LS Engine Rebuild - Is it breaking in? Or broken? - pt 3

  • It's time to see if the "budget" LS rebuild on my LQ9 LS 6.0 Gen III engine in my 2002 Cadillac Escalade was a success or a mega-mega-fail.
    In part 1, I did an engine rebuild and everything seemed to go along swimmingly, until it lost oil pressure about 100 miles in.
    In part 2, I found out I left material in the engine that starved it for oil and spun all of the bearings, so I tried again. And again.
    In part 3, it's time to see how the break-in is going, and whether I've managed to kill another "bulletproof" LS motor!
    Part 1: • How NOT to do a budget...
    Part 2: • LS Engine Rebuild - 3 ...

    I've watches dozens of ls rebuild videos but the "lessons learned" from yours have by far been the most valuable. I really appreciate your honesty in finding and pointing out your mistakes and that you are doing this awesome work in an "every mans garage".

    All 3 of your videos should be combined and made into a major motion picture for car guys!

    I would guess it's actually part of the oil filter breaking down and going through the engine

      I hope not, I'd like to think AC Delco is making better filters than that, but who knows!

      Yeah - compare the material to the material of the inside of the oil filter. I’d also cut up the flexible part of the oil cooler lines and see if the inside of those lines are coming apart and ended up blowing up your rebuild. Jeeeezzzus misery loves company Mr Flawless!

    Are we kin? Lol watching this project build is like watching myself! Nothing ever goes to plan! Especially when I do my live streams. Love your sticker!

    Man, that's nuts there's still material in there. Can't believe you haven't lost your mind with this thing. 🙃

    I’m so glad this has worked out, good grief I was so worried that this was pancaked for a third time. I’m getting my 5.7 block, crank, rods and pistons from the engine builder tomorrow. I enjoyed your video and thanks for showing the real deal unedited and raw. Much appreciated, high from Australia!

    Would be nice to see a comparison on what you spent with all your mistakes versus having the motor done by a professional. The peace of mind IMHO is priceless.

    Glad your making more videos. Love the ls rebuild update. As long as you have good oil pressure, it will make it for your vacation.

    More stuff huh? Geez! I can't believe it 😂 I truly enjoy you sharing the trials and tribulation you're going through. Helps me focus on what to look for in my build. Keep a stiff upper lip dude 😉

    My guess is the copper is from the trunnions. I would probably use caged needle bearings for a daily driver. Im assuming the bushings are more for a race application where the oil is changed regularly with little run time, similar to an alcohol engine. I would imagine the bushings would wear quickly in a DD but i could be wrong, just an opinion.

    This series and comments are greatly appreciated, and as you’ve said this isn’t just any LS much less any 6.0.

    Here's my penny's worth. It's surely that valuable. Someone at some point stuffed a blue shop towel in a hole somewhere with good intentions. Then either forgot to pull it out or pulled it out, and a piece tore off and stayed in the hole. This might not be in the block. It could be in a head, oil pump, or in some other part that you take off and put on. When the bearings spun, this rats nest collected copper, lead, tin, and held it. Now, as it breaks up over time, it dumps that metal back into the oil along with fiber shreds.

      I think this is a very plausible theory! Now, when I find that well-meaning-but-serially-incompetent person who did that....

  • @johnbankston3967
    @johnbankston3967 6 місяців тому

    I think you did a good job cleaning in the first place. I believe the fibers came from some critters that got in there during storage before you purchased. Don't know if fibers were a nest or hair but I'm thinking it came from external sources, not you. Merry Christmas

    Send it for vacation(fingers crossed). If it's broken it would just mean rebuild number 3 sooner than later😄. Bearings looked decent though.

    If there is an oil cooler it could have some Contamination in it. Also, some of that debris could be holding open the bypass valve in the oil pump. And oil PAN.

  • @justincrasi4638
    @justincrasi4638 Рік тому +4

    didn't you put in bronze trunnion bearings? that could account for the copper content. btw, i bet you're a blast at a casino! send it!

    That really looked like oil filter material to me and the ls engines are hard on cam bearings every 6.0 cam bearing i have seen shows copper the chp-10t durabond is one of the best cam bearings. How many of the rod bearings did you check?and i would like to buy those stock pistons

    • @FlawlessPlanGarage
      @FlawlessPlanGarage  Рік тому +1

      I did use the durabond cam bearings, so we'll see! I unfortunately don't think I kept the stock flat top pistons.

    Someone stuffed an oil galley with that stuff before you bought it. Probably not as a nefarious act but to keep it from dripping at the moment. So frustrating.

    For the experiment , buy 2 of the same oil filter , keep one new on the side , install other obe run it for ?? 500 miles.
    Then cut open them both and compare them
    Im pretty sure that clogging material is coming from that...chinese stufff

    Did you replace the bar bell?

    • @stevenbelue5496
      @stevenbelue5496 5 місяців тому

      I just watched these videos and I've not heard mention of the barbell. The barbell routes oil through the filter, is it possible there's enough lint in an engine that if it doesn't get diverted through the filter it could accumulate to the proportions he found? But then again he used lint free materials the last times. Maybe without a barbell there's some weird thing going on that is circulating oil through the filter backwards and filter material is escaping the filter. I'm just brainstorming because I can't make sense of the lint buildup.
