Season 7 Episode 1 "Closer Eye"
Casey deals with the fallout of Dawson's trip to Puerto Rico for relief help. Meanwhile, Firehouse 51 welcomes a new paramedic, Emily Foster to the team, replacing Dawson on Ambulance 61. Boden clashes with new Assistant Deputy Commissioner Gorsch-an obvious sycophant to the new Commissioner, Grissom-when he tries to clean up the Firehouse's reputation. Later, Casey is surprised when he returns home to find Dawson there to say goodbye.

I know the mother made the wrong decision, but none of us really have the right to judge. When you are in that situation, it is easy to become overcome with panic and adrenaline, both of which can cause you to stop thinking rationally. She was told not to take the elevators, but the only thing on her mind was to get to the ground floor as fast as possible. Panic makes people do irrational things, we don't think properly, and we can make terrible choices.

@@brandeeddcom I don’t think you really read the comment. In a situation like this where you are panicking so much most people loose common sense. Your body naturally goes into fight/flight mode and it’s just “get away from this as fast as possible”. You forget basic things you know. This is how this like stampedes and crushes happen from people running away from disasters.

Yea elevators can malfunction and never use them in a fire or fire drill. Back when I lived in a big apartment building we had one elevator that would malfunction constantly and it would stop at random either at floors or in between and then either reset and go back to lobby or continue on to the next floor. I got stuck in that elevator for close to 5 minutes before it started to move again. I tried to avoid using that elevator if I could.

I can't even explain how bad I felt for Otis right there when the elevator opened, more so than for the mother and child. Now don't get me wrong; their fates is absolutely horrific and I would not wish that on my worst enemy, the pain and fear must have been beyond imagine....but their ordeal is at least over. Otis isn't. He would have had that image burned into his mind for the rest of his days and knowing him, he probably felt guilty too even though he did nothing wrong and absolutely everything he could. That in my opinion is worse because the anguish never ends.

    For anyone that's confused
In a panic she would have tried getting to the ground floor faster by using the elevator, (Never Do This In a Fire) not realising the one she used was he one acting up and by pressing the button to go down the faulty electrics sent it up instead, opening it onto the fire floor which when the doors open, would've been the equivalent of torching someone with a flame thrower.
The elevator would have jammed on that floor and the doors most likely stayed open too because of the electrical issue, you can see from what's left that she knew the huge mistake she'd made and used her last seconds to comfort and try to protect the baby. 😞
Poor Otis was the last one to see them alive and the first to find them after.
i feed sorry of the fire fighters in real life that sadly have to bear witness to situation like this.

There is a reason why you never use the lifts in a fire.
They will trap you when the power fails or they could open on the wrong floor due to malfunction and kill you by exposing you to smoke and toxic gases.
Also, lift shafts also act as a chimney spreading heat and smoke throughout the building.

Is it just me or the fact you cannot use the lift during a fire was hammered into my head since I was a kid? My primary school didn't even have lifts and we kept being told whenever there was a fire drill to *always* use the stairs. It is also the reason why even as adult, I automatically uses the stairs whenever there's a fire drill even when I used to work on the 20th floor. Not to mention that it is simply not an option where I am from because lifts are disabled immediately the moment fire alarms are triggered. They can only be moved if there's a clear sign someone is in there and it always goes down in emergency protocol. I vaguely remember the support staff in the building I worked in once got chewed during a fire drill because they didn't disabled the lift and force it to come to the bottom floor.
Maybe it's just me, but it is pretty stupid to hope people react "normally" when they deal with a fire which is why those in charge should've had options to force stop the lift and close it all at the bottom floor the moment the fire alarm starts. Or at least a built-in trigger to disabled the lift and ensure the come to the bottom floor.
