- Only one man would use crocodiles as stepping stones… it’s Bond’s escape from Kananga’s farm from LIVE AND LET DIE. Filmed at Ross Kananga’s Swamp Safari in Jamaica, it was Kananga himself who performed the stunt across the predators’ backs. “One of them turned around whipped his head around and actually bit the heel of his shoe,” recalled Roger Moore. “If it had been me it would have been my whole leg.”

The stuntman's real name was Ross Heilman. He changed his last name to Kananga when he moved to Jamaica. The Bond crew liked his name so much they named the villain in this movie Kananga. It was his stage name.

This is actually one of the best escapes in the Bond movies. Not only because it doesn't rely on flash trickery or gadgetry, but because they actually set that up to cater to the audiences' expectations - then cockily throw it away as being too easy.
Simple, direct, inspired writing.
But in order for that scene to work the baddies have to leave him unobserved and assume that everything will go according to their plan. A classic Bond plot-hole.

Daniel Craig's movies are too dark and over-psychologizing, with the exception of the superb adaption of "Casino Royale".
I miss the humour, the real-life stunts, people not talking to each other in an overly serious, whispering tone - and plots that are not "personal".
@@lukasnummer1 I agree. Casino Royale was fantastic, however, the later films were absolute rubbish. The plot of Skyfall and Spectre were among the silliest in the series. Blofeld orchestrating everything in CR, QoS, Skyfall and Spectre just because "boo hoo, my daddy took more care of you than me..." And Craig isn't suave enough to be Bond either, he's too rough around the edges.
Roger Moore said on commentary that he greatly disliked being that close to the reptiles despite the fact they had all been fed before shooting. He imagined a few of them had ideas about getting a second meal with one of his legs.

@@jout738 No, they are VERY tough creatures that don't feel intense pain the way we do as well as just very sturdy built. Humans are very weak for our size and kicking one isn't going to do much, not to mention they save their energy for fast sprints when very close and there are and multiple of them.
Still my favourite ever Bond stunt. The outtakes only reinforce what an astonishing scene this is.
I still put the spiral bridge jump in "Man With The Golden Gun" a bit above it, though I wish they didn't go with the dumb slide-whistle sound effect.
For spectacle I think the Spy Who Loved me intro, ski jump parachute takes some beating! But this was indeed a memorable stunt too, the real deal! First take only I wonder??
@@okankyoto Yes I'm reminded now you say that, I saw a documentary once with footage of one of the takes whereby the stuntman very nearly does get his foot bitten right at the end of the stunt. Fun fact: The Villan Kananga was named especially after the stuntman whose real name it was.
The stuntman actually fell in the water and after the crocs got him received about 100 stitches for this trouble.

You can feel the tension in this scene. But when he escapes and that Victory music plays it's very satisfying

Yes and no. Roger Moore in Live and Let Die was fantastic. A wee bit long in the tooth for field work but we let that slip. My beef was that he looked also weedy a.f. An out of shape, middle aged men who did not seem to possess athletic tendencies to start with. When he knocks out - with one punch nonetheless - that Joe Frazier looking black goon it felt like a stretch.

I really hope with Daniel’s successor the producers decide to make the Bond films fun again. 2015’s ‘Kingsman: The Secret Service’ proved that a Roger Moore Bond film still works in the 21st century so there’s no excuse

Once saw a squirrel on a floating island on a pond get back to shore by leaping across three ducks' backs. No one ever believes me and think I'm just referencing this scene...

The great thing about Roger Moore as Bond is that he paused for a moment after crossing the crocodile pontoon bridge so we could see he hadn't wrinkled his jacket or trousers in the process.
I always thought that was unnecessary. They should have shown him at least fall and get up. Would have added to the scene

As I understand it, the actual alligator farm used in this was owned by a fellow called Ross Kananga--coincidentally, the villain's last name. The stunt with Bond stepping on the crocs, those were real crocs, and Kananga did the stunt himself. Note how during that shot, you only see his legs and feet.

It was no coincidence the the villain was named Kananga. They named him as a tribute to Ross.
Probably the most crazy stunt in the motion picture history. If you search the behind the screne clips you will see the stuntman Ross Kananga falling in the water with the animals in one jump and on another attempt he gets a nasty injury due to he got bitten in the foot. Surreal to see how he jumps in the water and on top of the crocodiles.
Fun fact: The Stuntman who did the Alligator walk was named Kananga.

@@neeshwar He OWNED the alligators. That is, he owned the alligator farm that the production used for the alligator scenes.
Because he was fearless around the beasts, he was the one they requested to do the stunt. They tied down the alligators but it still tookk 5 tries to get it right.
In appriciation, they named the villian after him.

This scene was filmed in Jamaica,but it was set in Louisiana.When Bond escapes to the boat,look in the background you see mountains! then it switches back to swamps of Louisiana.In 1972 we watched parts of the boat chase,an the airport chase,being filmed in New Orleans.

This is by far the most awe inspiring scenes that ever Bond thru the ages has ever had to deal with . No CGI just a man and the crocodiles . Brosnan might have undertook the scene , but Craig would have refused .

For the stunt, he had their feet tied down first, which is why you only see their heads & tail move. The farm itself was in Jamaica, not Florida although in the movie, it was supposed to be in Louisiana.

One of the best Bond scenes.
The late, great Julius Harris here as Tee-Hee. He later popped up in a later episode of "The Incredible Hulk" ("The Slam") A very likeable actor and by accounts a lovely man in real life. He sadly passed away in 2004.
Those were real crocodiles he stepped on. Never underestimate the stunt team in Bond films.

Moore's Bond had a whimsical, gentlemanly and fundamentally _English_ charm that I'd argue none of the other Bonds - great though they are - ever truly captured. Though I do also like Dalton's more restrained and subtle intensity, which Moore never really successfully conveyed.

Dalton's Bond was a tortured and mentally tired guy who hated his job. Craig copied some of that dark feeling.

Visited the same spot when I was in Jamaica 3 years ago. You can see the out take in a small screening room - the stunt double tried this 7 times before the final perfect jump. He died several years ago (no, not eaten by the Crocs!). Wondering the Crocs in this scene are still alive 😩

This was real. The gators are trained and the stuntman who did the running on top of the gators is the trainer/owner of this resort.
Favourite scene and Bond film as a youngster. Still up there now.

In the days when they had to do it for real, no CGI crap. A guy actually ran across the backs of crocs. It makes you so more invested in the movie.
