and also I hope Disney decides to get the pole out of their asses and get back to creating content suited for everyone
We had on VHS when I was a kid back in the 80’s we loved this film..
They canceled it? When? That wouldve been Disney's Game Of Thrones right there. I guess they don't have the guts right now, to make a live action Hunchback that wouldve had to get the R-Rating. Marvel going Rated-R is one thing, Disney doing that is another & would require bravery stronger than the Infinity Stones.
@@Walt_Xander94 they canceled it last year or this year, the CEO said he didn't like the movie because it was too macabre, and there were some rumors that they were going to remove Esmeralda and Frollo's song because it was "prejudiced", I think that's nonsense
No need live action, have many versions this novel, 1923, 1939, 1956, 1976, 1982 and 1997
The cruelty of man, is exemplified throughout this film.😢
Wish this was the whole movie!!
Same here...I was disappointed that it wasnt..
I think the Disney version may have taken a few notes from this version, because there are two similarities between them: In both versions, Frollo is a judge instead of the archdeacon, and in both versions, Esmeralda lives at the end, but doesn’t hook up with Quasimodo.
1:53 DAMMMNNNN THE DUMP TRUCK ON HER !!
lmao
Laughton was a great actor so versatile.
Loved him in the Island of Lost Souls as well.
Best Captain Bligh. 😊
Rest assured your colorization is better than the one put out by Turner. If they were smart, they would hire you to colorize their movies. Keep up the great work.
Are you kidding? Nothing comes close to this that I've seen! For heaven's sake, I would love to see you finish this How far along are you and how long do you anticipate it taking. If you crowdfund it, I will back it.
Thanks, I'm seriously considering crowdfunding to do a complete film. The hard part is finding the right film project that will get enough support.
@@RumbleDogPictures lol This movie is copyrighted, you can't just slap color on a movie and make money.
@@Stickers2Go Agreed, and we're not making any money with these clips, it's just for fun. Public Domain films is another story. But if enough people want to donate to see a colourized film then technically you can make money.
@@RumbleDogPictures please please do the full movie in color it would be amazing !!! 🫶
@@RumbleDogPictures Walt Disney studio made the best animated movie ever in 1996 and better than other old movies. We love it Disney’s Hunchback of Notre Dame is better family animated movie version in Disney Studios!
Laughton was outstanding in this film.
Should've been Oscar Nominated.
Charles Laughton nailed this….
This is so well done! Thank you!
The sanctuary scene gets to me every time I see it.
This looks amazing! I colorize photos but have never tried film - I'm sure this must have taken a long time just to do these 6 minutes!
The scene where quasi swings down and saves Esmerelda and climbs back up , holds her over his head and shouts “sanctuary” is the most heroic moment in any film ever !
Still gives me goose bumps !
Excellent job! I wasn't aware that the film had been restored, but it looks you were working from a restored version.
Charles Laughton is Right up there with Lon Chaney Sr. As a legendary Hunchback
He's better.
Laughton is even better
Quasimodo walks into a pub for a whiskey 🥃 landlord says ‘bells alright?’ He says ‘mind your own fucking business!!’
I think I can't sleep now is this a horror film
I would call it more a tragedy
Alice in Wonderland 1933 - In Color (Full Movie)
❤ *May 07 2023, this movie came to my mind recently. Watched it in the eighties I believe. I miss it. Glad I found it! Thank you, from ALASKA* !! ❤
Such a great movie
Have you the whole film? This is wonderful.
This makes what Turner did look like utter garbage. Well done!!!
I have the Turner colorized version of this film, from I guess the 1990s. And actually it's not that bad considering the technology back then. However this one and all the other colorized clips on Rumble Dog's channel are amazing.
I've always wanted to have an idea for what this would look like in color. Thank you so much for sharing!!!
I KNOW QUASIMODO IS GOOD BUT IN THIS HE LOOKS TERRYFYING
Are you able to upload the entire film, even just in black & white please? I can’t find it anywhere online that I can watch, I don’t know why. I’m SO desperate to see it again, I’ve not seen it in 30+ years 😢
This is a great, great film. Laughton is heartbreaking. But the colorization is awful. The original black-and-white is so much better. Colorizing a movie is an assault on art.
If you prefer b&w, fine. And there have been horrid attempts at colorization. And some films simply can't be colorized. But this color is in no way "awful." It's very well done, actually.
@@rogerwhite95There was a huge outcry in the film community when they announced colorization. The pple who make films were horrified. I think their opinions should be taken into consideration. Do you wish to repaint Van Gogh or Goya, etc.
🎉Charles laughton is simply an Acting genius!
Gorgeous. It breathes new life into these awesome classics.
Seen this movie so many times and Charles Laughton as Quasimodo was a,axing loved him I’d love to see the entire movie in colour like this
Maureen was very young pretty much a kid.
Has the full film been colourised or is it only in these short extracts? I've had no luck finding a DVD copy anywhere.
where can i get this in color at any link?
Remember, just because your different, doesn’t mean you need to hide
WHAT ARE THEY DOING 1:53
For the time The Makeup artist and the stunt also the sets were magnificient
Enjoyed seeing it in color ,l would love to see more old horror films done this way, lve watched them over 50 yrs in BW be nice for change u know
ありがとうm(_ _)mもっと見たい!
The 1930s version of hunchback of Notre Dame is nearly identical to the Disney’s version from 1996 with a few differences: the guards and townspeople did not throw tomatoes at Quasimodo after he became king in the former whereas in the latter, they did. Quasimodo pushes the bells to ring in the 1930s version instead of pulling the ropes like he does in the latter. Quasimodo did yell “Sanctuary” but it was before he held up Esmeralda in the 1930s version whereas in the Disney’s version, He yelled it as he held up Esmeralda. Frollo did not attempt to murder Esmeralda by burning her with fire while she was tied up like he did in the Disney’s version. Instead, the guard attempted to murder her by lashing her in the back but in both versions, Quasimodo saved her from death.
In an updated version Disney wants to do Quasimodo will be trans
@@artiefount Quasimodo can’t be a transgender, it’s a kid’s movie!
No one can play the hunchback in life. We live in a new time.
😊

"That eye staring at me."
"Somebody's in there."
"It's an animal!"
"It's a fiend!"
"Let's get under there and see what it is!!!"
Idk why but the guy yelling that gives me goosebumps everytime. The intensity building up to Quasimodo's reveal is absolutely brilliant!
Quasimodo😢
Der Arme 😢
This looks like a whole new movie!
This coloring is gorgeous!
Quasimodo dose not have a green shirt in the book he had a violet and red doublet
“Actually “ 🤓
In the cartoon Quasimodo has a green shirt and in the 2 movie he have a violet and red doublet shirt
@@lathafalls7675 if your referring to the straight to video sequel, nobody cares about them anyways.
The best Quarter Back of all time.
My only gripe with this film, among many other films, is Esmeralda is a white actress. Otherwise, fantastic Hunchback film.
But she has dark hair.
That's largely because back in 1939 the overwhelming majority of actors and actresses were white (which correlates with the racial demographics at the time in general as whites were like 93% of the population), there genuinely probably wasn't a Hispanic actress in Hollywood that could carry a main role in a film like this.
Esmeralda wasn't a Romani, though. She was only raised as a gypsy.
@@wesltall1 interesting.
Maureen O'Hara was wonderful in this role, and she was So Beautiful.
I prefer 1956 version with Anthony Quinn and Gina Lollobrigida.
First his eyes are brown second it's green and blue wtf
Can you imagine an actual 1930s version of hunchback or Norte dame by Disney?
There's no way that Quasimodo is based on this one :o And the colours, the planes, and I believe she is a mixture of this one + Salma Hayek's
Pai do espirito santo 🕊 da humanidade desenvolveu sua história 😊🌏...
Você que coloriu? Ficou lindo!
The part where he pours boiling water and drops rocks on the invaders gives me "Home alone" vibes.
Movie looks a lot scarier in black and white tbh
l lovd it thank you
Quasimodo really suffer
i love the 1939 ver it was the best ever made i grew up with this watching it with my grandfather before he dies of heart attack crys
Deberían colorizar lo completo. Sería algo genial, con ese ingenio.

I didn’t mean it that way ?
Would it be possible for you to raise the volume? Thank you for this it's an incredibly wonderful movie.
Very good color job. But as I watch it, it looks more like a trailer for the movie.
If planet earth is a human being, it must look like Hunchback.
Childhood ethics
Você venseu corcunda de Notre Dame 😊😅 Luciana

I didn't even know this film existed. People only talk about the 1923 version.
No, they don't. his is famous and the best version of the Hunchback. You should get around more oten.
Walt Disney taken the charters from this movie
Muito bem feito para a época...

I have searched for the colourised version for decades after seeing it on French tv once. So far no luck in obtaining it. It would be a great service if you completed this project.
