I'll say it ... If the Danny Elfman Spider-man Main Theme is used in No Way Home, the collective screaming in cinemas around the world will be heard from the Moon.
Post-NWH Edit: So ... anyone watched the film yet?
Because the Moon certainly heard the screaming.

I don't think it's just the best Marvel score, I legit think it's the greatest superhero score of all time. John Williams' Superman theme is iconic but it doesn't invoke the same emotions that the Elfman's Spiderman theme does for me personally.

I love Elfman's use of choir, he really uses it as part of the orchestra instead of just doing an occasional "ominous gothic chanting" sting. Choir is so underrated in scoring and it's weird because people seem to love it whenever it does appear (I think it's a big part of why people love Japanese game soundtracks, like Dark Souls')

It's funny; having grown up with 90s Elfman scores like Batman, Darkman, and Edward Scissorhands, I initially felt underwhelmed with the Spider-Man score when that film came out. But as time passed I've come to appreciate it so much more. The Farewell theme at the end of the film is a masterpiece. At the end of the day, the heart of Spider-Man is, in fact, his heart. That's why Farewell works for me.

It's probably worth talking about why it is that we get great scores on some occasions and not on others, and how it's not simply about the skill or talent of the composers. Temp tracking, severely reduced time, limitations on hiring musicians, and studio/director meddling all play significant roles in hampering composers and keeping audiences from hearing better scores. Elfman's work on Spider-Man, like the work from Williams or Shore or Goldsmith, is often about composer agency, a collaborative relationship with a good director, and producers and executives seeing a good score as a worthy investment in contributing to the overall quality and enjoyability of a film.

Your ability to draw out the deeper emotional content in stories and music is a gift. That’s wonderful, Barnaby! I love that idea. The music of our childhood can have such an impact. Have you ever seen “Saving Mr. Banks?” I balled like a baby watching that movie, and I think it was because there was a touching story overlaid with the old songs from Mary Poppins. That connection to childhood made the story particularly poignant I think. “Let’s go fly a kite” is one of those songs that just rips my heart out now... the lyrics likely have as much to do with it as the music itself. But at this point, they are forever entangled, like a musical topic (horn call=heroism, drone=pastoral, etc).

But the Peter Parker theme is more homely, it reminds us of how normal Peter is and it’s also reminiscient of NYC. Peter’s theme is that of a person, so the fact that the two themes combine is a really good sign of the two faces of the character. Under the mask is a regular guy, exactly what the comics were meant to show.

Sam Raimi's trilogy simply putted standards in my personal taste about super hero movies that are rarely met on most of them nowadays.
    For example:
-At least three memorable fight scenes between the hero and the villain where you could skip the movie just to see them (I did it all the time as a kid). Nowadays they do very small cool scenes mixed with normal ones and just a tiny meh final battle (usually too fast, anticlimactic and unsatisfying).
-A memorable theme for the hero that will be consistent throughout all movies and a memorable theme for the villains as well who also will be consistent to them through the movies, even if on just a tiny mentioning or appearance of them (like Green Goblin during Spider-Man 2 and 3).
-A cool introduction and/or ending showing the hero in action, his powers or in the case of Spider-Man, swinging around the city.
-Depth, emotion, occasional darkness to counteract the goofness, light hearted and humorous parts of super-hero movies and etc...
Movies nowadays, specially the ones from MCU are terrible at things like this, with the exception of one or two of them. I really miss more super hero movies that doesn't look like a processed junk food and instead are a whole full real meal with all kinds of colors and tastes... Movies like Sam Raimi's trilogy, Nolan's Batman, and even the old ones like the classic Superman and Batman movies.
Man of Steel, some imperfections aside, got really close to almost meet these standards. I still remember when I was watching it that I noticed that it has been a really long time since I saw a super hero movie with an actually decent and relatively long fight scenes where it was actually cool seeing both kryptonians beating each other while flying through the skyscrapers of Metropolis. No to mention the Hans Zimmer masterpiece of a perfect soundtrack.

@@grega3611 For real, Spider-Man 1 and 2 and then Batman Begins and TDK set the bar really high for what a superhero movie could be. The MCU has rarely if ever matched that quality and I've learned to live with the disappointment that they have no desire to make great movies despite dominating the genre. They're like The Big Bang Theory of movies.
I will say though that I don't think it's difficult for a good writer/director to make a great superhero movie like Raimi and Nolan did. There just isn't enough will to do it, and if there is, the wrong people keep making them. Zack Snyder was a horrible choice to make Man of Steel and the DCEU. His Justice League was mostly good but everything else he did was awful.

This movie is a gift for everyone who watches it and it was before a time that the big budget hero flick was a regular thing. This instead is a well crafted treat that everyone can relate to and be inspired by. The music is literally 50% of this film and you've described it in a way I couldn't have thought.

Great video. I actually wrote a thesis paper on Danny Elfman's music for Spider-Man 2002 and 2004. It is a fantastic piece of music and I was saddened that it didn't receive a nomination at the Academy, it should've won every year it was released. It is easily one of the most complex pieces of music in any modern movie. The layering is literal genius. And it is certainly without a doubt Danny Elfman's best work, ever.

Thank you for this. I've long heralded Danny Elfman's spiderman theme as probably the greatest superhero score ever written. Yes, even better than Elfman's iconic Batman theme and William's superman theme. As much as people acclaim Raimi's first two films, not enough people praise the music. With just the opening Suite, Elfman captures the excitement and thrill of swinging amongst skyscrapers, the bravery and heroism of Spiderman, the foreboding, threatening danger of his enemies, and the humanity, vulnerability and responsibility of Peter Parker. With beautiful, memorable melodies. All accomplished in less than 4 minutes. No superhero score has been able to so completely encapsulate the complexity and essence of one character.
This is what's missing from Horner's and Giacchino's Spiderman themes. They only evoke the heroic fanfare, without being able to capture the nuance and depth behind the character. Even Elfman's main 'hero motif', whilst only 3 notes, does not sound overly optimistic and simple - it has some ambiguity and complexity to its modality. It makes it feel so much more mature of a score, as opposed to the more innocent themes Horner and Giacchino came up with. It might just be Elfman's best work.

It understands the character of Peter Parker, expresses his emotions felt in the film, and has a rise-and-fall theme that reflects our hero's journey throughout this and the later movies.
