KFC used to use real potatoes in their mashed potatoes. I'm betting that their chicken is genetically modified because the bones are tiny in porportion to the meat on the bone.
Kentucky Fried Chicken in the 1970s was great. The original was never crispy because it was pressure-cooked, but that skin and breading combination used to be delicioso! They even had pullybone pieces. These days I fry my own in an iron skillet.
Church’s is really a hit or miss - the first time I went there, it was really good because it seemed that I got it straight out of the fryer. The following times I went, it felt like sometimes the fried chicken had been sitting around for a while and wasn’t as crispy. Got to get it when it’s fresh!
Look for Sarah Doan's comment from a year ago. She makes a gluten free fried chicken using Bobs Gluten Free Flour. So there are options to still enjoy fried chicken.
My favorite fast food chicken by a country mile (see what I did there?) is Krispy Krunchy Chicken. It's mainly sold in quick mart places attached to gas stations all over the U.S., but ... It is absolutely the best because they marinate it in seasoned buttermilk overnight before they batter and fry it up fresh. Incredible.
You are an amazing Southern Gentleman, funny but honest in your expectatiibs for fried chicken. KFC is not good fried chicken. USED to be great and tasty now it's just barely mediocre.
When I moved into the neighbourhood 15 years ago, I was delighted that there was a KFC just a block from the major intersection, which was about another block away from me, because that meant it was close by for the Tuesday special every week. What I would do is to purchase the special, then pay extra for an extra thigh. Eventually, I noticed that the pieces were getting smaller, and finally realized that what was going on was that the thighs were being cut in half, but still being advertised as full thighs. Luckily there was a Popeye's near me as well, but a bit of a further walk, like nearly two stoplights away. Their Tuesday special was also a leg and thigh, with sides costing less for the special, so I'd get a side of fries. Turns out that the cost of a leg and WHOLE thigh at Popeye's, with fries, ended up only costing me 40 cents more then what I had been paying at KFC for essentially the same thing. So now, every Tuesday, I will walk that extra distance to get Popeye's. (I really don't know what happened. It might have been a decision at the corporate level, or it might have been a decision made at that store. I DO know that for some time they had one server there who was so bad that the only reason I could think of as to why she still had her job was that she was married to the franchise owner.)
I grew up with Church's. The secret to getting good chicken from there, is go to a busy store. The chicken doesn't have time to sit under the lamps. And don't forget a cup of jalapenos, drizzle the juice over the chicken before you eat it. And I totally agree with your assessment of KFC. They don't know how to cut up a chicken right.
Last time I ate at a Church's, probably 30+ years ago, I got a piece of chicken that was bloody inside. Not just pink, but bloody. Have not been back since.
Sir, as someone who's moved around all over the South, I can confirm, your rankings are right on point. Bojangles, Popeye's, Church's, and f*** KFC. I actually had this conversation with a couple guys stocking at my grocery store just yesterday.
First I must say how much I envy you for getting to do this. Second I must applaud your accuracy in your rankings, including acknowledging that although Church's is 3rd it's a darn good 3rd. Now I must point out the problem with this process: it seems you got the mild chicken at Popeyes, which is an abomination. Popeyes is a spicy chicken restaurant. Mild was not even on the original menu, and was only added later because some people are psychotic. The other side of this is that even if you get the spicy at a location outside of Louisiana it's still hit or miss. "Spicy" Popeyes from New Orleans (you should never have to specify spicy) is a huge cut above and beats Bojangles due to its perfect flavor, texture, and juiciness. Despite my obvious bias, though, otherwise I completely agree with your assessment of my favorite food. 🤜🏼🤛🏼
while your not wrong... this only matters to people IN Louisiana. Bojangles is great chicken everywhere. When I was going to college in Kennesaw though, the lady at Popeye's always gave me a little side of gravy... and that stuff.... whoo mama!
Jokes on you, Mary. Bojangles doesn't have "spicy" chicken. They have Bojangles chicken, which is spicy deliciousness. They didn't puss out like Popeyes. 😉
@@toddmintz4269 Bojangles only has spicy chicken it’s just not called spicy since it’s the only kind they have. He got non spicy at Popeyes and Church’s completely unfair comparison. Bojangles should be third place.
I’m from Philly and I’m nothing close to southern but when I visit my cousins in Raleigh North Carolina and them bojangles chicken biscuits bless my soul with that iced tea and bo’ rounds (hash browns) mmmmmmm mmm
Publix may not have a drive thru ( over 1250 locations ) but at the very least deserve an honorable mention because of price, never greasy, always moist and crispy also the red potatoes salad is usually good
When we moved away from Atlanta back to North Carolina that's the one thing I missed most is Publix Fried Chicken. But now they have a Publix in my town and I'm diggin' it.
My cousin visited us in Alabama and gets excited for Publix just because of the fact that it’s so big, and she hasn’t even tasted the fried chicken yet...

I actually work at Bojangles if you do a review on Chicken Sandwiches I guarantee you Bojangles is in the Top 3 or is Number one. All of the chicken we serve is like a Cajun flavor to, the biscuits are always made fresh. I love to work in the biscuit area, and I make sure all the biscuits I make are fresh.
As a native of Kentucky, U RIGHT! the natives that I know don’t even touch it like we used to. The Sanders family sold the company but kept the recipe Harland used.
The funny thing is some of the best chicken I have ever gotten has been at gas stations, those independents that have a little kitchen shoved into a corner and do chicken and breakfast biscuits.
Matt is so funny (and eloquent) describing fried chicken. 😂 I've never had Bojangles but I agree with the order of the other 3. But Church's biscuits are better than Popeye's😊❤
@catonic She didn't say she prefers it she just said that it is there. I think it might be because it is the cheapest bulk buy there is (I think churches is cheaper but yeah that is either a hit or big miss depending on location)
As an NC resident, can't disagree with your assessment. At the same time, the quality can vary by store. In our area, there are 8 Bojangle's locations within reasonable driving distance. Two are absolute no-go's due to poor management and quality. Four are excellent - with the other two being hit or miss. Popeye's has tried to make inroads - though its two sites are terrible due to poor management and quality. It's a shame because I have had some excellent Popeye's chicken in other parts of the country.
First of all, I don't understand why anyone would get the original over extra crispy at KFC. That's like going to Outback Steakhouse and passing on the Bloomin Onion and asking for onion rings to be brought in from Burger King as a substitute. I typically get the crispiest and spiciest at every location that I go to, with that in mind, my ranks of these 4 are: 4. Church's 3. Bojangles 2. Popeye's 1. KFC
when i was a kid, before an Auburn game, we would go through the Hardee's Drive-Thru and get a basket of their fried chicken and take it to tailgate. that was good stuff.
I thoroughly vicariously enjoyed watching you eat chicken. The other video of you eating single bites of candy bars and throwing the rest away was good, too. Subscribed.
Church’s is the best. Their breading is great and seasoned just right. The local Church’s closed down almost a year ago and I’m still upset. Best locally now is Popeyes
It didnt meet the drive thru criteria, but I have discovered that in the south(as well as the world at large), major grocery store fried chicken is usually the best you can get in town.
I remember when KFC was a sit down restaurant and it was ALWAYS amazing. What ruined them was BECOMING a fast food restaurant with a drive thru. I've ate at two Popeyes and wasn't impressed by either. I've never even seen Church's. Bojangles depends on the store and management. We have 4 Bojangles within 30 miles of my house. One serves the best chicken I've ever eaten, the 2 in my "direct" local area are OK, and the 4th is in a bigger town to our west and they flat out serve nothing but dog food (and that's being generous).
you were 100% spot on... on the rankings !!!! i made the mistake of getting KFC last week for the family I asked for extra crispy because thats what the kids wanted and received original I got 3 biscuits instead of the 4 youre supposed to get The drive thru girl was on meth or something She was flailing her arms around and i could not understand a thing she was saying I called them when i got home and discovered my order was wrong No return call I called KFC customer service She listened to me but never heard anything back No more KFC ever They used to be one of my favorites Bojangles and Popeyes from now on !!!!!!!!
I actually really like KFC, they were my friends when my bojangles temporarily closed and was getting remodeled. Popeyes unfortunately isn’t close to my area and the gas station that is I never seem to get spicy no matter how many times I tell them spicy.
It should make you happy to know I'm in the process of setting something up like this exact idea as a channel. I'm not quite at Steevie Wonder's level, but I'm very much legally blind and I've been bouncing this idea around with friends and family for years since I travel so much. Its an opportunity to do something different. Just going to try not to step on the kings toes on this though
Bojangles used to have two flavors of fried chicken, southern and Cajun. Southern was amazing chicken with no spiciness whatsoever. Cajun was almost like eating hot wings. At some point, they just met in the middle and made nothing but mild spiced chicken. It's still good, but nothing like what it used to be. If you've never had southern chicken from Bojangles, you don't know what you're missing. With that being said, Bojangles is still the best in my book, and it's not just because of their fried chicken. Their breakfast menu sets them apart rivaling and outdoing all other fast-food chains. If fact, I bet they make more from breakfast items than anything else.
He showed a bias toward Popeye's but rightly so -- it is awesome. However, the rankings were fair and accurate so what would a blindfold do? The outcome would be the same.
You LITERALLY Just made me call my husband to bring home Popeyes 😂 Though I will say as a Mississippi girl,,, No body beats my home fried chicken.... But I'm lazy tonight .lol

I’m now gluten free (also for health reasons) and miss regular fried chicken so much! I make a pretty tasty and juicy gluten free fried chicken though-using Bobs Gluten Free Flour. Pretty close but not quite. I fully agree with Matt’s criteria-flavor and crispness are everything!!! Fried chicken just makes me happy, too, people, I understand! Dark meat is also superior. Mmm. Absolutely delicious and spot on!!! Another fantastic video filled with delicious food! Makes me crave fried chicken! I agree the KFC isn’t the best. Church’s is crispy & delicious though but definitely always in the ghetto, even here in Las Vegas. I prefer it better over Popeyes or KFC. Church’s wins for me! Yeah I’d rather have a sandwich instead of that sad and disappointing chicken.
the saddest part is they show out for the international market and let the us market eat a sad shell of what kfc used to be
Kentucky Fried Chicken in the 1970s was great. The original was never crispy because it was pressure-cooked, but that skin and breading combination used to be delicioso! They even had pullybone pieces. These days I fry my own in an iron skillet.
KFC depends on the restaurant though. I've ate at KFCs that I thought were delicious, and I've ate at ones I would never go back to! Lol
Matthew we have a new kfc close to where we live and it’s good. Popeyes is still better. Bojangles I’m allergic to their chicken

Matthew Allen I agree! Im from Kentucky and I moved to Canada and I refuse to eat KFC up here cause its awful and they don’t have the same sides!

Church’s is really a hit or miss - the first time I went there, it was really good because it seemed that I got it straight out of the fryer. The following times I went, it felt like sometimes the fried chicken had been sitting around for a while and wasn’t as crispy. Got to get it when it’s fresh!

@@karenwhite2338 Thank you! Would it surprise you to learn that I'm only one-half a "wild-eyed Southern boy" (on my Mom's side)? :)
The Krispy Krunchy down the street from work used to have a 2 breasts for $5 deal. Holy Lord.
@@karenwhite2338 When I was growing up KFC's chicken was great but now its just greasy and nasty.
That sounds awesome! However, I've never come across it.
You really wrote a three paragraph comment on fried chicken. You need to relax sir. No one has time to read all that. Lol
@@RyanRediger66 lol...I did! 😄
Yes!! You gotta go either when it's busy or when they just open so it's always fresh!
Sadly, not every Church's is created equal.

I actually had this conversation with a couple guys stocking at my grocery store just yesterday.

kfc: 11 oils and greases
When I was going to college in Kennesaw though, the lady at Popeye's always gave me a little side of gravy... and that stuff.... whoo mama!
He didn't get the spicy chicken from Bojangles either, so stop you're crying Nancy, The man has spoken. LOL
Jokes on you, Mary. Bojangles doesn't have "spicy" chicken. They have Bojangles chicken, which is spicy deliciousness. They didn't puss out like Popeyes. 😉
100% correct. Spicy chicken is the normal Popeyes chicken.
@@toddmintz4269 Bojangles only has spicy chicken it’s just not called spicy since it’s the only kind they have. He got non spicy at Popeyes and Church’s completely unfair comparison. Bojangles should be third place.

Publix may not have a drive thru ( over 1250 locations ) but at the very least deserve an honorable mention because of price, never greasy, always moist and crispy also the red potatoes salad is usually good

9:53 anyone who has had a really good piece of fried chicken knows what that means
"11 herbs and spices, not that anyone is asking for it that I am aware of." Lol
First of all, I don't understand why anyone would get the original over extra crispy at KFC. That's like going to Outback Steakhouse and passing on the Bloomin Onion and asking for onion rings to be brought in from Burger King as a substitute. I typically get the crispiest and spiciest at every location that I go to, with that in mind, my ranks of these 4 are:
4. Church's
3. Bojangles
2. Popeye's
1. KFC
Popeyes spicy is actually their original and regular was added later. That was done in early years so it wasn't so hot for the wimps. Lol.😂
I prefer the mild because I like to taste the chicken as well. The spicy chicken is overwhelmed by the spices and the chicken flavor just disappears.
Spicy with hot sauce is best

It didnt meet the drive thru criteria, but I have discovered that in the south(as well as the world at large), major grocery store fried chicken is usually the best you can get in town.
"Those are chicken fingers. Have you lost your mind?" Pahahahaha. I know, right?
Bo’s only has one flavor of bone in. There is no spicy or mild. Popeye’s must be ordered spicy to get the true, unadulterated experience.
Man I went to Popeyes the other day and that shit was so damn expensive I coulda gone to a real restaurant and and even paid the tip.
I have a metric for fast food. Would I rather eat a ribeye that costs x. I simply would rather eat a ribeye over eating at popeyes.
its worth it. Get what you pay for
Exactly what were saying watching this. We pulled up to the drive through & left because of the prices...went to Chickfila
Popeyes is very expensive
Not worth it. Popeyes is more about crunch and less about juicy chicken. Bojangles was cheaper. KFC is expensive but I feel it's worth it.
Apparently, you've never had Korean Fried Chicken. It's amazing.
you were 100% spot on... on the rankings !!!! i made the mistake of getting KFC last week for the family I asked for extra crispy because thats what the kids wanted and received original I got 3 biscuits instead of the 4 youre supposed to get The drive thru girl was on meth or something She was flailing her arms around and i could not understand a thing she was saying I called them when i got home and discovered my order was wrong No return call I called KFC customer service She listened to me but never heard anything back No more KFC ever They used to be one of my favorites Bojangles and Popeyes from now on !!!!!!!!
I actually really like KFC, they were my friends when my bojangles temporarily closed and was getting remodeled. Popeyes unfortunately isn’t close to my area and the gas station that is I never seem to get spicy no matter how many times I tell them spicy.
It's still Popeyes for me....

Do you really trust the opinions of skinny people when it comes to fast food?
@@tomleonard830 dude, I have seen skinny people that can put down food like nobody's business.
I used to get one Southern and one Cajun when they were available. I wish they would bring the Southern back.
