The Tragedy of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man

- In this video, I dive deep into my favorite marvel movie, Spider-Man 2. I delve into the depression and anxiety the titular hero faces because of his sacrifices and choices. This movie is one of the greatest character-centered superhero stories, and it is no surprise it has the critical acclaim it deserves. I was 7 years old when I watched this movie for the first time, and back then, I only cared about the special effects and the action, but as I've gotten older, I've come to appreciate the moral dilemmas Peter faces throughout the movie. He struggles to balance everyday life with his crime-fighting alter ego and the pressures put on him. I hope to give you a new perspective on this movie and hope you rewatch it with unique insight on the dilemmas a found favorite hero faces.
Summary: Spider-Man 2 (2004)
Following the first movie's events, Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) has to sort out his responsibilities between being the masked hero and just your average guy. With constant stress entering his life, like unwanted sacrifices, Peter is starting to lose his powers in dire situations. So when a former mentor turned sociopath Doc Ock (Alfred Molina), comes seeking power, Peter has to figure out how to stop him.

IF YOU'RE READING THIS, YOU'RE AMAZING!
Relatable man with relatable problems but what makes him spiderman is his understanding of responsibility with having abilities not many have. Peter discovering his self worth and identity to regain his powers is brilliant.
Exactly! Well said
Spider-Man 2 literally tells that having superpowers isn't all fun and games
Exactly
Ehh he mostly without his superpower which isn't all fun and games
Nah fuck no without his powers he would be a nobody
men not really. Only if you use your super powers in the most selfless way, which is what Peter was doing.
You know how Po's motto from Kung Fun Panda is "there is no secret ingredient"? Peter embodies that to the fullest. In that scene where he saves that little girl from the fire, he doesn't even hesitate to go in there. He never needed that radioactive venom to become a hero, he already was one.
Po: "There is no secret ingredient, it's just you."
@aaronpablos760 what about James Hong?
@Aaron Pablos Me when voice actors voice act: 😧
"He never needed that radioactive venom to become a hero, he already was one"
Wow. That is just beautiful. Tears.
Toby is definitely the most relatable of all the 3 peters which is why I love him so much.
I agree ‼️
@@DyliciousTakesme too
Only Tobey is Relatable? But they are all Peter
@@FazeRustyNuts there written differently. Andrew was more of a cool kid on a skateboard so he wouldn’t be considered a looser in high school and Tom was just an ordinary kid in school. Toby was the most relatable of the 3 when it comes to being in high school.
The Sam Raimi Spider-Man trilogy is the gold standard that will never be topped, all three movies are masterpieces.
@@duduvenom Nope. You are wrong
Your opinion is garbage
@Aaron Pablos Um....................no
@Aaron Pablos Spider-Man 3 was GOOD. It's even better than both The Amazing Spider-Man movies.
@@duduvenom nah it wasnt by any means. People hate on it mostly because how it treated venom and their high expectarions because of spiderman 2. So most people not knowing about the movie gauge it on the opinion of people who hated the treatment of venom as they didnt get what they wanted from the iconic comic book villain.
The great thing about Sam Raimi Spiderman, even if you take those Superhero theme, you'll still got a good story about a guy who struggling in his life, watching his loved one having relationship with his best friend, and try the best he can do
A lot of people talk about Andrews redemption arc in no way home him catching MJ and it fixing his whole, catching Gwen mistake. But nobody really talks about Toby‘s redemption arc. Some thing I love about his character is his was the most rigorous exploration of responsibility, and what it means as a hero. Toby has regarded the death of the goblin as his greatest failure for 20 years. That’s why he still thinking about a cure. That’s why it’s still something in his mind because he always believed that everyone gets saved even the villain that’s one of things that makes Spider-Man special, his naïve, black and white view of no you save everyone no matter what, with great power great responsibility is with drives, the great morality of his character. When Toby created that cure when he stopped Tom from killing goblin, that was his catching MJ. He never really regarding the goblin as a true villain. He was just another lost soul needing saving so to speak.
Honestly, I think Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire’s take on the character can actually be seen as an improvement on comic book Peter Parker/Spider-Man. The guy in the comic book is nerdy, sure, but he’s also hot-tempered, jaded, and at times little cocky (both in and outside of the mask). He’s more antagonistic from what we remember. His arc is learning how to become a better person through being a superhero.
Maguire’s Peter Parker is much more of a sympathetic character. He’s a shy romantic guy who takes his bad luck on the chin while trying to balance his life of service with keeping the love of his life. We don’t see him constantly complain about how terrible he has it, instead the movies show us his day-to-day struggle and we empathize with him
Exactly, Tobey is not a whiny little baby with his circumstances.
My favorite description of these movies is that if you step away the action and all the fun superhero Spider-Man us, you’re still stuck with a genuinely good movie about a man navigating relatable problems in life, trying to understand things like sacrifice and commitment and honor
Exactly
Truthful asf...I can't relate to any of the other spiderman movies except tobi maguire's.💯🚫🧢
I think this is the best movie analysis I have seen for Spiderman 2 and in only 10 minutes, your wording and how you depict it makes other movie analysis's for this film that take an hour go to shame, great work!
Thanks man! I want to get my points across in a manner that’s not overstuffed but concise! Glad you enjoyed!
I have to say, they really missed the opportunity to make MJ’s ex fiance the next Venom. Instead it was Brock, and yeah they did follow the comics but, I think the story would have been cooler especially with the pent up anger from the ex fiance, especially since he’s an astronaut and storyline would have flowed just right.
Honestly that’s pretty cool
8:49 that is what exactly happening rn in the MCU. you did a great job, perfectly analysing the Spiderman character
This film will always be a masterpiece
For sure
This video is so well made, it sums up how great Spider-Man 2 is
I don't know where I heard it, but I saw someone sum up why the Raimi trilogy is so perfect because it takes the famous Uncle Ben phrase and derives new phrases that encapsulates each movie in the trilogy.
Spiderman 1 - "With great power, comes great responsibility"
Spiderman 2 - "With great responsibility, comes great sacrifice"
Spiderman 3 - "With great power, comes great ego/arrogance/corruption"
And the best part is in Spider-Man 3 Peter sacrifices were rewarded everyone in new York City loves him when I watched Peter say "they love me" i genuinely was happy for him he has a whole city that got his back
How has this not blown up yet?! You've managed to put so much of why I adore and resonate with this movie into words, and I appreciate it! I've grown up on Spider-Man 2, seen it more times than I can count, but it still has me coming back because of all the things you said. Furthermore, despite all those rewatches, it feels like I've still picked up on something new here, with this video. Amazing work!!!
This movie is amazing and one of my favorites of all time. I’m glad you enjoyed man! Share it around if you can!
It's a good video, but honestly, it's praising an already critically-acclaimed movie that's nearly 20 years ago. That's why.
The reasoning is sound though. I hate it when people put nonsense analyses out their butts and it gets tons of views.
@@DyliciousTakesfacts our childhood spider man movie 🕷🕸 spidey da 🐐
I think the first fight with doc ock Aunty may knew Peter was Spiderman
i think so too
The best reviews so far, my first and favorite superhero is Tobie's Spiderman. The lack of relatability the one thing holds me back from watching today's superhero movies (mcu).
I also have to say that I still believe the single greatest scene and line in any superhero movie ever is ironically the most boring scene in Spider-Man two. When aunt Mae gives the speech about what hero is, and what it means to give up the things you want the most, even your dreams are in order to do what’s right. That was the absolute pinnacle, a superhero television and we have not gotten anything even close to it since. The nuances of the scene where Toby catches the glider before Tom can kill the goblin comes close.
Sam Raimi is the only guy who can make kids like a superhero movie that barely has a superhero in it, I rewatched it recently and I was surprised how much it lacked in the aspect of action and some obvious humour but kids all over the world fell in love with this movie, truly a masterpiece
Before No Way Home, i couldn't make up my mind on which Spider-Man movie i loved the most. But thanks to No Way Home, i can cherish it for a very long time. Tobey, Andrew and Tom are all perfect Spidermen.
No Way Home was the perfect theater experience
@@DyliciousTakes and Secret Wars will top everything in 2026.
@@kristelvidhi5038 marvel had its time, I think No Way Home solidified its peak
@@DyliciousTakes i don't think so and No Way Home is only the third best after Infinity War and Endgame.
8:57 exactly what the superhero genre is missing
Who ever decided to get evil dead Sam Rami to direct Spider-Man was a genius, his style works so well with it. Really wish we could get more spider from him (not MCU edgeless overly controlled Rami, real Rami given free reign to make his thing)
Facts!
why does this man not have more subs!?!? this is great! keep up the great vids. only suggestion, if funds are available, louder mic quality would be great. other then that, dont change a thing. this is awesome.
Thanks so much man, I would love to upgrade to a better mic but it’s very expensive 🥲. I love that you’re enjoying the channel man!!! Stay tuned for more!
and people say that MCU spider man is better than sam raimi's spider man
I don't care what people say. In my opinion spider man 3 beats tasm movies and the first two tom holland spider man films.
I love this movie so much
tobey maguire's spiderman is my number one spiderman not only bcz he made my childhood but his character writing is freaking awesome
tho he is just a teen he got the mind of 30 yo guy not like the last peter parker (i feel like he is just a child )
agreed
You put to words what we feel in the movie theatre!!! Great review and I love how you bring in the ppl behind the scenes...Great job!!
thanks!!
Whenever I think of Spider-Man, I think of Toby

Great review! I never really appreciated how good this movie was when it came out

I think why SM2 Is so good Is because it's so relatable and more grounded than any other spiderman film
Precisely
Fantastic video!

What a great video. I just subbed and I can’t wait to see what else you do. Keep going!

You absolutely POPPED OFF with this video! Super excited to see you grow from here. I'm a massive Rami/Spidey fan in general, but super hyped to see what all you tackle on this channel. I'm glad this was the first video to pop into my feed. Always enjoy hearing other people's takes on this trilogy in particular.
This means a lot man! Glad you found the page and enjoyed!
@@DyliciousTakes Of course, anytime!
Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man is and always be my hero. Both as a kid and an adult. Everything I would go through, everything I will go through. I see him as the standard of how to go through it with his chin up and to know what I want. I might not shoot webs or climbs.. I'll be the best I can. Or try to do better.
Hell yeah!
excellent analysis
Thanks brotha!!

Thank you!!
Tobey is ❤
Well credits obviously goes to Sam Raimi too.
I love this movie since I was a kid and it’s still my favourite. I have like 5 different versions some doubles just of this movie… and I’m still buying them.. (starting to kinda feel bad. The company made them to watch and I’m just collecting them.. maybe I should stop?)
Anyway I find it funny when I was a kid I would always skip ahead to the action scenes all the fights and stuff. As an adult I still rr watch the fightings scenes. But I also rewatch those real down to earth moments. That talk with aunt may he had, or the cake scene that when Peter was at his lowest, he thought everyone was against him and he had nothing, the world reminded him that people are still kind and deserve to be protected. Even if it is just a slice of chocolate cake. (Leading to the aunt may talk) but I’m the end.. the entire movie is the cake. And I will always eat the whole thing.
My friend also collects a ton of spidey dvd’s. Keep collecting!!
This deserves more views
Edit: more likes! More subscribers too!
Thank you so much!!!
Not gonna lie I'm liking this mainly for the video resolution. Don't understand why people don't do this automatically.
Thanks! ☺️
Super film.
Yes 🙌
This film is perfect!
My favorite Spider-Man movie!!
The tragedy of darth plagueis
The wise
this might the best movie ever made in spiderman history.
It is 🥹
I wouldn't say there hasn't been any superhero stuff lately or- since Logan that has dealt with those inner personal conflicts. I mean that was a huge part of Falcon and Winter Soldier, A MASSIVE part of WandaVision as well as Moonknight. I'd actually say ironically you use a clip of She-Hulk whilst making this point when Jen's struggle with her identity is a good chunk of her series as well. Hell LOKI even touches on inner struggles and identity, maybe not as much as the others, but definitely at least a little bit. Now. That doesn't mean they don't also have some world ending stakes, but those two things are by no means mutually exclusive. I'd say even then, WandaVision doesn't have any higher stakes than SM2 does or even maybe Falcon and Winter Soldier. Anyways, love your analysis though of SM2, I never really thought about the anxiety part of this film much, or the depression part and how that lends itself to relatability.
How did you get spiderman 2 in such a high framerate?
I never understood why Peter didn't just fake his death so he can be Spider-Man.
Because Peter wouldn’t be the type of guy to do such a thing. That requires losing his aunt and everyone he cares about, which he doesn’t want to do
I wish 3 could be remade
same
Yeah I had a huge spider man phase after spider man came out lol
Don't we all
Does this footage have motion smoothing or something on?
It’s upscaled. It’s 4k footage
I. love. this. video.
i. love. you.
@@DyliciousTakes You. Got. A. New. Sub. And. Your. Underrated.
@@luisf1234-gaming You're. An. Absolute. Legend.
To take from another good trilogy, “it’s not who I am underneath, it’s what I do that defines me”
That’s what I get from what Peter wants to be in 2.
this channel is underated as fuck
Thanks man! I love you ❤
Tbh I didn't relate to Peter in Spiderman 2. I've been depressed before but personally I still don't think his reasons were all that convincing to me and I expect Spiderman to be a much stronger person than I am and yet, I never felt like I would be depressed if I was in his situation
Ok try being poor, not being around your loved ones, losing most of them, not having time for your future work, proceeding to lose the love of your life, can’t hold a job, live in a crappy apartment and get back to me if you wouldn’t be depressed in that situation lol
What movie is this
tom cruise
@@DyliciousTakes Oh I love Big Guy Tommy as he likes to be called these days
He pretty much took it from the 90s cartoon. Why I loved the movie but most forget about or don't remember the 90s animated series and it had the spider verse and multiverse before the movies.
90’s cartoon is anazing
The real tragedy is MCU spiderman
For real
@@DyliciousTakes it's a topic rarely discussed because spiderman is such a beloved character. All the MCU cares about is being greedy and lazy.
SPIDERMAN 4 🤞🤞🤞🤞
MJ was the worst
WHAT
@@DyliciousTakes Mary Jane was the worst in the Spider-Man movie, the cookie girl was amazing
This trilogy sucks
Daring today aren’t we??
braindead take, elaborate
@@thewubgod terrible acting. Nothing like the comics. Peter didn’t become spider man because uncle Ben. He was inspired to make money to help out his aunt and her bad health. He wasn’t friends with harry or Mary Jane until college. He wasn’t a cry baby bitch. It takes a long time to figure out who the green goblin. Not in this movie. Defoe plays the same overrated crazy bastard as always
@@jacobfilasky2729 the acting is great for the most part, i can agree with Tobey and Kirsten being a little wooden in some scenes. But all the villains and side characters kill it, and that's not to say Tobey and Kirsten are bad. They improved dramatically in the second and third films
I don't quite get the second point. Peter, in both the trilogy and comics, started being Spidey for selfish reasons. It was only after Ben's death did he vow to use his great power for his great responsibility.
The time in which Peter is friends with MJ and Harry should have no bearing on the story as long as it's done well. Not every fine detail needs to be comic accurate.
Peter cries because he goes through some real shit. His uncle dies, his gf leaves him... you sound like toxic masculinity with this point. Let it out once in a while, it's okay to cry.
Also.. Peter absolutely cried very often in the comics, especially the Ditko era, which much of the trilogy is based on.
Goblin's identity is revealed to Peter at the very end of the movie. Literally the very end, that's as far Raimi could stretch that secret in a movie, which by the way is not going to be as long as a 500 page comic story. Shocker.
Not to assume, but it certainly seems like you don't know much about the trilogy or the comic itself. There's a reason videos like this exist, because of the depth and passion these films have.
@@thewubgod totally disagree with everything you said. Get a life . Write a book. Can’t change my mind. Fuck rami and rami fanpussies
Got to be one of the worst movie trilogies to exist.
