I don't think A/C relay "knows" if you are low on refrigerant. It simply sends electric current to the A/C clutch. That's all it does. Another component called "the refrigerant pressure switch" can prevent clutch from engaging if you are low on refrigerant. It would have to be bypassed in order to charge the system. That is the real "chicken and the egg" situation....
Thank you very much, now I can check to make sure the spacing is correct (my refrigerant must me low so I couldn’t engage the clutch by turning the a/c on). The new clutch engages and disengages as it should when I manually bypass it as you showed.
On a lot of cars the A/C pressure switch is on top of the A/C receiver-drier (vertically mounted cylinder often in front of the A/C condenser/radiator). It'd be safer to pop the switch off & bridge that than the relay (not to mention you can still control the A/C with your dash while the car is running).

So for me, my thermostat only reads temperature some of the time. Currently waiting for a couple day block to replace the thermostat myself. I do also believe some of the wiring is bad. When my temp does not read in my 09 cobalt, the ac does not work. When it does read temp, the ac works.
You don’t need to do this. You can just find a similar relay fuse on the panel and move it to the AC position. I moved my horn fuse relay to the AC position and got it cranking again. Then go buy a new fuse when you’re done.
Will the refrigerant go in without the compressor on AND when it gets to the right pressure will the compressor start......what if the system is depleted of all refrigerant and you are just putting on a new compressor? Will running the compressor without any refrigerant ruin it?
What happens when you try to fill without the clutch engaging? I realized after watching the video that the clutch was not engaging but was able to fill? Is it a thing that the system can be charged but there is an issue due to the clutch not engaged when filling?
So I've got a question on that. You jump the relay like that with the vehicle off correct and then as soon as you turn it on it should make it engage but you will not hear any kind of click as soon as you insert that paper clip with the vehicle off correct?
What I'll do is I'll take for example the windshield wiper relay normally they are the same relay I'll take out the relay and put it in the AC relay as long as the numbers match they are the same relay then turn on the AC and see if the AC clutch comes on or not if that relay is working on the windshield wipers for example then it will work on the AC clutch so I just take one that's exactly the same number see where it goes and I will swap out the relays and see if the relay is good
Youve probably figured this out long ago but once you jump the clutch you need to check your refrigerant level, if its low add the right amount. Once you have the right amount of refrigerant, plug the relay back in. If it still wont come on, use the paperclip again and see if it blows cold. If it does replace relay or try another similar relay in your car that you know works
What does it mean if this doesn't work...ac clutch spins freely by hand so it isnt seized up...checked relay box has power...but clutch still won't engage

@@jamesebola1250 you’re wrong dude. It’s not because the relay is bad- the PCM only provides ground to allow the relay to close, thereby completing the circuit and engaging the clutch on the compressor. Because the pressure is So LOW, the conditions required by the PCM aren’t satisfied, and so it will not allow the functions required to add r134- that’s the “chicken/egg” reference at the beginning of the vid…the relay is Typically just fine…so now YOU know as well.
I did what u said and it worked but once i take the jumper off and put a new relay in the clutch won’t engage on its own what could be the problem. Refrigerant levels are good just clutch won’t engage
One or both of the 2 pressure sensors (high side and low side) could either be defective or have a bad connection. First thing to try is the wiggle test - with the engine running and a/c compressor switch turned on on the dash, temp set for very cool air, relay in place, fuse verified as being good(replace if any question, extras are usually in the fuse box somewhere), carefully figure out a way to gently wiggle the wires going to those switches, one switch at a time, and then the whole A/C harness, without endangering your hand by getting it near moving and/or hot parts of the engine, and see if at any point the compressor comes on. If so, fix the wiring problem.
I have the same problem, new dryer, ac compressor, power going to try e compressor, low sensor works, but when I cross over the relay the clutch still won’t engage, any thoughts? I’m stumped at this point
Does the key have to be on "on" position or on "running" position to get this test right ... i have the key on off position and there is no sound or clutch engaging
What if there's no spark or anything when testing because I tested my horn and there was a spark and my horn sounded but when I tested my AC clutch there was no spark or clutch engagement.?
Ok Sooooooooo what do I do now that this didn't work? 😂.. Any ideas on what to look at next, clutch spins freely so I know it's not seized.. Checked all the fuses, has refrigerant..low pressure switch maybe?
Hello there, I have a ford explorer car from 2010, when I turn on the A/C the clutch is not working, when I remove the relay as what you said the clutch works just fine. I checked up on the lines and nothing was in a problematic order. However, I got to discover that the negative line that turns on the relay is the one that gets lossed when the A/C is turned on while the relay is on its place and when I connect a negative line directly to the battery to the relay it can work just fine so I connected it directly but the clutch works always.i would keep that for granted if I got a reply on my question. Greetings.
This works because it is the pcm or ecm (your car’s computer) that would normally provide ground to the relay, completing the circuit. The computer will only do this after verifying certain conditions are met by reading voltages provided by the various sensors. If satisfied, ground is provided electronically, the relay closes, and …you know the rest. This procedure should be done ONLY to get your system to accept the r134, and IMMEDIATELY restored to its original configuration, with the relay in place. If the relay is bad, swap with another like the horn relay until you get another one. Typically there are many of the same relays used in a vehicle. Just be sure to get things back to the intended order before something is destroyed- being that your post is a month old, I hope it’s not too late…
check refrigerant levels when compressor is jumped. could be low refrigerant. The compressor clutch wont run even if the relay is good if there is not enough refrigerant
Just add refrigerant until the low pressure switch is satisfied and the compressor will safely start. No bypassing of the compressor protection is warranted to charge a system with low refrigerant . No harm done if enough refrigerant is added before compressor damage occurs.
could be neither, if the refrigerant is low enough the compressor will not engage. this method will allow you to check refrigerant levels and add more if needed

Anything else to check for if ac fails after battery replace? Btw. I can connect 12v to the compressor clutch side of relay to force voltge there if need be, right?
So for me, my thermostat only reads temperature some of the time. Currently waiting for a couple day block to replace the thermostat myself. I do also believe some of the wiring is bad. When my temp does not read in my 09 cobalt, the ac does not work. When it does read temp, the ac works.
How do you tell its the right one? I'm not sure witch one to pull out and look at 98 f150 no ac but the cluck isn't moving
You don’t need to do this. You can just find a similar relay fuse on the panel and move it to the AC position. I moved my horn fuse relay to the AC position and got it cranking again.
Then go buy a new fuse when you’re done.
Once ya add freon the low switch does it's thing an turns on AC compressor broooooo
Not always, bro...
@@da324 Then you got another problem not just low freon bro
Exactly... I keep asking myself why people don't make things simple
needs a module lol
Will the refrigerant go in without the compressor on AND when it gets to the right pressure will the compressor start......what if the system is depleted of all refrigerant and you are just putting on a new compressor? Will running the compressor without any refrigerant ruin it?
I did this with copper wire, do you think it can last longer? Or affect performance? Im planning to use this method permanently
Worked for my 2006 Kia Sportage. Thanks :)
What number would be on the relay for a 2014 Volkswagen Passat TDI air compressor clutch? And where would it be?
Thank you Sr this video really helped me to fix my ac problem
You just saved me $,$$.$$ thanks so much!!!
What I'll do is I'll take for example the windshield wiper relay normally they are the same relay I'll take out the relay and put it in the AC relay as long as the numbers match they are the same relay then turn on the AC and see if the AC clutch comes on or not if that relay is working on the windshield wipers for example then it will work on the AC clutch so I just take one that's exactly the same number see where it goes and I will swap out the relays and see if the relay is good
This guy sounds a little like Woody Allen. Good video.
His analyst agrees haha
You are money saver .. work perfect 👌🏿 thank you so much 😊
It worked for me but when I replaced the relay the clutch doesnt engage? Is this the relay that may be broken?
Youve probably figured this out long ago but once you jump the clutch you need to check your refrigerant level, if its low add the right amount. Once you have the right amount of refrigerant, plug the relay back in. If it still wont come on, use the paperclip again and see if it blows cold. If it does replace relay or try another similar relay in your car that you know works
The button on the inside of my van isn't working, can i use this method to bypass the button using wires running in to the cabin?
What does it mean if this doesn't work...ac clutch spins freely by hand so it isnt seized up...checked relay box has power...but clutch still won't engage
Did you figure it out?
After my car sat for a while and i finally got it to a mechanic to fix the alternator i got it back with nothing but hot air blowing. My ac used to be AMAZING. Hubs says the ac compressor clutch thingy isnt doing its thing. He got the can to refill it b4 he knew this and the damn pressure was TOO HIGH. csn he just let it all out and redo it or should i get a new fuse. I need a new car
wow cant believe it was a dam fuse. I changed everything and it was a fuse. I always check fuses lol.
tl;dr Use paperclip to jumper pins 30+87 in your relay box while engine off. Done!
Sir after that, will the clutch compressor function? Do i need to buy a new relay?
@@seanmhar123 Yes! If relay was good you would have no need to bypass it in the first place.
@@jamesebola1250 mine starts then stops repeatably lol does that mean mine is going bad ? ( Trying to recharge ac )
@@lexlino6744 It sounds you are low on refrigerant. As you add more it will cycle less frequently.
Did you need a new fuse/relay ? , is it safe to leave it like that?
Should the car be on while you do this or do you do this paper clip then turn the car on ?
Did you ever figure this out ? I’m having s ame problem
I'm having same issue
Well?
Learn how to do something on your own. Whiner.
Thanks for the tip. I could not figure it out until I watched your vid. Thanks again.
Mine was 5 and 3 diagonal jump.
You can also disconnect your battery and reconnect it.
da324 the negative terminal ?
How do I identify the AC compressor relay on a 2007 Prius? Looked on the black cover map thing and can't tell which one it is
Same here
Thank you! I'm going to try this.
I have the same problem, new dryer, ac compressor, power going to try e compressor, low sensor works, but when I cross over the relay the clutch still won’t engage, any thoughts? I’m stumped at this point
Any updates?
Does the key have to be on "on" position or on "running" position to get this test right ... i have the key on off position and there is no sound or clutch engaging
Well of course😅
Lmao i was looking up "ac bypass" and it just so happens i have the same car so super helpful lol but mine is a type-s :P
Same here. U figure it out?
Updates Shaun b?
What does it mean when it works when I jump it and it doesn't when I put the relay on ? The relay is bad? Also when I jump it the lines get frozen ice
check refrigerant levels when compressor is jumped. could be low refrigerant.
If this works does that mean there is an issue with the relay or fuse?
could be neither, if the refrigerant is low enough the compressor will not engage. this method will allow you to check refrigerant levels and add more if needed
It worked in my car clutch turn on and my a/ was blowing cold...But after putting the relay back on it does not come on at all.....Can anyone give me info on this? Think I have a wireing problem.
Replace the relay. About $10-15 dollars for Honda Element
I replace it with other relays in my car and still no play but when I jrump 87 & 30 comes right on??? Any other thing ot can be?

I’m having this same problem currently
I have a 2005 Pontiac Grand Am. Refrigerant level is good has no leaks. Put a new AC Compressor but still don't have Cold air. AC Compressor doesn't active. What can I check??
Relay and fuses.
Check voltage at the plug should be 12v. With the key on of course.
Tried this compressor kicks on, everytime I turn ac on but still no cold air ?
When the compressor is on you need to check the refrigerant level. Extremely low levels of refrigerant will cause the clutch to not turn on.
Thank you very much sincerely. Saved me a lot of time and money.
Did this after a recharge didn’t work and my AC worked for 60 seconds before all the Freon exploded out! Blown compressor for sure ($$$) but at least now I know what the problem is
It happened the same to me 5 min ago.. can u please tell me if your compressor ended up blowing ?? PLEASE 🙏
@@marianolosaviodiaz5688 any updates? There are articles online that state not to do this..
??
It worked when I 1st did the bypass but now my ac compressor clutch don't work at all. Idk what happen. When I touch the 2 connections nothing happens.
Can I keep the paperclip on there? or will it harm my car? I took it off and put a relay but it wont turn on
By jumping the relay can you still turn the ac compressor on and off in the cabin manually like normal without having to remove the paperclip? Or will it just stay on all the time?
Stay on all the time until paper clip is removed
My ac clutch relay has no diagram? All those prong/ connector things are all parallel or all in each corner...
How do I find out which prong is what?
Most of the time there is a SNOWFLAKE on the AC RELAY. It international I guess. Notice at the 30-second mark here, he POINTS and the SNOWFLAKE DIAGRAM and calls it an AC PRESSURE CLUTCH RELAY....it's just the Snowflake.
What do I do if I don't have a compressor clutch/Ac relay? 2016 dodge journey.
I did that but compressor did not engage. So bad compressor?
I have a kia Sportage 2014! In the mornings whenI start my car and the a/c the compressor clutch wont kick in. After I run the car for about 10 minutes or so the compressor kicks in! Pls advise!
Check refigerant levels, its probably low
What does it mean if clutch still does not engage?
Do I turn on my car on and leave it running with the paper clip in place while I charge the AC?
Yes, when you get a reading in the green you can shut the car off replace the relay and see if it works as normal. The clutch wont run if the engine is not running.
Does my ac have to be on full blast when doing this or no?
That was a great help
What is usefull of this process ??
My clutch kicks in only when bypass..replaced the relay fuse and still nothing..does this mean my compressor is bad. I recently had my manifolds replaced and my ac was working just fine prior.
Your pressure switch is bad.
Hi buddy would i see pwr @ the ac comp plug if my ac system has no gas in it at all.
Nope. No power is gonna show up at the compressor plug if the system is empty. sorry for this super old comment, just thought it might help someone else someday
Hi, a few weeks ago I was changing my alternator and because the AC Hose was in the way of a bolt I open it and leaked out my refrigerant. I bought some refill and tried topping it up but the compressor won’t turn on even when I tried jumping it. Can you help? I have a Honda Accord 05.
Did you put a vacuum on the system first
Desire2punish91 No I did not.

How do I do the relay jumper on an 87 Chevy Caprice
Will this work with 2016 civic
Yes, mine is a honda too.
Thank you.
Ok i jumped mine nothing aint clicking at all? Spins by hand wont engage at 87 and 30 on relay
time to take it in to someone who has specialized tools to run a few more tests.
so, i was able to get the a/c clutch to spin with the paper clip and then get an accurate reading on the a/c pro freon can. however, there's still no air blowing (or heat) in the car - any idea? I assume it's something major. 2013 impreza
bad fan perhaps? does the fan spin?
@@PurpaFur took it into the shop a while ago, it was something electronic burning out the fan in the glove compartment or whatever that is connector or something. he showed it to me charred. they had replaced it first but then that burned out right away, told me it was a common impreza issue.
I have warm air blowing thru vents. My AC clutch on accord 2009 won’t engage. I replaced relay with the horn relay and still not engaging AC clutch. I also replaced the fuse with spare fuse provided with cover. Still AC clutch not engaging...compressor not spinning with AC turned on. So will this jumper work or maybe I need to buy a new relay switch? Or do I just have a more serious problem .
