Fat Loss & Performance Benefits of Raw Spirulina (food not powder) - Thomas DeLauer…I want you to forget everything that you have ever heard about spirulina. I want you to forget everything that you know. See, most of what you have heard about spirulina talks about it in a supplement form. Now that's all fine and dandy, okay? It's not bad in its supplement form, you still get the chlorophyll side of things, you still get the detoxification process, but what I want to talk about today is spirulina in its raw food form. I'm talking literally like eating algae. I mean, not literally going to the pond and scraping algae off and eating it, but essentially eating spirulina in its raw state, where it can elicit some pretty darn powerful effects.
Now you're probably thinking it's going to taste absolutely terrible but when you hear me out and I reference some of those studies that show you exactly how much fat loss can occur and how much in the way of performance increase you can expect, you're going to absolutely be blown away.
The study that I want to reference was published in the Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise. It took a look at the effects of spirulina supplementation in exercise in nine moderately trained males. So these are people that have done a little bit of exercise but they're not super athletes.
These subjects were recreational runners that had trained for at least a year and they trained for at least a couple times per week, usually 45 minutes per session. Now each of these subjects received either spirulina or a placebo for about four weeks, and each subject ended up running on a treadmill for an intensity that was about 70 to 75% of their VO2 max and they did this for about two hours and then again 95% of their VO2 max all the way to exhaustion.
Now what they ultimately found was absolutely crazy. Researchers ended up finding that the time to fatigue after the two hour run was significantly longer after spirulina supplementation, 68 minutes versus 79 minutes in the spirulina group. Now what's even more impressive was that ingestion of spirulina also ended up decreasing carb oxidation by 10.3% and increased fat oxidation by 10.9% during the two hour run. What that means is that the body used less carbs and burned more fat by a significant degree just by having this algae in the mix.
Now furthermore something that is known as thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances, yes, I know it's a mouthful, but we'll refer to it as T-bars, those levels increased after exercise after the placebo group but not the spirulina group. Now to give you some context, T-bars are byproducts of what's called lipid peroxidation. So spirulina supplementation ended up weakening the exercise-induced increase in lipid peroxidation. I know I sound crazy but all that really means is that spirulina was able to clean up the efficiency of fat utilization, making it a lot easier for the body to use fat and a little bit more difficult for the body to use carbs.
Now these increases in performance that we talked about can happen for a multitude of reasons, but the main one is the fact that raw algae form spirulina contains something known as phycocyanins. See what these phycocyanins do is exactly what we talked about in that study. They help the body utilize more fat and a little bit less carbs. They help the body preserve more in the way of carbohydrates and use more in the way of fats.

it seems from reading the paper that they used dry spirulina. Although i cant be sure because they did not explicitly specify(at least i could not find it). however they did reference the contents of dry spirulina on more than one occasion which leads me to believe that is what they used.

Hey Thomas, I hope you could read my message here. Could you please help me to clarify about the claims on cytotoxin found in blue-algae (including spirulina) please? I was just about to start taking spirulina in its freshest, raw-form like yours (but I grew my own using gallon water, in a safe water tank exposed to indirect sunlight, because it does not ship to my country) but reading all those claims that it could damage the liver really got me worried. What worse is that some of the claims also say it could cause ALS, Parkinson, etc. Would you please help us that still wonder about this? Thank you very much man. Much appreciated.

It depends on the studies you find, I guess. I just googled this question and from the American National Library of Medicine, a study from 2019 shows that it does improve b12 status in rats.
      doi: 10.1111/jfbc.13038
The study doi: 10.1016/j.jfbc.2022.104464 says that algae-based nutrition such as spirulina contains a "pseudo" b12 and an active one but a much higher quantity of "pseudo" b12. Relative 1.5-2 times more.
There is a paper from 1991 doi: 10.1093/ajcn/53.3.695 this study did look at the combination of nori and spirulina and does say that children with b-12 deficiency did show to absorb b-12 but their MCV further deteriorated and recommended further studies and questioned the b-12 bioavailability in these algae
Simple, it's unclear if spirulina is a problem for vitamin b-12, if it can cause b-12 deficiency but the recommendation from Webmd is that if you have b-12 deficiency, you should look elsewhere.
From the study Spirulina in Clinical Practice: Evidence-Based Human Applications it's considered to a safe food.
Conclusion if you have b-12 deficiency. Maybe don't take it. I don't know to be honest. Hopefully this was helpful

*Thomas can you please analyze yesterday's 'The Truth About Carbs' documentary that aired on the BBC last night in the UK?*
*They didn't acknowledge insulin resistance or the amount of people for whom freezing then reheating resistant starch makes no difference from a weight management perspective (I'd been freezing then reheating breads, potatoes etc for over a decade and only cutting them out of my diet entirely has helped) and the study on spitting out carbohydrate drinks that trick your body into anticipating them was interesting.*

Rach Kate You can eat all the carbs you want but keep your fat intake low, about 10%. Carbs and sugar is not dangerous nor will it make you gain weight AS LONG as you do NOT mix it with fat. Fat is causing diabetes and not sugar. ALSO you are probably gaining weight because you eat too many calories than what you burn. So don’t cook your food with oil! No oil EVER. End of story.

    • @lykke4996
      @lykke4996 6 років тому +1

Sugar doesn't cause an insulin response either BUT sugar and fat COMBINED does! The fat you eat, let's say when you have carbs cooked with OIL or BUTTER blocks the insulin from circulating around in the body and then gives you diabetes! But sugar alone IS NOT DANGEROUS and will NEVER give you diabetes or weight gain ever! It's just pure bullshit! FRIED stuff will kill you but never a lemon juice with added sugar... Total BS from the government to get the diabetes industry going. Trust me.

Thomas DeLauer - Super interesting! At MINUTE 5:58, the visual states that heat spraying kills off phycocyanins and linoleic acids. Linoleic acid is the starting point of the ω-6 family [18:2; ω-6). This isn't something particularly desirable. Verbally, you say "linolenic acid", which is desirable and is the starting point of the ω-3 family. [α-linolenic acid; omega-3] Could you clairify which one is correct. I'm in if the answer is α-linolenic acid.

You can have it raw in powder form...?😶🤔 Many powder forms aren’t raw yes but let’s give more facts if we are going to mention this so as to not confusing ppl, so as to come off biased. Raw form is also “sun-dried” isn’t oxidized and maintains raw complex. Also if it’s below 115 degrees it’s still maintaining nutrients. The studies you mentioned are based on studies and performance, which makes sense given your background but does the company have records and certificates on the product and testing? And where is it sourced? This is important to know and sincerely asking. 1

I’m not a health or medical person at all and I get it. I’ve been taking the pills and running 7 miles when I couldn’t do a lap before. I think this is harder for medical pros because they are against it and in favor of pharma.

Thomas. If I'm fasting, and working out in a morning fasted state, can I take Spirulina before the work out, or will that break my fast?

Thank you for this great information. How and when would I consume raw spirulina? Can I put it in the water that I drink during a workout? I’m very interested. Going to check out their website right now.

Raw Living Spirulina is amazing right off the spoon just like almond butter. It is creamy gourmet almost no taste. It is best mixed into fresh coconut water.

I've been a (dried) spirulina consumer for years-- and it's gross. But this fresh spirulina has really changed the game for me. I really don't even know it's there beside the color in my lunch smoothy. but- i feel fantastic. Maybe the VitaminB or maybe just the nutrient load. I really feel great. Take that for whatever it's worth!

Fresh Raw Living Spirulina is a whole food. Not an isolated synthetic nutrient like most supplements. You can literally live on it. 1-2 ounces per day will provide your body with the vital micronutrients you need for the day.
