Ishapore No.1 Mk.3 Lee-Enfield Musket Restoration Update - Century Arms .410 Smoothbore - Cleaned Up

  • A couple of weeks ago I put out a video unboxing this Ishapore No.1 Mk. III* Musket that I received from Century Arms. This thing was the literal definition of a "garbage rod". Every square inch was covered in rust. It was ridiculously dirty and missing a ton of wood. What wood was left was rust impregnated and as dry as a desert. After an extensive clean-up process this is what I have to show for it. For the 90 bucks spent on this firearm I couldn't be happier. It turned out to be a fun, although labor intensive, project for me. This project still isn't completely finished but I do think it's time to start hunting some ammo. I'm just glad I was able to put a little life back into this awesome 1917 dated Lee-Enfield.
    Thanks for Watching!

    You did a great job! One thing that’s worked for me before to get a darker or better matched wood color is to use Fiebing’s Leather Dye instead of stain followed up with boiled linseed oil.

    For all the small dings and nicks in the wood you ought to use a moist towel on it, and run an iron over that towel. That method plumps up the wood a bit and it can pop those dings out for the most part. My Dad did that on his Garand and it worked great.

    If you really want to get the "dark walnut" you need to use brown shoe dye. Also, Minwax is partially "wax" as the name implies. That old a can of it too probably had all the pigment settle to the bottom. Get down to the bottom of the can and use the sludge to get a darker finish or mix the can up thoroughly with a paint stick.

    I fireformed 303 into 410 just to try it. Used pistol powder and grits at first but found it worked better with a bit of shot on top to give it weight. Otherwise the grits were just too light to get the brass to expand all the way. It wouldnt be a problem for your gun but I had to shave down the base of the case to get my M6 survival shotgun to close on 303 cases

    @alexr4493 3 роки тому +1

    So how did you deal with the paint on the barrel and receiver? Did it just come off during the boiling process? By the way, I ordered three of $40 poor/incomplete guns. The wood was toast on all of them (literally crumbling in several spots), and it was clear that all of them had been picked over for parts in the recent past, either by Springfield Sporters or Century. Whoever did the stripping evidently worked fast and carelessly -- lots of stripped screw heads to deal with. Lots of pitting too, although the bores on all three are, quite strangely, almost mirror bright. The external pitting was another matter, however, and only one out of the three is probably fit for a restoration. Still, I think I did make off with at least $40 worth of parts per gun.

    • @ReadinessReviews
      @ReadinessReviews  3 роки тому +1

      I purchased a $40 one in order I just made from Century. I decided to because I figured there isn't anything to lose for just 40 bucks. I sprayed everything down with carb cleaner and scrubbed it with a nylon brush before boiling. That along with the boiling got most of the paint. After the second boiling the paint was all gone.

Tiger stripe, I would have kept. Just my opinion. Question, for you friend?? How does, A .410 cartridge, less powder, Lead, etc. , cost more than A 12 Gague ?? Never understood tis crap? LOL!
