Speaking from an aqa perspective you shouldn’t worry if you struggled on the aqa paper everyone found it hard.
@@georgebuckley284 yeah I did the AQA paper. I thought it was a fair exam but I did essay 2 and got the 15 marker completely wrong. Glad I’m not alone and now I just pray they take marks for the diagram
Got an OCR paper and both 25 markers were easy to smoke through, my god it’s like I was given a free A-A*

What I learnt from paper 1 aqa
-Don't forget evaluation after each point
-Don't forget to use quote/use context
-Answer the question explicitly, don't say something irrelevant just because it fits your strength

Thanks for the vids Dal, on that Paper 1 Hot topics you fully predicted questions on the Asda-Sainsbury merger. I was so prepared for it, it was unbelievable. Ive been a C standard student but through heavy revision the past week and binging ur vids i cant confidently say I expect to get a A, B at the very least on that paper. Thank you so much

I do AQA, these are my thoughts,
Section A went wonderfully, I personally really enjoyed the supermarkets question, I used the extracts well and drew the right diagrams.
Section B was pure nightmare fuel, I didn’t revise the price mechanism enough because I doubted if it would have come up. I wish I read the questions a bit more because I think with hindsight I would have gone for essay 3 but I kinda instantly dismissed it because it was inequality. However despite that I thought all 3 questions on section B were awfully worded, I’m sure I did better than I currently think I did but if I want to get a decent grade I need to really smash papers 2 and 3 because overall paper 1 didn’t go amazingly .
I picked essay 3 purely because I didnt know how i would write 15 marks worth on the price mechanism. Was hoping for a nice market failure one but the government failure question didnt look too appealing to me. What were your points in your 25 marker for the supermarkets question? I personally actually struggled quite a bit with that one.
@@clova1311 writing essay 3 was smart and I wish I did it.
For my supermarkets essay I wrote,
P1: Supermarkets are treating consumers well by protecting them from the high costs that would have been made apparent by the ASDA sainsburys merger
Evaluation: the missed economies of scale
P2: Treating them well as market is contestable (talking about Lidl and Aldi)
Evaluation: Missing supernormal profits and dynamic efficiency due to limit pricing objective
P3: No they are not treating them well because of the current market structure (basic kinked demand diagram)
Evaluation: cutting costs would likely mean cutting wages even further due to monopsony like employment, raising a bad reputation to consumers

Mine were: treating them well because of the contestability of Lidl and Aldi (similar to yours) and not treating them well because of risk of collusion and the effects that has. cant remember what i wrote for evaluation

@@clova1311 thank you so much! That’s very reassuring. But honestly my section B was so bad that I think I completely disregarded my progress in section A. I’m really hoping that paper 2 goes amazingly so that I can feel a bit more redeemed! ( I’m the type to let one bad exam really get into my head lol)

There was nothing on market failure or govt failure or no proper questions on oligopoly which was annoying

i did aqa and did context 2 but didn’t rlly use economic terminology well in the 15 marker but section B was rlly good. I was gonna do section B essay 2 as it was literally the spec point on government failure reworded with a question mark 😮💨 but i had no time so did essay 3 but i did shit

@@tonyn5324 it’s actually kind of scaring me how I didn’t find it difficult. Then again I never used to revise for exams and now I did…so maybe that’s why

@@rih321 OCR economist here also, I think the paper was relatively kind to us and it went well, I managed to finish pretty satisfied with about a minute left but maybe in some of the questions I didn't get to go into as much depth as I would've liked to. I think the natural monopoly question at the very beginning caught a lot of people out as it's kinda taught as a subsection and not much focus goes into it

for 10 markers i tend to do alright with two main points, just evaluate everything u can think of

what points did you lot say for the gov failure question on section B , that was rough
Talked about the pros and cons of subsidies as my first paragraph and how government failure can quite easily occur. Then explained monopoly failure and how deregulating the market can fix this. Also spoke about the cons of deregulation if it isn't imputed carefully, e.g. deregulation off financial markets in the 1970s and 80s contributing to the GFC, deregulation of a natural monopoly is wasteful and amplifies costs etc
@@cccccc9865 ah okay so you can talk about examples of gov intervention phew !! I talked about maximum prices in the housing market, large risks of gov failure there... Also I talked about state provision of merit goods such as education and how that would massively improve economic welfare on the basis of equity, which outweighs risk of gov failure and prevents market failures that occur when people resort to crime etc if they couldn't access education
@@master4755 i did the exact same thing. since the questions were so vauge i started providing examples like state provison of schools and i wasnt sure if it would get me marks or not. its good to see others did the same thing. hopefully they do count towards marks.
@@thegamingninjahd2219 I left the exam so unsure because it reminds me of a diff market failure question which was smth like whether governments should intervene or not else leave it to free market, and the mistake people made was evaluating the policies because it didn't directly answer the question
