  • A fun and easy lesson on how to play the stop-time harmonica riffs that bluesman Lazy Lester is playing in the Geico commercial. With Adam Gussow of Modern Blues Harmonica.

Here's the ad this lesson is based on:
    • Video
The stop-time riff that Lazy Lester is playing is an old and familiar vamp in the world of blues harmonica. It's the vamp for "I'm a Man" and, in a slightly different version, "Hoochie Coochie Man."

R.I.P. Lazy. I remember the first time I heard "I Hear You Knockin'" all those years ago, and it just stuck in my head forever after that.
Every time I see you sitting on the porch, it reminds of my parents' porch where I often sit, relax, and harp out when I come up to visit. I try not to annoy their neighbors, but I don't always succeed.

Thank you Adam!. Lazy Lester was an under appreciated musician and song writer. Glad he had an opportunity for some recognition! RIP August 22, 2018.

I was playing this walking up the street when a random guy walked up behind me and as he was passing me told me “not bad” for playing only for about 2 weeks i took it as a compliment

Don't just learn from me! I learned from other guys, including the records of James Cotton, Sonny Terry, Big Walter, and Carey Bell, and of course my mentor Nat Riddles, in person...

Adam, I've learned sooomuch from your videos. You're the best teacher out there and really break down the little things that make the difference. Your personality is another reason why I keep coming back. Also jammin on the front porch wearing sandals and your little call and answer part makes me giggle, mostly cause I'm getting the hang of it and you just make me feel like you're right there with me every time. Love you and your work Bro. Thanks for everthying you do.

Awesome as always Mr. Gussow! Between the two sections and going along with the beat.I like to play 123 chord with a chuck , 3 blow back to 123 chord.

True, Lazy Lester deserves a view. I personally prefer the crispier sound from your harp, more depth and atmosphere.
The riff is easy but to my ears liking, I need slight bending and dirt up to the neck, that's how i play it anywas =).
Hmmm, maybe I put it up...
I have to put a thanks and credits to Adam. If you found your way here, subscribe!
Like we say in Sweden, this channel It's like a "smorgasbord" with great stuff.

I'm not sure if it's because my c harmonica is simply not worked on enough by me to allow it to bend the way I need to or it's me. Because when I use a a harmonica or a g harmonica especially the g I have no problem at all bending any note I need to. Any advice thank you

Practice a lot. Learn things from a lot of different players--including UA-cam teachers. See good blues harmonica players up close, at concerts and club dates. Ask lots of questions. Notice small things you're doing wrong and try to improve them, one at a time. Rinse and repeat.....

Yes, but why not do it like this.....Uh 4 and uh 1, draw chord, blow chord, blow chord, draw chord?

    • @gussowsclassicbluesharmoni2726

Because the harp is setting up a vocal line that never appears in the song, and because the singing is framed relative to the first beat of the bar. You may have no idea what I'm talking about, but those who know--and sing--will get it.

@@gussowsclassicbluesharmoni2726 Thanks. I knew that. What the Hell was I thinking, gotta stay out of the singer's way.
The lick is basically Heartbreak Hotel and Bad to the Bone.

I like that harmony sound just to spice it up in a very informal atmosphere!
