    Here's some follow up information:
    1) You can tilt the grinder to make it easier to grind. This is especially helpful with lighter roasts. We haven't had the time to check how this affects the particle distribution but we'll update this space once we get around to testing this.
    2) 1ZPresso have confirmed that the build up in the threads will not cause any jamming issues. We still recommend you brush and blow out the threads after every few uses.

      Great review, and good follow up.
      I've had my J- max for a month and can confirm that two techniques I use for easier grinding have no real effect on the grind quality, not even one click needed to compensate. One method, as you mention, is tilting to reduce the bean feed rate - this really makes lighter roasts easier to grind. Tilting almost horizontal doesn't affect the grind quality either. The other technique is speed. If you crank fast enough, you grind fewer beans at a time and the torque needed is much less. I mix and match speed and tilt.
      As for retention, I'd say around 0.8g with no taps, half that in normal practice, but well under 0.1g with RDT. 1zpresso actually recommend a few drops of water shaken with the beans, which is what I do. Weigh beans in a small container, drip 4-5 drops of water on, cover with my palm and shake, before tipping into the grinder. Much of the water remains on your palm, or on the shot glass you weigh the beans in, but still makes a world of difference - basically zero retention.
      You should try the cordless screwdriver method too. 1zspresso recommend this too, and the 1/4" hex shaft is made for it, but so far I haven't felt the need, this grinder being so easy to dial for espresso..

      @@ayex86 from a UX, convenience or grind performance/taste perspective? For espresso, filter/aero or both? I don't own a Commandante but have borrowed one on occasion (a MK3 I think and without the red clix) and even after getting over the glass grinds bin (no, just no!) I find the whole experience far from satisfactory especially at the price point. The 1zpresso range, to my mind at any rate, offers equivalent grind performance packaged much more attractively and while I can't say I prefer espressos from my J-Max to the Commandante they are at least no worse.

    I've had a 1Zpresso JE-Plus for 2-1/2 years and I have zero regrets! It's been a superb grinder that has never failed me! I use it daily and it simply does its job! I make espresso shots so I grind fine for my preferred medium roast beans. As far as I can tell the JE-Plus is the predecessor to the J-Max which has some nice upgrades. I would love to upgrade but my current grinder still works good as new! I'm a big proponent on not fixing that which isn't broken so I'll keep going with my current grinder until such time as it breaks, if ever!

    The video not only included your experience with the grinder, but more importantly some usage tips and potential issues to be wary of is an absolute win in my book. This grinder has been part of my daily morning coffee for a year now, and I'm a very happy user.
    I do agree that for lighter roasts, turning the crank can sometimes be hard. I've found two tricks are helping here. Number one: use the supplied rubber band, put it as far up on the grinder body as possible, close to the adjustment ring. Number two: hold the grinder in your right hand (if you're right-handed, else reverse), the crank knob in your left, and use the motions of both arms by making the hands orbit each other.

That’s why I love the technology of using an electric screw driver to attach to the grinder. I believe it works in all of their products. Thank you for mentioning the exposed top inner thread. I used K-Plus as my daily driver for more than 2 years. Towards the end the coffee built up inside those inner thread has somewhat damaged the adjustment mechanism. It can still be used for sure, but the adjustment ring can slightly rotate between clicks. Admittedly, I don't deep clean my grinder that often (probably once every other month) but I don't see how constant cleaning could prevent that seeing that the inner thread is a pretty inaccessible spot and the lubricant makes it hard to blow it with the included blower.

    Happy to report that I've ordered one of these grinders this morning, in part based on your review. I did find it to be, as you say "actionable content". I just haven't seen many other grinders with a grind setting that can be so easily repeatably indexed. The settings are even easily shared, as you could go onto a community forum and ask what setting people like to use for a particular brew method or even a specific machine, and get answers back in the #-#-# format that you can reproduce. That along with the ease of breakdown and an accessory pack that costs extra for the JX-pro, 1Zpresso's other darling grinder. It just seems like a real all around winner.

      @ylleKkcirtaPnadnerB 3 роки тому +4

      1zpeesso only say avoid water for cleaning. Sure, too much water would be trapped and would be a bad idea. But RDT beans do not leave the grinder moist.
      1zpresso actually recommend a few drops water on the beans - see their FAQ

    • @221b-l3t
      @221b-l3t 2 роки тому

      @@ylleKkcirtaPnadnerB If it can handle the humidity of Taiwan it should be able to handle RDT, that's only about 0.1g of water (I RDT on the scale) so on 20g that's 0.5% humidity on top of what's in the beans, which should be like 10%. So RDT is negligable.

      @aramse  3 роки тому +6

      Well the Comandante is a stellar grinder and still sits at the top when you look purely at the results in the cup. If you primarily do filter or other brewed coffee and the occasional espresso then definitely get the Comandante. If you do a lot of espresso, you'd still be happy with the results in the cup but the workflow and grind time can get quite frustrating and this is where the J-Max shines.

    This is my first coffee grinder, and it, alongside Reddit caused me some confusion. I THINK I have figured out why.
    When the grinder is zero'd, there is 1 block on the little pyramid showing - not zero blocks. So if you set to, say '5' on the first rotation, that's 50 clicks, with 1 block showing.
    This means on the second circuit, when set to '5', you have done 140 clicks (90 in a ring, not 100), and there are 2 blocks showing, not 1.
    I suspect that sometimes, when people are talking about the settings for the grinder on Reddit, they might describe this setting as '250', because there are 2 blocks showing, and you are on the '5'.
    At first, I was making pour over at the setting that most people recommend, which was 270. So I looked up 270 on the 1zpresso chart, and this is shown as 3 full rotations (90 clicks per rotation) - which means 4 blocks visible (remember - 1 block is visible at the 0-0 setting, 2 show after 1 rotation, 3 show after two rotations, so after 3 rotations, four blocks are showing). So I had it set at the '0' register with 4 blocks showing - 270 clicks!
    I tried this and the V60 drained very quickly, the whole brew of 300ml taking less than 1 minute. Obviously the coffee was incredibly sour and under extracted.
    Instead, based on the assumption I made above, that by saying '270', people meant 2 blocks showing (only 1 rotation to get there), and pointing at the 7 - this is actually 160 clicks, instead of 270!
    The coffee I got from this was delicious. Very well extracted and well balanced, and the V60 took just over 3 minutes to drain fully.
    The fact that there are 90 clicks per rotation, and that 1 block is showing on the zeroth rotation really caused me some confusion!

    Absolutely great review! (Subscribed!) Just recently bought the J-Max to use with my Gaggia Factory 106 "Tin Man" (essentially a rebadged La Pavoni Millennium lever espresso machine) and my new Picopresso. Among the many things I like about the J-Max is that the diameter of its magnetic bin is sized just right for the 51mm baskets of both the "Tin Man" and Picopresso. So, after grinding to fill the bin with ~18 grams of ground beans, I can just remove the bin from the J-Max, set the bin on the countertop, position either the Tin Man's or Picopresso's empty basket upside down centered over the open top of the bin (the bin's magnets help in positioning the basket), and while holding both the bin and basket together (again, the bin's magnets help in doing this, though I still do have to hold them together), I can just flip the pair over, gently tap the now-on-bottom underside of the basket on the counter top, remove the now upside-down bin from on top of the basket - and all the grounds are now nicely and neatly in the basket, ready for final distribution and tamping. Among its many other attributes, the J-Max is the perfect grinder for a 51mm basket size espresso machine!

    Love the J Max, I've been using it every day for a few months now. The magnetic cup attachment is really nice, and the super precise, repeatable grind settings make it easy to dial in. I only wish it had a longer handle, the lighter roast beans can be pretty tough.

    I kinda liked the K plus model and got it over the JX pro just because I liked how it was skinnier in the middle (the part you grip) vs the bottom and top, I thought it looked better that way. With grinders like the Commandante it's hard to grip if it's too wide. But that grip size is probably the same with the J series and K series most likely, or close to it anyway, not as fat as the Commandante.
    The addtional lip on this model is a nice touch. I've accidentally knocked the catch cup off on the K plus model, because it rubbed on my body or something while grinding and not really paying attention to how I was holding it.
    One flaw / down side of the K plus is there's a bunch of retention (or static?) so instead of all the grinds falling into the cup about 1g might stick to the top where the burrs are, it's obvious to see and can brush out but it's an extra step and a bit messy so not ideal. But not as bad as retention with electric grinders where there's coffee stuck in the burrs and chutes etc that you might not even be able to see or get to.

    A few days ago I purchased the J-Max to pair with my Flair 58. (both are due to arrive in a week or two).
    What would be the best setting to start with for medium-dark and lighter roasts? I would be using the normal low flow basket that the F58 comes with. As this would be my first grinder and machine of any kind, I really don't have an idea of how big of a difference really 1 click makes. Any tips on how to get/where to get started on this grinder would be very welcome! Thank you

    Great video! I'm new to espresso and coffee so doing a lot of research on grinders. Having a bit of a tough time justifying spending 2x what I spent for my basic DeLonghi machine for a grinder - but as everyone has said the grind is most important. So at some point I'm going to have to just trust that or go the cheap route and wonder what may have been,

    • @aramse
      @aramse  3 роки тому +6

      It is a lot of money and we went back and forth several times years ago when we were faced with the same choice. We even bought a cheap grinder, returned it and then got a Comandante. Best coffee purchase we've made till date! :) If it helps, there are people who use a $3000 grinder like the EG-1 with a $7 plastic V60. Your DeLonghi uses a cheap pump to add hot water to the coffee but your grinder is what makes of breaks that brew. We always tell people to spend like 90%+ of their budget on a grinder, it really is that important. :)

      Hey thank you. We haven't tried the K-Plus yet but have heard great things about it from people we trust. The JMAX is an excellent all rounder that really excels at espresso and the K-Plus is an excellent all rounder that excels at pourover. It can definitely do espresso but the larger clicks means it'll be harder to dial in. There is a price difference, so depending on your budget and what you value more between pourover and espresso you should be able to pick between the two.

      Hey there, so if we had to pick purely based on taste and nothing else then we'd pick the Comandante which just has a tad more clarity and tends to highlight individual flavours a little better. Honestly this looks tempting to finally upgrade my Hario Slim after about 8 years, which is performing surprisingly well with my Cafelat Robot with a locking nut modification but definitely grinds very slowly (about 2-4 minutes for a single shot depending on how fine I need, how light the roast, and how fast I fatigue).
    I was ultimately planning to get something like a Niche but I honestly like the 100% manual workflow and the smaller footprint and I only make 2 espressos a day typically. Would love to hear how it compares in grind quality to some of those decent electric grinders because this looks fast enough to make the occasional extra espresso if I have company without breaking the bank too much

    • @LastAphelion
      @LastAphelion 3 роки тому +3

      Oh please do yourself a favor and try something like an 1zpresso, I used to use Harios before I had any idea that there were better tasting and easier things to use. In hindsight the lack of stabilizer in Hario gave me a grind consistency not much better than a spice grinder. I would buy the JX-Pro again in a heartbeat, 30 grams in ~30 seconds for filter grind without a sweat, or 18g medium to dark beans in ~60 secs with not much work for espresso grind. Light beans will always be work but tilting on the side for slow feed makes it ten times easier, and it will feel 100 times butterier to use over the Hario due to the metal teeth and quality bearings. I have heard from many users who own multiple grinders that the taste of Niche is indistinguishable from the JX-Pro or other models. It sounds like you will only find taste differences versus more expensive flat burrs.

    • @aramse
      @aramse  3 роки тому +2

      We love the manual workflow too and switching from the Slim, be prepared to have your mind blown! Haha. You can't go wrong with either the JX-PRO or the J-Max for 2 to 4 shots a day. The Niche is great but it is over double the price, has a larger footprint, needs electricity and is a LOT harder to get a hold of. :)

    • @auralistank
      @auralistank 3 роки тому

      @@LastAphelion not that it's relevant to you anymore but for those on an extreme budget you can definitely hack more stability into the Hario with a little tape around the inner shaft and the fixed burr. That plus the nyloc nut have given me decent consistency at a given grind setting but it's not easily repeatable when switching between settings aside from knowing that 1/4 turn of a socket wrench is about the same as a single click on the original nut.
