hi kyle, ive seen on other video there is a triangle made of small squares shape, 5 level to the pyramid, each stating how many loops you have turned, can you confirm this? it is on the body next to the dial ring. thanks *if so, we can tell and go to filter grind quite easily right? ooo excited
@@nakatateoh2381 You’re correct in this. But, after using this for a few weeks I didn’t feel these dots were a viable way to measure your rotation. While I appreciate the attempt in my opinion it confused me more than helped me - often being half hidden by the adjustment ring or just simply too small to use. While I could have clarified this, I’ll be sure to do so in the larger comparison.
@@KyleRowsell this was what happened when I first received it but I realized it came incorrectly calibrated/aligned if you read the user manual it should tell you how to calibrate the grinder
The coarse grind adjustment for filter coffee problem could be alleviated by looking at the arrow that points to the current click number. It is not a solid arrow but a stack of rectangles. One row of rectangle disappears after 1 revolution, so you can quickly go to the 0 of the desired round then from there only less than a revolution to adjust. Useful switching back and forth between filter and espresso.
There are actually dots in the shape of a pyramid on the side that gets covered as you adjust the grind setting. These dots correspond to which rotation you are on. This coupled with the clesr numbering on the adjustment ring make it a breeze to have repeatable grind even while switching between espresso and pour-overs.
I'm a K Pro Dark Edition user. Its the same color and coating on the JMax. It will fade away very fast. If you bump on something it will chip off. A bit of turn of. But the adjustment is easy to use. And the hopper and deeper lining inside that sometimes got the stuck of coffee silver skin. Very annoying to take out.
I have used the JX-Pro for grinding but had two issues with it. The first is screwing the catch basket back on. It is easy to cock up the thread getting it started. The second is that it is near impossible to get a true zero on it. And finally the inner attachment to the bearings has a recess that loves to trap beans in it, requiring me to constantly shake the grinder first to be able to get the top on EVERY SINGLE USE. I'm about to receive the J-Max in a few days and can hardly wait. Easy to zero and the magnetic catch basket are wanted but the retaining cap does not have any recess. No more shaking to get all the beans ready to grind! But a comment on your video: I checked the J-Max grinding chart and it shows that for espresso the midpoint grind setting is 120 not 240 -- with 240 being for aeropress. The highest was for French Press at a midpoint of 390. And last but not least there are markings on the side of the J-Max that tells you how many times you have rotated to zero with it being easy to see what you need to get to 390 - 420 without any problems. So even if you lose count, there is a visual indicator telling you where you are on the number of rotations.
As a j max owner I would like to correct you on something, the arrow indicator shows you how many full rotations you've done by hiding one row of dots per rotation
I was about to comment the row dots, but saw your comment, I totally agreed that the row of dots was a very helpful indicator to tell us how many clicks.
I always wonder why would anyone refer to people here in the island Taiwan as Taiwanese - after all almost all of the people here, me included, are of Chinese origin. And there are indigenous people still living here. It is them who should be referred to as Taiwanse, not us. The grinder is actually Chinese, or to be more exact, Mainland China, in origin. not the island Taiwan, Province of China. Both Kingrinder and 1zpresso are made by the same manufacturer located in Guangdong, a coastal province of southeast China. That said it was engineered in Republic of China (Taiwan) though.
i bought this primarily for pour over and occasionally for espresso. when you're 3 rotations you're at 270 clicks, and the pour over range is 30 clicks or 3 numerals courser or finer from the 270 clicks. It's not really a big deal to me, but I am hoping that the increased fine production in the pour over range is very minimal.
I have bought the J-Max actually have not the problem of not knowing on which setting I am. There is a pyramid symbol on the top of the ring (will be covered from the top ring). The pyramid symbol startd from 1 piece to 5 pieces, so you will know exactly on which setting you are. For example, if the ring covers the 4 pyramid symbol you will know that you are on the setting for french press. The manual of 1Zpresso is hard to understand. The settings with the clicks are continued through the whole settings. But that is another topic. But to see on which setting one is and to get from one setting to another is easier than the JX. The grinding process of the J-Max is more aggressiv than the JX too...I thik. I had a JX, but exchanged it after a week of use for the J-Max because JX had a problem with noice from the handle. But if I remember correctly, the JX was easier at grinding. Because of that, the J-Max should be not bad at grinding for pour over and obove. Maybe you can do the experiment with grinding and see if the grind sizes are similar?
I have a JX-Pro currently and it is servicing my needs enough... for now. Personally waiting for exactly this product but with the JS burr set. The blind shaker type attachment on the K-plus would be nice for if I wanted to do some higher ratio light roast espresso/allongé-type drinks since the JS produces not enough fines for the traditional espresso profile. Perhaps a magnetic cover so I could remove the shaker catch cup and actually shake the blind shaker without risking shaking grinds back up past the burrs. I think the fine adjustment is not really a problem for filter. Instead of counting clicks like you have to with the commandante, you just have to make large twists and keep track of full rotations until you are at the rotation you need to be, then track clicks. I would rather have more potential out of a grinder and sacrifice a few seconds of twisting than to remove that flexibility to save a bit of time. Those are just my thoughts and opinions.
Recently got a J-Max, and it works great for me needs, bought it after watching a bunch of reviews including this one. I drink filter very rarely, but it works fine for filter as well, even with the higher amount of fines. According to Aramse, they could get pretty close to the taste of a Commandante brew by grinding a little coarser than you'd usually use, which probably helps to stave off some of the fines. The Commandante is still better at filter though, to be expected with its fewer fines and less focus on espresso. Espresso, though, this thing is amazing at it, as pretty much everyone who reviewed it has said.
I was dial-in this grinder with the Flair classic with pressure gauge, 160-170 it's the spot that you wanna try because 150 was clogging, and 175 have channeling, for reference: medium roast coffee 100% arábica, "Special coffee" and handcraft roasting process. By the way, truly beautiful, quality, and fantastic accessories 🤗
I just got one to use with my Flair pro for travelling. I agree on the settings - I tried around 130 first and had to throw the dose out because I couldn't get any water through. Amazingly fine grind and really consistent. Also very cool because the case is pretty much like the one with the flair and it almost looks like they were made to go together. Very happy with it.
My experience is similar, but with Bambino. 130 grind was too fine. 150 is very, very close to perfection for Medium-dark roast, perhaps a touch to fine. Amazing grinder. Coming from a kitchenaid grinder and a Porlex.
Hey Kyle, love your videos. I’ve been subbed for a while so Im glad to see your channel is getting the recognition it deserves as your production is top notch. I got a JX-Pro myself and I love it. It was an awesome upgrade from my Baratza Encore and I kinda enjoy more the process of manual grinding (and the quietness). Thank you for reviews!
I have the J Max, it arrived a few days ago. I dialled in my espresso and pour over very easily. I just took pics of the positions that I liked. No dramas. Also, I have the Niche. I’m almost finding this nicer to use than the niche. Makes great espresso on my flair pro and Linea Mini. I bought the J Max as a means to grind beans when I’m away from home, but it might just be my daily for a while.
I just ordered the jmax pro last week and quickly changed it when I heard about this one on your channel. 1zpresso made it easy for me to swap. Mainly using for espresso which is why I changed. Thx for your info. Can’t wait to get mine as jmax restocked today. Also patiently waiting for your manual grinder review.
I got a K-Plus earlier this year and couldn't be happier with it. I decided on it because of the external adjustment after trying the JX but I love the coffee I can brew it it. I've got multiple electric grinders and still use it for a lot of my filter coffee. Based on sieving tests that I've done its also got a very unimodal grind, especially for a conical burr grinder.
I think the problem with a lot of these not sold everywhere grinders are for people who aren't great at adjusting their grind size, they want a consistent number that they can dial to. A lot of coffee shop that sells coffee and gear, will give out dial settings for popular grinder such as Encore, Commandante etc. Would be very helpful if someone could make a key that give out microns of each settings and equivalence across grinders. Such as Encore 3 = 15 clicks commandante = 27 clicks 1zpresso = 4.2 Kinu = 10 Weber etc.
Looking forward to the showdown, would love to see some of the big Titan class hand grinders for comparison. FYI The J-max gives you a way to track your rotations. If you look at the top just below the grind adjustment there is a little pyramid made up of triangles in white. Each rotation hides a level, so you have an indicator of where you are. This plus the numbering should make adjustments pretty easy, and certainly not require you to count clicks.
Hey Kyle, you have to try the K6 (or K4 for espresso with titanium coated burrs) from a new brand called Kingrinder ! They just arrived in North America and for less than 200$CAD for a 48 mm burrs (same burrs than JX-Pro I think ?!?), all metal grinder with a upper ring adjustment (16 microns per click) and more, they are an unbeatable deal ! They offer an amazing built quality and easy workflow that make them compete with the well known high end manual grinders but for a fraction of the price ! Really surprising !
Great video Kyle. Looking forward to your grinder comparison. I have the K Plus and love it for filter coffee. Ease of the external adjustment ring, the magnetic hopper, and time efficiency of grinding w the larger burrs make it a pleasure to use. The last point is something new grinder shoppers should be aware of. These 47mm burr sets grind about 2x as quickly vs say a Commandante or Aergrind that have smaller burr sets.
@@KyleRowsell I own a JX-Pro and just got the J-Max. Be careful because the grinding time of the J-Max is much longer than the JX-Pro. This is also a big weak point of the J-Max.

Pared to my 1Zpresso Q2 the J-Max is a thicc boi. Jokes aside. The J-Max is as huge and heavy as its "K" sibling which i don´t like. Using my Q2 since March 2021 (thanks to your comnparison, Kyle!). I´m pretty happy with it tbh. I´m using it in the range of 24 to 120 clicks (which is insanely fine grindsetting in my eyes, grinding 14g of beans takes half an hour, lol). The J-Max seem to deliver amazing results for just 80 USD more than I paid for the Q2.
Looking forward to the hand grinder comparison video. It can be hard to differentiate between so many great options...thanks for trying to eliminate some of the guess work.
Thanks for the helpful info. I just got my J-Max two weeks ago. Love it. I don't find the number of clicks a detriment to pour-overs. I don't focus on clicks, but rather revolutions; one full turn may be hundreds of clicks, but I don't notice the clicks except for the final adjustment for espresso. 2nd there is a small gauge below the dial to identify the revolutions. This grinder is excellent. The price is fabulous.
@@fredswanepoel2425 absolutely. 1ZPRESSO provides a chart with recommended starting grinder settings ranging from Turkish coffee up through all styles of coffee, including espresso, Aeropress, French Press, etc.
Firstly, I wanted to thank you kyle for amazing video. I actually choose to buy a J pro a couple of days ago instead of J max. J max definitely looks cool as a espresso grinder but more fines it produces made me choose Jx pro. And I should say I am impressed. The user experience is phenomenal I actually enjoy using it every morning the dial on the top part is really pleasing to use but it makes the cleaning and reassemble a little bit tricky. The adjustability is 12.5 micron somewhere between Jmax and basic Jx.
I've had the k Plus for over a year probably (not using it as my main grinder thought) I never opened it up and not planning on it unless something goes wrong. Not sure why people feel they need to open grinders. Put fresh coffee in it cleans out the old coffee. Easy. Especially for a hand grinder there's not much room for retention in there.
Great video Kyle! Can’t wait for the shootout. I’ve been wanting a hand grinder for filter (already have a Eureka for espresso) and am looking forwards to your recommendation.
5:35 thank you so much for keeping that, I laughed really hard because the amount of times I have been showing off to a friend by making them coffee and then spilling the grinds is numerous
I have the JX Pro and really wanted to upgrade to the J-Max when it launched. I even recommended it to a friend. When I tried his grinder it made me forgo any thought of upgrading. I liked the external grind setting (and no, you don't need to "count hundreds of clicks", there's a pyramid-like label that solved that). But this was pretty much it. I hated the magnetic container and don't think it was designed for people with large hands. I also didn't like the numbering system that skips from 8 to 0. Nor the esthetics. The JX Pro looks better in my opinion. I would still recommend the J-Max to those who mostly need an espresso grinder and don't have large hands, but I'll keep my JX Pro.
I personally use Q2 model for filter/AP coffee, considering how labor-intensive espresso grinding is and I absolutely adore it, one of my best coffee-related purchases to date.
Great video, man! Yesterday I've posted a K Plus review and I totally agree that the K line is a good choice for espresso/Brew coffee. Keep going, man!😀🙌🏼
I got the JX-pro as my first grinder and use it with my aeropress. This has been my first dive into great coffee at home, and it’s been great. I found a good tasting grind setting easily and maintenance of the grinder is super simple.
@@kathwal14 I do 2 full turns, then 5 clicks IIRC, so it’s probably on the finer end for aeropress. Usually use light/medium roast beans. I was trying to go as fine as possible while minimizing bitterness
At last…! The past three years I’m saying that 1ZPRESSO building one of the best handgrinders in the market! I bought before 3 three years my E-Pro and never looked for something else. Anyway, great review Kyle👌🏻!
Great video Kyle. Did you find there was a noticeable difference in pourover taste between the J-max and JX-pro given that the J-max produces more fines?
Hey Kyle, a little advice please? I have the sage (breville) grinder pro, great for v60 - not good for espresso - So would you get rid of the sage & get a df64 to grind for both, or would you keep the sage for v60 and get the J-Max for espresso?
Great video, I have been looking at all these grinders recently and every video I watch leaves me more confused! I only need a hand grinder for travel purposes for both work and (hopefully one day!) holidays and although I will still mostly be doing Aeropress or pour overs, I have just picked up a Picopresso, have an X-Bar on the way and am considering a Flair or perhaps a 9Barista to allow me to find an effective way of having an espresso away from home. Have been considering these as well as Timemore X (or slim), so looking forward to your comparison video, so please hurry to get it finished!

Interesting video, good job Kyle. I'm more excited to see your review on the K-Plus and how it compares to the other hand grinders in their class and also how it differs from the JX-Pro & J-Max as a all-rounder hybrid grinder as mentioned. Thanks for the review videos, cheers!
Haven't tried the J series but k series is supposed to be best for pour over / brew and J series for espresso. K series has bigger adjustment jumps but it still makes pretty good espreso shots.
I have the 1zepressoq2 and it is super good i use it for drip coffee but i was amazed when I used it to grind turkish coffee or espresso the results was amazing but it takes a min when u use it for espresso or turkish , not suprise when u see this efficiency for its bigger sisters
What is an appropriate click number to grind espresso? The instructions with the grinder say 120 but whenever I grind it that fine, no espresso comes out of my machine. I’m using a breville bambino plus machine. Apologies for my lack of understanding. I am brand new to making espresso.
Which one would you recommend (jmax or kmax) for the following use: 70% espresso vs 30% pour over (I usually use a vario virtuoso + for my pour overs) Maybe a lil background: I have an eureka helios 80 for my espresso grinding and a vario virtuoso+ for my pour overs. But sometimes I have the urge to use other beans for espresso than that in my hopper (1kgs). That’s why for the sake of experiencing a hand grinder in my routine, I am in search for a great hand grinder: JX Pro vs JMAX vs KMAX vs C40 or something else.
I just got the J Max and boy the grinding is really difficult on my expresso roast beans! Does not grind as easy as u showed for sure. Perhaps it is the region/country beans? Appreciate your suggestion. Thank you.
Do you suggest to have two grinders to match your brewing methods? I purchased the j-max thinking I could use it for both but have finding many people say you can’t.
The range of J Max is far higher than any other of the 1zpresso grinders. It just needs to go through a lot of clicks-that may be the only problem. It can do very good brews other than eapresso- Aeropress, Pour-over, French press, even Syphon too. Just that the click-counts are higher than, say JX-pro. For instance, in JX-pro, the Aeropress/Pour-over range is 96 to 120 clicks, whereas for JMax, it is 180 to 240. JMax has the same burrs(the coating is different, and it produces slightly more fines-but that i think will be indistinguishable for most people-unless one has an amazingly gifted/trained taste perception 😊), just that the number of divisions are almost double of the JX pro. Use the JMax without worry. Good luck brewing
I was ready to pull the trigger on the pro, now I'm torn. The top adjustment should make going through clicks a more enjoyable experience than the alternative so even though it's in the hundreds I'll bet a full turn is pretty smooth but it would be interesting to see how long it takes to go from finest to coarsest on the pro vs max (including disassembly).
If you’re thinking about the pro, especially for espresso, the max is likely the better option. If you’re able to spend the extra. Though both will not disappoint
@@KyleRowsell I just won a $200 USD gift card a while back on HB, I'm putting it into a coffee purchase and I got some travel coming up so this works. Is it available in Canada yet?
@@andrewwdouglas I know Rogue Wave Coffee in Canada carries 1zpresso grinders as their official reseller. So maybe ask them if they’ll be getting it in soon?
Kyle, have you compared the TASTE of espresso from the JMax with a capable conical electric grinder.. such as the Niche Zero or lesser expensive Baratza Sette? Great review. BTW, so pro that you and Lance link each other. I. General, the coffee community is such a very welcoming place.
I'm glad they released this version if for no other reason than aethestics. The one thing that bothered me about my JX-Pro was the website on the side. A good hand grinder design should have a timeless quality and a URL is the antithesis of that. The black rubber grip also felt too rugged and industrial whereas the faux cork wood on my Q2 looked comfier but felt a bit too cheap. This new grip texture seems like a good balance. My only nitpick now is that the name 1ZPresso feels too gimmicky for a premium product. I get that it's supposed to be a Chinese pun and all (easypresso) but it looks almost like early 2000's leetspeak.
Excellent review Kyle!! One question please regarding J Max for filter coffee: what if i never brew espresso? Which means on;y filter coffee. Then i can adjust within a smaller range without multiple rotations going back & forth from espresso to filter. what do you think of this grinder for filter only? Thank you
I would focus on filter coffee for hand grinders for sure, that’s just me. The max looks so much better, no doubt an outstanding feature of adjustability. Love the video as always my guy!
I own a 1Zpresso K-Pro for all pour-over purposes which also can do espresso well (if you are willing to take the effort). The grinder is very fast and very easy to handle. To go from espresso to pour over you just turn the dial from around 3 and a little until 6 or over. Very elegant and convenient solution. You never go through a whole rotation. For me it is all I need since I only use it for espresso if I want to try some coffee, that is not in the hopper of the electric grinder... :-)
As someone trying to save money, I’ll stick with my Timemore that I got on sale for 55 dollars and wait for a new hand grinder especially since I mainly do filter, moka, or French press coffee.
Did you mean Timemore? Which model are you using correctly? I'm looking to upgrade my hario grinder and Timemore c2 is the cheapest where I live. I only make moka pot coffee so I suppose I won't need the 1zpresso models
A review on the kanso hiku would be great. I cant find a review anywhere. Has a stepless adjustment, 41 stainless steel burs and patend bearing/shaft system. Promises to be the best premium manual grinder. Just want a hands on review before i buy
Hey Kyle, great vid and timing as I'm wanting a good grinder for espresso. I was considering the Plus options in the J and K series, but now I see this Max series. Which do you think my best bet is? Also, I was curious about the claim of more fines being a good thing for espresso. I thought excessive fines led to channeling issues, giving a bad combo of over and under extraction in the same shot? Love your videos. Cheers fr Nova Scotia
I have a JX-Pro and love it, but wow the J Max is beautiful. The looks are a huge step up from previous models. With a Flair 58 on the way, I may eventually pick this up specifically for espresso, based on your opinion. The adjustment system looks great, and easier to use than the JX-Pro, and I hope they continue with these aesthetics
Hi, Kyle! Nice video. Must say all of your videos are pleasure to see. That's why I made a sub. I'm an owner of JX-pro. For just about two weeks. And I wanted to ask you if you used IZ products with the Picopresso. And your opinion on it.
Hey Kyle, is it worth getting this for a La Pavoni Europiccola? I use it on weekends, so hand grinding isn't an issue for me in terms of fatigue! I just can't justify spending 500 on the niche zero :(
I've used the JX Pro a lot with the Flair Pro and it worked great. I imagine for the Europiccola you have to grind a bit finer so that you're in between Flair Pro and a standard 58mm basket grind. If that's true, then this or the JX Pro could be a great grinder, it would take you about a minute to grind. Otherwise, since I got the Flair 58 I found hand grinding for 15g doses was awfully cumbersome and I got a Eureka Mignon Notte. The only drawback is there's ~0.5g retention (even with single dose hopper + bellows) that hangs out in the chute
Which 1zpresso grinder is best for someone on a tight budget? Looking to team with a picopresso only and won't be used too often if that helps. Cheers.
The J Max looks interesting, but if I were looking for a filter and espresso capable hand grinder, I’d consider the JX Pro. I’ve had the regular JX for a little over a year and see yours has developed the same loose rubber sleeve as mine does. It keeps moving around when grinding and it’s a bit annoying. I contacted 1zpresso and they said to clean the sleeve from oils, but it didn’t help.
I really appreciate the way you broke up the Recommendation by brew style. In your forthcoming shootout I’d super appreciate if you kept this up and even further broke out French press. Ty!
Yes, I agree, Bryan. Seems like the world has gone crazy for espresso stuff. lol (I'll have to try it...but in the meantime..) I'm a FRENCH PRESS girl...and would love to see more reviews for best consistent coarse grinds in PREMIUM MANUAL grinders.
Interesting little grinder, honestly coming from the world of the Aergrind you really get used to the 'multiple rotations' to get from one method of brewing to another. For the price it seems very interesting.
It seems this 8m adjustability is more of a thing for electric espresso, vs manual machines like Flair 58, right? Maybe JX-Pro would match to those lever machines more appropriately?? (just adjust flow rate over time?)
Aah? I just stumbled into this. How much is that grinder in the window? I have filter coffee with my javapresse. Is that the name? To many names flying around. I wrote down JX-PRO for filter coffee. Oh that was a Aeropress I have not javapresse. I have a cheap javapresse hand grinder. It's wearing out. The middle cone burr thing doesn't stay in the middle so you don't get all uniform granules. I want something that I can grip easy with my big hands. Tacky , BUT I use rubberbands on the smooth SS javapresse. I'm looking for an upgrade under $100 possibly.
What are your thoughts on the JE plus as a sole espresso grinder? I had it ordered before the J-max came out, but still not received it yet, so wondering if a swapsie might be on the cards. Great video and content as per.
JE is the only in the current line (not for long) to have 3rd party burrs. Italmil burrs are highly regarded as great options for spro in this size (Kinu M47 uses them). Whereas the J Max uses a slightly improved burr geometry from JX (with a coating as well) which should't product much different shots. That being said, the Italmil burrs do produce a fair amount of fines and it tends to be considered the king for people doing more traditional types of spro (no need to go fully Italian tho). I think if you prefer high clarity, does Rao Allongés, etc, or want to have filter coffee capabilities, the J Max is the best choice. If you don't mind a grinder to do just spro and like sweet, shorter shots, order a JE+ while they produce them.
"No real way to mark which rotation you're on"? Doesn't the J-Max have the little "pyramid of dots" at the indicator, to tell you how many turns you're on? Combined with those big numbers, while there might be a lot of turning around to switch, it should be pretty easy, no? Still, great video, and really looking forward to your comparison video, as I'm thinking of getting a hand grinder soon! :-)
Quite honestly, these were so small and hidden I didn’t find it a viable option. But this maybe a personal opinion! And I guess for some, they may choose to use this option 🙂
@@KyleRowsell Are they a bit confusing when they're half-covered, say? I could imagine those being unclear if you're not at the zero setting... At least they gave it some numbers, unlike the Comandante! ;-)
@@NJDevil15263040 didn’t miss out on. After using it for weeks I didn’t feel it was an option that was viable. It seems more like a gimmick than an actually usable feature.
Kindly note that for serious (machine) espresso Comandante is not a wise choice. That being said, the comandante does amazingly well for AP and filter coffee. However, as you also mentioned your interest in espresso and Turkish coffee I would wholeheartedly suggest JX-pro as the best all rounder or the Jmax for ultimate control on espresso Kindly note that in case you plan to use the same grinder for filter coffee, the Jmax would not give you the best flavor profile but it can certainly do the trick as well
Great video love how you let people make up their minds based on need. You hinted at K-plus being a good dual purpose grinder. I don’t want you to give away future video content but would I be disappointed with a K-plus for espresso if I were doing it 50/50 filter vs espresso?
I use it for espresso it is more than great, it has less fine and more clear cup if that is your style, however the main downside is large clicks, 1 click is 22 micron which changes the time of extraction a lot. So you might have to change the in-coffee dose
Hi Kyle! great videos! when's your comparison coming!!? 😁 Waiting for your comparison before proceeding with this one!!! Need a good espresso grinder for my upcoming Cafelat Robot!! 🎉
dude, your production quality is on point. keep it up man, super excited to see you grow 100k+ and beyond, love your videos & the shout-out to lance too!
The quick answer is yes. Using a bottomless vs standard dual portafilter has no effect on the flavor of the espresso. None. I've owned a JE-Plus (the predecessor to the J-Max) for several years now and I totally love it! I would upgrade to the J-Max but my JE-Plus is still going very well indeed so why replace it?

The coarse grind adjustment for filter coffee problem could be alleviated by looking at the arrow that points to the current click number. It is not a solid arrow but a stack of rectangles. One row of rectangle disappears after 1 revolution, so you can quickly go to the 0 of the desired round then from there only less than a revolution to adjust.

Hey! I address this in my pinned comment responses. Will talk more on this in the full video comparison.

As a half-Taiwanese, it warms my heart that Taiwan has been able to jump into this market to a global audience.
Ah love that!
I’m Taiwanese and yes! Totally warms my heart
Lot of great specialty products from Taiwan. My favorite is Timemore
@@josephhwang1428 泰摩是上海的
Any updates? How do you like the J-Max for pour overs?
Any updates!?!?!?!?!?!
Great video. Quality of 1zpresso is fantastic… I’ve been super happy with my JX Pro for my Robot and v60. God bless!
Thanks for watching!
@@KyleRowsell are you going to do a review of that red Robot in the background at some point?
Great job man, great review. Good to know I made a good decision with the JX-Pro years back when it wasn’t known yet :)
@Kyle Rowsell
Overall, for espresso only, is J-max better than comandante? Does J-max produce espresso better than comandante ?!
Do you mind sharing your expresso settings? Thx
Got the jxpro a month back for espresso on my flair and it's awesome..
Flair pro or 58?
I just ordered the jmax pro last week and quickly changed it when I heard about this one on your channel. 1zpresso made it easy for me to swap. Mainly using for espresso which is why I changed. Thx for your info. Can’t wait to get mine as jmax restocked today. Also patiently waiting for your manual grinder review.
Thanks for watching
I got a K-Plus earlier this year and couldn't be happier with it. I decided on it because of the external adjustment after trying the JX but I love the coffee I can brew it it. I've got multiple electric grinders and still use it for a lot of my filter coffee. Based on sieving tests that I've done its also got a very unimodal grind, especially for a conical burr grinder.
K plus is fantastic!
Great video Kyle! Excited for the hand grinder comparison
Excited to create it!
I’m excited to dive into it! Also, refer to my pinned comment response about this! I’m aware of the dots to measure rotations 🙂
@@KyleRowsell Thanks. I only saw that after. Would seem fairly easy to get used to in my opinion, but I understand where you are coming from
Hey Kyle, you have to try the K6 (or K4 for espresso with titanium coated burrs) from a new brand called Kingrinder !
Having the K-Pro I am very excited about the content to the K series.
Great video once again. Like the style and content. 👍🏻
Can’t wait to deliver!
Couldn’t agree more. Time to grind should be a large factor while shopping.

Q2 is another great option for budget concerned buyers. Thanks for the comment!
There's a mountain of coffee that gets shown when turning the dial. It shows which turn you're on

Looking forward to the hand grinder comparison video. It can be hard to differentiate between so many great options...thanks for trying to eliminate some of the guess work.
My pleasure. Thanks for watching!
I want to buy the Jmax for making French press coffee do you think it’s a good option?
Thanks for watching Arian! And thank you for these thoughts. Much appreciated!
GREAT VIDEO! EXTREMELY INFORMATIVE, THANK YOU SO MUCH!

5:35 thank you so much for keeping that, I laughed really hard because the amount of times I have been showing off to a friend by making them coffee and then spilling the grinds is numerous
😅
What is your usual aeropress grind setting range?
@@kathwal14 I do 2 full turns, then 5 clicks IIRC, so it’s probably on the finer end for aeropress. Usually use light/medium roast beans. I was trying to go as fine as possible while minimizing bitterness

How does this compare to the Knock Feld47?
What is an appropriate click number to grind espresso? The instructions with the grinder say 120 but whenever I grind it that fine, no espresso comes out of my machine. I’m using a breville bambino plus machine. Apologies for my lack of understanding. I am brand new to making espresso.

Maybe a lil background: I have an eureka helios 80 for my espresso grinding and a vario virtuoso+ for my pour overs. But sometimes I have the urge to use other beans for espresso than that in my hopper (1kgs). That’s why for the sake of experiencing a hand grinder in my routine, I am in search for a great hand grinder:
JX Pro vs JMAX vs KMAX vs C40 or something else.
I like how you pronounce 1zpresso the way it is intended.
It’s the only way to say it! 🙂

Should do a review among the titans of manual hand grinder for espresso:
Kinu M47/ Bplus Apollo/ J-Max/ Comandante Red clicks/ Timemore Chestnut X
All but the bplus will be in the video
Great content man. Thank you.
Excellent review Kyle!! One question please regarding J Max for filter coffee: what if i never brew espresso? Which means on;y filter coffee. Then i can adjust within a smaller range without multiple rotations going back & forth from espresso to filter. what do you think of this grinder for filter only? Thank you
Commandante : hold my nitro blade

Electric grinder : 😉🤙
I would focus on filter coffee for hand grinders for sure, that’s just me. The max looks so much better, no doubt an outstanding feature of adjustability. Love the video as always my guy!
Thanks for watching lance!
is the quality of a good Handgrinder comparable to an Electric ?
I’m torn between kmax / kplus or Jmax for mostly espresso. Please help to choose one.
I’m getting Flair Pro 2 😬
I own a 1Zpresso K-Pro for all pour-over purposes which also can do espresso well (if you are willing to take the effort). The grinder is very fast and very easy to handle. To go from espresso to pour over you just turn the dial from around 3 and a little until 6 or over. Very elegant and convenient solution. You never go through a whole rotation. For me it is all I need since I only use it for espresso if I want to try some coffee, that is not in the hopper of the electric grinder... :-)
Based on what do you make the statement that the J-max produces more fines than other grinders? I have not found that substantiated anywhere else.

The adjustment system looks great, and easier to use than the JX-Pro, and I hope they continue with these aesthetics
How is your experience JX-pro with Flair 58?
Hi, I have the Flair 58 but at the moment I don't have a grinder as precise as the J-max. I can't wait to buy it.
Had both the Max and JE. Kept the JE because of the Italian made Italmill 47mm burrs. Also not a fan of the mag cup. To easy to knock off.

Hi, Kyle!

Cheers.
JX-pro
The J Max looks interesting, but if I were looking for a filter and espresso capable hand grinder, I’d consider the JX Pro. I’ve had the regular JX for a little over a year and see yours has developed the same loose rubber sleeve as mine does. It keeps moving around when grinding and it’s a bit annoying. I contacted 1zpresso and they said to clean the sleeve from oils, but it didn’t help.
Thanks for this comment. Don’t sleep on the k-series either. It’s a big rival to the Comandante.
So, I can use this for all around/filtered coffee vs espresso only? Thx
I really appreciate the way you broke up the Recommendation by brew style. In your forthcoming shootout I’d super appreciate if you kept this up and even further broke out French press. Ty!
Thanks Bryan!
Great video Kyle, I really like that grinder, but I only use a hand grinder for pour over and Aéropress, but I really like the looks of that grinder 🤔

You're correct, I think it's a big point he totally missed out on...
@@pphaneuf you’re correct! Very confusing but yes, I’d much rather this than no number at all 🙂
Excellent content!
Thanks for watching.
i have the K model, and i was gonna strat to use it for espresso, but your video scared me for it :D
Why did this scare you away from using the k series?
J Max vs K Max. Will u be able to tell us what’s the difference?
This one, K plus or Comandante? I want te use mostly for aeropress but also for espresso and turkish coffee. Witch one is best? Thanks
Kindly note that for serious (machine) espresso Comandante is not a wise choice. That being said, the comandante does amazingly well for AP and filter coffee. However, as you also mentioned your interest in espresso and Turkish coffee I would wholeheartedly suggest JX-pro as the best all rounder or the Jmax for ultimate control on espresso
Kindly note that in case you plan to use the same grinder for filter coffee, the Jmax would not give you the best flavor profile but it can certainly do the trick as well
Great video love how you let people make up their minds based on need. You hinted at K-plus being a good dual purpose grinder. I don’t want you to give away future video content but would I be disappointed with a K-plus for espresso if I were doing it 50/50 filter vs espresso?
I don’t believe you would be disappointed
I use it for espresso it is more than great, it has less fine and more clear cup if that is your style, however the main downside is large clicks, 1 click is 22 micron which changes the time of extraction a lot. So you might have to change the in-coffee dose
Hi Kyle! great videos!
when's your comparison coming!!? 😁 Waiting for your comparison before proceeding with this one!!!
Need a good espresso grinder for my upcoming Cafelat Robot!! 🎉
? :(
dude, your production quality is on point. keep it up man, super excited to see you grow 100k+ and beyond, love your videos & the shout-out to lance too!
Thanks a ton!
does it give fine grinds that are suitable for espresso machines when using naked portafilter? thanks in advance
