Hi, I wanted to ask you a question. I am a 15 year old boy who has hardly ever trained. I know it cannot be defined. But if you know more or less if you can improve the speed. Thanks for your future reply
Hi Hurricane Style hopefully Harry or some other guru replies to you but I am going to give you some valuable tips from a very old guy. YES YOU CAN ! You are more amazing than you think. Don’t be limited by others beliefs. You can run fast short or tall even at the highest level. You can run fast at top level sprinting till your mid thirties. You don’t have to be any particular race. You don’t have to do a particular magic exercise. You haven’t trained so don’t expect miracles and don’t write yourself off. TRAIN. RUN Train and run some more. Learn to love training. Watch youtube videos on technique. Build up slowly. Walk jog run do pushups and sit ups. Do lunges. Rest and do it the next day. Try using bands. If its sprinting you want to do then analyse it. Lots of short sprints around 30m. Join an athletics club. Believe in yourself and do it. Goodluck.
I have often wondered, if the goal is to go forward as quick as possible, why do a lot of sprinters have a side to side step in the drive phase, akin to someone starting out on skates.
I've been wondering that too, but I'm pretty sure it is better to keep going forward. But I bet a couple side steps for a better push in the drive wont effect the race that much
is it for balance? pushing out from the blocks with a very thin centre of gravity would be like trying to drive a motorbike as fast as you can from a dead start, whilst standing up. it would wobble a bit and your drive/power would be impacted. if you did the same thing but with a wider, say a 4-wheeled vehicle, the weight is more evenly distributed to either side and you're more stable.
It's because our feet are not in line with our center of gravity. They are on the sides so you need to push sideways in the drive phase to align properly. It's all instincts though, you would instinctively do it if you run fast.
A lot of it is mental too. I always struggle with confidence when I go to track meets. I see all the faster runners warming up and I see they're way better than me. A lot of the women even run faster than me and I'm an adult man. My PR for 100 meters is 13.22. I had bad block starts, was really weak, and never really worked on developing power though. I suppose I just lacked confidence because I knew I wasn't prepared properly to be competitive at sprinting. Getting the body to move with maximum effort is another mental thing. There's a mind muscle/ nervous system connection that you have to have to get your body to go at max speed/effort. I wonder how much the mind can control physical processes within the body. A lot of things in your body just happen without you controlling them. Imagine if somebody was able to power up their nervous system just by focusing on it. Imagine how fast someone could run if they were able to use 100% of themselves.
I’m fast but I’m also not competitive anymore, it’s been 3 years off of track and I feel good but I am lot slower 12.69, I clocked in at I’m 16, for my age that is still in competitive range, but I don’t run on my toes… should I sprint on my toes or not? I need to know because my regional track meet is in nearly a week.
yo. about a year ago i beat my middle school record by 1 seconds in the 100m, by 4 seconds in the 200m, and went to states for 100m, 200m and high jump. going into freshman year i want to break 12 in a meet, and consistently. i didn’t train at all for middle school, just showed up to practice and the meets and ran. i was the only gay boy on the team, and was the only one on the soccer team as well. none of my upperclassman believe in me, and even my own teammates don’t like me because i’m gay. break the stereotypical norms. wish you all luck for the upcoming fall spot season!
