Hi, Kayla! Thanks for one more interesting video. Just as always. You know, with all the students around the world, it’s a great idea sharing fun facts about our cities and regions? As for me... Well, I live in Krasnoyarsk - the biggest city in the Siberia (among the old cities, founded before the 20th century, that is). BTW the name Krasnoyarsk in Russian means «red steep river bank» because there are lots of them along our river Yenisey (the name of the river means «big water» in the language of one of the native tribes living in Northern Siberia). At some point as our «frontier» was slowly roiling to the East- in the year 1628 to be precise - our city was founded as a fortified town always on the ready to defend itself from local folk (Yenisei Kyrgyz, Dzungar people). We still retain a chapel on the hill where a watchtower was originally erected whish main purpose was to warn locals on the approach of natives. And this chapel is depicted on one of our banknotes as a matter of fact. Speaking of natives, our northern natives were so similar to American Indians with all their decorations, leather clothes, wigwams, tools, hunting equipment, spiritual thingies, weaponry and all. One can still see some nice samples in our local museum. Nowadays many of them still graze their reindeers in tundra but, as you may guess, most of their ways and traditions are lost forever… Just like in Canada administrative units in Siberia are rather… vast. So our region (krai) is four times bigger than the whole France. Fun fact, according to the law of 1841 all local citizens were obliged to grow up… potatoes under the threat of being deported to Bobruisk, which is in the Belarus, whose agriculture in turn is and always was centered on potato culture. Our city can boast 150 fountains and a cool statue «Uncle Wasya» (some drunkard and a dog peeing on him). Nice touch. We have a great national park just on the outskirts of the city «Krasnoyarsk Pillars» - a bunch of fancy rock formations which have their own names. Lucky us! Our personal urban record for the lowest temperature is -52,8C (-63,04F). Hope that was amusing. :)
