Now, I know you're younger but back in the '70s and '80's the South were notorious for their southern pride. "The South shall rise again" was just a slogan for that region. Just like the "Don't mess with Texas" bumper stickers I saw growing up in the 1980s. Not hate just a sense of pride of being from a particular area of America. Similar to how I feel about growing up in Southern California, the beach, palm trees, Hollywood, Tommy's burgers, Disneyland, etc.

You forgot Queen, Kiss, and Steve Miller Band------Great list. Now do 80's rock forward with the likes of U2, Motley, Nirvana RHCP. Hint, Pearl Jam outside of debut album is s#it tier. Enjoyed this.
Those are some strong words about Pearl Jam! I will ardently defend the first three Pearl Jam albums as if my life depends on it. I even speak positively of Yield (brave I know)
Deep Purple is definitely worth checking out. They are one of my favourites! So many great albums and they are still going (the have new music out now!).
I would add Burn to your list. That album. Burn is not as great as In Rock, Machine Head, and the great live album, Made in Japan. But it still kicks ass. The fact a Classic Rock fan has never heard at least one of those albums is a shame. At least he likes the genre, which is very cool.
My parents were mostly 80s so they were a bit surprised when I slowly started sliding backwards until i listened to all of it from the 80s to the 50s. I also dabble into music in general dating back to the 10s and 20s.
Not gonna lie, kinda sad Ratt wasn't on the list. They aren't one of the best bands by any means, but Wanted Man by Ratt is a big jam. My dad was into a ton of classic rock and played a lot of songs on the guitar to wake us up as kids in the morning. I'm sure you wouldn't rank Ratt very high, but I'm super interested to know your thoughts! You're placement of Journey is so accurate. I wasn't too into Glee, but now I can't listen to Don't Stop Believin' without slamming skip. (I wish people liked Wheel in the Sky, Who's Crying Now, and Ask the Lonely more, but it's fiiiiine.) I also got to see Heart live and they're so good. (I'd say I'm sad Poison wasn't on the tier list, but well. It's Poison. I'll jam out Live to them, but I won't actively play them.) I love Guns 'n' Roses on the completely bias basis that I share a birthday with Slash. I'd put them at A tier, but B tier is so fair.
This is the first good tier list I've seen. The Beatles being at the top of S tier is 100% correct. The only one in S tier I don't agree with is CCR. Rush, Boston and Supertramp are S tier for me. The Who and Lynyrd Skynyrd are A tier. Also where the hell are King Crimson, Jethro Tull, Yes and Kansas LMAO
Fun list. Cheers. You're not alone in referencing lyrics barely at all for your assessments. That seems pretty common nowadays. As a songwriter and poet, I treasure lyrics, which is why I revere Bruce Springsteen and Neil Young. With Neil, I like the whole package of songs, arrangement, playing, voice. With Bruce, I like the songs, but don't often like his arrangements or his performances of them.
I can definitely recognize the songwriting prowess of both Springsteen and Neil Young, but I think they're just two writers that slip through my cracks. I can't eat it up for breakfast, lunch and dinner like I can for Bob Dylan or even Warren Zevon to an extent
Not a big Night Ranger guy but I recognize their place I suppose. I can see them getting little kids in the '80s into rock and roll but those kids quickly moving on to other bands. You crawl with Night Ranger. You toddle with Winger. And you learn to walk with Van Halen. C tier.

It has no skips imo and the fact they were able to make that with no existing discography is just amazing.
Sara off of tusk, landslide and Rhiannon off of their self titled, amazing songs by Fleetwood Mac (as a gen z) also the thing you said about the police is also true for Fleetwood Mac. Some of the band members were dating and then broke up and hated each other
Oddly enough I actually did cry when EVH died. I remember I was sitting at my computer when I read the news and I yelled "Eddie Van Halen died!" and started crying. I immediately regretted it because my wife came over to see what the problem was, and I was trying to desperately hide the fact that I was crying over the death of a musician.
Dude, for someone as knowledgeable in music as you are it's a crime you don't know Deep Purple. Amazing band, with a very impressive catalogue that spans over 50 years. Their 70s work alone is enough to give them S tier imo.
Bad Company should 100000% be A tier. But Free on the other hand, are top of the top. Sorry but the Beatles could never touch the raw power of Tons of Sobs or Fire and Water. Just two of the most perfect albums (Also I’m not a Free fanboy or anything, they’re just a super solid band)
From what I’ve heard of Foreigner I quite like them but I’ve only heard their debut, I have no idea if they turned to shit or not after that. Deep Purple and King Crimson are my favourites. Yes, Thin Lizzy and UFO kick ass too.
Downgrading a band because they are "overplayed" makes no sense. If you think journey is an average band, who is overplayed, say so. Another under appreciated guitar player, Neil Shon. And, the who B? Not a chance. S. And the who are not one of my favorite bands. It's your list, so I understand personal bias is included. Its impossible to rank them. But, the who are one of those influencial bands that should be rated at the top....too harsh on def Leppard, for their longevity and popularity. And, they have a few albums of very good music.
I'll defend the journey placement by saying B tier on the classic rock list is better than S tier on the butt rock list. And I've really been rethinking my placement of the who thanks to you and a lot of other people who have braved my goofy video.
@@JerryBees your opinion is yours, no issue with that, at all. As I said, extremely difficult to rate one band above another, when a band has become so popular. At age 57, for me, the two most influential and diverse bands are the Beatles and Led Zeppelin. So much great music from the 60s and early 70s. Many of these great musicians will tell you there greatest influence came from the blues, and some jazz.. ....and classical music. Kirk Hammond is one who will tell you his playing reflects classical influence. Anyway, Beatles n Zep, for me. And, as I got older Pink Floyd really made their mark on me. Incredible music and sound ....🙂. Fun topic. Ty.

The Dead are on the same level if not higher than the ABB. The issue with The Dead is that most classic rock radio stations don’t play their music that often. My theory is that radio didn’t want to push The Dead that hard because it could lead to loss of listenership due to listeners falling into a abyss of live bootlegs and/or leaving town to follow the band around the country. Since Jer checked out radio programmers would avoid The Dead to again avoid listeners going to bootlegs or finding GD adjacent jambands like Phish, SCI, or WSP that aren’t on classic rock radio playlists.
I got three words for you when it comes to The Beach Boys: The Wrecking Crew. That great famous bass line from Good Vibrations wasn't played by them, it was played by a woman name Carol Kaye. They were lifted from mediocrity many times by The Wrecking Crew.
im guessing it's because of that crazy rant he went on where he basically just called the audience the n-word a bunch of times, (alongside a ton of slurs i've never even heard of) and then said any foreigners in the audience should leave because they shouldn't be there.
I agree, Alice Cooper does have sort of a Judy-Garland-on-Broadway esthetic that doesn't work sometimes. But to me, the best Alice Cooper album gets zero attention and zero airplay. And that's "From The Inside." I was in a mental hospital when I first heard it and of course I could relate to it times a thousand. Listen to the song "The Quiet Room". Totally amazing. Most people only know School's Out or Teenage Frankenstein.
Seeger ahead of Springsteen? NO! Mellencamp & The Cars F Tier. Fleetwood Mac songs not on Rumours: Rhiannon, Over My Head, Oh Well, Sisters of The Moon, Big Love, Sarah, Tusk, You Say You Love Me, Spare Me A Little, Tusk, Bare Trees, Sentimental Lady, The Ghost. ...The Who are WAY better than ZZ Top or Tom Petty. Only the Stones and The Beatles have made four consecutive albums that rank with Tommy, Live At Leeds, Who's Next and Quadrophenia. Your Mileage May Vary
You're not wrong about everything. You're just wrong about too much to be liked. But I understand negative opinions get views. And what's with the music playing in the background? Juvenile and annoying, not the playful tone you are going for.
Meddle is amazing, but it’s definitely not better than the wall. The problem with meddle is that at its core, there’s only two songs that really stand out from the rest, “one of these days” and “echoes” I love the whole thing, but the wall has so much more to it, it’s got at least 5 songs that stand out, “another brick in the wall pt w” “young lust” “hey you” “comfortably numb” and “run like hell” not to mention some other songs that go underrated “one of my turns” “in the flesh?” “Empty spaces” and “another brick in the wall pt 1” I understand though, meddle does sound more like their overall catalog than the wall does, making it more desirable to someone who loves that sound
"Made in Japan" is considered the best live metal show ever..Deep Purple were each great musicians and in SoCal in the early 70s were part of the Zep/Sabbath/DeepPurple holy trinity. Even Prog Rockers (ELP/Yes/Pink Floyd) respected their musicianship.
Definitely check out Machinehead by deep Purple, every song on that thing is probably all amongst deep purples best and is also the album with smoke on the water and Highway star but also has some other just as worthwhile songs on it. Also check out burn as well or atleast the song Burn. And child in time is certainly a classic as well.
I thought this was a video about music. Clapton might be bat shit crazy, but Cream is one of the best classic rock bands ever. There are a lot of questionable characters on this list. I respect your opinions, but I disagree with many of these rankings. Thanks for taking the time to make it.
So you put Cream so low just because you have a personal beef with Clapton? Sheer ignorance. What they achieved in just 2 years as a band is astounding and to just disregard Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker like that is shockingly disrespectful. Together they were three of the tightest, greatest musicans this world has ever seen and to put them so low and Black Sabbath and the Beach Boys (who only have one great album) in S tier just shows you dont know what the fuck you're talking about.
Everyone sleeps on the Bob Welch era of Fleetwood Mac. I could list 25 songs from Bob's FM and Paris albums and his solo albums and Bob would look pretty great.
Wrong guy. That was one of the founding members, guitarist Jeremy Spencer. He left the band and joined a Christian cult called Children of God. Fleetwood Mac had earlier lost their idolized Blues guitarist and founding member, Peter Green. Bob Welch was brought on to replace Jeremy Spencer and add another element as a singer songwriter. Bob played on the next 5 albums. He was critical in their transition from a Blues Rock band to a Pop Rock band. He wrote many songs including two minor hits, Hypnotized and Sentimental Lady which kept the band going. Bob brought more Pop, Rock and Jazz influences into the band. He and Christine McVie eventually became the two main writers. I think Bob's presence challenged her grow as a songwriter, because Bob was probably the best songwriter that she had worked with so far. She got even better after Bob left and the Buckingham/Nicks era began. If I were to include both Bob's direct and his indirect effects on the band, I could make a very strong argument that Bob Welch was one of the most important members in the history of FM. Without Bob, the Buckingham/Nicks era and subsequent super stardom quite simply never happens, period.
You really need to listen to the rest of the purples catalog. Pretty much Everything from their debut album with the original lead singer Rod Evans and bass player Nick Simper is amazing. I would recommend listening to the rest of Machine Head it’s a great album, made in Japan is also one of the best live rock albums of all time, deep purple in rock in my opinion is a classic rock masterpiece, burn is also an incredible album. And also I would put Eric Clapton at least an A but I get why some people don’t like him. I agree with most of your video though and your journey for me is insanely overplayed and Glee kind of ruined a lot of their stuff for me. Because of God I hate that fucking show.
Early Def Leppard is classic (first three records). Also, definitely check out more Deep Purple. Styx is definitely not strip club music and also (some) of your generation needs to stop being offended by everything (e.g. Skynyrd). It's called history.
Ok so what is classic rock? is it just rock from the 60s-80s, or is it just any type of old rock because if thats the case then yes nirvana and pearl jam are classic rock
The Band, The Kinks, War, Procol Harum, Steely Dan, Devo, XTC, Three Dog Night, Jethro Tull, The Faces, The Sweet, Grand Funk, Badfinger, Cheap Trick and, for a little pop fun, The Turtles and The Monkees.
Whaaaaaat. Who is B tier? Best bassist in rock n roll history, top 5 rock drummer… Townshend is one of the greatest song writers ever and is a solid guitarist and Daltrey was a vocal powerhouse when he was young….. how are they not S tier?😭
Why do you hate on hair metal so much? I get maybe it's not your thing, but its undeniable that some hair metal bands have huge influences on pop culture
I don’t believe that Meddle can be compared to the big four. I do love echoes and belive it to be one of their greatest songs but the live version on Pompeii is better anyways. It is more of a compilation of songs rather than a concept album like their most popular. And personally I do not even like the rest of the songs on the album. I believe that The Wall was their greatest concept album when you know the meaning behind the songs. Animals is my second and there is not a single actual song on that album that is bad
Music is such a subjective topic. I think the only thing most music fans agree on is that The Beatles were the best rock/pop band in history. The real battle is for the #2 slot. For me, that would be Van Halen. I love both the Roth albums and the Sammy albums.
Here's the deal: 99+ % of classic rock lovers will disagree with at least a sizeable chunk of these rankings. With that said, those same people would probably not reject a playlist that includes ALL those great artists and 99+ % of the people who would complain about these rankings probably don't have the testicular fortitude to make a video and put it out there on UA-cam for potential ridicule by the world. Do I agree with all these rankings? Of course not... ...but KUDOS for a great (and mostly accurate) attempt!

Blue oyster cult still puts out some great music. for fleetwood mac as great as Rumors is i actually really love the bob welch era which is so underrated. yes meddle is an awesome pink floyd album mostly for the beginning and end tracks but i always enjoyed the middle of it as well. i like styx but my favorite song from them that not many people talk about is castle walls from grand illusion album.
Listen to Deep Purple's 'Perfect Strangers' album and then rank them A tier
Queensryche happened after Heart and before Grunge. Operation Mindcrime may be the best prog story album ever made.
Queensryche has been on my list for a while. May this comment be inspiration for me to finally check it out more
@@JerryBees I recently listened to Queensryche full albums for the first time and they were amazing
I even speak positively of Yield (brave I know)
Thin lizzy clears u2
Deep Purple is definitely worth checking out. They are one of my favourites! So many great albums and they are still going (the have new music out now!).
Deep Purple albums Machine Head, In Rock and of course Made In Japan to start. Also where's Yes and Jethro Tull?
This is good stuff dude! Keep this up. You’re inspirational dude
I never would have thought my silly little videos would be inspirational. Thank you so much!
Couldn't get em all on this list but I may pursue a part two at some point 👀
I believe that The Wall is their most well put together ad complete Pink Floyd album
Dude your a natural! Is this seriously your first channel. You are made for this !
Thanks so much! Yes this is my first attempt at being a UA-cam goober. Hope you'll stick around for more silly silly videos!
@@JerryBees do your thing bro! Subcribed. Will definitely check out more of your stuff
Excellent discussion. I’m a boomer and agree with nearly all your assessments. Now I want to make a video rating post-classic artists.
I really enjoy your vids man
Thanks so much!
Fun list.
I noticed night ranger wasnt on there. If it was where would you place it and why?
Not a big Night Ranger guy but I recognize their place I suppose. I can see them getting little kids in the '80s into rock and roll but those kids quickly moving on to other bands. You crawl with Night Ranger. You toddle with Winger. And you learn to walk with Van Halen. C tier.
@@JerryBees Thats fair, I like a lot of van halen like panama, jump, and aint talkin about love. I feel like they got a band where their all very good at their instruments. Maybe I will grow out of it.
No Jethro Tull on the list?
They seem to have been forgotten. Not even in the RnRHoF. Shame.
@@Gerard_Mulligan That's really a shame, they were one of the biggest bands of the 70s, and one of the best and most unique bands of all time!
@@Gerard_Mulligan Have you heard First Utterance by Comus?
What a fantastic video have a wonderful day also i am a fan of the rolling stones also led zeppelin also cream also tom petty and the Heartbreakers to the be honest ❤😊
Thanks for the love! I hope your week is so kick ass
Bob dylan should be on this list. The man combined folk with rock n roll to create the best rock trilogy of the 60s.
Bro had some personal issues with The who and Clapton but he earned my respect for putting CCR in the S row
I disagree on the D tier and F tier.
I agree 👍 who is on the S tier.
Not in this video. Moody Blues, The Kinks, Dave Clark 5, Jefferson Airplane/J Starship/Starship, Santana, Slade, T Rex, Iggy and the Stooges, Uriah Heep, Alan Parsons Project, Yes, The Animals, Roxy Music, Jethro Tull, Rainbow 🌈, Deep Purple, Motorhead, The Jam, The Scorpions 🦂, Golden Earring, Supertramp, Steely Dan, T Rex, The Yardbirds, Traffic
To keep this video from being an hour long, I had to make some crucial cuts. However, I was on vacation last week BLASTING Golden Earring
You forgot UFO
@@spacelion4763 Yes. I have the band of Rudy but not his brother Michael.
Personally, I would have the Beatles alone on a tier above s...
Man, i'ma haveta come back to this! Very interesting, but just wanted to get this comment off for now: I had to think who you sounded like, and I decided it was...Robert Downey Jr, lol. U've sort of got his voice and demeanor. Anyhow, you REALLY seem knowledgeable, smart, and the project is so interesting. I'm 59 and grew up on this insanely great music. Love hearing re CR from Z, etc! I agree with you about Alice Cooper being very cool, yet musically more "Meh" than "Yeah!" I trust u will LOVE Zeppelin, lol. Anyhow, TBC. Cheers!
I've never gotten Robert Downey before but I'll take it! Thanks for the kind words!
For the record, Physical Graffiti is Zep's best work imo
@@JerryBees Sure thing, and will be back for a deeper dive later. . And PG is in fact my fave Zep album, but it's close--ALMOST tied with all the others, lol.
@@joescott8877 it was LZ3 for the longest time but PG just ROCKS harder
@@JerryBees Interesting choice that shows your appreciation range. III was indeed "softer," yet showed Zep COULD "do" soft as well. PG DOES rock hard! I think if PG had been only sides 1&2, it would be considered one of the HARDEST rock albums ever. "In my time of dying," "trampled under foot," "The rover"... r u kidding me?? LOL Cheers.
I would like to say that the greatest debut album of all time is appetite for destruction. If you only know the hits its over rated but songs like my michelle and rocket queen make this so good. It has no skips imo and the fact they were able to make that with no existing discography is just amazing.
Supertramp is S tier, the Radiohead of its time, pink floyd without the presumption. But people are not ready for this conversation.
I cried over Tom Petty for some reason. I cried over Chester Bennington after that. No shame
Respect to the Ricky Starks theme.
Also, song is “It’s Live” by Mikey Rukus, posted to the AEW Music channel
King Crimson is a perfect group. Doesn't matter the lineup.
Fun topic. Ty.
Agree with you on Neil Shon, troubled child has one of my favorite guitar riffs of all time
Meddle is a fucking feat. Its good for any day
The Kinks?
I was working off of a tier list on tiermaker that didn't include the Kinks, but included enough bands for a more general video without it being an hour long. That said, the kinks are high A/low s
@@JerryBees Oh. I didn't know they had pre-made tier lists. Thanks for explaining it.
I’m not a fan of the 27 club
The Dead are on the same level if not higher than the ABB.
The issue with The Dead is that most classic rock radio stations don’t play their music that often.
My theory is that radio didn’t want to push The Dead that hard because it could lead to loss of listenership due to listeners falling into a abyss of live bootlegs and/or leaving town to follow the band around the country.
Since Jer checked out radio programmers would avoid The Dead to again avoid listeners going to bootlegs or finding GD adjacent jambands like Phish, SCI, or WSP that aren’t on classic rock radio playlists.
This is an interesting theory. Sucks too bc I love WSP
I got three words for you when it comes to The Beach Boys: The Wrecking Crew. That great famous bass line from Good Vibrations wasn't played by them, it was played by a woman name Carol Kaye. They were lifted from mediocrity many times by The Wrecking Crew.
Segers voice S tier
Why do you think Eric Clapton is crazy?
im guessing it's because of that crazy rant he went on where he basically just called the audience the n-word a bunch of times, (alongside a ton of slurs i've never even heard of) and then said any foreigners in the audience should leave because they shouldn't be there.
Def Leppard is awesome ear candy. One of my favorites! Most of your takes are excellent, though.
Thank you kindly!
"You're not wrong about everything. You're just wrong about too much to be liked" may be my favorite critique to date.
Eric Clapton casually being one of my favorite guitarists and singers oat…
No Tom Petty?
Mentioned him towards the end, albeit very quickly.
Missing bands? Steely Dan, Kansas, Jethro Tull, Toto, The Moody Blues, The Kinks, Deep Purple, Yes, Santana, Queen, U2. Nobody special really. ;)
I thought this was a video about music. Clapton might be bat shit crazy, but Cream is one of the best classic rock bands ever. There are a lot of questionable characters on this list. I respect your opinions, but I disagree with many of these rankings. Thanks for taking the time to make it.
This is *fantastic!*
Do you have a Twitter?
Thanks so much!
I don't have a Twitter (and hopefully never will) vut you can find me on Instagram and tiktok!
Have you ever listen to the album the song remains the same?
Why the bon jovi hate though?
Good list, I’d call the misses as the Who not being S tier and not liking Neil Young, but guess that’s subjective
Listen to the album These Days if you don’t like Bon Jovi. Your mind will be changed
allman brothers in A is generous C or D for me
A tier stands for Allman 😎
Saw paul Rogers alone I put bc in 80 somthin..kick ass.
Everyone sleeps on the Bob Welch era of Fleetwood Mac. I could list 25 songs from Bob's FM and Paris albums and his solo albums and Bob would look pretty great.
If only he never found that cult tsk tsk
You should listen to Deep Purple's albums "In Rock", "Fireball" and "Machine Head" just to educate yourself. ;-)
In between Heart and Nirvana, the precursor band to grunge was called the Melvins, go look them up
Oh I love the Melvin's but I didn't know that they were from Seattle. Thanks!
This vid deserves way more views!
Thank u 🥺
Deep purple is very good, and that's why you should listen to then.
Glee made Journey and other relevant to another generation ... BUT AT WHAT COST?!?
With alice cooper, he dipped his toe into all kinds of stuff. Therefore, the esthetic sometimes fit the music.
Early Def Leppard is classic (first three records). Also, definitely check out more Deep Purple. Styx is definitely not strip club music and also (some) of your generation needs to stop being offended by everything (e.g. Skynyrd). It's called history.
You need to listen to Child in Time by Deep Purple.
Tony Banks is the Engine Room of Genesis!
The Police were a really great jazz band masquerading as a really great rock band.
Such a good take
@@JerryBees Thanks.
Ok so what is classic rock? is it just rock from the 60s-80s, or is it just any type of old rock because if thats the case then yes nirvana and pearl jam are classic rock
I know they’re not really a classic rock band but The Clash, you should’ve ranked them.
Clash are def A tier at the very least imo
What about the Guess Who, or Janis Joplin?
The Band, The Kinks, War, Procol Harum, Steely Dan, Devo, XTC, Three Dog Night, Jethro Tull, The Faces, The Sweet, Grand Funk, Badfinger, Cheap Trick and, for a little pop fun, The Turtles and The Monkees.
I've often said that Badfinger may go down as THE most underrated band. They have their loyal fans, but not nearly as many as they should have.
@@JerryBees You are correct, sir.
Whaaaaaat. Who is B tier? Best bassist in rock n roll history, top 5 rock drummer… Townshend is one of the greatest song writers ever and is a solid guitarist and Daltrey was a vocal powerhouse when he was young….. how are they not S tier?😭
Rock yeA.when bon Scott sang riff Raff I believed it
Australians do it differently
Deep Purple-listen to Hush, Space Truckin’, Highway Star
Music is such a subjective topic. I think the only thing most music fans agree on is that The Beatles were the best rock/pop band in history. The real battle is for the #2 slot. For me, that would be Van Halen. I love both the Roth albums and the Sammy albums.
5150 was a valiant effort in making a hit album after your front man leaves the band.
What can I say. Ranking music is goofy and it takes a goofy person to get it done. Thanks!!!!
