My Rainbow Shark is not happy about the new SAE I added to the tank. There's lots of aggression going on.

Since the rainbow/redtail shark population has declined in my tank over the last few months, my large rainbow shark has turned his attention toward my roseline sharks and sometimes even my big bala sharks. Luckily it’s just a dash and retreat when they enter a certain part of the tank

I guess every rainbow shark has their own personality. Mine I had a tank alone just for him. He is passive, timid, friendly, gentle but curious (like a lab dog) and my pleco would be annoyed by his friendliness and decide to attack my r.shark. sadly. I had to remove my pleco. Both stayed in separate tanks. 🤣 but my r.shark is the best. He would greet me by swimming back and forth and around his fish feeding bowl to let me know he is hungry.. and would always clean my fingers when I feed him some blood worms. And when he is full, he would take a nap 🥰

Definitely love the shark variety. I currently have a rainbow shark & redtail shark in my 100gal. The really interesting thing is that no real aggression has ever happened besides the occasional chase, but the redtail shark did torment my bigger silver SAE to where it was just exhausted and I moved it to another tank. 👍

  • @BloodOfTheDraco

I think its cause the tank isn’t bustling with activity so the rainbow shark can chase the SAEs with ease since most of your fish tends to hang out near one side of the tank so most of the water column is very open.
If you had more active fish to use as dithers such as torpedo/denison barbs, that tends to help including that blocked lined of sight but if the activity level tends to be on the lower level side, it allows the rainbow sharks chase them rather than being distracted.
I used to keep multiple rainbow sharks, red tails and albino rainbow sharks together at one point. It works since they just squabbled amongst themselves. Would used to leave my Siamese Algae Eaters and other fish along in that higher number. Since you only have just one, that’s a different story.
Behaviour always changes drastically depending on how many you keep, dither fish/activity level and the way the tank is aquascaped.

I’ve also kept redtail sharks and rainbow sharks in groups a few times and I noticed that they hardly pay any attention to the other species and only have their attention on each other if anything. But whenever I just keep one, they terrorize all of the community fish.

Good luck to you

How densely planted is your tank and how big is it? Does he have his own cave? I’m thinking of perhaps adding a rainbow shark to my (75g) tank. Also, does he have any smaller tank mates he’s peaceful with or is it just big fish?

4 years ago I had a brood of around 150 Kribensis fry (around 3 weeks old, was the 3rd generation bred from this pair), introduced a 3 and half inch Rainbow Shark and it was the single-handed biggest mistake I ever made with my aquarium. My alpha Kribensis (large nearly 5 inch Male father) got fed up the first night after the Rainbow Shark took out around 60 - 100 of the Kribensis brood throughout the first hour, and ended up zipping at a speed in which I never observed from the right side of the tank towards the left side of the tank, pinning the Rainbow Shark against the glass momentarily, and then proceeded to ground pound / pummel the Rainbow Shark for around a minute until the Rainbow Shark lost consciousness. The Rainbow Shark was out of commision with multiple lacerations and a completely broken spine and vertebrae in various locations. I took him out, he was bent like a noodle. I didn't think he was gonna last the night, let a lone make it alive into the morning (which the little bastage did). The Aquarium store I have been a customer towards for 2 decades wanted to pin the Nitrate amount within my tank as the main pertinent issue at hand rather than the employee who insisted on the Rainbow Shark being 100% peaceful and would not be an issue (against my own instinct and better judgement of course), which absolutely made me furious considering how much effort and care I put into my tank. I was well aware of the risks involved with any type of Freshwater Sharks, but this one was pushed upon me under false pretense with regards to completely invalid information.
Lesson = To listen to your gut instinct when deciding which fish to introduce into your aquarium. It was not a fun experience to endure. After this incident my alpha male Kribensis rightfully received the name as "Orca", or the Shark Killer.

Should've had the other fishes first for awhile like months in the tank then put the rainbow in there. I didn't have this kind of problem. To sum it up, community fish first in the aquarium then after a few months the rainbow shark.

I had an albino one in my 125g and he tormented my gold nugget pleco. I woke up to the albino rainbow shark having a huge gash in his face to the point he couldn't eat or breathe right. I think his aggressive behavior made it so he got stabbed by the driftwood sticks in my 125g aquascape. I got a regular rainbowshark to replace the albino an now he's really good an freinds with the pleco. He chases the rainbows out of his territory sometimes but it's real quick an then done mainly during or around feedings.

Everything you said lines up with what I've learned and experienced over the years, and it's such a bummer when it happens. Early in my fish keeping, I kept 3 Lg Tiger and 1 Albino Oscar, 1 Md.Convict cichlids, 3 Lg Jack dempsey., 2 Green terror, and several 4-6in Reg. and Butterfly koi, and medium pleco all together in a 55 gal. With 2 Lg penguin bio-wheels, 1 powerhead with filter and air mixing tube attached. The only thing that made any sense was the heater and air pump because we're all stuffed into my first apartment, which happened to be a studio efficiency apartment. The fish and I we're mutually unhappy with the confines of our living. The hundreds of feeder guppies I kept in the 30-gallon had it worse! Lol! 4 Oscar's and 1 Pleco. I purchased/ planned for, and the rest were pawned off onto me by 2 older brothers after they tired of fish keeping. With 2 decades of experience with fish keeping, I find it especially unbelievable that all of those got along just fine for 9 months or so until I could improve our living situation. Look, I guess the point of this long wind story is, yeah, it's a bummer when fish that 85% of the time would normally get along perfectly together don't. when I'm borderline about putting certain fish together. More often than not, they don't end up getting along. I must have hit some sort of fish lottery back then. For those of you who enjoyed this and would like to hear the story of my 1st aquarium. Pm me lol. And I'll tell you about a young boy and his 10-gallon saltwater adventure.

Every fish has their personality. I have a female red tail that I've had for years and about a year ago I added 3 SAEs and I've never seen anything like this. But I do see my red tail going after my tiger barbs sometimes, usually during feeding.
From the looks, yours is also female. Hard to see through video but you can tell by the dorsal fin. Males come to a point where females are rounded. Similar to gouramis. Females are usually considered less aggressive but obviously not the case here if yours is indeed a lady.
Definitely worth the hassle for such cool fish though

It may be that if the SAEs had been in the tank first, it would have been alright. I have always been told that rainbow and redtail sharks should always be the last fish you put on the tank as they don't like newcomers, particularly other bottom dwellers. It will be interesting to see if it gives your synodontis any trouble, once it comes out of hiding. Maybe you could try removing the shark temporarily, rearranging your tank and reintroducing it after about a week so that it will think its entering a new environment?
