- About the GloFish Shark
The GloFish Shark is the genetically modified version of the rainbow shark, also known as the red finned shark, and even with the new coloration of the body, they still seem to retain their bright red fins.
These fish are very popular in the aquarium trade and are considered to be quite hardy, but can be difficult to keep, as they are the largest of the GloFish getting up to 6 inches in size, and they can be very territorial towards other fish. But with the right care and set up these fish can live as long as 8 years.
Tank Set Up
Because of their territorial nature and high energy, the minimum tank size recommended for keeping just one of these fish is a 50 gallon long.
If you wish to keep more than 1 the recommended size is 125 gallons for them to peacefully coexist. That being said, the bigger the tank, the better. GloFish sharks are much more likely to become aggressive if they are kept in too small of a tank.
You will also want to give these fish plenty of hiding spaces using plants and decorations, and they prefer to have a sandy substrate. Because they are used to fast moving waters, you will also want to invest in a good filter with higher flow.
These fish are used to warmer waters, so you may or may not need to use a heater as the temperature range for them is between 75°-81°F. They also prefer soft to fairly hard neutral waters with a pH between 6.5-7.5.
Tank Mates
Choose top or mid dwelling species that can defend themselves if needed. These fish are typically seen kept with species such as barbs, danios, gouramis, and rainbowfish.
Diet
Rainbow sharks are omnivores and primarily bottom feeders. They will readily accept high quality sinking pellet foods and algae wafers. These fish also love feeding on brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia.
While they will feed on some algae in your tank it is also a good idea to feed them some vegetables such as blanched zucchini, cucumber, or spinach.
Breeding
Rainbow sharks are an egg laying species and are often considered to be difficult to breed in the aquarium, due to their territorial nature, it can be difficult to keep multiple rainbows in the same tank.
It can also be difficult to tell male and female sharks apart until they reach maturity, or around 4 inches in size. Male rainbow sharks will have thinner bodies than females along with black lines along the tailfins. Males also tend to be more vibrant in color.
But as with all GloFish species though, there is a patent on them, so while you may attempt to breed them in your home aquarium, you cannot legally sell them.

“Welcome to jail mate, what’re in for?” Me:Selling glofish
There is definitely a GloShark in one of those 2.5 gallons somewhere lol
Do you think it matters if I have a 5 gallon.? I’m new to this fish thing
@@tikyciamatos4850 The fish will get bigger. I’d say you should get a 20 ga.
@@tikyciamatos4850 This fish will grow to be about 6-8 inches and is highly territorial as an adult. 55 gallons should be the smallest tank considered, imo. Maybe a little smaller if it's going to be kept alone. Definitely not a fish for a small tank.
@@pigeonfowl474 so I can’t have glofish shark in a 20 gallon community Glofish tank?
@@gatsbietheweirdo9403 I mean not a 20 gallon high a long would be better and don’t have any fish except for a few ig I recommend the minimum 29 with a few fish that’s what I’ve done albino rainbow
Thank you I just got a 55 galloner today with one fish in mind glofish sharks
I have two glofish sharks in my 20 gallon tank, now you are scaring me with that tank size recommendation
Can’t wait for my electric blue gloshark to grow up
Great video. I bet almost everyone that purchases this fish does not understand the tank size requirements. Great job with the info!
Thank you! I think these fish worry me the most out of all the GloFish because they need such a large set up and are so attractive to beginners.
@@thenerdyfishgirl HELLO BEAUTIFUL, CAN I HAVE YOUR WHATSAPP NUMBER ? 🙄... PLEASE I WANNA HAVE A WORD WITH YOU
@@thenerdyfishgirl Hey i just purchased a 29 gallon would that be suitable for a shark
@@benkane3165 29 gallons is fine for a small baby, but it will need to be upgraded to at least a 55 gallon as it grows.
Yup Petco did not tell me what is the recommended tank size inspite of telling them i have a 20 gallon and i went ahead and bought 3 of them, they do chase each other around but co exist, planning to give 2 of them away to friends to be adopted in their tanks.
Great info with no fluff. I love it. Got yourself another sub :) Keep up the good work.
I've got three of them in a 20tall all are around 5in they have been in this tank with 4 corry cats for over a year and they seem to be happy and early chase eachother
Dumb
Crazy at my pet smart they keep them with the glo cat fish aka corydory cat fish
I never heard that we are not aloud to sell babies, I am in Canada so maybe the laws are different. I also heard that the babies would be normal color but now I know. Thank you
The problem with selling them is that you have to apply to the GloFish company to be an authorized dealer or distributor, otherwise they could take legal action against you. When they breed, if you only allowed them to breed red with red, green with green etc., they should retain their color. 😀
Sell something and throw in a free fish as a gift. Muahaha!
🤣
The glofish company only sells male glofish tiger barbs, so pet stores and people can't breed them. I wonder if they make their other fish sterile too, also so no one else can breed them.
I feel like I never see my rainbow shark eating anything besides the algae on his claimed cave 😅 seen him eat a flake once or twice but he ignores bloodworms and wafers. Do you have any tips/tricks for feeding your shark?
Mine was picky as well, keep trying different bottom feeder food that is good quality.
new content please.. gender of common fishes :) thanks for being such an inspiration
I have one in my 75 gallon
Hi I am new to glofish I never fully realized they loved vegies my tank comes next week
I need a guide for this cause those are a lot of thing I don’t know for a fish pet I want to own
When I was picking up fish food I was looking for some schooling fish, so I got danio glo fish. The lady was freaking out at me because I was putting them in with my male half moon Betta fish who’s been living peacefully with my colored shrimp. She even proceeded to speak Spanish in front of me to her coworker and I speak Spanish. She was saying that I’m feeding the betta these fish >.> yeah I’m spending 7$ a piece for my betta to eat it. I got lucky and my betta is very calm unless he sees a bright reflection of himself in the glass he huffs and puffs at himself. So I turned the lighting down and he is calm as hell. So far him some glofish danios and 2 yellow and 2 cherry shrimp coexist and he sometimes swims with them. The danios are probably my favorite other than the shrimp, because I’ve watched the danios use the water flow as a slide and go back repeatedly to have fun. I’ve also seen one cherry shrimp doing the same and a yellow shrimp just sitting under the stream like a shower haha. Such playful little mates and I’m so happy they all get along. I need to get a few more danios, but I was nervous about adding them to the tank so I got 3 to test and I’ll get another 4 or 5 in another week or 2 as long as everything keeps going smoothly. I’ve learned a lot about glofish from you and I’m glad someone’s doing it because the recommendations from glofish doesn’t seem accurate. Either way, glad my ecosystem of plants and fish is doing well and that I haven’t encountered any horrible deaths yet. Once I get the last of the danios I’ll get a few more shrimp to help with algae and because I like them alot. Thanks for the info
I might be getting a ornate Pacman frog after this corona virus thing blows over and this is my first non bird or mammal animal so I could use health tips care tips and cleaning tips hope you answer
I’ve noticed that my rainbow shark sits at the bottom and stays there all night then during the day my fish starts swimming
Ugh I just got mine and it sits in the little house in the tank 24/7 and won’t even come out to eat. I don’t want it to die, what should I do?
so i have a gloshark for 2-3 years now in a 30 gallon tank. wanted to get a bristlenose algea eater. will there be problems?
A bristlenose pleco shouldn't be a problem as long as there are plenty of hiding spots to prevent any potential territorial aggression.
Argh at the possibility of only having One fish in my tank for 8 years!!!! cuz it has killed every other fish in the tank. Well, now I know why. Thanks for the info. I was looking for a good fish food for it though. Any recommendations from an online store? I've been using
Cobalt Aquatics Color Flake as the only food source.
Beautiful beautiful creatures. Sub and liked
I just got a new glo shark and I believe he is attacking my smaller fish the other one hasn't touched my smaller ones
on the glofish website it says they are smaller than rainbow sharks even tho they are?? is that true or are they just trying to make it easier to sell?
If we have a 125 gallon tank, how many would you recommend we have? We plan on also having the barbs in there with them.
I recommend you start with one or two, and maybe get a third one if they get along or if you don't have very many other fish
Good video, thanks
for the info. (:
Thx my glofish are still teens but thay will be sharks so thx
150 gallon 😮 don't think I can have them then the biggest I have atm is a 20 long but really wanna get a 75 or 80 to 90 gallon
I own a 35 gallon tank long and host four of them in the tank. I have no problem with any aggressiveness. But they are territorial over their hiding spots. Like I said I also have a lot of holes and hiding places they can stay. Definitely use a sandy bottom for them and the filter flow does not really need to be to high but aerators really help. So if you have a 20 long I would say at most 2 of them they do get bigger though. So make sure their hiding spots they can grow into. Even one is perfectly fine.
When I got my sunburst orange shark, we put SpongeBob's pineapple in there and now he claims it as his home. He chases the other fish if they get near it, But doesn't care if the other shark is in there.
I have a 30 gallon established glow tank with six barbs in it. I’ve had the tank going for about seven or eight months. Every time my add glo fish shark it dies overnight. Any ideas?
Bigger tank
On the Glofish site they say 20 gallons will do .I just bought one for my 20 gallon tanks!What....?
I had a glofish rainbow shark in a 20 gallon long. When he was a baby, it seemed the perfect size. But he grew fast. When he was about 3-4 inches, he started swimming back and forth angrily like he was claustrophobic. So I got him a 40 gallon tank. And he kept growing, and by several months he was 5 inches, and thick and strong. He's my biggest fish.
I currently have three in a 20 gallon along with 6 other glow fish and they all co-exist just fine. As they grow I will get a bigger tank. Idk what she means by a 50 gallon tank.
Nice video,
Help this is urgent!!! I have this fish and having flashing issue.. and its like every second he is flashing throgh substrate or decrations.. please suggest any solution for this please
update?
@@WA-ge3vz he is still flashing but not so much.. i saw a dot over other angel fish so started treatment with Super ick cure.. every 2nd day I update 50% water with required dose of the treatment.. kept the 32 temperature using thermostate with heater.. added airStones too.. its 10th day.. so added charcoal and and updated water 25% as the medicine instruction says .. so hopefully now nature will fix the remaining flashing..
I just got two sharks and they are always next to each other is that supposed to happen
They're relatively social when young, but will become territorial and antisocial as adults. Unless you have a huge tank, you should be prepared to separate them as they grow up.
I went to petsmart today and asked if I could keep a glofish shark and a tetra in a 5 gallon tank together...and they said that was fine. And now I come to find out you need a 50 gallon just for one shark? Wtf?
I know. Mixed messages. This seems to be the only source saying 50 gallon minimum though. Most places I look say 20 minimum. Also, I think she meant 1 shark and other fish too, not just the 1 fish in the aquarium.
Mine is beautiful, but its very aggro & I am not sure Ill be able to keep it, who can afford 50gallon for one fish, I know, its my mistake, not the fish got to get it in a separate tank. I have a 20 gallon tall, with double filtration, tons decor, like 25 glofish, Danios, Long & short fin tetras & The tank boss is definitely the Shark, it owns the entire tank, not just the bottom…. so cool 😎 though…
I have 2 in a 10gallon and now i feel so bad cuz even tho I tried to reasearch them I didn’t find that 1 needs to be in a 50gallon long. My 2 get along really well but i just feel so bad now
how have they been?
@@cristianicy1978 they’ve been good, but they died with a recent heatwave
@@jezzy5452 im sorry
@@cristianicy1978 its okay
Hi, I have a question can you keep a green tree frog with a crested gecko?
Question how many danios can fit in a 5 gallon
50 gallon minimum??? I guess I wont be buying one then. I am willing to bet there is almost no actual glosharks in a tank over 20 gallons. When you have a 50 gallon tank, you go for better options.
That’s cap u can keep one in a ten gallon the common rule for fish is an inch per gallon
Thank u I was like 50 gallons?? I could bl put a real shark in that
these 'GloFish' are absolutely terrible. I don't care what ANYONE says. Great video though, I'm trying to just know a little more about these 'GloFish'
❤️ hi our videos x❤️
❤️Sorry I meant to say I love your videos x🤣❤️
Thank you! 😀
A patent lol
You Lie glow sharks are very aggressive to all fish my rose color glow shark is a loner
Our Gloshark is a loner lol we didn't know he would need that big of a tank, we have a 20gal with him and two Tetras but he has plenty of hides and literally just hides all day. Doesn't nip the Tetras or anything. Has alot of energy when the blacklight is off tho
Are you a single woman
Please don't buy any glo fish or glo fish products. Consumers unite against genetically modified breeding practices.
Yes to Glo fish. No to the products 😭
Well if you dont buy them the pet stores will just " rid " them - let them die for more shipments. We just don't buy their branded products
Why ? All others fish are genetically altered for looks and all else Nd your food you live in a genetically modified world so get over it and they aren’t being harmed by gene splicing so :p
Dogs are genetically altered.
