This is a wonderful video. I am here to absolutely validate all those thoughts and feelings. You hit on so many important aspects in this one. We need to feel great in ourselves. It changes one's life to integrate in this way. I love the cozy winter glow theme; it is so you! I appreciate your thought processes. The shirt/topper would be great to start with because you said you wore one every day when visiting your mom. It's a nice gift to give yourself in the new year. xo
Yes to this, Bri!! Sewing is such a powerful tool. It isn't cute, it's badass. Dreaming up, constructing and creating something for yourself and nobody else is not sweet. It's empowering! Thank you for always saying the things that many of us are thinking. Your capsule looks wintery delightful! I'm totally copying your button up tee idea. Watch this space.
Thank you for sharing Bri 💞 Being able to sew your own clothes is life changing. It means you can have clothes in fabrics that YOU want, styles that YOU love and garments that fit you better than any shop bought items ever will. It’s a skill that you have spent many hours learning and improving on , that gives you joy and a happy bubble to escape to. Sewing has saved my sanity and given me some much needed confidence over the past few years. It’s the only hobby that I haven’t gotten bored with. People who tell you that sewing your own clothes is “cute” obviously haven’t discovered the joy that comes with having that skill 🤷🏼♀️ 😂 Have a great day Bri 💞💞
Thank you so much for sharing. You’ve certainly made this 72 year old think more about her clothes and style and simply why do I wear things, what is my lifestyle, what do I feel good in? I always get inspiration from your videos, this one is no exception. Helen x❤
Thank you for your honesty and vulnerability. Th healing you are engaged in is an active example for your daughter. Be proud and keep shining brightly. ❤
I LOVE when you create these videos. Your color choices are always amazing especially for Fall/Winter. I completely agree with you. When I make the effort to wear clothing that I love and my hair is done I feel like I can conquer the world. When I’m not dressed in a way that flatters my body, I feel awful all day. Really great video.
Thank you for being vulnerable with the realizations you had while going through the design your wardrobe process. It’s amazing how much impact clothing and our relationship to it has on so many aspects of our lives! I live in a cold and snowy climate, so my December sewing focus is on cozy but luxurious loungewear, including wide leg pants and funnel neck top from a viscose sweater knit, a colourful maxi dress in a light sweatshirt fleece, and a puff-sleeve sweatshirt and matching bottoms. One thing that might help with making your first button-down shirt out of viscose is to try using either some Best Press or gelatin to stabilize the fabric and make it less shifty. Also, there are multiple ways to sew a fly, just as there are multiple ways to sew the sleeve placket on a shirt. Take a look at several methods and don’t be afraid to use the method that makes the most sense to you, even if it’s different than your pattern suggests.
Hi Bri. You have the greatest ideas! - and now we have an insight into how that comes about, in more ways than one. It isn’t easy to explain the past and how it affects who we are. I have a past with very low self esteem and in my 60s I’m trying to find the real me through my dressmaking! Hearing you putting it into words was very affirming. Thank you! Karen, UK 😊
Tatb has a really good video for zip flies. Kept me right, which speaks volumes 😅 love your plans, can’t wait to see them come to life. ❤and amazing video, so true how making our own clothes can heal x
I love your approach of what to look forward to in the season. The dark night and snowy days can feel so long for me. Thank you for sharing that. I’ve made up a blouse out of the Lise Tailor print and it’s such a nice fabric to wear. It’s holiday and festive without being themed, and it gets a good amount of wear throughout the whole season. It also washes and dries amazingly which is always a bonus.
Ugh, the dark, right? I totally agree about the fabric - festive, but not costumey. I just hope I can finish in time for the holidays! (Otherwise, I guess it can be a Valentine's Dress 😜)
Have you read Husbands & Lovers? At the end of the book the main character talks about the art of crafting and how dismissive society makes it to be, but she describes it as an honor to be able to make and share a piece that is actually used in everyday life. The community that comes from that is something to be proud of and should be celebrated just as much as fine arts. It literally made me cry because it truly validated my own feelings. Going through art school was never as fulfilling as what I’ve been able to do in my own home. Thanks for sharing ❤
@@what_valerie_makes That sounds beautiful. Adding it to my TBR! I agree that practical craft and fine art are different (👋🏻 theatre and classical music major here!) and both deserve celebration!
Thanks for sharing...I KNOW exactly what you're talking about. Been there, done that, felt that... Being dismissed in High school teenage years.... Trigger I was 5'8" in grade 6/7 with size 10 shoes. I was the tallest and skinniest all through high school. I hated it. I was the wall flower at school dance and the last to be picked on gym class pairing off for teams. I was hassled to play basketball by teachers (I hated it, can't run, dribble and see where I'm going at the same time) if that wasn't bad enough there was high jumping on sports day. I broke my wrist and this only helped in screwing up my already boring lonely summer with no swimming or trampoline (the only two sports I really enjoyed) To this day (68) I rarely wear dresses... The waist is never where it should be. I think I have one in my closet with the tag still on it. Purchased sun dress that's at least 10 yrs old. I sewed one once but because I never wear them, it felt alien to me. My 16yr old gson diagnosed me with ADHD .... he has it and sees it in my "quirks". So that explains alot for sure.
I really like your fabric and patterns. Thanks for sharing your insight and contemplation. I will often wonder and sit with my feelings about sewing. While I’m not skilled in fashion or really that excited about fashion, sewing calms and lifts up my spirit. I find it a gift in the ways you have described. Love this video and your channel!
For a zip fly if you hand base things before sewing it comes out much nicer. If you do the basting for the final top stitching you will have a line to follow and if you sew slowly and carefully it can be much more accurate.
Thank you for sharing. Your plans are beautiful. Such a lovely theme and colour palette. I absolutely understand why clothing and sewing your own clothes is so important as a way of claiming your body and self-expression. Looking forward to seeing your makes.
33:04 I am cutting patterns while watching my favourite sewing videos. My goal is to sew 3 pant toiles (Dani, Sculthorpe, and Chandler) this weekend, no modifications, and then choose one of them to make all the necessary adjustments.
Super plans! I've got the Isle ready to sew too. My advice would be to do a practice a fly if you can bear it. It's just step by step. Also look at a RTW fly so you understand the parts! The Byrdie is my favourite shirt and shirtdress pattern it's a goodie, there's no yoke which means it's a simpler make. I'm with you on being the most me in my memades. What I sew supports me in whatever I'm doing. Sewing brings healing and self connection.
Love your plans, fabric and inspiration! You can totally make the Isle jeans.. the fly construction is different than some more traditional jeans but overall pretty doable. I did use the instructions and the blog/tutorial side by side but overall, it makes a clean fly. You got this!!!
I love a long video from you! I take sewing clothes for my body seriously. RTW options are so limited for me and how I want to dress. The ability to have inside/outside congruency feels so good to me. At the moment I am prepping to sew a Toaster Sweater in a very cosy cotton fleece. I do have a pair of Adam's pants cut out too but already suspect I haven't quite got the fit right. Oh well, live and learn.
Congruency is so important! That Toaster Sweater sounds so nice! Hopefully you can ake some on the fly adjustments for the Adams pants. They look so cool!
This short was helpful to me for sewing a fly. ua-cam.com/users/shorts8PQMTO_2KnQ Also I learned after my two first pairs of trousers that you should never try them on before attaching the waistband because it will distort them and that explained why the waistbands didn't fit and I had to cut new ones.
I have a larger bust and a continually changing body. It’s a challenge to find good patterns. I’m currently working on building a wardrobe. I’ve heard of the mood board and the process that you’re using. I think I’m going to try it and see if it’s helpful. Also there are so many false messages in the religious world made up by man. The only true messages are from the Bible when man doesn’t tamper with them.
I found that the Sandra Betzina zip fly tutorial via Threads finally made zip fly insertion make sense for me. ua-cam.com/video/jkFQ3J-9Tr4/v-deo.htmlsi=BbqPQt7mmgYm2xBC I'd suggest doing one in your toile first because a) it really helps when assessing the fit, and b) it makes you feel more confident to have worked through it first before trying it on your denim. If you're steadfastly against sewing a toile, even just a practice go on scrap fabric will help yo feel like you can totally do it. Which you can! I also have some denim that's been sitting around for a couple of years waiting to be made into a new pair of jeans, because perfectionism, but I'm absolutely going to make a new pair this winter!
I, too, am a huge fan of stretch fabrics. I hardly ever wear anything that doesn't have some give in it. :-)
