  • In this video, I am taking you step-by-step through my process of creating a loose oil painting of our family dog (she's the cutest!). I hope this will inspire and help you, whether it's the first time you pick up a brush or if you are a more seasoned artist.
What I love most is when a painting looks like a photograph from a distance, but as you draw closer you can see expressive brushwork. That's something you will learn in this video as well.
Feel free to navigate through these chapters:
    0:00 - 0:20 Introduction
    0:21 - 13:00 Initial sketch
    13:01 - 14:59 Base color mixing
    15:00 - 48:00 Blocking in shapes
    48:01 - 1:18:40 Painting furry details
1:18:41 - 1:31:40 Detailing the nose and eyes
    1:31:41 - 1:46:48 Finishing touches
❓If you have any questions or requests, I'd love to read about it in the comments. Please know that my materials are mentioned at the bottom of this text.

🛒My paintings (and prints) are available for purchase in my online store pfeilarts.etsy.com. This piece is not on there, as it belongs to my private collection. I do, however, take custom orders of pet portraits.
ℹ️If you’d like to know more about me, or get a custom order (know that I’m up for painting anything you can think of), you can always visit my website www.dennispfeil.com
🖼️The surface I’m painting on is a small MDF panel by the brand “Muspaneel”. They are very smooth, so I always add a layer of gesso on it with. This creates some extra “tooth” and a lovely texture! After that, I put a thin layer/wash of burnt sienna acrylic paint, just to get the white off. (There is a video available on prepping panels: See it here • How to prepare the per... )
👨‍🎨The paint I use is a special oil paint (Cobra, from Royal Talens) which you can thin by using water instead of spirits. Other than that, it's the same as regular oil paint.
🖌️ For brushes I use the cobra brand brushes, and for smaller sizes I use Mus brushes.
🎨 On the palette for this painting:
    - titanium white
    - yellow ochre
    - burnt umber
    - ultramarine blue
    - ivory black

Hi Dennis! I found your channel yesterday en I just bought a set of Artisan watermixable oil paints last week. I’ll probably binge watch some of your video’s, hoping to learn some techniques, as I am new to the medium. Thanks for sharing. I really like the painting of the wine corks from your banner. Do you have a video of those as well? Fijne dag!

Hi! That’s great, a whole world will open for you! No in depth process on the corks. Only a shorter video of the creation. Enjoy !
