    Wiki:
The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad is a 1949 American animated anthology film produced by Walt Disney Productions and released by RKO Radio Pictures. It consists of two segments: the first based on Kenneth Grahame's 1908 children's novel The Wind in the Willows and narrated by Basil Rathbone, and the second based on Washington Irving's 1820 short story The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and narrated by Bing Crosby. The production was supervised by Ben Sharpsteen, and was directed by Jack Kinney, Clyde Geronimi, and James Algar.
The film began development in 1940 as a single-narrative, full-length feature based on The Wind in the Willows. After a series of production delays, the project was cut down to a short film and eventually merged with The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, which also began production as a full-length feature, into a package film in 1947. The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad is the last of the studio's package film era of the 1940s, following Saludos Amigos (1942), The Three Caballeros (1944), Make Mine Music (1946), Fun and Fancy Free (1947), and Melody Time (1948); they returned to full-length animated films starting with Cinderella in 1950.[2] Disney would not produce another package film until The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (1977).
    Plot (IMDB):
Two stories. The Wind in the Willows: Concise version of Kenneth Grahame's story of the same name. J. Thaddeus Toad, owner of Toad Hall, is prone to fads, such as the newfangled motor car. This desire for the very latest lands him in much trouble with the wrong crowd, and it is up to his friends, Mole, Rat and Badger to save him from himself. - The Legend of Sleepy Hollow: Retelling of Washington Irving's story set in a tiny New England town. Ichabod Crane, the new schoolmaster, falls for the town beauty, Katrina Van Tassel, and the town Bully Brom Bones decides that he is a little too successful and needs "convincing" that Katrina is not for him.

I need to type a few words of appreciation for J. Pat O'Malley, the voice of Cyril Proudbottom. He had a long career as a character actor, and he leant his voice talents to quite a few Disney films, including Alice in Wonderland, 101 Dalmatians, and The Jungle Book. Interestingly, he started his career as a pop singer in the early 1930s.

At long last after a full year you finally finished with the Package feature films. Looking forward to the Silver Age films and your reaction to _Cinderella_
Honestly the film’s legacy is interesting because in recent years especially in the United States most folks especially Disney and its official fan club website D23 seem to mostly talk about _The Sleepy Hollow_ segment from the film moreso than _The Wind in the Willows_ segment due to the darker themes, the Headless Horseman and the singing vocals of Bing Crosby. Even during the 70th anniversary of the film, the Top 5 facts featured on D23 for the film has been largely relegated to you guessed it…. _Sleepy Hollow_ instead of _Wind in the Willows_
It’s just like how the _Mickey and the Beanstalk_ segment from _Fun and Fancy Free_ was the segment everyone remember moreso than the _Bongo_ segment.

For the longest time, I thought Ichabod was the good guy. Truth is, while he's the protagonist of the story, he's low-key kind of a villain, only wanting to marry Katrina for her wealth and titles.
Edit: I read somewhere that in the story, Katrina wasn't at all attracted to Ichabod, and only flirted with him to make Brom jealous.
Whether that makes her a villain is up for debate, especially depending on the adaptation. The original story deliberately kept many things vague for people to speculate on.

The handful of times when they've been accurate about Ichabod Crane's character - too easy to think it's the story of the nerd in love with he girlfriend of the guy who bullies him...when in fact.....while Brom (don't get me wrong) is arrogant, a show-off, boastful, and perhaps too fond of pranks, though you still get the feeling to shrug a say "yeah....he's ok", and Katrina is the local flirt whose had too much of her own way and has never learned to stop and think about her actions (her dad gives into her and her mum spends too much time taking care of her ducks and geese - her philosophy is 'ducks and geese are silly creatures that need looking after but girls can take care of themselves'), Ichabod Crane is vain, cowardly, self-centred, greedy, gluttonous, a total kiss-up, selfish and haughty who always shows off his own talents and actually looks down on the people of sleepy hollow because he's from the city.
He thinks he's a cultured dandy and the people of sleepy hollow think so as well because they don't know many people from the city. And he's definitely mostly interested in Katrina because of all the food her farm can provide him or could buy for him, and he imagines the day when he could sneer at anyone who called him 'schoolmaster' or at any other schoolteacher who came to town who'd address him as one of their own.

so for some context for you two in case you didn't know.
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is a folktale Washington Irving wrote while he lived in Birmingham, Britain, that is partial inspired by folklore about a man killed in battle that lost his head and now wanders the woods at night looking for his lost head/victims to replace his missing head. Irving used a German Hessian from the American Revolutionary War as there were battles in the area New York City is now.
In the context of Irving's story, Ichabod Crane is a bit of a jerk and a golddigger who lands in Sleepy Hollow to be a teacher but knows how to schmooze free food out of people. He and Brom Bones both are competing for Katrina van Tassel because she's rich and she eggs them to spite Brom Bones. Then on the night of the party, Brom tells the story of the Horseman because Crane is also very superstitious and afraid of his own shadow at times. That night, Ichabod proposed to Katrina who told him no so Ichabod left in a huff. While riding home he meets a strange black figure on a horse without a head who chases him to the bridge and stops (folklore being ghosts can't cross running) and chucks a pumpkin at Ichabod. the next morning, they find the horse and a smashed pumpkin but no Ichabod, Brom Bones when asks (and the story in the subtext makes it look like it was a prank by him to scare Ichabod out of town) merely shrugs and goes the Horseman got him. The Disney version (and others) imply the Horseman was a real ghost the whole time who killed Ichabod hence the scene where Ichabod looks down the Horseman's neck and freaks out.

Watching this (yes, a second time after Ko-fi) called up a buried memory that we did a dramatized version of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (like about 20 minutes, at a school assembly) when I was in 7th grade, long long ago. Though I was already tall, I was passed over for Ichabod. 😆I was just a townsperson. I was also part of the team that helped make our minimal scenery.

Yeah, in this movie it's pretty clear that Katrina's just using Ichabod to make Brom jealous. It was all but confirmed in the book. Some depict it as she thought he was too confident that he'd gotten her and wanted to make him sweat a bit, some reckon she was getting tired of waiting for him to ask her to marry him and that this was her way of either saying "Are you going to propose or not?" or "if you won't then maybe I'll just go and marry someone else, what do you think of that?", some depict her as mostly just being annoyed that everyone in town had assumed that she would marry him when he hadn't even asked her, some depict it as a case of her liking Ichabod's different manner of flirting with her (more courtly than the loud sweeping off her feet style Brom had) and didn't get he was only interested in her father's money and is feeling conflicted because she loves Prom though she doesn't think he takes her or their relationship seriously because he just announces or assumes things rather than asking her.

44:29 He just HAD to stop the horse and look around, didn't he?

  • @agenttheater5
    @agenttheater5 3 місяці тому +2

On the one hand, Brom has a similar height and build to the horseman, and is the best horse rider for miles around, plus as he grew up int hat area he knows it well and could probably make that ride in the dark. He could just be skilled enough with a. sword to aim and deliberately miss at Icahbod's head, and we know he's fond of a prank - not meaning to kill Ichabod, just to scare him off.
On the other hand, no one could make that leap that the Headless Horseman made, and there is Ichabod looking into the cloak nd seeing nothing.
Though by that stage he'd probably gotten himself so worked up, who knows what he actually saw?
In the book people did notice that Brom would tend to smile to himself whenever Ichabod was mentioned and to laugh whenever the pumpkin was mentioned. And we actually had an eye-witness in the book who had gone to New York briefly for business who said that Icahbod was alive and doing really well (was a judge or something like that), and the horse was fine as well.
But a schoolteacher being spirited away by a ghost.......it just makes a better story than a schoolteacher who was frightened by a prank and ran away.

@EdizAndBen I found it once, but it was really convincing to me.
In the song, Headless Horseman is said to be the worst on Halloween night. It's is possible that's is Jack Skelliton before he became Pumpkin King. Plus, Ichabod managed to get a peek inside the Headless Horseman. If it would would've been Brom, Ichabod would've realized that it is a prank, but instead, he freaked out more.
And if you have time, check the video of Jack's lament. In it, he stops between two cravestone, which are... a man's and horse's.
I may be wrong, but to me, it's pretty convincing
