Larry Jon Wilson, getting it right way before it was cool to do country funk..! Sounds a bit like polk salad annie, taken from the dvd Heartworn Highways
This man was a very good friend of mine! I met him via my grandfather in the late 1990s. Larry John I have your autograph, I have your blessings but, it will never fill the void! God bless you brother and I love you to this day.
If I remember correctly, I read that Mr. Wilson was rudely woken up after a night of partying to film this portion for the movie. He did this hungover.
Jine 21, 2010...a huge loss to the world of music. We lost Larry Jon. Condolences to his family and friends, thank goodness for the few precious gems of albums he left those of us fortunate to be acquainted with his gift and talent.
This is why I love Spotify. Townes Van Zandt fan, then discover Heartworn Highways then I decide to play the whole soundtrack. This song, Elijah’s Church and Bluebird wine are so good!
@@TheGorillafoot it gives us younger folk a chance to be introduced to new music, and if we like it then we buy that specific record. So it's not all in vain
You are so right. Hate to say it, but at 58 years of age I had never heard Drive By Truckers or James McMurtry or even John Hiatt. I was stuck in a '70s classic rock bubble. Don't get me wrong ... still love the music I grew up with, but I thought I would never hear anything that turned me on again for the rest of my life. I was wrong.
Very few could keep up with his playing style, only other one I've seen do it is his son. Bertran Tyler Wilson. Love watching both them play. Fixing to head to his sons house today
I was thinking the exact same thing. This version is amazing so not really feeling the album version so much. Sounds to over produced and the backup singers makes is sound kinda dated. Like it belongs in a Garfield cartoon. It's not terrible, just doesn't have the vibe that makes this so good.
THE SOUND ENGINEERING ON THIS VIDEO IS A TRUE MASTERPIECE. MAN THAT SOUNDS GOOOOOOD....AND I'M FROM NEW YORK CITY AND I THINK THIS IS JUST PURE GOLD. BETWEEN THE LARRY JON WILSON'S GUITAR PLAYING AND THE BOYS THIS WELL MIXED SOUND IN STEREO NOT LIKE TODAYS COMPRESSED MUSIC IT'S PURE MAGIC. I WROTE THIS ENTIRE COMMENT IN CAPITAL LETTERS SO THAT EVERYONE CAN SEE HOW IMPRESSED I AM WITH THIS VIDEO. SORRY FOR THE VERBAL LOUDNESS ASPECT OF THIS COMMENT. SINCERELY, RON BURGUNDY (NEWS ANCHOR)
He is so genuinely tickled about the harmonica playing. I love this dude so much. Love the drums. So tight. All of the musicians are, but the drums are just so tight.
Thanks for this. I found it about 7 years ago and keep coming back. I saw the movie (Heartworn Highways) many years ago and this track and session stuck out.
I just finished reading an interview with Szalapski (Heartworn Highways director). He said he'd discovered this song on a LJW album and wanted Larry Jon to demonstrate how a song was recorded. They found a couple of friends and local session players to record this, so this is more of a reworking of a previously released song.
This guy was great, I was really sad when I found him a few years ago and learned he had already passed.... I would have loved to have known him and played some music with him...
Hey guys, that is at Creative Workshop in Nashville, TN. The first studio in the famous Berry Hill area of town that now is home to places like Blackbird Studios. Creative hasn't changed one bit since that recording in 1976 (except sadly no more green carpet... hardwoods now.
Thanks for posting this AMAZING footage ! they don't cut tracks like this anymore, so cool and professional playing proper session heads in an analog studio.......grooving
Tonights Internet Information Vortex: Austin City Limits/Steve Earle > Research on Townes Van Zandt > The Documentary Heartworn Highways > This Song... My god, what an awesome, awesome song and what a fantastic artist... Consider me a newly minted fan. Diggin' the hell out of this era in country music, hope to discover more guys like LJW. The stuff Nashville puts out today is shit compared to this.
Yep....in late June'08 on 1965 records (a UK label)...& apparently he'll do some UK gigs as well. I know that he's doing some festival at Merton Farm, Near Canterbury, Kent, UK sometime this summer....and there is a track from the new album on the internet: "Whore Trilogy", that some DJ got somehow in January!!??....You'll have to search for it, cos I forgot the link but it's great!!!
This is epic. He has oo much soul and presence. His voice kinda reminds me of Mr Lou Rawls. I wish I had a voice like that. I like this version better than the album.
idk how this fella escaped me for so long. This documentary reminded me of another I saw; can't remember the name of it or the name of the guy is was about for that matter. Hoping someone could tell me. He was an Oklahoma man, wore a top hat, long dark hair turning silver. Played bluesy rock n roll. It's a vague memory I know.
@LandonInFlorida dont feel to bad hoss,i been trying to figure it out for about 4 years, the way he clawhooks with his right hand is just impossible,i come close but i can never get it just right.also R.I.P Larry jon.georgia lost a great son and the world lost a great musician.

I am sorry for your loss, sir. It hurts enough for those of us that never met the man.
Just stumbled on his music. Good stuff.
"Oh, Hell yeah." If that isn't engraved on Larry Jon's headstone, it sure as hell should be.
If I remember correctly, I read that Mr. Wilson was rudely woken up after a night of partying to film this portion for the movie. He did this hungover.
Great song and cool to be a fly on the wall while it's getting arranged !
This guy is a f#%€in legend. Smokin heaters in the studio and just winging that shit.
Still listening in Canoochee Georgia
I love this groove. Truly a legend here and a great group of players!
This is music, this whole thing is masterful.

I love this video. His facial expressions are priceless. Truly a person who's fully stoked on what their doing and the end result is brilliant.
Yes !
Everyone there seems to be on the same page . This film pulls you right in there with them .
Startin to feel like I was there 😀
Heartworn Highways: is where country Music SHOULD ALWAYS BE!
R.I.P Larry Jon,thanks for the great music,he NEVER compromised himself or his music.
this man is an amazing musician who was unfortunately overlooked I've been listening to his music since the age of about 4
And an even more amazing writer
Me too. Amazing voice and music. I appreciated it more as I got older, but loved it as a little kid.
Wish they would've kept this version on the album. "It's not a lick song, it's a groove song"
Yes and that explained it all.the man put on a clinic👍👊~Duane Colbert~
Very few could keep up with his playing style, only other one I've seen do it is his son. Bertran Tyler Wilson.

I agree exactly.great sound and the man knows his stuff and what he wants and how to explain it.iam impressed too.dudes a musician~Duane Colbert~
That’s the very first Sphere console, or so I’ve been told.
So incredible.
Musicians in other locales can make and produce classic cuts!
AMAZING!
This is just insane.
So great.
His style with the tap and hook strum is sick.
I'm lovin' the descending lead licks too.
TRUE MASTERPIECE what a ridiculous amount of talented art !!
he's so pleased with the harmonica, good shit.
Larry died on Monday and I feel priviledged to have seen him play a couple of times. Legend.
He is so genuinely tickled about the harmonica playing. I love this dude so much. Love the drums. So tight. All of the musicians are, but the drums are just so tight.
Again, who would 'thumbs DOWN' this?
Prolly someone from Salt Lake City ;)
RIP Larry, you are missed.
The guitarist playing electric..... lol
I wish the released version was like this.
great song
Man he was feeling that harmonica
And his country ass threw in some Lightnin' Hopkins. Hell yea.
I remember 1985 Larry John in my living room in Nashville...cherish the memories!
Larry Jon passed same month my best friend that played FB Randy Robertson. Maybe someone remembers RIP
Thanks for this. I found it about 7 years ago and keep coming back. I saw the movie (Heartworn Highways) many years ago and this track and session stuck out.
A lot of great things have happened in this country. We should celebrate that.
Damn this guy kmows his shit.that was good~Duane Colbert~
Thanks Brent Cobb for letting me know about this long forgotten and under appreciated artist.
Nurse Ratched holding it down behind the mixer
This is awesome Larry Jon is seriously dusty
This blows me away every time I hear it. i hope to somehow get lucky enough to find his lps on monument w/o paying a small fortune.
I found a mint copy once , sold it on ebay then saw heartworn highways and was like “i made a mistake” true story
This was great in heartworn highways.
Now I know who Larry Jon Wilson is my life is complete. .......deadly
greetings from IRELAND 😉 salamat for this gem
This is so funky I love it. They should have used this mix instead of the final album mix which was watered down and they may have had a hit.
Exactly, sadly they over produced it and added all that background singer harmony. Great song though and such a great voice.

love watching the process..
Larry's reaction at 6:38 says it all.
Larry looks a bit older than 35, haha! Great, great video!
What is crazy is he looks like he is in his late 40's or early 50's. He is only 35 in this video.
35??? no effin way?!?!?!?
@@teropikkarainen1724 Truth tho.

does anyone know the chords he's playing?
