Why The Muppets Timeline Makes NO SENSE.

- I love the Muppets, they're films are incredibly charming and hilarious, but a while back I decided to rewatch all the films, where I realized that the timeline to these films makes ZERO SENSE. Enjoy as I go utterly insane trying to understand the lore to the funny puppet movies.

As a muppet superfan who has spent their entire existence learning aboyt muppet history and lore, most muppet movies are simply the muppet performers telling a story. They may be slightly based on real events, but only slightly. The only thing that is actually canon is the backstage scenes of the original muppet show.

The Muppets don't have a timeline, the premise of their movies is that they're a troupe of actors and they make movies.
The best way to look at the Muppet "canon" is to remember that the Muppets are actors and all the movies are still movies in-universe, but some of them are loosely based on the Muppets' real lives.
Kermit's line to Robin in the original Muppet movie explains it best, "it's sort of approximately how it happened."
No mention of the line in "We're doing a Sequel...:
"I don't mean to be a stickler
But this is the SEVENTH sequel to our original motion picture"

Like Kermit said in the first movie, it's approximately what happened, also Gonzo and Rizzo were gonna do the role of Jim Hawkins in Treasure Island with Gonzo being Jim and Rizzo being Hawkins but they felt the lead role was too serious for Muppets so they made them Jim's sidekicks and you forgot to mention that in Muppets Most Wanted, Sam the Eagle acted like a complete stranger to the other Muppets
Did you miss the opening song of Great Muppet Caper? It's literally called "Hey, A Movie!" and they all talk about how they're about to be in the movie that you're going to see. I don't understand how that's any different than "We're Doing a Sequel." As a matter of fact, it seems like "Sequel" is directly inspired by the opening of Caper.
Why do yoi think frog dissection in this universe is weird but not the fact that the main villan of The Muppet Movie wanted Kermit to advertise his frog leg restaurant?
I always just assumed that in all the movies, the Muppets were just acting as themselves in movies within movies and in reality they live relatively normal lives as Hollywood actors and showrunners
The reason Gonzo goes by his own name in Muppet Treasure Island while Kermit doesn't is because Kermit is playing a character from the book (Captain Smollett). Gonzo's character has no book equivalent, therefore, his own name is used to fill in the gap.
I usally don’t comment this but I legitimately think this is one of the most entertaining videos I’ve watched this year.

There is no timeline or canon to the Muppets. The whole idea of the Muppets is that they are real-life actors who make movies and TV shows about themselves. None of their films are “canon” or 100% based on “real events” that happened to them, they’re just movies that the Muppets starred in. Kermit, Miss Piggy, Gonzo, and the rest of the cast are only actors in these productions-Kermit and Fozzie aren’t twins, Kermit and Piggy were never really married, and Gonzo isn’t an alien.
You said that Muppets Most Wanted is the first time where they show you at everything you just watched is a movie. But that happens in the first Muppet movie by showing the premiere and the studio lot. It also happens EXPLICITLY in Great Muppet Caper. The entire opening credit sequence they're in the hot air balloon commenting on the credits themselves. And then the entire first song is called "Hey a Movie" where they sing about the movie you're about to see. We're Doing a Sequel is actually a reference to that song.
I love that every Muppet movie is a movie in the Muppets' canon, so that's sort of the explanation for everything. And also, some movies are actually movies about events that really happened in canon, like The Muppets (2011) and Muppets Most Wanted, making it even more confusing, but honestly great
every movie post- The Muppet Movie up until The Muppets but including Most Wanted is a movie the muppets made, obviously. I haven’t watched the video yet maybe you figured that out

The 2011 movie is also a movie they made. You see them wrapping on that film in the opening of Most Wanted.

There is no Muppet timeline or lore. Each show and movie is set in its own separate timeline. Heck! The first three movies are about the characters meeting each other for the first time.
The only ones that are together is the 2010 Muppets and Muppets Most Wanted but that's cause they actually call it a sequel

Some of the movies are either movies in the muppets universe *OR*
Each movie takes place in their own universe.
The Muppets from space and the two follow ups that take place roughly 60 years after "The Muppet Movie" are cannon and while "The Muppet Christmas Carol" and "Muppet Treasure Island" were more like side projects of Brian Henson in memory of Jim Henson, so they do not count as in-universe Muppet timeline cannon. I wish "The Muppets at Disney World" was made into a DVD, it was my second favorite to "The Muppets Take Manhattan".
A copy of Muppets from Space is on Walter's TV in The Muppets (2011).

@@nathanielvaughn6728; I am confused by your reply because I know that "Muppets From Space" was made into a VHS and DVD, I just don't understand why everyone has forgotten that there was a tv film special called "Muppets at Disney World", it used to come on t.v. during the summer in the noon-time hours and it hasn't aired since 1999 that is why I say that I wish they had made "The Muppets at Disney World" into a DVD. It is great that we still remember "The Christmas Toy (Muppets)" and it is on streaming and it was older than "The Muppets at Disney World".
The first half of my response was because your initial comment stated that Muppets from Space and Muppets 2011 were BOTH canon, when the presence of the DVD copy would indicate that it's just a movie in the 2011 world. The second half was meant to acknowledge the futility of having a real "canon" in this franchise to begin with.
Also yes, The Muppets at Walt Disney World should absolutely be made more available than it is, as should many other Muppet specials.

Im surprised you didn't mention the fact that, in Muppets Most Wanted, Dominic literally tells Kermit what direction to take the movie by suggesting they go on a world tour. Meaning he influenced the plot of the movie they're making so he can fulfill his evil plan... in the movie they're making(?)

It's not your fault cause you probably don't know The Muppets that well, but the whole thing about The Muppets is that they're performing. They are a group of performers that act in all those different movies. The characters you see in the movies aren't the same in every single movie, they're playing characters

It's not fan theory. The Muppets mention in multiple interviews that every Muppet movie is just them acting, that's also why every movie mention they're in a movie. Also they've mentioned for years they 'play themselves' in movies also yes...they are puppets and can be made aware of that but usually forget that until the need for a joke except for Kermit

I recently watched every muppet movie in release order, so this is perfect timing
You left out Muppets Haunted Mansion.
I can't tell if you actually watched all the Muppet movies or just said you did. The Great Muppet Caper opens with a song called "Hey a Movie!", so no Most Wanted isn't the first time that they looked directly in the camera and said they were making a movie. The entire introduction was the set falling apart around them because the muppets often have set issues. It's not subtle that almost every Muppet media we watch outside of the show is them putting on a performance.
Why call-out Treasure Island for having Gonzo as Gonzo, when Rizzo played himself in the previous film. He is literally Rizzo the rat in Muppets Christmas Carol. Actors playing themselves for comedic effect is something we see all the time. The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent had Nicolas Cage as himself with everyone else playing characters.
As for the canon timeline, the Muppets are real life actors. That's it. The Muppets made the Muppets show, then made the Muppets movies and every other adaptation. You could argue that the original show 1976-1981 is the only cannon thing along with them in the theater watching said movie. Everything else is a Muppets production with the actors. If you want to get meta with the 2011 movie it's easy to believe that it's a retelling of actual events. So Walter is real in the Muppets timeline, and they thought his story of reuniting them was so good they had to make a movie about it.
It also just feels like a missed opportunity in a video like this not to mention that Kermit's existence caused 911
I’m currently working on a video where I rank every muppet movie, and yeah, I can confirm THERE IS A LOT of muppet media out there! It’s tiring to sit and watch all of these movies, and make a whole video on top of it, but this has been a pretty fun video for me to make. When you were talking about how challenging it was in the beginning to watch all of them, I was like, I feel your pain bro! 🥲
Were the movies even supposed to have a timeline? I mean, to be fair, they're just fictional. Maybe you're overthinking it, although they really should've stopped after the 2011 movie. The Muppets Most Wanted just ruined the illusion of the previous one: They made a movie about Walter wanting to meet his idols, and wanting to be part of the cast, and the sequel just unraveled the whole thing, by showing us how said movie was made. Also, the song, "We're Doing a Sequel" had Dr. Bunsen Honeydew remarking that The Muppets Most Wanted was their 7th sequel, to their original movie, which meant that making a sequel was unoriginal. Otherwise, you can't really take these movies too seriously.

The way I look at Muppet Movie lore:
The Muppet Movie (1979): This is a movie created by the Muppets meant to illustrate their origin story, in a rough and inaccurate way.
The Great Muppet Caper: A Movie created by the Muppets simply to tell a story. No canon lore.
The Muppets Take Manhattten: The Muppets want to make a movie about the struggles of making a broadway production. When trying to propose this idea, they face real hardships that hinder the production. In my eyes, this sort of explains the weird college aspect along with other lore contradictions, while also explaining why the muppets are themselves and go through realish drama. My big issue with this movie it feels real and not, making its emotional moments feel alomst pointless. Still a fav of mine though despite being confusing af.
Christmas Carol: Movie being performed by Muppets no lore
Treasure Island: Refer to Christmas Carol
Muppets From Space: The Muppets, being broke af, had to buy a house to continue their muppet stuff. Kermit, being overwhelmed with keeping up the house and trying to set up another muppet production, hands the creative control to Gonzo to make another muppet movie. Gonzo then made Muppets from space, and everyone decided to just go with it, being out of options.
Muppets (2011): After Gonzo f'd the muppets with his movie, they were forced to split up since no one wanted to do anything with them. Walter and his brother (I forgot his name), go to Disney to pitch their idea for another muppet movie, being the 2011 movie. Disney then said they would make the movie if the brothers got the muppets back together. The brothers did this, and the movie, much like the first one, is a rough illustration of this creation process and the plot with the evil oil barren was what the brother's movie was going to be about.
Muppets Most Wanted: After the 2011 profit, Disney wanted more. I'd imagine when trying to create the movie, they were struggling for ideas, which is what created

This is a super interesting take on the timeline ngl. Honestly, the whole point of this video was that although you can cover every movie up with the “it’s a movie” excuse or “there is no timeline”, it ultimately creates the issue that you legitimately never know if what you’re watching should be taken seriously or not. That’s why personally, Muppets 2011 and the original movie are my favorites as they legitimately set things straight what is what. No hate towards this franchise tho, as the other movies are still super fun, just a bit more “turn off your brain”.
