  • Back around 2011 I bought this Yugoslavian SKS online. It came swimming in cosmoline. The stock was the worst I've ever seen in terms of cosmoline absorption. I replaced the stock with T6 from Tapco. Now I'm wanting to return this rifle to its original state. In this video I attempt to clean the stock of the cosmoline.
    Thanks for watching!

I removed cosmoline from a Chinese Sks with the citrus stripper and mineral spirit no oder. Then filled my bathtub with the hottest water i could. When I did tub the water was dirty brown. Did 2 times. Let air dry in between. Then cotton sock wet with hot iron. Brings out more crap, sorry. And also helps with dents. Alot of time and effort. But a great result. Did this for my Romanian 22lr 1969 training rifle, my Frankenrifle M1 Garand and Chinese Sks. All beautiful. Used correct stain. Then Tung oil only. Yes was too many hours. But in process now on my RFI 2A1, 1967 will spend the time. Retirement gives you time. Good luck guys . Papa Smyrna Tennessee

You can have beautiful results with those methods for sure. Good luck with that 2A1!

I guess I got lucky. All I did was the sun, once, and never had an issue. There wasn’t much on it.
Since sold that gun, because I got tired of all the rust prevention. Near the end though: Ultrasonic cleaners are amazing.

Rust prevention is a pain in the butt, especially here in Georgia. The humidity is so high! I've never seen a rifle with as much cosmo in the wood as this one.

I've got a Yugo M48 that has a ton of cosmoline on it even after I cleaned it up. It's going to need a few rounds of decosmoing. Thanks for the info.

I forgot one step i did ,found from a British YT channel. Also used regular home laundry Bleach! Was the final touch to make all 3 i mentioned. Also blonde wood. You will be amazed. All these steps work. The Bleach was the best. Completely clean after Bleach. Thanks 😊

Out of curiosity, how difficult is it to remove the rubber butt pad of a Yugoslavian M59/66 SKS?
