Ring Stick Up Cam PoE (Power Over Ethernet) Setup and Installation

- Today, I'm going to show you guys how to install multiple Ring stickup cams using the PoE or power over ethernet connection. I'll be using a PoE injector switch that only has 1 uplink port to connect to your router and 8 available ports for your Ring stick up cams or any brand of cameras that can be connected with PoE.
We will then test and compare the Stickup cam's video quality day and night, 2 way audio and also camera opening speed to live view and see if there are any differences when compared to a camera that is connected via WiFi.

One thing I would add is instead of using bulb grease, you can use silicone sealant around the exterior RJ45 connection. It's easy to apply and to peel off and provides waterproofing. Around plastic piece where the cat6 cable inserts into, you can put silicone tape over the hole to further waterproof it and to prevent bugs from making a home in there.
Thanks for the tip. I'll try that.
Just use duct seal putty.
Your videos are getting better every month. You are an excellent instructor!!
Thank You. I appreciate it.
Agree. So helpful. Thank you
He sure is! @@LifeHackster
I would like to replace some old POE cameras with the Ring Elite cams but I really dislike the way the underneath is exposed. Hope Ring improve that aspect of the design in a future version, or at least provide a rubber grommet that seals the Ethernet cable hole.
I called Ring and they sent me this video and yes the exposed connection is not up to there standards. Can't believe they missed that.
Bought it, love it, the only problem is that they keep bothering me with surveys from Ring. That’s OK, I name dropped you from UA-cam as the reason why I bought it. Hopefully you get something out of that. Thanks for the reviews. It has meant everything to me when making my decisions for cams and security!
Thank you. I appreciate it.
if you are running a poe setup and ran the cat wiring, i suggest you just get a true real POE camera. it is better in every single way. better quality--i mean TONS better, and 24/7 recording to NVR.
Thank you for the review. I agree that the video/audio quality was not what I expected for a wired connection.
Thank You.
Hey LifeHackster, great video. I just purchased this camera from ring. Since I have 2 other ring wifi cameras, I was hoping to simplify using one app on my Iphone. Little did I know the issues this camera would take. I had a wifi camera outdoors, that was pushing the limit of the wifi signal strength, so I figured a PoE connecting via an ethernet, would be the way to go. It seems Ring help force is unfamiliar with setting up a PoE camera and it has been one problem after another. They indicated just hook up the camera to power source then run ethernet from router to camera, and of course that doesn't get it. Your video on how this works is most helpful. Now I understand I need more than a common switcher off the router, but a PoE switcher to power the camera via the ethernet cabling. Something the Ring Help desk doesn't seem to understand either. Thanks to your informative video, once I get this working, I may look at a better camera system, using the PoE setup.
If you will be running PoE or ethernet cable outside, check out NVR systems. They will have better video quality up to 4K and can record 24/7. They are just not reliable in motion notification...Ring still is pretty good in accurate motion detection.
I just got this camera but my lighting sucks at night. I didn’t hear exactly what lights you’re using next to your cams to add color at night. I’d definitely love to get one too! Thank you for the amazing videos!!
Another great video. Hopefully Ring takes your advice and make the quality of the video and audio better when POE is detected vs wifi.
Thanks and really, Ring should and I think they can do it with a firmware update.
Thank you so much for your honest opinion and review 11:23
You saved me, I was thinking to buy POE switch (even though I have normal Linksys switch) + pay extra for POE cam
Thinking there is huge benefits
An advantage is that the Ring POE cams work with Alexa. Can you please talk about any differences there?
All Ring cameras wired, plug in, Poe and battery work with Alexa.
Lifehackerster is king 🤴 of cams !!
Thank you :)
Excellent video! what's the difference between the stick up cam and the stick up cam elite? My house is prewired with ethernet cables. I'm trying to figure out which camera to choose wired, plug-in, battery? Does spot light cams also have the ethernet port?
The Wasserstein PoE Switch you listed and used, states it puts out 96w across the 8 ports; that comes out to only 12 watts per port. I spoke with Ring customer support yesterday about the watts needed/required by the Stickup Cam to run POE; in short, the representative could not find the answer in her system, it wasn't listed, but deduced it needed 15.4 watts, since the "Ring POE Injector" sold by Ring, puts out 15.4 watts. Do you think possibly your test results would have been better with a full 15.4 watts going to the camera? If you get the time, could you test this observation and see if it makes a difference?
I’ll try to test it and see..
Since these cams use a 5.2V DC input voltage, and the included power supply puts out 1000 mA, that equates to around 5W per camera, well within the capabilities of that switch. Just my opinion.
Great video! My POE Stick up camera were lagging still. UniFi cameras is the way to go
Your other Brand off Cameras is what I meant to say. Thanks
Ring app will only work with ring cameras.
I would think the primary advantage is less chance of cut-outs though that isn't as easy to test unless you have problems. I'm not surprised that the video quality is the same as their choice seems to have more to do with their bandwidth and storage costs than anything with a customer's local bandwidth.
@First Name I didn't say power cuts, I said cut-outs. I'm referring to issues where you don't get video, get choppy or it cuts out/freezes for a few seconds. Like he mentions in the video, wifi is the main issue with all of Ring's cameras that causes these (and other) issues. Wired solution eliminates all the variability and issues that wifi brings.
@First Name Yeah, that is all I'm suggesting; that wired benefit is just to eliminate the possibility of issues with wifi. I've not had any issues either, since some of the updates last year addressed a number of problems, but forums indicate lots of folks still do. The camera's wifi chips or software seem to be pretty subpar. Like Lifehackster notes however, I wish wired did give you the option to select for higher bitrate.
True. It will be more data that they need to save to their cloud...I wish they have other recording options aside from their proprietary cloud recording.
there is no point to use ring products if you are setup for POE and run cat wiring. Ring's business model is get people to pay monthly cloud storage so they will never open up their system for local storage and allow for better quality recording, because then no one would pay the fees anymore.
Wow thank you for the thorough video.
Hi, I can’t seem to find any reviews for the stick up elite POE (power and internet). Are you planning to cover it?
Thank you for your help on RSSI issue.
Can’t wait for ring to release 24/7 recording. Any idea on pricing yet?
I haven't heard anything yet. I know though that it is a separate plan and additional to their current Protect Plus Plan.
LifeHackster is there any news on the 24/7 recording options to date? I ha e a ring alarm system, doorbell and floodlight cam at the moment however, contemplating moving to a NVR setup like Unifi (any other recommendations?) I would prefer to keep everything in the same Eco system though.
This didn’t age well 💀
Hello LifeHackster. I love your videos. Very Informative. Question. Wouldn't a direct PoE connection be more secure then a wifi signal? I mean as far as hacking into video signal?
Yes, it is more reliable and dependable than WiFi..
Lots of great PoE switches out there these days, making injection all the easier. Gonna watch and see which brand/model you went with, since I trust your judgment (and budget!).
I was going to get this for long range monitoring but I guess not. Keep doing what you doing. Sean
I have a ring doorbell. I built a home server. So now I'm debating between getting a ring floodlight. Or switching them both out for real POE cameras. RING will always compress the footage since it's stored on the cloud and they only charge $30 a year.
I like your reviews I dont have any cameras yet but would relly like to have a couple for my home.
Thank you.
I am thinking about a reolink poe nvr with 4 to 6 reolink cameras
Thanks for your review. Ring is not there yet, the worst part is there camera design does not protect the cable. I'd rather have poe cameras where the cable is protected through the camera body. I wired our previous house for ethernet and rg6 for cable / satellite. Since I am retired, I will probably spend some time in the attic to get my dvr cameras up and running. RG6 is probably a good idea as well, I might as well do it all at once!
I know. I also not liking the look of it with the cable dangling.
Thanks LifeHackster!!! Another informative video. I really enjoy n learn a lot from them. I’m going to wait to purchase a POE Camera. I’m hoping the video quality will get better. BTW, did u hear about Blink’s coming out with their Doorbell camera. They stated u won’t have to connect it to the doorbell, but u can still connect it to the doorbell if you like. Interesting!!
Thank you. I know Blink scrapped the doorbell plan last year but I haven't heard anything new.
With the ring wired camera, can you use poe solely just to power the camera but connect to the modem for signal via wifi?
Great question I’m wondering about this as well
Life hackster. I have a question. I’ve been using Arlo cams for 4 years now and love them but don’t love swapping batteries. I used to have Poe cams and they weren’t that good and changed them for Arlo. One issue with Arlo on iOS is they don’t have configurable alerts on iPhone. So when a person crosses your cam the sound is the same as a text message or general alert. Very strange they didn’t give the option on it for a different more noticeable sound. So the question is on an iPhone the alert that happens when your cam is tripped can it be changed for different sounds. I see this very often in iOS with just apps in general. Somehow the app writer is leaving these things out. Please let me know
which is better stick up cam wired or reolink system ???
Nice Review! Thanks!
Thanks.
For viewing my driveway do you recommend gen3 or the elite stick up cam? I have the ring pro doorbell so was trying to just use one system ? Thanks
Does this record 24/7 as well? And/or, Can I connect it to a TV to view it 24/7?
Ring cams only record motion events. There is no option for 24/7 recording.
What do you think about the Arlo cams vs the ring. I do have 15 Arlo cams some hooked up to power all the time and most on battery. They operate pretty good but the main issue is obviously battery life in an area that has a lot of activity. Just your opinion what one do you like best over all of you had to choose. Reason I’m asking is I just ordered a ring alarm system and saw the cams and I do like an all in one app. Let me know
I’ll go with the Ring just because of the overall Ring ecosystem especially if you have the Ring alarm.
LifeHackster does it have configurable alerts because I’m on iOS the normal alert is general for all
Looking at this to get rid of my wireless cameras so I can keep a steady connection.
Did you brand cameras come up on the Ring app? if so what brands? I have Luma and there system is awful and you can't even get notifications. and the price is unreal but I was new and did not do my research on a new home.
I plan on buying 2 or 3 of the stick up ring cams. Each camera is going to require a 100ft ethernet cable. Should I worry about buying high speed cables since they are way more expensive? Just wondering if it's a waste of money or not.
@lifehackster - does hanging on the soffit ceiling like you do require some kind of anchor or is it strong enough to not drop the cams? Thinking of putting this up in my breezeway ceiling.
Did you use cat 5 cable with or without shielding
Do you have a video about the ring chime, which is a WiFi extender.
I do. The Ring chime Pro. Just search it in my channel.
A question I have not really been able to confirm and am hoping you can give the answer. I like the wider angle of view of the Stickup Cam Elite but that has been removed from the newer StickUp Cam Plugin/Battery/Solar with only 110 Horizontal instead of 150 for the POE version. The specs say in can be connected by Ethernet (POE) or 802.3 b/g/n WiFi. Listed under the Included In Box is only a AC power source for the Injector and nothing else. The Videos show choseing connection by Ethernet or USB. CAN you Power with a USB power source (Not Included???) and connecting with WiFi, that way still get the Wider angle views and presumably editable Motion Zones (Just a guess)
Hi I really appreciate the video the you made but i have a problem i I bought the ring Elite cameras but that Switch that you recommend is no longer available can you recommend another one for 8 channel thanks
I have ethernet thru out my house and garage. can I use a single port injector to power a cam inside the garage and then another outside the garage using 2 of the available ethernet ports in my garage? or should I use a switch with multiple ports? I designed my garage and my house to be able to accommodate POE even though I didn't know what I would use it for. it appears to have been a wise decision but the answer to my question will decide for sure in regard to the ring cameras. thanks in advance.
Sharing one injector will probably not work because one port will only give out enough voltage/power for one camera. You can use like the one that I have which is one port from the router and 8 available powered ports.
Do you have any solutions for a ring doorbell2 cam having issues with connection to live view and delayed motion? Power is good and internet is -50, according ot device health.
IMO, if you have an area of your house with poor or spotty wifi signal and want a camera, get a nice POE cam with built in SD card storage so you don't have to have an NVR box. I have a couple Hikvision DS-2CD2385FWD-I and their 4k 8mp cameras are not only much cheaper than the stick up cams, the image quality is on a totally different level.
yup EXACTLY. if you are going to run poe setup and run the wires, then get out of Ring's crappy hardware. They will only use cloud because thats how they make money on the fees people pay. It's almost a waste of time and effort to run the cat wiring then in the end use it for a Ring product lol
@@moialder252 The only counter argument to that I would say is that Ring's software is well put together and everything "just works" (in my experience at least). There's a lot under the hood you have to tinker with on the higher end cams as well as setting up port forwarding in your firewall. Some of my hikvision cams can't stream the full resolution feed even on the local LAN, h265 breaks internet explorer's live view so I have to use h264. Since I bought gray market versions of a couple of them I can't upgrade the firmware for fear of bricking or reverting back to Chinese, the hikvision app is atrocious, etc. There are equivalent quality POE cams out there but my hikvision NVR kinda keeps me tied to their cameras and I don't need a ton of them so I haven't bothered looking into other brands other than the Wyze cams inside my home.
I see that 3 dollars a month for Ring as a convenience fee and you get an easy to use app out of it and in the highly unlikely scenario that I have a break in and they manage to find and steal my NVR, thus removing all footage, the streaming footage with Nest isn't really steal-able so there ARE some perks to their services. My main gripe with the Ring doorbell pro cam I have is that the image quality is significantly worse than my 1080p hikvision. It's genuinely terrible but *just* good enough to serve it's purpose.
I have one of these cameras it's impossible to switch from wifi to Lan goes to 95% where I intended to install it I can't get wifi thus my purchase of this camera even in front of the router with available 1g and wifi at 321mbps it still. Won't work , a total piece of junk even ring tech can't solve the issue
I use the Ring to give me a time stamp on triggered events and use my Amcrest (POE) system to view actual footage during that specific time - it's a great way to compliment each other. I am very happy with both products. I know you use Reolink, but have you thought about testing other systems like Amcrest, Samsung and others?
Yes. That is what I do too. If my ring notifies me of motion that I need to check out further, then I’ll review the Reolink recordings.
LifeHackster, the Wasserstein POE switch you have listed is not Available anymore on Amazon. Do you know any other ones that are good to use? Also, do you really need a NVR to record videos? If so, any idea of a NVR I can purchase.
Thanks for any advice you give.
If you only have one camera to connect to PoE then the Ring PoE injector would be the best choice. -> amzn.to/2XZR9S4
I didn't get how a POE adapter will be useful for Stick-up camera. Can you tell me how POE adapter has to be connected in both input and output units.
Hi lifehacker thanks a lot for the video. Do you have any brand you can recommend with at least six holes or more Poe adaptor. Thanks 🙏
I used a Wasserstein in this video and I have a link of it in the description.
Do you have a review on doorbell elite or elite camera.? Txs
I was so ready to hop on board and buy a all new system and come to find out the POE version is no longer available as of 9/10/2022
Are all wired ring stick up cam PoE or only the elite version?
Is there really any need for the Doorbell camera. Won't the stickup or other ring camers provide everything but the doorbell to push?
Can you use these cameras like cctv, for example when I am working in the house office I like to leave my camera on view on my iPad so if something approaches the front door I can react quicker to answer it? Just wondered on Poe if I can do the same with these cameras??
what version of ring cam is this i ordered the ring stick up cam wired no poe anywhere
This is the 2nd generation and it is wired + PoE.. this is now called the Stick up cam elite.
@@LifeHackster do you know where i could buy the older version
Turn off the music when showing audio quality. Please
I will. Thanks for the feedback.
Hi good vid quick question, I am looking to buy this very ring Poe camera. I want to lower with a lower cord and connect ethernet for internet purposes. Will there be any issues using power line adapters for the ethernet connection between camera and router? Thanks
Any news on spotlight battery cameras getting custom motion zones?
I haven't heard anything yet.
Great videos! I love your attention to details, especially when it comes to deciphering all the Ring camera models and the features each have, it's a complicated matrix, and ring's documentation on the topic is nowhere to be found. I believe this is the camera that they are currently marketing as the Ring Stick up Cam Elite, is that correct? Also, can you tell me if that camera is now enabled with the snapshot feature they rolled out a couple months ago? (I saw in your other video that you still use these daily, so I figured you'd know, thanks!)
Do u think silicone will help, I use it for my Poe ip cameras
It should work too.
I have been looking at these because my WiFi signal is a bit dodgy. I would have to run the Ethernet cables around my house to run these do you think it would be worth getting a 4K nvr Poe instead or stick with this. I already have a ring doorbell so I have the app and everything set up already
Once the camera is mounted I see you can move it up and down, does it also pivot or is it fixed?
It moves side to side also..
What’s the best wireless camera you recommend. I currently have the wyze with outdoor aftermarket cases but I feel like the cool down period is too long and I miss a lot of notifications.
Check out the eufy cameras.
@@LifeHackster have you found anything better then EUFY since this review? I'm not overly impressed with batteries!
What other Poe switch would be good the one you have in the link isn’t available on Amazon I have 4 stick up 2gen and I’m wanting to change it to Poe
Nice!
Thanks.
If I pick the stick up cam Poe to a switch do I still need to use the ring adapter? It would save me from plugging into two outlets with the adapters.
I have one stick up cam this cam installaton ID is missing anthor ID is how open ,please replay
May I know if POE works for Stick up Wired or Battery version?
Just the wired version.
@@LifeHackster Thanks.
Does the elite stick up cam still use WiFi for data or can it use the data from the switch?
Can you review other PoE cameras? I am interested in outdoor cameras that doesn't cost me a lot toward subscriptions but still offers push notifications of motion detection. I hope Ring will offer a 24/7 recording with a better timeline view of the motion events recorded.
Yes a cloud connected that I can download and share easily
I will be reviewing a Swann wired PoE camera soon. These wired systems are stand alone and doesn't need subscriptions.
I really like the ring indoor cameras but the outdoor poe are just not up to par with other poe cameras w/ nvr from reolink just yet. I hope Ring fixes this soon so that I can have all my cameras on the ring app together soon.
So the Poe is only for power and not data transfer in this case?
Quang Tran
Right,
POE means
Power
Over
Ethernet..
Not data..
Both power and data. It doesn't need WiFi.
LifeHackster why is there still lag in video even though its connected thru ethernet and not wifi?
Apparently the stickup cam that has both POE and plug in power options is no longer available and the POE version is twice as much.
Good video Kuya. My problem would be I need to do a full network cable run in my house.
My camera gets the power from Poe but it refused an Ethernet connection for it and forced me to go WiFi ? How to fix
Stick up cam wired vs battery
It is coming pretty soon.
I am tired of my aged AvertX NVR, but seems like I may have it replaced by a PoE switch and manage existing AvertX cameras via Ring app. Am I right? Thank you.
Do you have a link for the Wasserstein switch? Thank you.
The link is in the description of the video. Thanks.
@@LifeHackster Thanks, I must have overlooked it, it's now unavailable, but found a similar one during prime sale.
@@michaelsmith7753 Do you have a link of the one you are using? I'm ordering Ring stick up cams and want a switch that can power all 3 cams and not sure if any switch works or if it has to have certain specifications to work with Ring. Thanks.
At the time that was a lightning deal for $35. I'm running two Ring stick up cams and one vera Vista cam, and all works flawlessly.
Sorry I had to pull the first link it went directly to my Amazon account
The only issue for me is ease of use. If I have multiple apps to control door locks, door bell, alarm system, and cameras then it is harder for my family to use. I have chosen ring for the alarm due to the integration with my door locks and doorbell. I would rather do a different system for the cameras but the it is a new and different app.
Love the video. Disappointing product.
I know. I had high hopes for this camera.
@@LifeHackster its the same for the Ring Elite doorbell. we all thought being POE would allow higher bitrate no compression and higher fps for overall better video quality. But NOPE. remember ring is cloud based and will stick that way because that is how they make money from the cloud subscription. you take that way by allowing local storage to NVR --then they lose profits.
wifi is the 90% of complaints about ring products. Even when router is 2 meters away. They're not intended for non-stop live video feeds imo. I hope POE products fare better because they have good marketing.
I agree with you..it seems like their camera WiFi antennas are not as strong as other brands.
well if you run poe wiring, there is no longer any reason to stick with Ring products because they wont take advantage of what POE has to offer because of their business model to sell monthly subscription on their cloud storage. so if you wire up for POE, get a true POE system
What Poe switch are you using? What wattage does it ready require?
I use the Wasserstein. I have a link of it in the description in the video.
Attention! You need to tell people that only the Ring ELITE! Is POE compatible and not the standard plugin camera which is not.
This is an old video. These are 2nd gen stick up cams and their wired version has PoE.
Waiting for the swann system sir :)
Yes, it is coming pretty soon... did the unboxing and looks promising.
Did you try Arlo Ultra ?
Yes -> ua-cam.com/video/Q1P2QtHAH2E/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/o8lxJOn0Pmg/v-deo.html
I think a cat6 cable would be much better as it increases the bandwidth.
You can also use cat 6..
poe cameras even the good ones wont even come close to maxing ou tthe bandwith that 5e is setup for. heck even regular old cat5 is plentiful.
is the internet connection over cat 5 or just power?
Both. Poe means Power over Ethernet so the cable carries power and data
Which of the ring cameras have Smartthings support?
I'm not sure. I need to check out smart things.
WH-109T-L I can not find this
I guess you forgot to mention, that only the Ring Stick Up Cam Elite, which is $199, has the POE feature, none of the others have the ethernet port :(
This is an older video and is about the 2nd generation stick up cam wired version which has POE aside from being plugged in...Ring now changed it to the Ring Elite and bumped up the price.
Am I alone in not being very impressed with these new cameras? They've been a long time coming and don't seem to offer much of an improvement over the previous generation in picture quality or technology (eg: facial recognition etc), and aren't exactly cheap either...
The stick up cam has a bit better video quality than the spotlight cams but barely noticeable.
You have to think about bandwidth and also battery. Once you start going up in resolution and do lots of live viewing, you will drain it quicker.
I agree the Ring Camera’s video quality is very poor.
This camera is way overpriced for Poe with only 1080p.... I got tired of all the WiFi/smart cameras.... decided to return everything and go with wire. Traditional wire ip cams are still the best.
I agree. Wired NVR systems are still better and more dependable than WiFi cameras.
Which wired cameras did you go with and how are they so far?
Tee Jay i haven’t exactly purchase mine yet.... but I always have a few amcrest in another remote location. They are reliable and always up, only been down 1 or 2 times in like 3 years... The only new camera I purchased and kept is the amcrest 4mp ptz. I like this little thing, not Poe, can be wire or wireless. Only draw back is that it’s a indoor camera, but I am using it inside, so fine for me. I am likely to purchase the new amcrest 4k 8mp bulllet in the near future, I have more faith in this brand than any other brand out there. Only problem is they don’t have anything with siren and led light......
@@sickegg2000 ty

Wow, there is really no difference between wifi or wired..not worth it..I was surprise how bad the audio sounded even being wired..Epic fail..
Yes. The audio still sucks even it is in PoE connection.

En tu país no hiba a tener nada de esto
I think these cameras are average at best - they’re ugly compared to other cameras and I’d like the option to show a small led status light on while the camera is operational like nest and hive do. Performance of the cameras doesn’t justify the cost
