    Was fortunate to work on a shoot using an Alexa mini a couple of weeks ago - what an image that ALEV sensor produces - it's got a universal wowness that has nothing to do with perceptual camera knowledge - even clients notice it when looking at the monitor.

    What do you think of the dynamic range and "noise" when you film underexposed areas and subjects etc. Do you think that the camera gives your more flexibility to shoot natural then a more expensive camera with lighting etc.

    • @renaissancedigital5730
      @renaissancedigital5730  2 роки тому +2

      It has about 6 stops of dynamic range in the highlights, still the best on the market. When it comes to shadow areas it's a bit subjective depending on how much noise you are comfortable with. It retains color accuracy very well even when under exposed which is one of the big benefits of the sensor.
      In short I would say it's a fantastic camera to use for no lighting style shooting. The more and more lights you incorporate the more and more the difference between cameras begins to diminish.
      Hopefully that gives some insight.

      It's been hard to match shooting in 10 bit but if you shoot RAW and use the color space transformation in Resolve it should match well. I've gotten the Sigma FP to match pretty easily. The color coming off the Panasonic may not be as workable though. Hopefully I can test it one of these days.

      Just a monitor. The Pix-e5 can record HD 444 out but not RAW unfortunately. It can be a good option if you don't want to buy the somewhat expensive SXS cards.
      To me RAW is kind of a pain to deal with on the Alexa so I'd rather just shoot 444. I do have SXS cards though as I am not a big fan of external recorders, just another point of possible failure.

    Any chance the side-by-side shots at 1:43 are mislabeled? When the medium shot was first shown at 1:36, I was certain it was the C70, especially since it came directly following the mention of the C70 in the narration. It has what I perceive as that smooth motion I associate - to varying degrees - with virtually every camera system out there aside from Alexa, where even 24fps looks smoother than you would expect. Like a less intense version of the motion interpolation on a TV. "Less separation between each frame" is a phrase that comes to mind. And then the closeup at 1:40 has not only that more pronounced motion cadence, where you can really see that separation from frame to frame, less perceived "blending" of the motion, but it also has that green-leaning tint that I expect from the Alexa as well. So imagine my shock at 1:43 when the image I thought was Alexa was C70 and vice versa, leaving me scratching my head as to how I could have liked the Canon image more. I'm here because I told myself when my Ursa Mini Pro eventually died (which it did this past weekend, after almost 5 years of use and one false alarm with the main board in 2020) I would finally get an old Alexa. But damn it if that shot at 1:40 doesn't have more of the motion cadence I'm after, and if that's really the C70 then I guess I may have to consider it. Unless....were you shooting 30fps? There were some other shots I saw that definitely looked like 30fps, so perhaps the Alexa was shooting 30 in this example? That might clear it up for me. And if all of the b-roll starting at 5:00 was shot on Alexa, then that would swing me back in favor of the Arri because that stuff looked great and exactly what I expect from Alexa, color and motion cadence-wise.

    • @renaissancedigital5730
      @renaissancedigital5730  2 роки тому +1

      The shots are labeled correctly. All the b-roll starting at 5:00 is from the Alexa. I did do some slight work on the Canon to match it more to the ARRI. That could have been a mistake on my part for this video as I guess it gives an inaccurate baseline for the comparison. I need to do a much more precise test to demonstrate the differences between the two cameras. That will be coming in the next month at least.
      I almost always shoot with a -3 green on the Alexa to compensate for the tint. That might be why you are not seeing it there as much. I have been really impressed with the C70 though it does sometimes feel like a toy next to the ARRI. I'd say coming from the URSA I think you'll like the Classic, as long as you can deal with the extra weight.

    • @nickmichael8333
      @nickmichael8333 2 роки тому +1

      @@renaissancedigital5730 Thanks for the clarification. Great stuff. Definitely makes me reconsider the C70, which was never even really on my list of considerations prior to this, but the Alexa is still the dream cam of course. And I came from the OG big Ursa prior to the UMP so I feel like weight wouldn't be as big an issue as it would for some folks out there.

  • @chasethomas6241
    @chasethomas6241 2 роки тому +5

    Curious to hear your thoughts on client perception. Can you command a higher rate because you show up with an “Arri” or just a big camera? Totally get that you like using Arri personally, but does it make sense as an investment since a lot of the stuff I saw in the footage would be indistinguishable from Canon R footage.

    • @renaissancedigital5730
      @renaissancedigital5730  2 роки тому +6

      The Alexa definitely has a signature look but yes to your average client not so much. I am often able to charge an additional camera package fee. It's looking like the camera will have paid for itself in a couple months.
      I'm hesitant to give advice on renting or rates as I think it's specific to where you live and who you know. People are more likely to rent from someone they already know or are at least aware of.
      Part of the reason for the purchase was client perception and reputation for sure.

      After using the Classic on 8 features this year as the A cam I can comfortably say the Alexa image just gives you something other cameras aren't giving. When you put a camera through its paces you really get to see it in every kind of situation and what its actually capable or not capable of.
      That said I definitely would not recommend the Classic to most people. I have a friend who owns a GH5 and wants to upgrade. There really is no need for it though. The GH5 can tell an award winning story in the right hands.
      The C70 and FX6 are probably the best options on the market in terms of overall image and usability in the field.
