i grew up in the western mountains of the USA and small towns, vast views of desert landscapes feel like home to me. In isolated places, people are grateful for company, don't take resources for granted, and find happiness in simple living. I love seeing this in China. We have different cultures and history but a shared humanity. Especially with Western propaganda/bias in media, this is the kind of thing we don't see in movies or tv and I'm grateful to see it here. thank you for sharing this with us

In case you didn't know that our presenter is one of the most gifted on youtube, here is another example. Spoken in a second language, no less. She is a captivating soul.
This way of thinking and romance is deeply rooted among Chinese people. For thousands of years, poets and philosophers alike have shared these sentiments, continually probing the meaning of life and humanity's relationship with the cosmos. I shall never forget those famous lines like 哀吾生之须臾,羡长江之无穷, 固知一死生为虚诞,齐彭殇为妄, and 闲云潭影日悠悠,物换星移几度秋
Love you and envy you at the same time. I havent been following you for that long yet so I don’t know much about your background and what took you to get where you’re now but, your videos are just stunning, amazing, show us how the world is vast, humongous and incredibly diverse, full of different lives and things to do and discover. How our daily and own lives are so so tiny compared to all that no possibilities. So, although, at same time, I feel renovated with live and sense opportunities yet to live and to come, I also get depressed in “what am I doing with life” or “why have I made myself stuck to this place” sorta of feelings. If I ever build the courage to drastically change my life, leave all behind and try something else elsewhere, I’d like u to know that you and your videos will be big part of that. In other words, please continue what you’re doing, love you❤. Hope this comment finds you well😊
Also I’m a go-back-and-forth learner of Chinese for the last 8 years or so. But I’ve been stuck on my HSK4 (intermediatish) for so long that I’ve lost the track of it. I did the same highway last year. Very cool. Also stoped by the house. We did stay one night in the driveway, since there wasn't anywhere else we could park the RV along the road. The guy was so happy to have accompany. Chatted with us for hours.
The 'grass grids' are such an ingenious way to protect the highway, and the hard working people who work alongside it are unsung heroes. Safe travels as ever, Yan.
The driver makes a great "cohost" for your show. He's a fun and adventurous person, just as curious as you are. It feels like he''s a regular host on your show
U cannot not be amazed by the engineering feat of China. Also the 108 workers (好汉)that station along the entire highway to ensure irrigation success and preservation of the road from shifting sands. 108 is a significant number that date back to the 108 heroes of China. The red-blue houses are commitment to ensuring success for travellers. What a huge sacrifice living alone for 8 months period and with little or no bath. Totally love this vlog. Another 5 stars!
The significance of 108 dates back to thousands of years before that, it comes from the Dharmic religions that influenced Chinese culture. Eventually it became an important number for Taoism too, and it's directly from Taoism that the 108 number of heroes comes from.

The director of the museum is really professional. At first glance, you can tell he loves this job. It reminds me of the director of Xining Wildlife Park. He is also a small place and a person who loves his work.
The people who gave you some snacks in return of the favor you guys did to move there car out of the sand moved me that how the humanity exists in this world. Please keep posting the videos . I always love them and always watch them ❤
I felt bad for that curator because it seemed to have little tourists despite how passionate and knowledgeable the man is. Thank you for letting us appreciate his work.
Fascinating way to visit China and seeing places most of us will never have opportunity to visit. Ingenious method of protecting the highways across the desert and making them possible. Requires a lot of man hours and continual maintenance but worth it.
I hope the workers receive better supplies. I hope future tourists who see this video can stop by and chat with them. A big salute to all those who make this possible. ❤❤
Highways in desert, planting straws to block sifting sands! I have seen so many amazing things in China, and this is one of those marvels! Such a wonderful video, Yan, I have already started it to see it second time! 🥰
Dr. Yan, thank you for this amazing video! The challenge in building roads and trains amidst shifting sands is mind-boggling. How the problem of shifting sands is “overcome” is so simple yet clever. I bet your driver is having the time of his life experiencing things he would have never experienced if he hadn’t agreed to be your driver. Hope he agrees to your next assignment. Like a true adventurer, you just couldn’t resist going to Xining via the cross province highway G315.
Thank you for posting yet another beautiful and heart-warming video Yan. It never ceases to amaze me, from my western perspective I guess, just how friendly and trusting the people you encounter are. The way the gentleman offered to show you his humble home and wanting to cook noodles for you and your friend. The sincere gratitude that the stuck couple showed when you helped them with their truck. I was so happy to hear that you decided to continue your trip eastward and look forward to your next videos of you traveling on the national highway.
Those people in the desert houses remind me of people that managed lighthouses on the coast. That place you stayed looked like shipping containers. Very interesting! Thanks!
She mentioned that everyone working at the stations were couples because it would be too lonely for single people. I'm sitting here thinking, "She's so sweet, but naive." 1/4 of the world population feels lonely. At one place I lived for a couple years I had some upstairs neighbors that never returned a single "Hello". There are millions of people who live in isolation, even when others are within 20m of them (physically separated only by walls). In 2022, about 30% of American households were made up of one person. In Korea, it's 42%.

The desert dunes are mesmerising like a vast ocean. A very interesting video. I watched an entire documentary on how they dealt with drifting sands effecting the highways I was fascinated by the solution and pleased they found a simple , natural remedy amongst a world reliant on engineers who ignore natural solutions. Great episode Yan, thank you so much.
Yan, your ability to speak with just about anyone you come across is very commendable. You don't shy away from conversation, and I deeply admire that about you. You probably make these folks day by giving them some recognition and asking about their lives. As someone with pretty bad social anxiety, your videos give me courage to talk with others and most importantly, listen to their stories. Thank you for visiting the parts of China no one sees! If it weren't for you, many would not know these small towns and villages and its people exist!

Hello Yan, a few years back, I remember watching a Chinese movie ,about the keepers of those desert roads, so I know now how lonely it can be ,these keepers of the desert roads do a wonderful job, Water is so precious, even if its slight minerally , I'm a great believer in using the Key Line System , developed by PA Yeoman ,Water for every Farm, and now its used for turning the Desert Green, it was interesting how always the people greet you, the food was good, and the accommodation was OK, that road was a master piece, and using sticks & grass to stop the desert sand moving, but if you could get the grass types to grow in the desert it would stop a lot of the broken soils & Sand moving ,but of course there is a great need for water, I think there is a lot of work going on in China now I surely think in time there will be so much sand deserts turned into sustainable Agriculture, on that note Yan Wonderful video, Im waiting to see the next video, Regards & Best Wishes, Trevor.W.Bacelli. Thanks Yan….another unique video. Desert but not deserted. The highway shrubs manager reminds me of a lighthouse keeper. Catch you in the next.
Yan's long presentation and introduction about the geography, landscape and nature along the highway is amazing!
Yan offers travel videos like no other. Yan is not only a Chinese treasure, she is an international treasure.
Niao Yan.....Hello Yan.... our tour guide to visit the far corners of incredible China. Amazing journey you took us today, I could not imagine how well kept the roads are in the TAKLAMAKAN desert, but it's because they have nice people to keep it clean and maintain, so as not be buried in the sand. The Government sees to it that it be clean and takes care of it's people, it is a bit sad lonely life, but if they are happy and content that is all that matters. Thank you Yan for being a great Ambassador of Tourism for your beautiful country. Very informative video. I wish you and your family a wonderful Happy New Year 2025, be bless every step of the way. 🎊🎉 from Texas USA 🥂 ZaiJian (good bye).
I like your driver. He's proving to be quite the character, so I'm happy if you continue your trip together!
awesome, incredible, makes me want to go and travel in China again, last time was 1988! Thanks from Australia! 🙂
welcome!
thanks again for taking us on a journey around your amazing country and showing the China we would not see otherwise and once again your professional production on all aspects of what we view and hear you are as amazing as your country. many thanks
We not only enjoy your videos but totally amazed on your enthusiasm in traveling where no others can present the sights and sound of places you've been to. Stay safe always. 👍
What China has achieved is amazing! Truly inspiring. Enjoyed the video so much.
Contemplation est source de poésie.
Méditation est créatrice d'action.
Merci pour le voyage ... 😊
Thank you for always providing some of the best content on UA-cam! You’ve inspired me to travel myself and I hope to share my adventures with others someday!
Such an impressive feat of engineering! Driving through the world's longest desert highway must be a thrilling adventure. 🌍🚗
Yet another fantastic video. I love and appreciate how you effortlessly apply a human touch to all your videos. Thank you for sharing
Thank you so much! 🥰
If it weren't for you, many would not know these small towns and villages and its people exist!
an ancient country, with its magnificent landscape and rich civilization
Lovely video. What beautiful views of the desert and the desert routes, and all the lovely people. Thanks for bringing us along on this intriguing journey!
Amazing video, Yan. You are amazing and China is really amazing. Full respect for the 108 lonely & committed souls to take care of the highway really amazed me. I think no where except in China will have people to accept such a job.
What a coincidence! From November 1st to 8th, I also traveled the exact same route as Yan, from Ruoqiang in Xinjiang to Xining in Qinghai. The salt lakes and Yardang formations in Haixi were absolutely unforgettable!
Some of the best content out there. You are a gem.
In China nothing is impossible if u have the will, not even the desert can stop them from progressing
Dear Yan and your Flo 🎉, a happy healthy New Year 2025 with God's blessings.❤🌷🙏 Thanks for showing the amazing longest highway through the desert. God bless your hard work with good health and happiness.❤🌷🙏♻️💕
Thank you, Yan, for this awsome video! I'm fascinated by those highways in this big desert and by the people living there and taking care of the road. I wait for your next video crossing the desert from east to west!!! 🤩 Take care 🤗
Thanks!

To see a world in a grain of sand
And a heaven in a wild flower,
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand
And eternity in an hour.
Waaooo ! The real unseen china. Taklimakan desert"s landscape beauty is just surreal ..., I am awestruck by the undescribable beauty of it's landscape, , seems perhaps like in another planet. .Thank you so very much, and wishing you. a very happy new year , fr.Nagaland., India.
Love China, love ❤Chinese people from Pakistan.
those preview qinghai clips at the end are out of this world, really looking forward to your qinghai episode
So interesting that a road has been made. It's a miracle.😇It is huge😄.It has been a true pleasure following you.😊Hope you plan more trips.😊Greetings Grandma 62 years old from Norway.😃Happy New Year
You got Uighur curator for a Buddhist museum. You got a Han Chinese working with his Uighur staff. Xinggiang seem quite harmonious.
In the European and American media, Xinjiang seems to be like Syria
Well, this kind of harmony has been lasted for more than 1000 years
Ethnic minorities, Muslim white hats, and people from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan are all targets of care in China.
Much more harmonious than the Whites and Blacks in the US where I have lived for 17 years.
Can you guys please let us enjoy the video instead of putting your CCP paid propoga**a everywhere 😢
i can't believe that beautiful lunch was only 10 usd. this video made me so curious about the shifting sand desert, i can only imagine what the upkeep is like but it's connected so many small communities. awesome infrastructure!
I have seen the project taken by the authorities, but to see u travel here is simply amazing. Thank you....watching from canada
Yan's adventure and the infrastructure's accessibility enable many here to learn the unique nature and livelihood in the region. Great reveal Yan!
China is a great country.
More people need to see the rural and less explored parts of China. Thank you for the work that you do.
Yan, your seek knowledge culture is the way to show us the Greater China. Happy New Year. Chinese New Year just around the corner. Lets show the festive mood around China Civilization
hi from London! thank you so much for these videos. amazing to see raw china videos!
Another brilliant video interesting and informative and entertaining, great drone shots of the Desert . So interesting to see these parts of China somewhere I will never see also seeing the real China not what we see from mainstream Media in the West . Fantastic job as always looking forward to your next video
Xinjiang is home to over 50 Buddhist grotto temples, cliff inscriptions, and more than a thousand meditation caves, spread across the entire region. It is hoped that these sites will be preserved and studied in greater depth.
IT HAS BEEN SUCH A WONDERFUL YEAR TRAVELING WITH YOU AND SEEING CHINA WITHOUT POLITICAL IMPLICATIONS. SO BEAUTIFUL. THANK, LOOKING FORWARD TO 2025. BE CAREFUL, STAY SAFE
I'm impressed with the dorm considering the location. Thank you for bringing us along, Yan. ❤❤❤❤
yan, you seemed so happy and relaxed this episode and it was a pleasure to watch you in your element. I live approximately a 5 hour drive from the great sand dunes National park at the foot of the Colorado Rockies. You would love this drive there and the park! And ts almost too cold to enjoy it though s time of year:-( though.
Hello Yan, a few years back, I remember watching a Chinese movie ,about the keepers of those desert roads, so I know now how lonely it can be ,these keepers of the desert roads do a wonderful job, Water is so precious, even if its slight minerally , I'm a great believer in using the Key Line System , developed by PA Yeoman ,Water for every Farm, and now its used for turning the Desert Green, it was interesting how always the people greet you, the food was good, and the accommodation was OK, that road was a master piece, and using sticks & grass to stop the desert sand moving, but if you could get the grass types to grow in the desert it would stop a lot of the broken soils & Sand moving ,but of course there is a great need for water, I think there is a lot of work going on in China now I surely think in time there will be so much sand deserts turned into sustainable Agriculture, on that note Yan Wonderful video, Im waiting to see the next video, Regards & Best Wishes, Trevor.W.Bacelli. i was moved by the story of the old worker who irragates the plants for protecting the highway from invading by shifting sand in this vast dessert
简直就是旅游界的李子柒,太棒了。
I love these video, the people are so friendly 😊
小Yan的字幕校对真用心啊,没想到带口音的陕西话都正确收录了
Hi Ms Han, I'm in a foreign country but of Chinese origin. I have been following your videos for years now. I think I have watched all your videos on Unseen China which is one of the best channels I can find on UA-cam about China that is not political. I must say I enjoyed watching each one. Thank you for your tireless and brilliant work. The other 2 similar channels about China I like are: 清云迹 and Blondie in China, you all are professional and correctly focused.
Your travels and adventures help me relax and get my mind off of everyday concerns. I get to be in China and see the beautiful places I dream of visiting someday. Thank you!
Hi Yan I accidentally discovered your channel and believe me it's absolutely amazing, watching you from California USA
That's one trip i would never take but now I know what a wonderful adventure I would have missed. Thank you so much for taking me along with you. 💌
Yan, you’re truly amazing! You have a curious, brave, and kind heart! So much kindness and love in ordinary people you encountered! The stunning desert highway! I admire the people who built and are maintaining the highways!
Taklamakan used to be the Wild West of China, so vast and unconquered by humans. We are lucky to live in a time where modern infrastructure and public transport gets us to travel around
Another amazing video. So cool to see these humble hard-working people, unnoticed by most, who quietly keep things moving along for the rest of us. Superbly done!
