My dad has a 2014 Honda CRV with about 100K on it. He brought it to the dealer for a brake job. After the inspection, the dealer quoted him almost $5000 for repairs. This included $460 per axle for brakes(turning the rotors not replacing) , $180 for brake fluid flush, $1050 for an oil leak in the timing cover, and another $200 for a valve cover "leak". His CRV never needs oil in between oil changes. That is how small these oil leaks were. These prices are insane. I changed his brakes, rotors and flushed his fluid for less than $500 in parts. His timing cover leak was a $2 o-ring on the cam position sensor. His valve cover "leak" was from someone spilling oil filling it the last oil change. Service departments are a ripoff.

I have a 2003 GMC 2500HD with 90k miles. It has the standards like cruise control, delay wipers, power windows etc. Repairing it is relatively cheap and most things I can do myself. I recently checked to see how much it would be for me to replace this truck with brand new. $78k... and the only feature these new trucks had that I wanted was the backup camera and hands free bluetooth. All the other buttons, bells and whistles were of zero value to me but they came in the "trim package".
I checked around and found a replacement stereo kit specific to my truck that included a decent touch screen, bluetooth AND a backup camera for $800. It had the correct plugs and correct mounts in the kit, so I did the install myself in less than an hour.
These prices aren't jacked up because of the tech. Inflation is partly to blame, but my theory is that truck buyers are being charged higher prices so the manufacturer can make up the losses from their failed EV offerings.

Toyota admitted that back around 2010 or 2011 when they officially changed their new vehicle warranty to state that it's "normal" for their engines to drink up to 1 quart of oil every 1200 miles. That was followed up with Toyota admitting they knew for years that their frames had severe rust rot issues and wrongfully denied frame replacements to thousands of customers. And then the 3rd gen Tacoma was rated least reliable midsize truck for years by Consumer Reports due to transmission issues, rear differentials failing, engine issues, etc. Then the Tundra had tons and tons of issues with fuel pump modules failing and leaving owners stranded but Toyota dragged their feet with that. And the new 8-speed in the Camry was failing left and right but only after the warranty was up so tons of customers took it up the rear on that. And the 3.5L V6 was having tons of external oil line failures that lead to catastrophic engine failure but Toyota initially only recognized the issue with more expensive Lexus vehicles while dragging their feet for a couple years to admit cheaper Toyota brand vehicles had the same issue.

Yeah he's wrong, 2024 Tundras are having the same engine failure that 22 and 23 models had. And Toyota's claim that it's due to debris is BS. They made part changes to the engine design: main bearings were changed. Whether that is enough to stop the bearing failures we don't yet know. Even if they don't fail at low mileage like they have, they may still fail prematurely at a higher mileage. With all the attention on the engine failures, people are in for a rude awakening when they eventually find out that the current gen Tundra has also had a lot of transmission failures. Just like the new Tacoma has had a ton of transmission failures. The powertrains are junk.

Except Toyota has quietly moved production of vehicles like the Tacoma to Mexico where they pay workers a few dollars an hour instead of $20-ish dollars an hour. They cut the cost of labor significantly yet the price of a 2017 Tacoma TRD Pro started at $42k while a 2024 Tacoma TRD Pro starts at $62,900. And you can't blame that price hike on inflation because competitors that haven't moved manufacturing to Mexico didn't hike prices nearly that much. The radiator hose wasn't tightened, and I had to take my vehicle back for proper repair.

A guy came up to talk about it and in the conversation I found out he works at the Toyota engine factory in Huntsville Alabama where these engines are produced. He was complaining that nobody is a specialist in maintenance anymore, Everybody is a generalist, and when they had these new crank grinding machines for the new engines setup, since nobody was a specialist and really knew their subject super well, they apparently set them incorrectly and the clearances were way way too tight for quite a few cranks that went out in these engines. he fully expected recalls in the future, and here we are!

Toyota made parts revisions to the bearings just before announcing the "recall." The recall itself is even a joke -- all the engines are affected by the bearing issue but Toyota made it a "safety" recall where only the non-hybrids were claimed to be affected because the hybrid version can use the electric motor to safely pull off the highway. The engine will grenade like the non-hybrid version but since you can get off the highway, you aren't covered.

I have built and modified quite a few cars. Most of them pre emissions, so they could be driven on the street. I have built race cars out of a couple of later model former "computer cars", but they had to be trailered to the track. And as I said, I bought a like new 2007 Mercury Grand Marquis with only 36,000 miles on it for $10,000. It didn't need to be "refurbished". I gave it a full service, and it was ready to go another 400,000 miles (with proper maintenance) It will likely be my last transportation car. None of the Ford Panther cars use any kind of TRASH technology. Even the 2011 models use the same technology they used in the early '90s.

Specifically the so called eco boost engines. Ford quality is bad. Has been for at least 15+ years. And FORD, instead of apologizing and replacing those engines has chosen to fight a class action lawsuit every step of the way. I will NEVER buy a new FORD again.

Toyota isn't "replacing" the engines, they're accusing customers of causing the failure and then eventually approving the warranty repair. Only instead of actually replacing the engine with a new factory fresh engine, they've been insisting on the dirtbag move of only replacing the engine block and rotating assembling (crankshaft, pistons, rods). So when your $70k Tundra pos has its engine grenade, Toyota tells the dealer to have some random guy in the service department build you a frankenstein engine, reusing old potentially contaminated parts.

Now it needs the upper catalytic converter which the dealer wants $4,600 for part only no labor. About the same price as a transmission, how outrageous is that? I live in Maryland but I found a Kia dealer in Arizona that is selling the same OEM converter for $2,600, still expensive and I have to install it myself.
