I prefer to multiclass Monk and Barbadian. 11 Monk and 9 Barbarian feels like the ideal ratio. I like to switch around subclasses, but so far Totem Warrior and Kensei seem to have best synergy. Though Sun Soul and Storm Herald were a fun combo too.
Offbeat Outlaw: How to play a monk. Just multiclass fighter and ranger, and rely on those abilities to do all your damage. This was 5 levels of monk, 3 ranger and 2 fighter. For 8 attacks. You could also just do 5 ranger, 2 fighter for 7 attacks by dual wielding weapons. The monk levels add almost nothing for damage. Astral self costs a ki point to enter. So you only have 4 ki points for stunning strike. That sounds like a lot, but by level 10, a good build can just kill the enemy in 1 round instead of stunning them. Unless it is a legendary creature, but most of those have really good constitution saves, so you likely only get to strip off 1 of their legendary resistances. With all the multiclassing you do, you don't get enough ki to be an effective monk. Also this build has 3 bonus actions required to be fully set up. - Shillelagh - Hunter's mark - Astral self So finally be turn 4 you can start utilizing your extra martial arts attack you get from monk as a bonus action. Or start using flurry of blows. But more realistically you have to move your hunter's mark because the target is dead. I notice this a lot of Offbeat outlaw builds, they can have 1 really good turn, if everything is set up right. But you don't consider how hard / easy it is to set those things up. If by any chance Offbeat Outlaw reads this. Here is the main tip to improve your builds. Ask yourself. If I can't prepare for combat. What do I do on turn 1, 2 and 3. If the answer is mostly set up stuff for the future, you should probably rethink the build. In the case of this build, you should cut out some of the bonus action stuff, because you can't use it all anyway. I would cut Shillelagh to begin with. Your staff won't be as accurate, but by level 5, you can switch to using your fists only, and not lose much.
I make one turn nova builds because those are the ones people like to watch on UA-cam. I’ve made other builds that don’t require as much set up and are more consistent but nobody watched them. This build is particularly tricky to get just right but I acknowledge that in the video. Keep in mind, not every build is meant to be used, sometimes it can be just interesting to see what you can do for the sake of it. I realize this content might not be for everyone, but these videos are fun for me to make which is the only way i judge whether or not I should do something. Worsts comes to worst you miss out on 20 avg damage and the average Nova damage is 90, which is still great and you can do that by turn 3. And I ain’t looking for advice on my builds, they do exactly what I need them to.
So I haven't done the math, it's almost 6 am as I'm typing this out and I am the tired. But I wanted to give what I thought was a good/simple monk build at higher levels. Step 1: Take Kensei at level 3. Step 2: Once you hit level 17 put levels into fighter until you're a level 20 character. Have a finesse weapon and at some point take defensive duelist. As a fighter take battlemaster and take duelist. If you do it right you can have a fuck ton of AC and be even better at hitting with your Kensei weapon which I should recommend a rapier as you'll need it for this. If people want I can do the math for the best possible AC for this with this build but not right now. ...... Nevermind I just did and the best possible AC with just a rapier and nudity is 28. You get 20 if you max out dex and wisdom (as you should) an extra 2 thanks to Agile Parry, and on a reaction you can add your prof bonus which will be 6 at this point so you'll have 28 total AC. Tell anything dumb enough to attack you to suck your amazing monk abs.
I have a 2nd/3.5 edition monk at 6th level, deals 2d8 damage up to 6 times in 1 action, can move roughly 40 - 50 ft an action, and due to DM's world building, can cast up to 3rd level spells based on ki, life force, or mana
Monk Moon Druid multiclass is also a pretty good one. Personally I have been looking to play a Monk Rogue to just have crazy mobility. Ranger is a bit meh as you can get better stuff from multiclassing with fighter most of the time unless you are planning more than just a one or two level dip
If you were using Tasha's then you could do more damage if you have a long sword and use the Dedicated Weapon ability, if you do that and you hold the long sword with two hands then you'll be doing an extra +2 to damage per attack than with a quarter staff, sine it only does a d8 with two hands
I made a tiefling (zariel) college of whispers bard and swashbuckler rogue multiclass once We were at level ten and I had taken 5 levels in each, for the asi’s I chose metamagic adept and warlock magic innate It was very fun to play
Now with the new bugbear... Lose the feat(unneeded with Tasha's druidic warrior) but gain up to 16d6(56) damage on that first turn, plus extra range, plus extra sneaky etc... With Bugbear you might wanna start with Gloomstalker and then Monk. I wouldn't be surprised if Bugbear get nerfed real soon.
In order to do that on your first turn you need to have hunters mark and shileleigh already active. You will almost never be able to do that unless you are always casting shileleigh. Also the unarmed strikes would not benefit from your wisdom unless somehow you were able to get out your Astral arms before the first turn as well.
One monk multiclass I'm tinkering with a power build of is a max saves mage slayer type build. 14 monk 6 paladin. +5 charisma and prof in all saves making the lowest save being +10 (accounting for inevitable -1 build stats in stuff like int) tack on something like bless making the absolute lowest being a +11. get mage slayer for advantage on all saves if they are within 5 feet and use your ki on rerolling failed saves, you are looking at some insane saves. using intelligence as a low end example, -1 int +5 cha, +6 prof, +2.5 bless, 15.5 average roll (adv + diamond soul reroll) = 28. if its a charisma save, good luck failing a 34. and im sure there is a lot more optimizing to be had here.
Fighter 3 battle master. Build for dex, con, and wisdom. Monk 7 way of the open hand. Take magic initiate for hex and eldritch blast. Druid 10 circle of the moon. Rock a ten foot tall, thousand pound grizzly bear that has a 20 ac and can land: 6x2d6 claws 2x1d10 bites 8x1d6 hex 5x1d8 superiority dice +40 in one round at level ten
Rogue/any 14 Monk/way of shadow 6. Free teleporting as a bonus action an unlimited use and no need to do hiding or any of that stupid sneaky stuff cause it gives you advantage. Also you can cast Darkness (I.E. free teleporting anywhere) and Pass Without a Trace (cause why not?) Take the Eldritch Adept feat in Tasha's and chose devil's sight. Now you can see through the magical darkness you're teleporting into, giving yourself auto advantage on any attack without having to roll stealth.
but... hexblade monk :C lvl 5 monk with flurry of blow hits 4 hits right? that's normal damage + 4d6 from hex + 4xprof bonus from hexblade's curse + double crit chance maybe if you can get to third level you can get pact of the chain imp to look through it's eyes while you use the darkness spell for free advantage at all times and you got a familiar now and you got invocations maybe get gift of the everliving ones for max healing so you're a damage monster that can soak a decent ammount of damage and gets healed max from all dice maybe be a dhamphir because monk dhampir is fun stuff cuz u can use the bite as monk weapon so start healing and damaging...
Way of The Astral Self Monk/Circle of The Moon Druid. Wildshape merely says you cant cast spells it says nothing about not being able to use arms of astral self and flurry of blows as a 9ft tall grizzly bear
Oh oh! I just made a monk/Rouge/fighter hybrid that is LETHAL! Try this half elf monk 6(way of shadow), Rouge 11 (assassin), and fighter (battlemaster). Fighter gets unarmed fighting (makes punches d8 plus dex) grab elven accuracy and bam! Sneak attack every round, always have advantage, and after you land stunning fist, insta crit on all attacks
You don't need magic initiate. You can just take the druidic warrior fighting style instead and bump your dex or wis (or take the alert feat if you're that kind of person).
The problem with your first turn explosion is that hunter's mark and flurry of blows are both a bonus action, and that's assuming you saw the encounter coming far enough in advance to cast shillelagh and get your astral arms out. If you're caught off-guard, it's not until the fifth round of combat that all those can go off at once.
Can you take the druidic fighter for the Shillelagh and take some other feat for variant human? I was thinking skill expert to boost that dex and you can take one more feat or raise your wis to 20 if point by.
My dragonborn way of the dragon monk is most definitely a damage dealer, she's level sixteen able to making between 10 and 18 breath attacks (ki dependent) before needing to rest. She's also able to make 2 breath attacks per turn
I mean it might be a bit tricky to have all of this online before battle begins, but if you have an opportunity for a surprise then sure. Didn't remember Action Surge would double up my Dread Ambusher, if I wasn't already taking a bit of Scout Rogue side dish that would be pretty cool.
ehm, monk druid multiclassing is hillarious, because according to wildshape rules you can do flurry of blows as a bear (or whatever creature), so you can call it the worst for minmaxing, but if you are wanting to make the most powerful (insert beast here) build, druid/barbarian/monk is obvs the best option. Personally I'd lovw to see battlemaster and assasin beasts tho
So I am going to let you know about a monk multi class I've done and how good she actually is. Her name is Serena Delmare she is a Way of the 4 elements monk mixed with a Tempest cleric. Now normally These 2 classes wouldn't have much synergy but thanks to Tasha's I have the ability to create one dedicated weapon and in her case it's an enchanted rapier called quickling's ivy. So in summary I have a monk who thanks to her cleric side can wield martial weapons. I have in a lot of ways made a character who is a literal and figurative force of nature. And other fun bonus while she doesn't wear armour she actually is fully able to thanks to her cleric proficiencies which came in real handy when she had to disguise herself as a guard one time.
You should try to do the max possible speed/jumping distance? My thought is that if you had a rabbitfolk monk and cast jump on it and got the boots of springing and striding, then you would get a free 9d12 of movement speed every turn. How crazy could you make this?
The highest damage dealer in my party is a monk :), true, with a lot of homebrew with gives them some race resistances, and some subclass abilities (10 foot unarmed attack range) +2d6 psychic damage once per turn, and with the Eldritch Claw Tattoo, doing 4d10+6d6+24 damage in one turn assuming all successes with Flurry of Blows, don't underestimate monks, sir. This IS a 12th level character, but still, a max of 100 damage split between 4 attacks, think of if one of them crit, Celeste is our BEST damage dealer and overall combatent. Don't. Underestimate. Monks.
See I have a similar build. 5 echo knight 3 gloom stalker 2 barb. Level 10. 8 attacks first round with a two handed weapon with advantage. Great weapon master and mobile for feats. At level 11 I take ranger 4 and get the alert feat. 2 levels of druid spore. Then the rest fighter. It has been a blast to play. Hit and run you are not tanking in this class
other youtubers have done it, monk tabaxi with haste on them or smth, so tabaxi any monk + bladesinger wizard cuz they also get a speed boost. something like that
Ok so monk tabaxi is an obvs way to go, and the mobile feat at 4th, however if you want to make it cooler, you make it a blue tabaxi from an island of a tribe of tabaxi's called hedgehogs due to their particularily stiff fur, and just make sonic the hedgehog. The blue color can be because they drank some black panther-esque herbal tea that made them fast as the chosen one of the tribe or whatever. It's so cool
I like using the unarmed fighting style with fighter and then multiclassing into monk for a bunch of good unarmed strikes and I know that's only actually good for the early to mid game but I love boxing monsters

Hey, I know this is a late comment but not long ago I created a cleric tank build that had an 18 or 19 base AC at Lvl 1 with no home brew using point buy. On top of all that at Lvl1 still the AC can then be boosted to 21 I believe through the simple casting of a spell. If this comment gets enough likes or the outlaw responds I’ll post my build and challenge him and others to make a higher base AC at Lvl 1.
Playing a Tabaxi, Kensei Monk with the Pirate background, right now and I'm getting ready to dip into Rogue and go Swashbuckler. He's been pretty fun so far. Hey offbeat. Real quick the dnd sessions that u do on twitch are awesome however bc of work i miss alot of them do u no if i can watch the ones i missed anywhere else
You can ignore the quarterstaff if you take Unarmed Fighter as your fighting style. You do 1d6 for unarmed attacks (1d8 if you have no armor or shield, as a monk why would you). This will allow you to start the the fight attacking instead of casting a cantrip and then waiting for the next turn to attack. Also grapple the target. Technically if you grapple the target you can attack them with your astral arms, all with advantage since they are prone. Your fighting style also allows you to do 1d4 damage to a grappled target at the start of your turn. Also Unarmed Strike. Let’s you do an unarmed strike (due) with your bonus action. So that would be a total of 9 attacks. I don’t think you mentioned that, or I did not hear it.
actually if you spec into Wizard/Mage genie Subclass up to lvl 3 you can use a spell to materialize a small item in your hands which includes the ring of 3 wish's which if i remember correctly give rule free wish's. meaning you could have anything from a Gorgon for a mount all the way down to Fist Attacks that you roll a D-20 for or even Add additional hit's to certain abillity's or change the stat that a class's attacks use like making a skaflaw fighter's attacks run on the same stat as Way of 4 Element's Monk Path of Water thus you effectively combine Scaflaw fighter and 4 Element's Monk Perfectly while getting all their Separate ability's to function on the exact same stat for damage and so on. in other words.... All Thing's Are Possible Through Our Lord and Savior The Ring of 3 Wish's.
Are you casting "Hunters Mark" Outside of combat? One could argue that when you cast "Hunters Mark" that signifies the "...first round (start of) combat..." which Dread Ambusher says is the only time you can use it. If that is true, then you can't use "Flurry of blows" because it is a Bonus action and you used that for "Hunter's Mark"... Thoughts? (Note a "Surprise" round is the "first" round of combat... same things apply)
There’s no such thing as a surprise round in 5e, surprise is a condition. If you cast it prior to rolling initiative then combat has not officially started. Combat starts once initiative has been rolled.
Is it RAW that fists are weapons for monks for the hunter's mark interaction? I thought I saw a Crawford tweet on that not working, which was my understanding as well. My version of this similar build uses Hex for that reason.
I did an echo knight fighter/shadow monk goblin at 20 i was able to do a huge turn of 7 attacks Action surge attack through my echo i was all over the battlefield
the only reason you shouldn't add 2 levels in fighter is if you're going wizard and you're expecting to reach levels 18-20, in which case don't multiclass at all
Or Druid, if you think you’ll get to Level 20. Because you’ll get infinite Wild Shape, and thus be effectively unkillable, especially if you’re a Moon Druid.
While I do love the Nova potential of this build, couldn't this be optimized further in terms of pure damage just by taking Shillelagh as part of the Druidic Warrior Fighting style from the Ranger (optional class feature from TCoE, same source as Astral Self Monk) and taking another feat as part of Variant Human?

I prefer to multiclass Monk and Barbadian. 11 Monk and 9 Barbarian feels like the ideal ratio. I like to switch around subclasses, but so far Totem Warrior and Kensei seem to have best synergy. Though Sun Soul and Storm Herald were a fun combo too.
Offbeat Outlaw:
How to play a monk.
- Shillelagh
- Hunter's mark
- Astral self
So finally be turn 4 you can start utilizing your extra martial arts attack you get from monk as a bonus action.
I'm sad because this session 0 starts at 2 am for me
ikr it hurts
It’s going to be a podcast as well!! More info soon 😁
@@OffbeatOutlaw ow nice
If you start at level 7, you can take another feat or race, since Rangers now have the druidic warrior fighting style.
Almost always go for that final monk subclass feature.
If you were using Tasha's then you could do more damage if you have a long sword and use the Dedicated Weapon ability, if you do that and you hold the long sword with two hands then you'll be doing an extra +2 to damage per attack than with a quarter staff, sine it only does a d8 with two hands
Monk fighter multicalss- astral brute! Absolutely terrifying!
I’m so excited to watch you cause I have school on Monday
Just the intro made the video deserve a like
I made a tiefling (zariel) college of whispers bard and swashbuckler rogue multiclass once
We were at level ten and I had taken 5 levels in each, for the asi’s I chose metamagic adept and warlock magic innate
It was very fun to play
In my experience, Monk can multiclass beautifully with Rogue for that sweet sweet stealth and movement speed.
Zephyr Strike might be a choice for more ZOOMING and better damage than Hunter's Mark, but both are good choices.
I love this man
😎
Did you not hear the part where I said literally every part of your comment, even saying “it’s unlikely”?
Rock a ten foot tall, thousand pound grizzly bear that has a 20 ac and can land: 6x2d6 claws
2x1d10 bites
8x1d6 hex
5x1d8 superiority dice
+40 in one round at level ten
Sounds like making a ninja... NINJA GO!!!!
Wildshape merely says you cant cast spells it says nothing about not being able to use arms of astral self and flurry of blows as a 9ft tall grizzly bear
that ending dude, wow
GS ranger is the standout ranger subclass for sure. 3lvl GS, 2fighter can fit in a bunch of builds.
I will not leave. You have delicious food and now I live here. Also we are out of toilet paper.
Also I drank the milk so we need some of that too
Are there and chips left?
some stale Cool Ranch Doritos. Owww but he does have little chocolates in this side cupboard!
I’m well aware of the toilet paper, ‘tis your punishment 😈
Its okay we have all these paper towels.
It’s almost as if I acknowledge that in the build, that setting this all up is extremely unlikely 🙃
This is a weird build and I love it.
FINALLY hunters mark
A good example of a good monk/ranger multiclass: Blade from Marvel Comics.
Digging the Persona music at the end
Can you take the druidic fighter for the Shillelagh and take some other feat for variant human? I was thinking skill expert to boost that dex and you can take one more feat or raise your wis to 20 if point by.
My dragonborn way of the dragon monk is most definitely a damage dealer, she's level sixteen able to making between 10 and 18 breath attacks (ki dependent) before needing to rest. She's also able to make 2 breath attacks per turn
That doesn't mean she's a *good* damage dealer. Dragon monk is also pretty weak.
Astral self monk and Echo Knight combine to become Kankuro. And it is so hard land a hit on them.
Monks.
Ah anecdotal evidence with homebrew, and magic items that are specific to your game. Very compelling
See I have a similar build.
5 echo knight
3 gloom stalker
2 barb.
Level 10. 8 attacks first round with a two handed weapon with advantage. Great weapon master and mobile for feats.
At level 11 I take ranger 4 and get the alert feat. 2 levels of druid spore. Then the rest fighter. It has been a blast to play. Hit and run you are not tanking in this class
day 2 of asking for the * S P E E D* built
other youtubers have done it, monk tabaxi with haste on them or smth, so tabaxi any monk + bladesinger wizard cuz they also get a speed boost. something like that
@@AliceEverglade and mobile feat
How to become the flash in dnd:
Centaur barbarian/monk. done.
You can use a feat to get it at level 1 as a human or custom lineage then swap out the feat for a different fighting style once u gain monk d8 fisting
@@trappyboi8678 As far as I'm aware, "swapping feats" isn't a thing in 5e. Apparently it was in 4e, but in 5e, once you take a feat, you're stuck with that. Unless a DM declares mercy on the poor player who took Keen Mind as an exception. (Or rules at your table can be whatever you want, but rules as written, that feat is with you for the duration of playing that character.
@@macenanoro826 The Martial Initiate feat specifies that you can change the fighting style you chose at first whenever you get an Ability Score Improvement or feat again.
This makes the ranger main in me hapoy
Are there magic initiate equivalent feats for Ranger spells or Paladin spells? For instance, I know you can choose the Hex spell with Fey Touched because Hex is considered an Enchantment spell. Basically, I'm trying to get Hunter's mark for my monk without multi-classing. I can use all the books but I can't multi-class in my next campaign. We are starting from Level 1.
Plate armor + shield + shield of faith = 18 + 2 + 2 = 22 AC
@@gabrielseller6434 at Lvl 1 a clerics starting amour doesn’t give you the option to choose plate amour.
@@lachlansouthern3298 sure but there’s nothing stopping any cleric from acquiring such armour, appart from prohibitive cost perhaps
Playing a Tabaxi, Kensei Monk with the Pirate background, right now and I'm getting ready to dip into Rogue and go Swashbuckler. He's been pretty fun so far. Gonna take the Defensive Duelist Feat at some point. Should make me pretty darn hard to hit and help me keep more of my Ki points since I won't have to use them to disengage.
Hey offbeat. Real quick the dnd sessions that u do on twitch are awesome however bc of work i miss alot of them do u no if i can watch the ones i missed anywhere else
Check out the Six Idiots INC youtube channel! The channel is linked on this youtube channel
Best Monk build Ever!
Can you try to make a minimaxed healer?
This
Prob a coffeelock
This please
Lmao you don’t need to heal if you deal 500 damage in one turn
Hey. Love your content. I feel like I should let you know this. Cam wobble is painful to my eyes! Thank you. Keep up the good work.
Sorry!! I’ll try and fix it for future episodes! Thanks you letting me know 😁
monk+rogue is nice, because ninjas and all~
You can ignore the quarterstaff if you take Unarmed Fighter as your fighting style.
He doesnt get access to a fighting style, so mage initiate with shillelagh also gives him access to a magic weapon
actually if you spec into Wizard/Mage genie Subclass up to lvl 3 you can use a spell to materialize a small item in your hands which includes the ring of 3 wish's which if i remember correctly give rule free wish's.
meaning you could have anything from a Gorgon for a mount all the way down to Fist Attacks that you roll a D-20 for or even Add additional hit's to certain abillity's or change the stat that a class's attacks use like making a skaflaw fighter's attacks run on the same stat as Way of 4 Element's Monk Path of Water thus you effectively combine Scaflaw fighter and 4 Element's Monk Perfectly while getting all their Separate ability's to function on the exact same stat for damage and so on.
in other words....
All Thing's Are Possible Through Our Lord and Savior The Ring of 3 Wish's.
There is no genie wizard. The genie warlock cannot use there feature to summon magic items. Much less a legendary item.
Thoughts on a Shadow Monk/Twilight Cleric MC?
Imma just look at Druid and Clerics multi with Monks.....
As someone Playing a Bonk(barbarian Monk) and kicking ass with it i will disagree on monk multiclassing
But it does need some love thoug. Preciate it.
Not bad bro.
I love your content
Thanks!
Also missed 2d8 from dread ambusher
I don't play Monk to play another class. I play Monk to run at mach speeds and do drive by stunning strikes, and beat up ghosts with my _bare hands._
What did you do to the bare to get it's hands?
I’m in a dnd group with a ranger and thanks to hunters Mark the ranger is the hardest hitter in the group, and funnily enough I’m playing a monk
i do love your intros
Thank you 😎
Aren't both flurry of blows and hunters mark a bonus action meaning you only get one or the other on your first turn
This is assuming you have a chance to cast hunter's mark before initiative is rolled
@@isaiahnaylor9862 oh ok
If you have an extra level go with echo knight for an extra attack as an action
I keep trying to find a fighter monk that works with way of the fist to just go for a small race and do the punch 15ft up trick 😊
See I just don't cross into other classes and go mono monk
Can you try make a build with a very high speed
Hunters mark is requires a weapon attack. Unarmed fists, while not melee weapons, are weapons and thus activate hunters mark
Also Crawford is the one who gave me this explanation
@@OffbeatOutlaw Nice, I thought I saw the opposite, but that's super cool.
Hex is the one that can’t activate with fist weapons, hunters mark read slightly different
@@OffbeatOutlaw Wait, what? That makes no sense. Hex reads as bonus damage whenever you make an attack, why wouldn't it apply to unarmed attacks?
My man took druid magic initiate and chose healing word over goodberry. Dude.
You could have gotten cantrips through druidic warrior fighting style and have another feat
I did an echo knight fighter/shadow monk goblin at 20 i was able to do a huge turn of 7 attacks Action surge attack through my echo i was all over the battlefield
Astral Self Monk?
Do you mean "JoJo Stand user?"
Shillelagh, Hunters Mark & Flurry of Blows are all bonus actions really doubt you could have all of them for the 1st round of combat.
the only reason you shouldn't add 2 levels in fighter is if you're going wizard and you're expecting to reach levels 18-20, in which case don't multiclass at all
Or Druid, if you think you’ll get to Level 20. Because you’ll get infinite Wild Shape, and thus be effectively unkillable, especially if you’re a Moon Druid.
He forgot 2d8 from dread ambusher lol
While I do love the Nova potential of this build, couldn't this be optimized further in terms of pure damage just by taking Shillelagh as part of the Druidic Warrior Fighting style from the Ranger (optional class feature from TCoE, same source as Astral Self Monk) and taking another feat as part of Variant Human?
Potentially, though I wanted this build to be online by level 5 somewhat as that is the level this game starts at
Not sure what level your starting at but if it is 7 or higher I would use the druidic fighting style and you could use that feat for something else.
Level 5
