  • In episode 396 of Things We Said Today, Ken Michaels, Allan Kozinn and Darren Devivo discuss Ringo’s new track, “Rewind Forward,” Dolly Parton’s new cover of “Let It Be” with Paul and Ringo, and the freshly liberated recording of the Beatles at Stowe, April 4, 1963 - and that’s just the news section. The rest of the show is Wrack Our Brains, an idea we borrowed from our colleagues at Talk More Talk, in which each co-host poses two opinion questions that the others haven’t heard in advance.

    There is such a huge difference in Beatles appreciation between people who were there in the beginning and those who caught on later. For the older people, each new single or album was a new revelation, almost like getting a Christmas present. The newer fans didn't have that experience. So, they look back over the entire catalog and pick & choose songs they like and dislike. Worse, you hear questions like "Why would John release such a depressing album?" (Referring to Plastic Ono Band.)

      I agree newer beatle fans and podcasters are the worst. Glib vapid and zero intelligence. Any beatle podcaster born after 1975 should be ignored like a small child. They offer nothing and the should listen before they speak

    Are you guys familiar with the Elvis Presley FTD (Follow That Dream) series? Over a hundred sets - every album, tons of outtakes (maybe all available?), live shows. And the series is legit. Definitely a roadmap for the Beatles’ work.

      Yes, I have most of those - it must be close to 200 sets by now. All very well done with tons of outtakes for the studio sets (there are quite a few full concerts as well, particularly for the later years) and great liner notes. Certainly Jeff Jones at Apple is aware of those. You’re right, they could be a useful template.

    I don't mind when you go on tangents about other great artists. Thanks for sharing the Robbie Robertson stories! By the way, the John "Admiral" Halsey song Out of Town is a cover of a song done by a few crooners in the early 1960s, though I love Halsey's arrangement. It does have that Python "Bright Side of Life" feel.

    I wanted to THANK YOU all for not ripping Ringo's new single. Thanks for respecting that we still have him and are lucky to get NEW music from him (and Paul). I purchased "Rewind Forward" early Friday morning and listened 3X in a row and really liked it. Catchy, some neat word play, and outstanding guitar work. Nice vocal from Ringo and beautiful harmony vocals. I saw a couple other podcasts that were less than respectful, less than enthusiastic, and I was tempted to write to both (and I like these guys) and ask, "What did you expect at this juncture, Tomorrow Never Knows Part 2'???😂 I enjoyed your discussion on Dolly as well. Entire video, interesting and well done. Ken, kudos to you because any time I see you on the web, your professionalism and enthusiasm places you as one of the best Beatles podcasters. 👍

    Fantastic show guys I have been anxiously awaiting a new episode. To answer your question about which albums I didn't like much that I learned to love; Ringo's Ringo the 4th and Stop and the smell the roses are both albums I didn't like much that I grew to love because of the Colored Vinyl releases on Record store day. Now I love Ringo the 4th with the dance songs and songs like Wings and "It's No Secret" and Simple Love Song are so fantastic. Material World is an album I didn't like at all when I got it when I was 16. But lately because Ken sings its praises so much I have a new appreciation for it. I didn’t like it when I was younger because I didn’t want to hear 👂 about religion in 🎼.

      You made my day with your comments here. There's so much worthwhile stuff from the solo-Beatles that needs to be given a chance. It gives me a sense of fulfillment if I get old and new fans to either discover the solo-music or give it a second chance and realize that it's better than when they first heard it. Again, thank you.

    The Stowe recording is revelatory. As Alan said it is a key transitional concert that we've never heard. The sound is not the greatest, but the performance is strong. They do 9 songs from Please Please Me and if George hadn't been sick we probably would have gotten Do You Want to Know a Secret and Chains. He does some contribute some backing vocals to Boys and Twist and Shout. This would make a great addition to the SDE of Please Please Me, especially if Peter Jackson could apply his demix technology to; however, George's distorted guitar may not be fixable.

    What I look forward to (the last question) is Paul McCartney polishing George Harrison's demos and tracks. Hey, Brainwashed was to be a double album and George said he wished someone would finish his songs like the Beatles finished John's "Real Love" & "Free As a Bird". This may be the reason George Harrison's demos have not been released - they are waiting for Paul. Where is the rest of Brainwashed?

    • @MalEvansUSA
      @MalEvansUSA 11 місяців тому

      George loved Paul as a friend. He despised Paul as a musician and was quoted in 1975 as saying ‘I’ll never be in a band with Paul mccartney. Willie Weeks is a far superior bass player and his wife is a better cook than Linda ‘. He really could not stand Paul in the studio and they didn’t collaborate save for two beatle tracks after 1981.

    • @patrickconnolly4408
      @patrickconnolly4408 10 місяців тому

      @@MalEvansUSA Maxwell's Silver Hammer is an awful song and it was a mistake of Paul for pushing it on the other 3. Sure George was glad to get away from some of that pushing but there was a lot of promotion going on and saying nice things about Weeks was helping Dark Horse - John said a lot of worse things about Paul but he seemed open to working with Paul - all that under the bridge - life is busy and it is not unimaginable that they would not have minded making music together if the opening came along easily - if they did, I believe a magic would always exists when George and Paul (- and John and Ringo) play together.

    • @MalEvansUSA

      @@patrickconnolly4408 not sure. John was strident in criticizing Paul in all interviews circa 1980. Lennon despised Paul’s granny music and really hated Linda and her obnoxious socialite family. Lennon sharply rebuked Paul in 1980 and despised Harrison’s lack of gratitude for letting George in his band

    • @patrickconnolly4408

      @@MalEvansUSA Thanks Mal! I never heard anything about John hating Linda. I know Paul was on good terms with John when he passed away but John died with a grunge on George for not giving him credit in I Me Mine. May Pang talked about how warm the phone calls were between John & Paul in spite of all the public rivalry.

    • @MalEvansUSA
      @MalEvansUSA 10 місяців тому

      @@patrickconnolly4408 you are wrong to say John and Paul are in good terms circa 1980. They weren’t john had no use or any kind of kind words for Paul please reread the playboy interview in 1980. Read the Newsweek article with Barbara grustark listen to the Andy peebles interview. Jonathan cott interview 1980. John Lennon rakes Paul over the coals. He says they haven’t communicated in ten years. John Lennon makes fun of his albums and works. Belittles Paul’s beatle contributions. You can hear Paul say to David Hartman on November 28 1980 that he has no communication with John and doesn’t know why John resents him. Paul continues to rewrite beatle history and narratives. They weren’t close at all in final years John Lennon despised Paul’s brother in law and father in law. And he didn’t care for Linda at all including her New York socialite tendencies. John trashed her housekeeping and cooking skills to May pang. May pang is talking about the early 1974 period. May pang is a sad woman who has lived a life showcasing a brief 16 month relationship she never knew the man and was a glorified personal assistant not an intellectual or soul mate. She was kind of a bimbo to most beatle insiders during that period. She was a very ditzy woman without a great deal of intellectual cache. A glorified groupie. May is a nice lady but she was never in John’s league intellectually or artistically or spiritually. She was paid staff

    If mark lewisohn adopted the work ethic of ally kozinn and Adrian Sinclair the anthology would have been long finished. Mark lewisohn inability to assign a publishing date is a slap in the face of every fan. There is a fairly reasonable chance that mark will never finish and some real beatle historians chip madinger and ally kozinn and Luca parisi will finish the books. This has happened in publishing ie William Manchester and Winston Churchill and Mario Puzo and his godfather trilogy. so I am rooting for mark lewisohn to finish and stop researching and start writing. Lewisohn is an old 65 and looks like he is pushing 80 and entering an assisted living facility Let’s get on and write it. It’s a pop group story not the Talmudic scrolls. Lewisohn needs to do more writing less whining for money and hand outs. Most beatle fans are sick of him and his arrogance

    Kenny michaels is Walter Cronkite of Beatles podcast. It will be a sad day when he tells us of ringo and Paul’s passing. He will handle it with grace and dignity and will remove his glasses with dramatic effect and wipe tears. It will be a deeply sad event that will be minimized by Kenny michaels sensitivity and maturity. Darren will come on like Dan rather and report the facts whilst ally kozinn will be harry reasoner and deliver an eloquent and deeply insightful essay on Paul’s life. Rip. From a pure actuarial sense and due to their smoking history both Paul and ringo will most likely be deceased by 2030 or earlier and it will be a very sad day but a life well lived

    Paul in 2023 can’t sing anymore and would offer nothing in terms of singing verses. Darren is right in that Dolly Parton offers nothing in terms of singing free bird or purple rain. Dolly has been a joke since the variety show in late 80s on abc . Darren is spot on with his view. Dolly at 78 years old offers absolutely nothing. She is older than Lucille ball when she dropped dead after the Oscars where they did Snow White with Robby Lowe
