    Tube drivers hate fenders. It just doesn't work. They need mid to do what they really do. Hiwatt or Marshall is great for tube driver.

      I think the Real Tube overdrive is better suited for Fenders as it has a mids control. You still get the Tube Driver thing plus more.

      Rules with tweed Fenders. I tried it into a blackface Twin too and I loved it. Just had to dial the lo and hi controls back further than normal.

    I have a tube driver and a tube screamer. Tube driver for lead tones, treble down, mids up. Tube screamer for pushing high gain rhythm, distortion down, gain up.

    Why is the Tube Driver so much larger than the other two?

    • @LawrencePetross
      @LawrencePetross  4 роки тому

      That is a question best answered by Mr BK Butler, but I'll give it a go. On this version the power transformer is inside the case, plus you need room for the tube and circuit board. That uses up most of the inside space. So at least part of the size choice was fit. I am sure there is some marketing in there as well, but who actual knows other than Mr Butler.

    For me it's a tie between the tube driver and the LPD mod and in single notes, I don't mind any of them. Oddly I didn't like the tube screamer like I thought I would. I think the tube driver is just weird and cool which is why I'd like one. I know behringer makes something similar but it's not quite as cool as the original. I'm impressed with your mods to the boss. Maybe I'll be buying a pedal from you in the near future.

    What did you modify on the sd1?

    • @LawrencePetross
      @LawrencePetross  7 років тому +1

      It's got the usual treatment of removing the electrolytic caps from the signal path, then I added a parallel clean signal path, a dual gain pot (one side control the clean level in anti-rotation with the other side controlling gain, changed the clipping circuit to symmetrical, and added a mixing stage for the clean and over driven signals. IIRC that totals it, but it was a while back so I may be missing some thing.
      If you listen at ua-cam.com/video/-LieE9JKqxo/v-deo.html you can hear the clean by itself. A normal SD-1 will not do this. This mod allows you to use it as a clean boost as well, because the new circuit adds level boosting capabilities separate from the gain circuit. This mod was an experiment when I was developing the circuit for my Kyojin OD. You can see a brief demo of that here ua-cam.com/video/d5oXG9jMOus/v-deo.html
      Thanks for asking!

      Matt Gilbert you can send it to me to have it done. It's too extensive a mod for diy for most folks. It requires a completely separate daughter board for the clean channel.

    Btw the AX7 (or is it an AU7?) in the BK Tube Driver does not do the clipping. The distortion is done by diodes or triodes; the tube merely *colours* the tone.
    A lot of people do not understand this. They think it is like a mini tube preamp. As far as i know, it isn't.

    • @LawrencePetross
      @LawrencePetross  6 років тому +7

      Hello Matt, thanks for the comment. Your statement is factually inaccurate in a few ways, you are correct however in that the Tube Driver is not a tube preamp.
      First there are no diodes in the signal path of the BK Tube Driver. Have a look at any of the verified schematics online (www.freeinfosociety.com/electronics/schemview.php?id=1128) and you'll find that all the clipping up until the drive pot is at ~10 o'clock comes from the two halves of the 12AX7 preamp tube. Beyond that it is the drive control opamp that does the clipping first and then the tube.
      What you're describing is what the dirty channels of the Marshall JMP1 preamp does. Diodes for clipping, tube for color and rounding the corners of the waveform.
      Getting back to the schematic, the two diodes at the input are transient spike protection and are biased so that only signal above the Vfbias threshold is shunted. This is to protect the opamp input from ESD spikes that would otherwise kill it. The first opamp is a buffer so as to not load the guitar pickups. The second is the drive control and has about 500x gain at max, giving it the ability to clip and really slam the tubes with signal. The tube runs in a starved plate mode since the plate voltage potential is only about 30 volts. This makes the tube clip very easily and has a very unique character. Giving it lots of harmonic overtones and compression. From there into the FMV tone stack and then the output. Overall a cool design for the day. Thanks!

      Well I was going on what I'd been told. Clearly, I was misinformed Sorry I didn't understand most of what you said and I can't read schematics.
      Do you know anything about the Maxon TB-O9? I have one. It has a little tube in it. Is that somewhat like a BK or is a completely different approach?

    • @mattgilbert7347

      I was told that the Kingley Jester really is like a tube preamp. Is that right?

    • @Diax1324
      @Diax1324 5 років тому +1

      @@mattgilbert7347 Yes it is. Furthermore, The Tube driver really isn't getting drive from the tube, but the fets driving it. MXR Fet driver sounds 99% identical, and feels 99% identical.

    • @mattgilbert7347
      @mattgilbert7347 5 років тому

      @@Diax1324 So, what I said in my initial comment was not completely inaccurate. The Tube isn't doing the drive work, it's the fets doing the work pushing the tube - right? That would imply that the kind of tube used does affect the "colour" of the overall tone. I may not know anything about electronics but I can follow a logic path, and that seems logical. I don't see any reason to replace my MI Effects Crossover (amazing fet based overdrive) with a BK. The EQ seems to be the most powerful element in this pedal, but I can use my EQ pedal pre or post gain, and get similar results, if not technically, similar in terms of what is heard and felt by the player.
      The guy responded with a "data dump" that didn't really help me understand anything, seemed to be a case of overwhelming with information. I can do that, in my field (which is not electronics) but have always found it kind of useless - and it comes off as somewhat self-aggrandising. I mean, WTF is an FMV tone stack? Is that an active EQ like Baxandall?
      Your comment was straightforward, to the point, and helpful. Thank you for answering my question about the Kingsley and informing me about the MXR.
