We did the same thing with our kids right down to the same bed. I made it a very cozy space for both kids. I put some curtains up around the bottom bunk using a tension rod and we used the tent from Ikea on the top bunk to give each kid their own space (that I let them, for the most part, do what they want as far as stuffed toys and decorating).
One thing that seems to work for my guy is emphasizing that he is a big boy and how special that is and that means he gets a big boy bed and what ever else that comes with in your family.
I think that you are on the right track, making sure you get them back into their beds if they wake at night, I think it's just going to take some time, but it's a bit of pain now for a lot of gain later.

We are transitioning too- I really feel you on this. I had to wait for some communication milestones with my son to happen before I stopped co-sleeping and that didn't happen until he was a few months older than Jack is now I think. It really started to come together when he became motivated by wanting to be a "big boy". I was able to explain that big boys fall asleep alone in their own beds and lavish the praise on him for doing it in the morning. Before he could understand this I found it impossible to avoid a giant hours long saga of a melt-down and would eventually give up and continue to lie with him until he fell asleep. He still gets up in the middle of the night (it's been about a month) and I still have to walk him back to his room at least once a night, usually 2 or 3 times. Like you say - it's exhausting!! I take it night by night and try not to beat myself up if I just can't get up to take him back to his room. Rome wasn't built in a day! Best of luck to you guys!!

Hi Amanda. First of all, I love you and your family. I found you through your weaning videos when I was struggling weaning my daughter (4 now) You were so helpful. We coslept for 3,5 years with my daughter. She wanted a room for herself but she wasn't quite ready. What I did with her is; I slept with her in her bed for 3 days. Then I started to go back to my room after she fell asleep. Since she wasn't naping during the day she was being so tired to wake up at night but She was coming back in the morning. And sleeping an hour with me. She still comes and now she doesn't sleep in my bed. Only a little snuggle :) that worked fine for us. Hope that helps loves and kisses 🤗

We did the cosleeping transition too. It was so hard! I find she falls asleep in her bed if I lay with her and rub her tummy. She sometimes sleeps through the night or sometimes comes and crawls in with us. If I put her back in her bed she comes back every hour and it's a battle only the sleepless can win! I will say though my husband recently came up with making her bed a fort (we have a sort of similar IKEA bed that you have, he hung blankets down the sides so her bed is completely enclosed). She LOVES it. We refer to her bed as her fort and that makes bedtime so much easier. She also has her quiet time in her fort with her iPad every day as well which I think helps with her comfort level. Sleep changes are soooo hard! Sending you some sleepy magic and mama high fives

  • @jaymelynnway

I'm late to the party, but just wanted to throw my advice in: I would just wait. Keep doing exactly what you're doing, maybe diffuse some sleepy essential oils or add some soft lullaby instrumentals, but otherwise just wait it out. When we transitioned my oldest at age 3 to her own room it was a lot of back and forth. But after a few months she started sleeping longer and longer on her own. It's just about consistency. And I FEEL YOU on the sudden difficulty sleeping yourself. It's been almost 2 years since we moved my oldest out and I still sleep way better on the odd nights that she finagles her way into our bed. Something about being sandwiched between my little baby and my big baby is just more secure. I guess because I know for sure that they're both safe?
We're getting ready to start putting my just turned one year old in her own little bed in our room. She's starting to get really restless in the bed and I think we're disturbing her. So we'll do a year or two in our room but in her own bed and then start her in her own room. Fingers crossed it goes smoothly.

We are doing the transition from crib to big girl bed and it was going great for about a week but now like clockwork, the 1:30am sprint from her bed to ours takes place and I'm too tired to take her back to her room so I'm letting her sleep the end of the night in our bed...but she got a new Frozen pillow case today to stay in her bed at night, lol. Not sure that'll work so I'm pumping myself up to taking her back to her bed tonight when she comes in...You're right, the getting lots of sleep to interrupted sleep is rough! Solidarity!

I would like to suggest not starting in your bed and transferring when he's asleep. He needs to learn that this is his bed, this is where he sleeps. With my daughter the expectation was I could "make" her stay in her bed, the sleeping part was up to her. Books, toys,Fisher Price tape recorder (yes, it was that long ago) all up for grabs. But no getting out of bed. Sure, there were midnight renditions of Aristocats. But I didn't have to get out of bed. She was in control, within her boundaries.

I know it sounds crazy, but we are a family of 5 in a one bedroom! It works for us right now, as we're saving to buy a house. My 3 year old (former co sleeping/ nursed until 2 years old) climbs into our bed about once a week. Sometimes I'm too tired to put him back in bed and I get kicked in the face 😂 But I just think it takes time and eventually he won't wake up and move into our bed. Good luck! Bunk beds & IKEA are the best!

I moved my two daughters into the same room (7yrs and 21months) and they sleep together in a full size bed. It was honestly the easiest way to transition them out of my bed. I still get my 7 year old waking up and wanting to get into bed with me but for the most part things are going really well.

Did you put slats or anything to support the mattress on the floor?

  • @NCRmama
    @NCRmama 7 років тому

Your set up looks a lot like ours! We didn't co-sleep quite like you did though. The kids would be put down in their own bed and they'd end up in ours in the middle of the night. When we transitioned our eldest to a real bed, we ended up just using a double bed we already had, so when bébé numéro 2 came along, hubby would go into his bed while baby and mama stayed in the master bed. But my kids share a room now (5 and 2,5 years old). My son is still in his double bed (on the floor), and daughter is still in her crib (they've been sharing for almost a year now I would say), but we'll have to transition her eventually (she actually randomly asked for a new bed a few months ago). They have a shared dresser, a bookshelf and a few toys in the closet (mostly puzzles and some blocks). I've thought about bunk beds, but I worry about my oldest falling out in the middle of the night since he's used to a bigger bed, or tripping down the ladder. You haven't had any issues with that? When the youngest has trouble falling asleep, her brother tries to comfort her, and it seems to help. We rarely have to go back in once we've left them for the night (DD has always been a better sleeper than DS). We had to stop staying until they fell asleep because both of them (separately) went through a phase of taking over an hour to fall asleep because they just kept talking to us! Our set up works for now, hopefully yours will work for you too!

I've preparing myself to transition my 9 month old from cosleeping to his own bed. He still wakes up 2-6 times a night or more wanting to be rocked or nursed back to sleep. So for over a year I haven't gotten more than 3 hours in a row of sleep, bc when I was pregnant I was waking up to pee all the time! Needless to say I'm exhausted, my last vlog was actually about this. I think we're going to have to do Ferber.

I feel like sometimes a sound machine helps, a fan, with our kids it's just a very strict: 6pm everyone starts getting into baths and pajamas, 7pm daughter goes down, then the boys depending on who is more sleepy lol and my husband travels a ton as he works in the news business so I usually have to do it alone so I can't be lax about it. I'm hoping when my baby is older he will share a room with my daughter because they are both amazing sleepers!

My four year old and 9 month old both sleep in the same room with that exact bed. My kids never liked cribs so we used a Montessori floor bed and it worked for both kids. I try to put the baby to sleep first but it's not always the case. If we put them to bed at the same time I feel the key to a having them really accept sleeping in their own room is having them fall asleep without me there. The 4 year old is used to this, but of course our 9 month old still has a couple rough days. I'm a found believe in sneaking out of the room in any way you can. Ninja your way out. Also a camera to watch them does wonders. You don't have to buy one of those expensive baby monitors. If you just buy a simple security camera that run maybe 40-70 and have someone in the house who is handy, you can set it up so you can view it on your phone. That way you know if they really are behaving. Just because they are quiet doesn't mean the are doing bad things. Our 9 month old still wakes up every night at least once or twice, and our daughter is just used to his noises so she doesn't wake up, even if I trip over something as I come in. I really love them sharing a room, it has established such a loving relationship, one night my 9 month old woke up and I had to use the bathroom before running in there and helping him, and I found my 4 year old cuddling with him and trying to calm him down with his favorite toy. There were many sleepless nights in the beginning but we are really happy with the choices we made.

I have a 20 month old and I'm almost ready to wwan him off co sleeping. The only thing that was keeping me from doing so was that at night we connect him to a feeding pump and he tangles himself around the line, sometimes around his neck. SO I felt like I needed him near me so I can feel him move around and monitor him but now we are trying to schedule his feeling so we don't have to connect him during the night while were sleeping. I've been looking at that ikea loft bed for 2 weeks now because my daughter would LOVE to have sleep overs when he starts sleeping in his room.

We don't cosleep, so I don't have any experience here. Do you encourage Jack to have anything to snuggle in his bed? We started forcing a lovey (super tiny blanket) on my son when he was 9 or 10 months old, and now he sleeps with that every night and for naptime. He didn't care for it at first, but now it's his favorite thing. Maybe having a stuffed animal or something that Jack can snuggle will help him feel a little more comfortable when he wakes up during the night.
